Comments of Happy’s Chinese Restaurant
R. Y.
My husband had been to HAPPY’S when he was sent to Canberra for work so when we moved there in 2013 he wanted to show us this great little restaurant that he’d found. We lived within walking distance so it was really handy. Well the food is amazing with some of the meals being things that my Chinese mother in law would make at home! We went to HAPPY’S once a week for the entire 5 years that we lived in the city. With covid19 over the last 2 years, we’ve only been back a few times the last being on Friday night. The food is still every bit as good as always and the service has never been anything but friendly and helpful. HAPPY’S is definitely my favourite restaurant.
P. S.
One of the best Chinese restaurants in Canberra. Must try fillet steak, soooooo good!
G.
Authentic Cantonese Cuisine.
Used to come every 1 or 2 week back when I lived here. Services are very friendly. Always very Happy with Happy's.
There aren't many restaurants that have been open for 60 years.
L. M.
Arrived late for dinner. Team were very accommodating. Fast old school Chinese fair like I remember from my childhood. Well done gang, and thanks. Awesome grub.
M. A.
Just had lunch here after many years: my family used to get prawn cutlets and fried rice here in the mid-sixties (my mother was obsessed with prawns) as takeaway - and this was an era when being able to get ANYTHING takeaway in Canberra was almost impossible. Came once or twice as an adult in the eighties and then a thirty-something year gap.
*Nothing* has changed except the dragons that used to be painted on the pillars - even the prawn cutlets are still there and if anything, better than 1967! Food was so good that I asked to take away the leftover fried rice (the serve was too big for my 22-year old and me to eat). Then I was stupid enough to leave the container behind!
Marvellous place; will be back often. Start of a revival for me and my family :-)

Celebrated Chinese New Year at Happy's! It's our first time to dine and the experience was worth it! Quick service and the food was great! Good choice to have the fried chicken in lemon sauce, seafood combination fried rice noodles (which is really big and filled with seafood meat) and the beef with ginger and shallots. Indeed, a Happy Chinese New Year for us!
C. P.
Very impressed with this little underground chinese restaurant, food was good and with large portions sizes we had to get take a takeaway container for our leftovers ..
R. B.
An ok Chinese restaurant with plenty of the standard dishes to order. Very fast service. Cheap wine. Friendly but efficient service. A go to destination if you want a fast relatively cheap meal. I will no doubt visit again.
J.
Always a wonderful place to eat and share memories with friends. Food is always delicious. Go extra hungry to eat lots.
G. B.
Long standing Chinese restaurant in Canberra. Great serving sizes, the banquets are fantastic value. Staff are brilliant and very attentive. Good variety of drinks. Only downside I can find is the quality of the food, particularly the desserts as the deep fried ice cream (something I’m a bit of a connoisseur of) wasn’t up to scratch as the ice cream was too melted. The mains and entrees were as per standard Chinese cuisine, good but nothing extraordinary.
A. K.
Food was alright, but nothing special! Flavours were mild.
Fried ice cream was cold.
Service was quick.
Staff was good!
J. J.
Delicious Chinese with quick and friendly service and very generous serving sizes. We'll be back!

Hate to leave a 2 star review especially for small local businesses. Second time having food from Happy’s. First time I got takeaways and it was delish, sweet and sour pork and chinese water spinach! can tell its a family run business, a young girl took my order over the phone and gave me my order when I arrived. But this time, I dined in for lunch, ordered a combination wonton noodle and the whole thing was super bland. While it looks...generous everything was pretty tasteless. I had to ask for chilli sauce (paid extra). Gai lan was woody and the temperature was barely hot. The wonton fillings were very floury and the dough was thick and tough and barely warm inside. For $17 I was just a bit disappointed but will give the place another go cause my dinner experience was great.
