Comments of Madam Lu Malaysian Restaurant
S. L.
We ordered from here because of the raving reviews of this place. The food was mediocre at best. Certainly not the best Malaysian food I’ve had in Australia. The menu is vast, but would prefer them to stick to what they cook best rather than offering such a wide selection. Although the food was ready fairly quickly.
For take away, you would also expect them to provide cutlery, or chopsticks, but did not happen. We stayed in a hotel and had to scramble to get utensils just to eat the food. Poor service from that respect…
Needless to say, I wouldn’t recommend this place for take away. Perhaps the dine in experience would be different.

One of my favourite restaurants in Canberra. Everything I've had here has been so delicious, fresh and has a homey feel to it. Great lunch specials for office lunches too - love the veggie chow mein & sambal sauce for lunch. Prawn wonton soup is delicious too. And there's a great fried tofu entree dish. It's a place I will always come back to regularly.

Found this place just recently and love it! Their food is pretty authentic and delicious, with decent sized portions and quick service. Staff/owner were really nice as well, I accidentally made a mess by spilling some water but they cleaned it up promptly and repeatedly assured me that it was fine as I was quite apologetic about it. Will definitely come back!

Good homecooked Malaysian food. My favorite dish is the Mud crab or seafood E-mien. The noodle texture is chewy and tastes of seafood. Another good dish is the prawn paste chicken. Almost everything is good here. They do a buffet once a month for $39/ person.
J. M.
Wow! Everything was so delicious. Spring rolls had succulent meat inside. The pan fried dumplings were crispy outside and a yummy broth with the meat inside. Tofu Goreng sauce with peanuts and cucumber so fresh and the tofu was actually really good (normally I don't like tofu). Beef rendang had a fluffy flaky handmade roti. Beef with ginger and shallots so tender and flavourful, the sauce is thick and gooey, so good. Fried rice, plain rice, and a veggie dish with some kind of spinach? Perfection. Plenty of big tables around so even with a full restaurant it did not feel crowded. The young wait staff work hard and we're friendly. They sometimes seemed overwhelmed, it wasn't necessarily a bad thing, just an observation, but it doesn't take away from my 5 star rating. I will definitely be back to try the Hainanese Chicken Rice, apparently there is a Saturday special for $11!
J. T.
Wow, best Malaysian restaurant I've ever eaten at. Ordered the steamed fish, duck wraps, beef laksa, Haines chicken rice and all were amazing 👌
J. H.
My friend and I come here every couple of weeks because it is hands down the most enjoyable restaurant to eat at. It’s not only because of the fabulous food, but it’s got a lot to do with the vibe! Ming is the kindest host with the most beautiful big personality. I feel bad that I haven’t shared this review sooner because it’s my everyday restaurant of choice in Canberra. I saw a review saying Ming is loud as if it’s a bad thing. That’s the most disappointing and misrepresenting review I’ve ever encountered. If you don’t try Madams, you are missing out on fabulous Malay cuisine and also the most inviting host a restaurant could provide.
P. B.
I had laksa two days in a row and it was deliciously fragrant and flavorful. The portion was generous and the ingredients were all fresh and well prepared. The crispness of the tofu was especially tasty.
Staff were friendly and very attentive even when the room was packed for lunch.
The crockery has an amazing glaze which made all the food look even better and makes the meals the main decoration in the restaurant.
Will be back again soon to try some other dishes that looked amazing coming out of the kitchen.

