I have been regular recently and brought my friends and colleagues to recommend their food. However, today’s visit was a bit disappointing. Their sashimi was awesome as always, BUT sushi and roll were absolutely below the average which made me embrrassed to my friends. The rice of roll and sushi was hard and not balanced with sushi in my mouth. Anyway, their customer service is always good and respectful.

Delicious traditional Japanese food, we took advantage of a special bento box deal and it was well worth it to add an extra plate of sashimi on the meal, so much food and left feeling very full and satisfied!
J. N.
Really delicious Bento boxes and sashimi. Took advantage of the Facebook special and was so full after. Keen to come back and try more of the menu.

Food was excellent. Service was horrible, we had a booking for 6:45, we were rushed since we sat down. We were asked 3 times within 5 minutes if we were done with the starters and wanted to get on the mains, and we said not yet (i still had half my plate full). I hadn't even finished my starter, that someone came out with my main.
We had the last table on the venue, right in front of the kitchen, so could hear the chef (I assume owner) yelling to his staff for the whole hour.
I understand that business is slow due to covid, but you shouldn't take bookings after 6:30 if you want them out before 8pm. We went in for a good experience, and left full but feeling like we hadn't had time to enjoy the different courses, nor properly finish our drinks.

Not glamorous, but such a reminder of Japan it was a delight.
The food is delicious and service is friendly.

Just had my birthday dinner here and was made to feel very special. The food was exactly what you expect from a quality Japanese restaurant. The chef is super friendly. The staff really know their product and make you feel very welcome. Really recommend it....

We went during the promotion month as it was their 20 years anniversary! From $79 per person to $49 per person for sukiyaki wagyu premium beef hotpot course, we thought it’s a great deal. Overall, we were quite satisfied with the quality of the food and their customer service. 👍🏻 Will revisit in future!
R. C.
Highly recommend. Had 3 birthday's combined into 1. Ninja banquet was amazing. Got 2 bottles of sake and one sushi and sashimi on the house. Lovely service! They even offer a discount if you pay with cash
L. H.
Loved it here! Great quality food and service at a reasonable price. Relaxed dining experience, not over the top but with great selection of sake including coconut, matcha which was pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed. Had the pescetarian banquet ($47 each per 2 people) which filled us up and had great variation. Sushi, sashimi, tempura seafood and vegetables with 5 types of dipping salt. Nasu dengaku, seaweed salad, agadashi tofu, Miso soup and rice.
J. W.
Excellent dining experience and great service. We had a banquet with a variety of sashimi, sushi, tempura and teriyaki chicken which are good quality and reasonable price. Stomach is full and heart is happy 😊

Finally had Sukiyaki here, it was busy with multiple birthday girls and boys celebrated we enjoyed friendly efficient service and the sweetest Japanese hotpot!
I suspect with further visits I'll be awarding 5⭐s
Pls add japanese lychee cider to the otherwise plentiful drinks menu!

We recently made the most of the Wagyu Premium Beef Makunouchi Bento special offer on Facebook. Everything so tasty and fresh and there was so much food. Check out their Facebook page for specials!

A hidden gem in the city. Always a great dining experience. The staff here are patient and takes time to explain the menu if needed. It is recommended to make reservations for dinner specially for weekends.
Update May 2020: the takeaway Bento boxes were Awesome! Was easy to order over the phone and collect the order from the back entrance (Verity Lane).
Update November 2021:Good to know that somethings remain unchanged. Bento boxes are always a delight.Easy to order via text and pay over the phone. Collection is easy from the Verity lane service entrance where food is brought to the car.

Amazing authentic Japanese! Great ambiance, friendly helpful staff, amazing food. They are very kind and generous people and I can't recommend this restaurant enough!
S. M.
I was blown away with their banquet menu and ability to substitute food for things you prefer. Their kitchen staff are Japanese but I found no one else spoke 日本語。 Regardless it was amazing. I highly recommend their seared sashimi anniversary special. Parking was difficult and expensive so go after work if that’s an option :)

There simply aren't enough stars to rate the Iori as highly as it deserves. Every visit is a cultural and culinary adventure, crowned with artistry & hospitality. I took two friends frim Scotland and they rated the repast as world class. Clearly, many others chose the Iori to have a memorable night, as we all sang happy birthday to three celebrants!! The food is a work of art, almost sacrilege to eat. But only "almost"!

Food is great ➕ Great service. Love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
We will definitely come back for another one!.