I. F.
Food was absolutely amazing. Flavours were awesome. So fresh. Fantastic menu. Great service. Very clean and great value for money. I can not recommend Happys enough. If I lived in Canberra it would definitely be my choice for Chinese/Cantonese food
O. L.
It's been a long time (thanks Covid!) since we've been to Happy's for a meal. It's gotten even better in our absence.
Service is the same high quality friendly service.
The interior has been updated/freshened up. There's even a new menu.
The food was awesome, I'm used to a high standard from here anyway, but they surpassed themselves with this meal. We had a range of entrees and mains and there was no complaints from anyone, in fact, there were lots of comments about how tasty and tender the meals were.
10/10 will be eating here again.
R. A.
Wonderful little restaurant, very friendly and helpful staff, the food is absolutely delicious, the serving sizes are excellent for the prices are very reasonable too, nice old school decor inside, a good selection of drinks available and the menu choices are very varied so much to choose from and all of it is excellent
K. C. D. (.
Great restaurant for small groups. Large portions and decent pricing if you share with others.
The restaurant is a bit crowded with tables and chairs, not a lot of space.
There is a wide variety of dishes. Delicious and flavourful, but a bit too salty and spicy.
D. T.
A very nice, hidden away restaurant in the basement. Enjoyed the fried boneless chicken in lemon sauce. The chicken was very crispy despite the sauce.
B. S.
As the restaurant’s name, I am so happy with their food. Canberra is well known busy at night and hard to find a place to eat without booking. This place is great. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended. The food is delicious and generously. Will be back there again.
G. M.
This restaurant is in the basement like a time vault of 1962 Australian/Chinese Restaurants.
Still family owned and operated.
It's decour and menus are worth the visit.
Great selection of 🐄 beef, 🐔chicken, 🐖 pork and seafood 🎏.
Food is very good.
I would recommend it as a place to eat.
It's almost a living Museum experience.
S. K.
Nice place, great staff super fast and friendly Service, good food... we'll be back!
R. A.
I love a good unpretentious Chinese restaurant and upon visiting Canberra we found one at Happy’s. We only had a couple of dishes but they were really delicious. Do yourself a favour and seek out Happy’s. Negotiating the stairs down revealed an intimate dining experience, friendly, helpful staff and a very tempting, delicious menu. I can appreciate why some other diners wish to keep Happy’s their secret.
J. P.
Great food and friendly service. I particularly liked the Wasabi Beef.
B. D.
I flew in from Brisbane and went out of my way to go to happy's! They are even better then I remember!
C. D.
Happy's has THE best traditional Chinese Cantonese food I have ever eaten (and being Asian I am fussy). Tender, best quality meats and delicious seafood. We came through twice on our way to Sydney and on our way back home to Melbourne and still had so many things we weren't able to try on the menu!
If we lived in Canberra, we'd be on a first name basis for sure. Definitely recommend.
R. M.
We had 12 people for a banquet. What a feast!! Even struggling through covid the portions were generous,
and the food delicious. They didn't skimp. Prices are very reasonable. Not overpriced in any way. Highly recommended.
G. M.
Great fast food company, friendly service and nice chinese.
T. T.
An old style restaurant but the food is nice and the service is good
L. P.
Once again, a fantastic experience. Great service, extra great food, and really reasonable pricing. I always use fried rice as my 'barometer' for a great Asian restaurant. Happy' excelled to the max. Thanks Gav and team.
B. D.
Love Happy’s. Been coming for a few years and the standard is always high. Friendly, efficient staff, well cooked Chinese classics always delivered to a high standard. Highly recommend the Spicy eggplant hot pot it’s something special. Good for any occasion and will always recommend to friends and family passing through Canberra
L. M.
Ordered a Happys Pack via UberEATS and it was excellent value. Got four dishes, drinks and entrees. Arrived hot and was very tasty. Will order again if visiting the ACT.
S. M.
My parents went to Happy's in the 70s when they were dating, and Mr Happy was still with us. We took them for their 45th wedding anniversary, and the food is just as good. There is a reason Happy's is still around after 45 years.