We four ate at Madam Lu on the 16 October and enjoyed the food and experience very much. Very efficient and prompt service was a feature in addition to the delicious food. The chicken satays, veg spring rolls and curry Puff entrees were followed by a most
delicious whole barramundi in a Singapore chilli sauce. This In addition the redang beef was as good as any I have tasted.
C. F. A.
We loved our dining experience at Madam Lu. We tried their belacan squid, the chicken rice and the satay beef!
We loved every dish we had there - we can’t wait to go back and try the rest of their menu!
T. D.
Sensational food...Beef Randang...The most tender meat ever had in any Asian Restaurant...Top class flavour...It's a great extensive menu.😁👌
C. C.
After I had bak kut teh once at Changi airport, I have been searching where I could have this dish in canberra and I finally found it. It was full of herby flavour and the soup and wonderful aroma. Serving size was appropriate although it could have had a little more content in the soup.
J. T.
Had the char kway teow and its probably the best I've had in Canberra and this is my go-to dish for Malaysian restaurants! Fresh ingredients, generous portions and spot-on flavours. I know where to go for my CKT fix now.
My friends ordered the chicken and combination laksa and were very pleased with their dishes too!
S. F.
Hannah chicken rice is my favourite. Plus I love the home baked cassava cake. Can't wait to visit again.
J. B.
Very delicious laksa and nasi lemak. Great taste and good value. Will come back again
S. C.
So great! Food is usually 1:3. We over ordered. But we enjoyed it a lot.
B. C.
The best Malaysian food in Canberra. The owner previously ran the very good Ming's restaurant in Phillip.
M. A.
Wonderful and tasty food. They served very quickly and were quite friendly. Highly refined
K. O.
One of my favourites! Generous portion and tasty Malaysian Chinese food. Highly recommend!
A. Y.
Quick service and lunch menu was cheap and had some variety of dishes. Casual place - great for relaxed dinner with friends and family. Would go back again to try more dishes.
C. M.
Fabulous!! Ayam Goreng and the Salted Fish, Chicken and Eggplant was delicious. Perfectly complemented with the lovely, friendly service.
M. A. A.
Delicious good, fast service, good prices. This will become my regular for lunches midweek. Keep it up!
L. C.
Love their Malaysian cakes they make on an adhoc basis and best hainanese chicken rice in Canberra!
s. d.
I moved to Canberra from Melbourne about 1.5 years ago and have been ordering take away from this restaurant. So, about time I leave my glowing review. Being Singaporean, I must say this restaurant is truly authentic in its malaysian flavours and their sambal is seriously good! Their food always transport me back to home!! So please try alll of their dishes. It will not disappoint.
A. I.
We loved the food.
E. C.
Delicious food that came out quick by the lovely staff at madame lu. Lots of deliveries were being pumped out to.
Y. K.
Surprisingly authentic Malaysian food! Definitely going back tomorrow
J. M.
Was invited here for lunch by a friend and had an amazing meal. Lovely Malaysian cuisine.
The Nasi Lemak had a great balance of flavours, the Duck curry was delightful but the best two dishes were the Belacan Ocra and the Penang Char-Kway Teow. The Ocra was wonderfully cooked. The Char-Kway Teow had that lovely wok smokiness to it which elevated the dish.
Will definitely be back.
M. S.
Great Malaysian Chinese restaurant. Authentic and tasty food and fantastic price during lunch. Price is up recently but still worth it.
My favourate is Satay Chicken Stick with Coconut Rice and Nasi Goreng. Yummy! Personally I felt like the Lasksa has left something to desire.
T. H. W.
Very cozy place. Food is pretty authentic. Suitable for people with a lighter palate.