Great food, and will certainly be returning in the future for more. One of the finest Japanese restaurants in Canberra. Yours truly @fooderarri
M. T.
Love the food! Taste very authentic, reminds me of the food I ate in Japan. 5 star service where they gave complimentary sushi for my daughter. The sirloin beef melted in my mouth. The chirasi rice was very delicious and well balanced. Sashimi was fresh.
S. Y.
Food is delicious and staff are friendly. Very easy to order takeaway and extremely safe to pick up food from them during these times. The california roll that was included in the sukiyaki hot pot set was really tasty! Would love to come back and dine in person one day.
T. T.
Love it! Nice environment nice layout great food and waitresses are just the friendliest thta I've ever met. Greeted with surprise complementary food.
Edited: came back to this restaurant after a year and it's still the best Japanese food in Canberra. Love the ambient and services.
A. H.
I loved Iori so much when I was living in Canberra! Miss the homey atmosphere, amazing service & friendly staff, and ofc fantastically delicious food!
S. Z.
We preordered the discounted dinner from the Facebook. The sashimi and sushi in this set tastes really good and the discount is very attractive. It was my first time to have the takoyaki in the soup. I will come again and try other sets.
T. S.
Authentic Japanese style dinner with privacy - Beautifully decorated with Japanese waitress and waiters. One of the best Japanese restaurant - Perfectly displayed food and savory sashimi, meat and vegetables - Authentic Japanese Rice and tea. Staffs are so friendly and realised it's our anniversary - who offered us a special delicacy. It was so delicious! Staff was very attentive and thoughtful. No complain at all! Definitely re-revisit in the future! Thanks very much Iori❤
C.
The best Japanese Restaurant in Canberra!
This is what you’ll get from their Ninja Banquet- min. 2 persons ($47/person)
The warm sake and desserts are excluded :)
A. C.
Took the family meal for takeaway during the COVID-19 blues and the food was amazing. They managed to get containers that would make each of the meal components separate and pretty.
Food was delicious and I especially liked the tofu dishes and teriyaki meats. So good. We had the family set.
Worth even as takeaway if you can't get the booking. Pick up is done straight at the back of their premises so you don't need to park in the city.
A.
I can’t think of a flaw! Quick food service, personable staff experience and most of all outstanding food. Iori is always a go to favourite of mine. The staff always make my dining experience relaxing and fun. Thank you for a memorable birthday dinner!!
C. F. A.
Authentic!!! Everything you want in a Japanese meal!
We love the Tempura at Iroi and the lunch specials!
We have been long-time fans of IORI - be sure to check out our videos!