Get the lemon duck!
J. D.
One of the best Chinese food restaurants I've ever been to. Delicious, reasonably priced food, friendly staff and all around great atmosphere. No doubt in my mind will visit again.
R. T.
Amazing service with a great menu. A really casual old school Chinese restaurant. Thoroughly recommended!
D. L.
We went there without a booking with a Table of four they fitted us in, food came out super quick and was the best Chinese food we have eaten
H. N.
Thank you for the prawn chips!
Everything was delicious too.
T. M.
Been going there for over 40 years and have not had a bad experience. Seafood combination, Abalone and the sizzling dishes are especially good. It's a Canberra institution that deserves the praise it gets! Good old fashioned family run service and quality.
J. D.
Always great food and fast service. Been eating there for 25 years always had a fantastic feed. Gavin does a great job.
A. L. D. C.
Am a regular customer at Happy's. We enjoy the ambience, the fast service and food that is consistently good. We bring our interstate visitors along to enjoy the Chef Specials. Highly recommended.
T. M.
This old school Chinese restaurant has been in business for a long time. When locals highly recommend it, you know you've made a good find.
B. A.
Ordered the Happy’s vegetarian spring roles which were very good. Mains were Mongolian Lamb and Satay Combination (beef and chicken). Very nice - large servings which our family of four only just finished. The decor is very basic and it’s down a basement but overall service was good, food was good and prices reasonable. Licensed as well. What an amazing Chinese restaurant. Authentic food, so tasty, good serves, and not pricey. Loved the ambiance. Service was excellent and restaurant was clean and tidy. A real little gem!
S. M.
We love it every time! The food is delicious and they are always prepared for gf options ☺️.
The staff is very friendly, helpful and professional!
We highly recommend it.
N. K.
We have been coming here for many many years and without a doubt this is our favourite restaurant in town. The food is always excellent and Gavin and the staff are always so polite and welcoming. We tend to order the same dishes every time as our family all have our own favorites and it is always delicious.
I. L.
I hadn't been to Happy's since moving away from Canberra, and tonight was the first time eating there in five years. The restaurant and staff were just as lovely as I remembered them to be, and the food was just as delicious, with the same filling portion sizes I've always loved. It was so nice to have dinner here again, and the food was wonderful!
M. F.
Super delicious, well priced, very good customer service. My new go-to Chinese restaurant
G. D.
I ordered a lunch special "chicken in lemon sauce" but they gave me chicken in sauce so sweet that if was more a sugar syrup than anything. Even sweeter than honey chicken I'd assume.
K. K.
Amazing food, super fast and very friendly.
M. C.
We recently visited Canberra and made a reservation here. We had to cancel because one of our party was sick, but we went to Happy's and picked up some takeaway instead. The food was great, the prices were reasonable, and the staff and service were fantastic. Loved the setting and the decor, and regretted that we were unable to eat in. Thanks to the owner for accommodating our last minute change of plan. Highly recommended.
A. W.
A Canberra institution. Good old fashioned Chinese food before we all know what real mainland Chinese cuisine is. Unapologetically kitsch (think prawn crackers and sweet and sour pork) but delicious too. We always go back here each time we are in Canberra. It's not fine dining but it's dining fine as.
L. M.
Just enjoyed a beautiful meal and great attentive service.
A. B.
Super friendly staff - the best fried rice in Canberra, it's the only restaurant I will buy it from and have been doing so since 1974. Also best prawn toast, in fact all of their food is great.
K. S.
Best place to get chinese in Civic.
Happys has been serving delicious chinese food all my life. We go here for a lot of special occasions.
I always look forward to returning again.
My fave picks are the curry chicken and bbq pork
D. N.
I've been going to Happy's since 1989 and my father first went here the year it opened in 1962. The food, service and atmosphere have made this place one of the most consistently excellent staples of the Canberra food scene.