My most favorite Asian restaurant in Canberra!
Too many good things here. The Malaysian Chicken curry, Pork Caramelised dish on the special board, and Eggplant Chicken dish are my favorite..but try other menus as well. Their sambal on the side is fenomenal. I usually asked two small bowls, because one will never be enough :))
E. D.
The Penang Char-Kway Teow was excellent! Lovely charred flavour that you only get with a proper hot wok. The Ayam Kapitan was okay - the chicken was still nice and crispy under the sauce, but the dish was a bit bit too salty (and I like my food salty) & lacking any heat. The serving size was generous. The chicken rice was good. The food arrived quickly and the service was efficient (no fussing about). Would definitely come again.
M. K.
Delicious. Tasty and fresh. Amazing food and fantastic service.
D. D.
Awesome hainan chicken rice!
The staffs were friendly as well!
Highly recommend!
S. K.
Cheap and cheerful, quick service, decent serving size too. I ordered the Boneless Hainanese Chicken Rice which was very tasty but a couple small pieces of cartilages were stuck to the meat, would have given 4 stars otherwise.
Q. N. L.
Came here for the Mother Day’s buffet and it was amazing! The variety is insane and value for money. The ingredients were really fresh too. I love the garlic shrimp, stir fry green beans and curry vegetables especially. The chefs kept cooking and refilling the food! Thank you for being so generous with your portions, I had a great celebration there.
J. T.
Their bak kut teh is definitely my favourite!😍
L. F.
Cheap and delicious. Love their Hainan chicken rice and crispy chicken rice.
J. C.
Food is good but noise levels are atrocious. Being Asian , yeah I know we can get a bit loud, but it certainly is more excessive than most I've been to in Australia. Ok for friends you've known, but I wouldn't meet new people here because all you'd be saying the whole time is " What ? Pardon me ? "
N. B.
Very friendly staff and generous services - chicken curry with Roti, chicken wings were very good. Chicken and sweetcorn soup too was good. Service was friendly and when I asked for more gravy/sauce with the chicken curry, the staff was happy to oblige - be careful, it's hot! So many dishes to try! Will return another time to check them out.
K.
Absolutely delicious - I ordered the chicken and potato curry, a fungus salad, some wings and prawn toast, everything was amazing. Thank you!
Spicy and delicious.
M. C.
My family and friends had lunch at Madam Lu restaurant in October. We have variety of Malaysia dishes, laksa, Hor fan, crispy chicken, Chicken Rice, Duck rice. Laksa is the best ever Malaysia taste in Australia. Love it.
A. G.
Easily the best Malaysian restaurant in town and amongst the best restaurants in Canberra.
J. S.
The best Malaysian food, I ever have in NSW.. 😍😍😍😍
H. T.
Great meals, huge selection, friendly staff.
D. S.
Madam Lu serves very good Peranakan food, the synergy of traditional cooking by Malay wives for Chinese husbands. If you have lived in or visited Malaysia you can get your favourite dishes here. My office is nearby & I lunch here regularly, so I have been right through the menu.
D. Y.
So yummy, The slow cooked pork was perfect. The chicken satay sticks amazing. Service was great, food very yummy and not oily.
S.
Our family is 50% Coeliac (gluten free) Last Friday I dropped a bottle of gluten free soya sauce into Madam Lu's and then we came back later to pick up Dinner for the family. It was fabulous, I highly recommend.
G. K.
Tonight an early dinner for two. Great range of dishes in this licenced and BYO Asian restaurant. The restaurant is clean, well decorated and with pleasant friendly service. Decided just on the two mains and rice. Malay curried lamb (came with a surprize rotti) and shantung chicken. Dishes came out one at a time (which i prefer)with a generous amount of rice. The first dish being the lamb. This was a generous dish, well presented and full of flavour with perfectly cooked lamb which just fell apart.
Next was the Shantung Chicken, again a well presented dish, a generous serve and flavour plus. This dish had a marinated radish in it and garnished with spring onions. This dish surpassed the other well known Canberra resteraunt that does this dish. Anyway all up $56, generous servings and full of flavour. I recommend you try.
H. C.
I would give the place 5 stars for it’s food (great work by the chefs) however 1 star for the service the female who manages the restaurant offers. She is rude and literally screams, not talk, when taking your order. I have seen her treat her kitchen staff very poorly too, screaming at them too. I feel sorry for the staff who have to deal with her. Asking for $1 each for the tinniest container of condiments is an absolute rip off.
C.
Best Malaysian restaurant we’ve tried in Canberra.
Food tastes than papa rich, probably because it’s not a chain restaurant.
M. S.
Genuine Malaysian food. Having the a Malaysian restaurant with the family back in the 90s. Satay is there closest to authentic besides Mamak, without the drive interstate. My son says this is the best Hainanese Chicken ever, angering his Mum in the process. Meal sizes are generous. Wish I could give 6 stars.
J. V.
Boneless Hainan chicken Rice, Kampong Chicken, and Nyonya Fish are yum! Trust me, I am a Malaysian. :P
J. R.
Great, friendly atmosphere with awesome food and lovely owners. Madam Lu is perfect for going out for an great meal with friends or loved ones.
We will definitely be making visits here a regular occurrence!
M. C.
My favourite Canberra restaurant . Beautiful food. Just like Malaysia. I also thought I'd comment on the person who states mince pork under vegetarian. This is completely untrue. It actually says vegetable dishes on the menu meaning the main componant of the dish is vegetables.
A. C.
Excellent food, great service and highly recommend trying the butter sauce crab with yi-min noodles. Style is kind of like malaysian and cantonese which has a nice variety of food.
Would also recommend the hainan chicken rice or prawn-seasoned fried chicken.
Owners and staff are friendly too!
Will come back
A. K.
Delicious chicken laksa, hainanese chicken rice and Char Kuey Teow. Kids enjoyed the fried vanilla ice cream so much! Comfortable seating and excellent service. Can't wait to come back to try more of their dishes!
J. S.
My wife and I missed the taste of Hainanese Chicken Rice, Hokkien Prawn Mee and Teh Tarik. We're glad to have walked upon Madam Lu's here in Canberra and had the chance to taste them again. We'll definitely come back and try other dishes, I'd like to try their Bak Kut Teh next. Service was very good.
K. B.
Best Malaysian Resteraunt in Canberra! Chicken satay skewers are the closest we’d had to the streets of KL. Penang Char Keow Teow was on point, just a touch more heat I’ll ask for next time. Twice cooked pork belly was amazing! As was the wood fungus salad. Hainan chicken rice was ok. The rice itself I felt needed more flavour and was over cooked.
L. S.
The fry rice and soup tasted pretty good. I had some problems with delivery initially but they called me and all sorted. Good service and willing to solve problems. Generally I'm satisfied with the results.
A. S.
This is the best Malaysian restaurant in Canberra.Loved all the food there. WIll be back.
V. L.
Have come here several times and have always left with a satisfied stomach!! food quality is consistent and lunch menu is a bargain with big portion!!!! One of my favourites Asian restaurants in CBR.

S. B.
Good food and central location. Lovely service, although it can be busy so one may need to wait. Portions are well sized and reasonably priced. I enjoyed it very much.
S. H.
Cheap (10 for lunch specials, under 20 for regular dishes), good for the price. Nice interior, plenty of seats for lunch. Don't expect high-end dining, of course.
A. T. (. B.
Food was incredible, service was a bit scattered but they were very busy so that was forgivable.
M. D.
Loved the Hainan Chicken Rice. Good portion size for lunch too.
J. D.
Lovely meal. Uncrowded on a Friday night. Madame is a real character. One of the few BYO restaurants in Canberra. In the Melbourne Building.
M. T.
Good price (starting at $10) and selection of food for the lunch specials. Strange way of charging our cards though - the owner was rounding up all our meals by 10-20c
C. C.
Amazing food with an authentic Malaysian feel to the restaurant. One star off though as the staff did a great job making us feel very uncomfortable.
J. L.
Hainanese and CKT - quite authentic and great value for money