Definitely one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Canberra. Authentic cuisine, lovely atmosphere and friendly staffs. Lunch set special is very good value for money. They are around 18-20 dollars and you can get a variety of food. My favourite is chirashi zen lunch set: It has a chirashi zen (rice cover with various types of sashimi), a little bowl of ramen, a small plate of teriyaki chicken, poke katsu, tempura veggies and pickles.
L. P.
My friend and I had dinner there and the food was amazing. We both have a Lil Chicken set each and were very happy with our choice. The Nigori tasting sake set was also very good. The service we received from the staff was also excellent. Feel like we were in a restaurant in Japan!!
B. C.
Fantastic Japanese restaurant hiding in town. Quality of their sashimi is noticeable, simply excellent. Dishes are well-presented, and the restaurant gives a very cozy vibe to boot.
A. C.
Iori provides a traditional bento with beautifully prepared dishes that I have lunched at on many occasions. The Miyabi lunch box was enjoyable especially the nigiri sushi and tempura. the complimentary entree was a pleasant surprise and the desserts were beautifully presented. The service was very prompt and staff were smiling all the time which makes eating a meal so much more enjoyable.
C. L.
Amazing value for money at lunch time. One of the best places to eat in general in the Canberra region and definitely the best Japanese restaurant in Canberra. The owner is a very friendly man and a great chef.
On your birthday you can request him to sing happy birthday and it's quite the experience.
10/10 would go again.
L. C.
A great restaurant, highly recommend
S. P.
Always love going to Iori, the food is satisfying and tasty. The service is wonderful and sincere. The garlic wagu is fast becoming a favourite.
J. W.
That was absolutely lovely. Five stars mean the service was immaculate. As the food. The sashimi plate was prepped, and kept chilled and a little too cold for my taste, but I cannot hold that against them.
Very nice indeed.
Photo: Bento with beef (additional choice of chicken and salmon). And the sashimi "starter".
C. T.
The food is really average, especially the rice, disappointed me, it's not chewy, rather mushy. But I still enjoyed the meal as if I was in Japan. The overall experience is recommendable. With the Japanese interior design and waitresses.
E. A.
Awesome restaurant, great atmosphere. Ordered the Ninja banquet and rolled our way back to the hotel
L. L.
l had a wonderful and unforgettable night at this place!Food was amazing and staff were so friendly and sweet! Thanks guys!❤️
S. N.
Best authentic Japanese restaurant in Canberra. Amazing and authentic Japanese food. The sushi, sashimi and tempura are world class. I have never left this place disappointed. Wish they did more yakitori
D. T.
The bento box dinner with sashimi was superb. Very authentic and the sashimi was very fresh and silky smooth.
S. M.
Great experience and delicious food. Really authentic and felt like we were in Japan. The staff were really friendly and gave great service. The chef even came out a couple of times to sing happy birthday to patrons which was lovely. Would definetly recommend it.
K. H.
Always great food and service. An actual Japanese restaurant run by Japanese people!!!
Love coming here. Spot on every time!
D. L.
The food here was delicious. It's also a rather quiet restaurant, so it's easy to hear and be heard by other diners you attend with.
K. Y.
Rather costly but aptly so.... but the best quality of Japanese food you can get. Just look at the photo. I only wish that the lightings are brighter for dinner services.
S. X.
One of the best jp dinning in Canberr. Find reasonablely priced much and delicate b dinner choices here.
J. L.
It was an amazing experience, the food was exquisite. The restaurant itself was small, but this added to the charm and intimacy. Staff were helpful, friendly and very polite. A wonderful way to spend an evening.
b. b.
Never fails to please. We travel from Victoria every year for our anniversary to eat here and spend a weekend in Canberra. Have been coming here since Iori opened. Everything is delicious and beautifully presented. Can never fault it, the chef is our favourite, such an expert in the art of Japanese cuisine. WE LOVE THIS PLACE.
J. S.
Wonderful atmosphere, excellent service, incredibly food. This is the most authentic Japanese restaurant I have ever tried in Australia. I felt like I was back in Kyoto! Cannot recommend highly enough, definitely worth the visit.
S. M.
We had the Ninja banquet, it was delicious and abundant. Will return! One of the few restaurants that truly caters for celiacs. One person on our table was celiac, and they brought an entire banquet of gluten-free dishes done just for her, no fuss.
B. S.
Glad we booked as this place was packed when we visited. This was a top notch dinner. The Wagyu sukiyaki set menu was more than enough food and very tasty. Plus the folks working there looked after us excellently. Will return!
R. S.
Excellent service a little cramped but very nice meals.
J. S.
Excellent food and service, did feel a bit rushed but still very happy.
A. Z.
The food was great and waitress who surved me was very cute
G. B.
Absolutely amazing. Food great! Staff incredible! Will be back for sure
M. C.
Lovely people, nice decor, only let down was the beef tataki...
K. C.
Very nice decoration and atmosphere! Fairly pricey but good quality food. Convenient location.
Y. S.
The staff at Aori are very traditional and very kind. Its good to see a Japanese place be gunned by Japanese people. I really enjoyed the food and experience and would definitely be going back. The sashimi was a little smaller than I would like but we are not in Japan so I guess I can't complain.
S.
Went to Iori for the first time for my partner's birthday and it exceeded my expectations. The food was amazing and the service was perfect! The restaurant was kind to even provide special treats for the birthday celebrations. Highly recommend and I definitely will be going back! 10/10
M. T.
Had an excellent dinner out here! We were served by Josh, who was very attentive, down to earth and made our evening so much the better! Thanks Josh! Food is always great but tonight's dining experience was above and beyond our expectations
G. V.
Very good quality Japanese food in Canberra. The sashimi was very fresh and the Agedashi tofu reminded me of some I had in Japan. Intimate setting with traditional seating and sushi bar area. Would recommend if you are craving some authentic Japanese food.
A. D.
Beautiful and very tasty food. The menu is amazing with lots of choices to come back and try. The Chef made special surprise dishes for us and everyone helped celebrate our daughters 16th birthday. Very lovely relaxed atmosphere. Best value in Canberra. We will be back to try more on the menu.
J. Z.
Nice Japanese food and lovely waitress :) They even teach you how to use chopsticks on the menu.
A. L.
Lovely dinner and fantastic service. The food is extremely good. The wait staff are attentive and helpful, and made the birthday dinner extra special. Highly recommend.
J. B.
We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Iori Japanese Restaurant last night. This was our second visit since April and it has lost nothing of its charm. The service is great and the staff are friendly and attentive. Moreover the food is delicious and well presented. As on our last visit, one of us was having a birthday - a fact the head waiter winkled out of us with some subtlety - and after our meal the chef dimmed the lights and led the room in a chorus of Happy Birthday, throwing in a complimentary tiramisu with a candle! We'll be back!
M. D.
Food was pretty good and staff were attentive and quick. The decor is pretty dated. At the end of a pleasant enough meal the experience for me was ruined by being offered a 5% discount for payment by cash, but a requirement for a 2% surcharge for "tap" payment by credit card - so 7% surcharge for credit card payment on an already pricey menu. I won't be returning.
L. M.
My first time in about 15 years.