The honey beef and eggplant hotpot are must try dishes and while not everything on the menu is 'the best ever' version of a dish you have ever had you are unlikely to be disappointed.
Caters for large groups, romantic dinners, birthdays and events.
Three generations of excellence and hopefully many more.
N. W.
Had high hopes after reading the reviews, but came away rather disappointed. Spring rolls and dim sims were quite bland. Salt and Pepper pork was neither of the 2, it had chilli, spring onions and coriander - I feel it would have been rather tasty as the pork was very tender except the lack of salt and pepper.
A. G.
An email institution with a well deserved reputation for fine food and friendliness
J. A.
Had a really enjoyable lunch with a large group here. The service was friendly and fast, the dishes were all round very delicious. Spring rolls are a must have! Quite tucked away but all in all would recommend as a great lunch and dinner option at a good price.
A. J.
Had a great meal here at reasonable prices. I was here in 1974 and the same family runs this restaurant. The grandson now owns and operates this restaurant. The food is good and reasonably priced. The staff are friendly and efficient. Don't let the outdated decor put you off.
P. M.
A absolute must have is the salt & pepper calamari!
d. f.
This is a old favourite, been operating 50+ years, now by the grandson. Always consistent and a winner. A firm favourite for locals and visitors alike. All the usual Chinese favourites and will accommodate dietary requirements. BYO and also licensed with good selection of well priced drinks.
H. B.
Hidden away gem. Great garlic prawns and prawn toast.
C. P.
Have ordered food from Happy's a few times now. The food and the service was exceptional each time. I will be back!!
S. O.
Had dinner the other night for my birthday and the place was wonderful.
The staff were very friendly and polite.
The food came so fast! and was delicious!
The decor of the restaurant is out of date and looks like they have never upgraded, but i is not bad at all.
Would definitely go again!
K. M.
The meals are awesome, staff are friendly, prices are reasonable and quick service. I go to Happy's about 6 times a month for lunch with friends. We have our staple items but every now and then we get all present to pick something we have never had before as a group - rarely disappointed. Ask Gavin for his pick and variations if he is in when you are there.
Happy's is an institution for those that know. If you don't then your loss.
Q. L.
Hands down, the best Cantonese in Canberra. Their beef fried rice noodle in soya sauce and chicken and mushroom are a must. The owner's lovely too, it's great that they've kept this place open and in the family business for so long. Here's to many more years of Happy's!
J. S.
Food and service are very good. Price is reasonable. You need to go down 2 flight of stairs to reach the restaurant, same stairs to go outside.
V. B.
Have been going to Happy’s since the late 2000s and have never been disappointed. Quality food in a cosy location right in the middle of everything. Service is quick and food is delish!
m. b.
Favorite restaurant for dinner before a show. The meals are always fresh, full of flavour and quick.
K.
Food is great, staff is amazing!
K.
Not bad, decent food and environment
E. S.
It's like a small hidden gem, it's out of the way and it has amazing food. The service was impeccable, I received my meal quickly and the quality of the food was not impacted by the speedy delivery. The menu is also very diverse and has something for everyone. This restaurant is definitely one of my favourites.
T. F.
Oldest Chinese food in Canberra. Been there since the 60's. Food was good, service was quick and friendly, and prices quite reasonable. Was an enjoyable and relaxed meal.
K. S.
Centrally located in downtown Canberra, Happy's Chinese Restaraunt has fantastic food and great service. The menu is extensive, reasonably priced and the staff is friendly and efficient. No wonder Happy's has survived so long as one of the original Chinese restaraunts in town. Do not be put off by the street entrance as it decends down the stairs to a non-descript doorway. Continue through to find a restaurant with traditional decor, great atmosphere and some of the best food around. There is a beer and wine list and of course, traditional jasmine tea. Highly recommended.
J. S.
Food was good, especially the well 0re0ared chicken fried rice, the sizzling Mongolian beef and the szechuan fish fillets...all delicious. The atmosphere was good with the exception of us being the only 2 in the restaurant for an early lunch and the staff very loudly speaking about some personal issues as though we weren't even there or important enough to allow us to enjoy our lunch in peace...it was a major turn off but the food was very good.
W.
The food is standard Chinese fare, pretty authentic but nothing special. The location is not great, pretty cramped but it makes up for it by having relatively cheap meals in Canberra standards. Service is fast, but if you stay too long they might tell you to get moving. There's usually a few Asians eating there, which is generally a good sign for Chinese restaurants.
D. N.
The food was nice when we finally got it, but the waiter had no idea what on the menu was gluten free. We kept asking him to check but he kept getting yelled at by the chef and would keep coming back and telling us cashew chicken. Mate we don't want cashew chicken. So unusual that last time we came here they would modify anything to make it gluten free but this time they couldn't and apparently now every sauce has gluten in it. Maybe they changed the chef. Would eat her again if friends wanted to cause the food was nice. Pitty about the service. And more the piity they they are no longer gluten free friendly.
A. X.
Stir fry noodles. Very generous portion and reasonably priced. Not impressed so much by flavour tho.
K. A.
It's okay for a one off experience. The food was decent and the servings were good. The menu displayed on TV sets helped to an extent, in trying something new. The two things I had an issue with were, the server had a very bad cold and should not have been serving food or drinks and the place felt a bit dingy.
M. M.
Food is always amazing and staff is super friendly.
Tonight I ordered satay chicken, special fried rice and prawn toast. The prawn toast was amazing. Thanks for dinner 😊
T. J.
The Char Kway Teow we had here was hands down the best we've have had in 20 years. The flat noodle was broad, hot and cooked perfectly. The overall flavour of the dish was awesome, each time you ate a seperate mouthful the individual flavours and firmness of those ingredients were still intact. We also had another of our favourites, deep fried sweet and sour fish. Done badly this is a terrible dish, done right and you'll never be able to forget it... this truly was unforgettable! The sauce was broad with flavour with a tang of spice, but not too strong with that 'one note' blast you get from Westernised dime a dozen restaurant Bain Marie's. The batter was light and crispy while the fish itself was hot, tender and tasted fresh.
g. c.
Wow. Happy's was beyond our expectations . They upgraded our table at short notice on a busy Friday night . The food was fabulous . The location , hidden in a basement was different . The staff are happy and courteous . Great place. Can't wait to go back . Pork ribs yummo.
J. C.
Amazing service! Skyler's a friendly, funny guy who completely made our day. Food's well prepared and presented along with great atmosphere.
Some of the best Chinese in Canberra.
J. C.
Great friendly professional fast service. Delicious food, high quality, decent serving size. Local old time favourite! Highly recommended!!
M. G. (.
A long-time Happy's customer, been going for 30+ years. Great Cantonese food, plain and simple. Old fashioned decor, friendly quick service.
C. M.
Vibrant eatery with delicious cuisine, family restaurant since 1963, have to walk down stairs, bookings preferred but we got a table for 2 with no problem for a Saturday night.
N. L.
As always, Gavin and the team did a splendid job, meal was perfect as always and the renovations make it a delight to visit. Highly recommend.
L.
Best Chinese in Canberra in my opinion, and it's not just because of the food. The staff are friendly and very attentive. All round great place to eat.
V. L.
Happy’s always has the most delicious food, great service and extra special attention for the kids....5 stars without a doubt 😊
A. W.
Good range of specialty dishes makes this place a gem. Very reasonably priced and popular with locals. We'll definitely be back!
S. K.
I sure will be back for another round.
3 mains 1 large rice and 2 beers $66
Best Chinese in town.