Service is good given the high number of lunchtime customers - one or two delightful Japanese waitresses add to the experience;
prices appear to be on par with other Japanese restaurants in Canberra;
the menu is adequate, although I noticed a few of my favourite choices were missing, namely: "katsu curry" (pork curry with rice) and "hiya yakko" (cold tofu usually sprinkled with grated bonito, chopped scallions and ginger with Japanese soy sauce).
I will certainly return to explore the menu further. Bookings are essential, even at lunchtime.
J. Y.
Great authentic Japanese cuisine in Canberra. Love the birthday singing from all the staff including the Chef. Great place to celebrate birthday.
E. T.
Highly recommend this place! Everything was amazing - we felt like we were back in Japan. Also it was my partner's birthday and the staff made it a special night - they put a candle in his dessert and got the whole restaurant to sing happy birthday. Will be coming back here again soon!
C. P.
Highly recommend Akiba if your looking for high quality, well priced Japanese cuisine in an excellent setting. Service was excellent. Look up Sophie, she is a rockstar, providing excellent service.
B. W.
Delicious food and great service. The staff even helped us by modifying a set menu to match our dishes so we could save on our bill. Will definitely be coming here again!
A. L.
While searching for somewhere for dinner came across Iori and although quite busy they still found us a table, without any trouble. We chose the banquet for two and were glad we did. We needed gluten free options and this was not a problem. The food was excellent and the service very good. I would recommend this restaurant and will be sure to return when next in Canberra.
W. 1.
Great service and delicious bento boxes! Highly recommended
M. G.
We went to celebrate my fiance's birthday and Chef brought out a beautifully presented tasting dessert plate with a lit candle (after the staff had checked he was able to eat dairy) and Chef asked all the guests in the restaurant to sing 'happy birthday' - really lovely touches. Highly recommended.
s. l.
Best Japanese food in Canberra. Very worth to try it.
H. M.
From the reviews I expected something a bit more upmarket. Advertising on the wall does nothing for dining ambience and is tacky.
The food was great and well proportioned. We loved it.
Staff were solicitous, but I do have a gripe: one person asks what we’d like to order, but can’t then take the order without “the machine”. Either everyone on the floor has one, or dare I suggest, get a pencil & paper. You’ve just lost any efficiencies this machine provided your business and annoyed your customer in the process.
K. C.
The best and most authentic Japanese I could find in Canberra CBD.
S. K.
I have always enjoyed coming here for lunch, consistent and authentic. I had visitors from interstate last week and decided to see what Iori had to offer for dinner. We tried the Ninja Banquet and were not disappointed, one of my friends couldn't stop raving about the garlic stake. I also liked the flavoured saki samples, went nicely with the meal.
K. L.
AMAZING!!!! Best sashimi in Canberra, delicious sushi, mouth-watering teriyaki and fast, attentive service! First time visiting and will definitely be back! Highly recommend getting the Ninja Banquet, there was so much food, we couldn’t finish everything 😍
Thank you Iori for an amazing dinner!
K. L. d. P.
I absolutely loved the service and the food! Thank you Iori!!!
A. Y.
Traditional, expensive but delicious food and lovely staff. The food was served quickly and servings are fairly large.
I. V.
Definitely Canberra's best Japanese restaurant. An absolute gem and treasure, Iori offers a unique dining experience with each visit. The quality of their food has always been consistently high, their service has always been impeccable and the interior and the ambience of the place is just extremely calming. Definitely would recommend as a date spot, for a group outing so just somewhere to go for lunch and dinner if you're looking for top quality Japanese cuisine. Will be visiting again soon :D
K. L.
This place is great, the decor is lovely and the staff wear traditional Japanese clothing. We got the ninja banquet which I'd recommend if you want to try a lot of things! The sashimi and sushi were great, but the standouts were the tofu dish and the garlic Wagyu. All the staff were friendly, the whole process was efficient but not rushed and the price was fair for what we got (but I wouldn't say it's a cheap dinner). Will definitely be back!
L. V.
Not very good
We were really disappointed. The freshness of the food was an issue particularly the scallops and the king fish. Rice in the sushi rolls was “gluggy” and there were capers in a lot of the dishes?! Good recommendation in the Sake is all I can point to positively.
J. N.
Really great food at reasonable prices. They were possibly understaffed that evening and while the food came out reasonably quickly, they did forget to deliver one of the dishes that were ordered. The staff were extremely friendly and professional.
Decor also possibly needs an update. The CRT television mounted on the wall and other embellishments definitely gave the whole restaurant a tired, old feel.
Everything else aside, we will still be returning for the amazing food.
J. L.
My favourite Japanese restaurant in Canberra. So cute, cosy and traditional. Good service and the banquet deals are extremely good value. And they have a great range of sake and Japanese beers available. Highly recommend!
H. O. A. (.
Great food. Great ambiance. And great service too. I would recommend the "A.T.M" from the set menu or you could try any other set menu as they are all pretty good. Although it might be priced higher, this is easily one of the best Japanese restaurant in Canberra.
Do consider making a reservation if it is the weekends though (limited number of tables).
D. S.
Food: Fresh seafood in there, sweet, succulent sashimi pieces if you order them raw, while the cooked ones flake gently and melts in your mouth. Recommended: Lunch: Tasmanian Don - Salmon cooked in every single way possible, inclusive of roe, topped on a huge mountain of rice with soup.
M. P.
Was at Canberra for work and was craving some Japanese food real bad. I stumbled upon this great restaurant. Felt welcomed as soon as I entered. The friendly waiter greeted me with a smile on his face and escorted me to my seat. The food was marvellous and affordable. On my way out the waiter followed me to open the door for me and gave me a farewell. Awesome customer service!👌🏼👌🏼 5/5
B. H.
Amazing Japanese food and very friendly service. Beware the food is on the pricier side but well worth a visit! My personal favorite is the Chicken Lil' which has small portions of various chicken dishes. Also check out the common Japanese food related phrases on the chopstick wrapping paper!
D. S.
Iori was an excellent experience from start to finish. The food was fantastic, with the "ninja" banquet providing a wide variety that will cater to most tastes. A vegetarian version is also on the menu. And don't let the banquet name put you off, ninja just means it's perfect before a show at the Canberra Theatre.
The service was also superb, the wait staff and the chef all obviously enjoy their work, and it comes across in everything they do.
The prices were also reasonable for what you get, a banquet for 3 plus drinks came in under $180. Tip - take cash, as at January 2019 Iori offers a 5% discount for cash (and charge 2% extra for card).
C. N.
I went there for a banquet. Good food, good service and good atmosphere. Really enjoy the evening, especially the smoke King fish sushi.
E. Y.
My partner and I come here quite often - around once a fortnight. I find the price per person is reasonable given their generous portion size. We find ourselves spending around $40-60 per person per visit for food and non-alcoholic drinks, for those that don’t drink alcohol: their tea is amazing. I personally love their grilled eel rice and the sashimi/sushi platter served on a bridge-like plate. However, after going on low carb and keto diets (both my partner and I) we’ve had trouble ordering foods as most contain rice. Overall, both the food and service are amazing.
C. R.
The most authentic Japanese food in Canberra
I have been to Iori several times and never came away feeling unsatisfied.
The staff are always great and very helpful
The food is delicious, well cooked and perfectly presented.
Definitely worth it!
D. S.
Great Japanese food. Definitely more expensive than most places but worthwhile. Come here a few times and they are very consistent. Service is decent, extensive alcohol list, great menu suitable for anyone. Will be back soon
P. S.
Favourite Canberra spot for traditional Japanese cuisine. Service is always great as is the food.
N. G.
Lovely atmosphere, fantastic food and so much of it. The tempura bananas would be great as a regular item. Thank you so much for making them and making the evening a great one for the family. A lovely evening to celebrate three birthdays. 👍The staff are beautiful.
R. S.
Been here a few times and food has been exquisite! One time there was quite a wait for the food, and this is the only restaurant where the waitstaff came up to apologise for the time and to let us know the food was coming soon without/before me chasing them up and asking. Makes you feel like you're not forgotten! Happy with the service. Definitely recommend!
G. G.
Fantastic food, excellent service, great atmosphere and reasonable prices. A unique dining experience!
Z.
The most authentic Japanese restaurant in Canberra. They're friendly and the food is amazing! It's actually quite nice to see they don't exclusivity hire Asian staff, as many of the waiters are Australian uni students.
C. N.
Great Japanese food for Canberra. A little westernized, with sweeter and saltier flavours than what you might expect from an authentic experience. Still pretty decent. Reasonably priced, but not a bargain by any means.
A. M.
No matter how many times I go to Iori every time is wonderful. The food is some of the best Japanese in Canberra, and the service is excellent. Always accommodating with dietary requirements and a dish to suit everyone I'll be there again.
N. Z.
Man. Most food I've ever had. Great sizes. Had the 55 dollar per person banquet. And EVERYTHING was spectacular. Definitely going back a thousand times over. If you like sushi, then this is the place to be!
A. R.
I'd give it five stars even if it didn't have the best vegetarian Japanese food I've ever had. Food is amazing, service is even better - book ahead for the lunchtime bento.
B. W.
What a great night. Fantastic food. Great service and looked after with a surprise birthday bonus for our table. We will be back.
M. B.
The food was delicious. I recommend a reservation, especially at lunch time.
L. L.
Waiting staff are dressed in traditional Japanese outfits, and there is a seating area that lets you sit normally while looking just like a Japanese dining room.
Food is absolutely delicious, beautifully presented... and there is a lot of it in a banquet! A highlight was the sake menu, with varieties you will not have tried, and good advice from the waiters to help to choose the perfect accompaniment to your meal!
B. A.
A bunch of us had dinner last night. This is a well run place. Good staff, efficient service, good food and a great vibe. We shared quite a number of entrees, rather than having individual meals. I recommend the eggplant dish, the braised tofu and the wagyu beef dish. The combination of an assortment of smaller dishes with some steamed rice and miso soup worked really well. The house saki is a little rough.
A. H.
I had a lovely time at Iori. Staff are beyond sweet and friendly, and the food was delicious! Would highly recommend the Ninja banquet! Thank you to the staff for an absolutely lovely birthday dinner 😊
K. S.
Date night with my best and thought we'd go Japanese. Little hole in the wall near the interchange. Lovely greeting and nice Japanese-simple settings. The service was amazing and kind, with a complementary plum wine (and sake later). The choices were broad and a little overwhelming but the hostess gave us perfect advice on a mix of tastes. We tried the 'ninja' banquet. From the edamame taster to the outstanding shishimi and sushi (salmon, kingfish, tuna and smoked eel), tempura and miso soup, garlic Wagyu and teriyaki chicken! Interesting and tasty sauces to accompany. Very cheap banquet with among the best service and presentation I've enjoyed in Canberra. You must eat here! You won't be disappointed! I guarantee it
J. T.
After a few years, I finally managed to find the opportunity to head back here. Lunch with my wife. Been wanting to bring her here since she moved to Canberra 5 years ago. She was impressed with the decor too.
We ordered the Samurai Beef and GoShoku promo. Loved the wide variety of elements in the 2 items, giving us a good taste of their menu. Wagyu beef, teriyaki chicken, and the salmon bowl was very yummy! Tempura and karaage were ok, though they could have been a tad saltier. Nice and crispy though. Salmon sashimi was ok, not mind-blowing. Pork katsu was crispy but dry. Probably a bit worse than Kokoro's pork katsu. Udon noodle soup was tasty but the udon was overcooked - too soggy. Presentation was nice.
Having said that, we still enjoyed our lunch a lot and were so full we couldn't go for desserts. My wife built up a good appetitie from the good-looking food and was glad we came. Just over $30 for 2 of us to leave full and satisfied - great deal! The full house meant they were still popular with locals in the area!
Dinner is a bit dearer and was a bit hard to justify but lunch is definitely worth it!
Having been around Japan, I dare say this is Canberra's best Japanese restaurant. Probably not up there with the best in Sydney and Melbourne but this would be my go-to for a jap fix in CBR.
Still no decent ramen joint around though... :(
K. W.
I am an avid lover of Japanese food, and the utopic taste of the Wagyu and Eel here are easily the epitome of all the Japanese restaurants I have been to. The wagyu beef quite literally melts away in your mouth. Furthermore, the dishes themselves have also been intricately prepared, and you can even take a seat where you watch the chefs prepare the food. This intricacy is highlighted by the tiny specs of pomegranate glittered over the sashimi.
Not only is the food delicious, but the service is also superb. Despite the busyness, they took the time to explain the various delicacies included on the sashimi plate. Oh... and by the way, the chefs also served 4 pieces of complimentary salmon sushi, with a generous sprinkle of orange fish egg/roe on top, and underlined by fried red onion.
Highly recommended! Despite only being in Canberra for 1 more day, I might be going there again !
L. C.
Seriously good Japanese food. Beautiful presentation and great taste.
M. N.
Best Japanese in the ACT. We love Iori, the delicious and beautiful food, friendly service. The ninja banquet is a beautiful demonstration of the chefs' talent. I tried the Kiki sake tasting set tonight and highly recommend it.
W. B.
Absolutely delicious Japanese food, slightly westernized to please everyone, fast service, friendly staff (a little bit unexperienced tho) dressed with traditional yukatas, got 3 complementary dishes from the chef (guess he liked us); we were 4 people, had Tonkatsu, beef and chicken teriyaki, nigiri and california rolls, everything well presented and super tasty....just a little bit pricey for my taste, but definitely a place to visit at least once.
A. S.
Fantastic service and food is great. I highly recommend if you like Japanese food and want a fun experience. Staff are always friendly.
K. A.
The banquet was tasty and is reasonably priced.
Lovely waiting staff as well.
My only feedback is that the courses came out is a little too rapid succession and a bit more attention could have been paid to whether we wanted any more drinks.
Y. S. T. (.
Not the cheapest Japanese restaurant but the food is cooked to an amazing and delicious standard. The ingredients are fresh and the techniques they use to prepare your food really brings out the freshness and flavour.