The staff are great, food was unreal and very fresh loved it unlike other chinese restaurants I ate every last bit 😋😋
M. C.
Been going here regularly for years, consistently the best chinese restaurant I've been to. Prawn toast is superb, satay chicken, mongolian beef, chilli beef are all excellent. Service is also good, although the dishes are brought out a bit fast sometimes on busy nights. Brilliant place.
Y. F.
Returned to Happy's over the weekend, the food is still outstanding, service is still fantastic :)
I love the Banana Chicken
S. W.
Best Chinese restaurant in the city, huge menu to choose from and everything is delicious. I bring work colleagues, friends and family here all the time. Highly recommended.

Excellent Food.
Wonderful staff.
Will definitely be back.
J. E.
Great food, excellent service, clear communication regarding booking during covid-19 restrictions and very accommodating towards children. Schewan chicken is really, really good!
E. C.
Great food. Lively and noisy when I ate here, but in a good way. Suggest takeaway if you prefer it quiet.
M. S.
Lovely Chinese food. Very accommodating staff and I love that it's downstairs, it gives you a bit of an exclusive feeling to the place. It is always packed with customers, goes to show that their food is gooooood.
A. N.
Me and my family always go there, and the food is delicious! It's a small place where you have to go down stairs, but their great! Would recommend.
B.
The food was nice, it's a Canberra local. The staff were nice. I wouldn't rush back straight away but I'll keep it in mind for another time.
B. M.
The owner and his staff are always warm and welcoming and the food is excellent as always,, don't bother going anywhere else, Happy's is the best Chinese restaurant in Canberra!!
G. c.
Food was nice good size dishes but very small restaurant and crowded.
L. V.
Food is good. Service is good. Consistent. I always enjoy eating at Happys.
D. N.
Family has been coming here since the year after it opened.. still as perfect as ever and into the third generation to run it all.. full of flavour and fast service!
T. M.
Good food, was suprised by the size haha, looks smaller from the entrance. Wonderful food though, best Chinese I've had in a while.
T.
Good food, and friendly staff. At the time the restaurant was quite busy but our food came out fast and some great prices for the area.
T. R.
Brand new interior with the same great food. Since starting to eat here 2007 I've yet to receive a bad meal.
D. D.
Best meal I've had all week, particularly liked the big chunks of duck breast and the spring rolls which were very yummy 🙂
M. C.
Old Canberra charm with amazing food. Honest rather than fancy or cutting edge, but very well executed and fantastically tasty, especially for the price.
A. S.
I love there food and variety. They are not the best at one dish but they are good in the steady quality of good food they offer so overall they are pretty good.
T. C.
Don't let the reasonable prices fool you. This food is utterly delicious. I have to go back to try more things from this extensive menu.
B. k. J. D.
I eat here all the time, this place is fantastic food, extensive menu and fresh as always. Outstanding service every time....

Best Chinese food in Canberra!
Always greeted with a smile and great food.
Definite go-to for takeaway.
G. B.
Great cheap and cheerful Chinese food. The down in a basement location is a bit off putting but it's actually kind of cozy down there. Usually pretty busy.
I. T.
Amazing food, friendly atmosphere, took jez & I to convince better halves to go!, Flower drum beware!
M. H.

(Translated) Maybe I won't point, my fried beef noodle is salty for me. However, the weight of the dish is very large, and it is necessary to pack it when it is not enough. It is also impressive that the atmosphere of the restaurant is very good, in an underground location, not only feels decent but also cultural and classical. It is a good place for foreign friends to enjoy Cantonese cuisine. If you have a chance next time, you will try something else.

(Translated) Canberra has a long history of Chinese restaurant. It was the first time I visited when I was studying in Canberra more than 20 years ago. It was warmly received by Uncle Happy that year, and he has become a regular customer since the beginning. I returned to Canberra after more than 20 years. Although the restaurant has changed a lot and Uncle Happy is not there, the food still retains the traditional Chinese taste, so Happy's is really worth a try.