I was surprised to read a recent review about this fantastic restaurant. I have been coming to Iori for years. The produce is always fresh and there are always exciting specials on the menu.
Recently I went with a friend and we shared the Wagyu Hot Pot set also known as Shabu Shabu. The serving was more than generous and there was no doubt in my mind that the beef was Wagyu. Iori's serves up authentic Japanese cuisine and their Wagyu Beef in the Shabu Shabu is served traditionally thinly sliced.
I hope people are not put off by that review because Iori truly is one of Canberra’s culinary gems and I would hate for people to miss out!
D.
Authentic Japanese. Feels like ur in Japan. Food second to none in Canberra. Service impeccable. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Canberra
D. S.
My partner and I went with the 9 course Omakase menu. For its price I wished I’d done A la cart instead. We found the dishes within the Omakase were very similar to each other, frequently using the same ingredients (ie salmon, tuna sashimi, and that orange mayonnaise). For a Japanese cuisine I found they were using too much sauce over the dishes.
For its price I feel we could’ve gone to a more fancier place or more authentic Japanese cuisine.
W. L.
Delcious, authentic Japanese food, well priced. I've come back here a few times.
My only critique is that on my last visit, the waiter asked if we wanted to order rice despite all meals coming with a side of rice already.
N. P.
Wonderful food and staff. Bit pricey but can't complain about the quality of food. We ordered the ninja banquet for 6 and everyone had plenty of food and the service was brilliant.
B. F.
The food is worth the price. But the best thing about Iori is the friendly service. They try to make one's visit there enjoyable and comfortable.
C. E.
Absolutely wonderful experience 👍 Iori never fails to deliver a delicious meal that tastes as good as it looks..... which is a challenge as the dished are put together with such color and form. Favourites - agadashi tofu, mixed sashimi, teriyaki salmon. Had an amazing dessert for the first time last night red bean cake, green tea tiramisu, poached local peaches with berries - ridiculously good! Topped off with a frizen sake and plum wine cocktail it was a truly lovely meal! Thank you Mamoru, Kaz & staff for your hospitality 😊
S. M.
Iori is reliably great. The food is tasty, well presented and served by friendly staff. I must've been there 20 times for dinner and I've enjoyed every occasion.
K. J.
Delicious and filling.
Friendly staff in traditional garb.
Great location.
Tasty plum wine (!!!).
Our staple Japanese place in Canberra!!!
B. G.
Very nice Japanese experience! The service is good and fast, the food is tasty. The fish was very good and fresh!
C. C.
The food, atmosphere and service was all excellent. Would highly recommend one of their banquets.
J. C.
Great food and atmosphere. We had a gluten free requirement they were super understanding and very helpful
C. H.
An excellent meal, with tasty authentic dishes and attentive service. We were having a birthday party and our hosts made sure the birthday guest was spoilt. The staff went beyond what I expected to make sure we had an enjoyable night. While on the more expensive side, I rate the food and experience as worth it.
A. N.
This was one of the best meals we've had in a long time and great customer service to match. Tasty And Delicious and the flavour of Japan was too much good!!!!!
L. T.

J. L.
Very nice food, the atmosphere is great, the service is excellent. Overall, very professional. Have recommended friends to come here, have visited this place with different friends and will continue to recommend this place to more people, keep up the good work!
G. U.
My judgements are often reserved and my opinions kept at neutral.
Even though it was busy, they did there best to get us seated without a booking.
The lunch specials looks amazing but I decided to order from the regular menu the Wagyu Beef!
LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT HOW AMAZING AND FLAVOURSOME IT WAS. IT FILLED MY PALLET WITH JOY TO KNOW SOMETHING LIKE THIS EXIST!
I RECCOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO TRY THE WAGYU BEEF.
Also check out how traditional it is, come get greeted in Japanese!
F. M.
Food is amazing and the staff are friendly and helpful, a lovely place for dinner whether it's formal or casual.
F. S.
Because of the good quality of sushi, it is very expensive.
H. Z.
A very unique Japanese restaurant in Canberra where you can really enjoy the authentic taste of both traditional and modern Japanese cuisines,. It has been established in Canberra for more than a decade, the services and the taste remains top notch.
N. M.
Fantastic food. Ninja banquet is extremely good value. See if you can get the deep fried banana. Can't recommend this place enough.
A. K.
One of the most, if not the most, authentic Japanese restaurants in Canberra! Truly delicious! (coming from someone who has lived in Japan for a decade)
C. Y.
Very authentic Japanese food! A little bit pricy but I enjoyed the atmosphere ! Best Japanese cuisine I've had in Canberra

Great place. Reminds me of a place I went to in Osaka. Probably the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Canberra.
K. G.
Great food and atmosphere - we had a special occasion and they were absolutely lovely and so accommodating. Will be back.
E. O.
Not sure what planet other reviewers are from, but the prices here are obscene. 32 dollars for teriyaki chicken is extortion and that's on the lower end of the price scale.
W. Y.
I love eating here! The great atmosphere and the mouth watering food never disappoints! My go-to japanese food here in Canberra
s. o.
This is a great restaurant and incredibly popular. So book or prepare to wait a little. However it's worth the wait. Fabulous food and staff and surroundings.

Tasty fast food. The only problem is the long waiting time during the lunch hour.
D. W.
Found this little place in Canberra, the food was incredibly good! Excellent service too, and they answered any question we had about the menu with a smile
S. G.
The food was really tasty, but as a Japanese restaurant they should have some soups options with noodles typical from there. Finally the place, is cozy.
M. C.
Soooo much delicious food! The kingfish sushima was full flavoured and firm. A solid choice in the heart of Canberra!
G. D.
Great Japanese food in a lovely quiet setting. Very friendly staff and just overall a great dining experience!
M. C.
Absolutely wonderful dining experience. Great value and service.
E. W.
Samurai meal has so much food. All were great but the teriyaki chicken was a bit too salty. Great for gathering.
S. M.
Friendly service and delicious food make for a reliably pleasant eating experience. Their new restricted opening hours are a shame, but I guess they have their reasons.
R. B.
The food is delicious but quite pricey for what it is. Albeit, we are from Sydney where there is a multitude of good Japanese restaurants.
M. T.
authentic japanese restaurant. but should avoid to order UDON noodles. I recommend Koshihikari beer. This beer made by rice. It's interesting isn't it !

However the quality of food is not steady. Sometimes it is delicious but sometimes it is too salty.

C. S.
Everything is sooooooooooo good and worth the price. My favourite dishes is the dessert of the day, sashimi and eel. I personally think its the best Jp food in cbr.
N. H.
This restaurant was a little confusing. They charge between $35-70 for most meals under the assumption of fine dining, but the decor was not up to our expectations and the food was pretty average.
Our waitress was fantastic though, she gave us a recommendation to share 2 banquet courses between 4 people and even changed some of the set meals to match our dietary requirements. The Yuzu sparking cocktails were delicious and the beef and chicken were tender.
However, the service of the other waitresses was a little overbearing as they came very close to us (despite COVID-19). They also rushed us out of the restaurant within 2 hours because the restaurant is run in ‘sessions’. We weren’t told this when we booked, so it would have been much better if they were upfront about this.
