Comments of Monster Kitchen and Bar
T. P.
Lovely place, it was my second time back here. I love the atmosphere, the food, the music and cocktails at monster kitchen and bar. I love the vibe and it's really a special place and a MUST got to. Very impressive entry as well.
W. T.
Vegetarian restaurant, food is delicious, friendly staff, nice and unusual decoration. We went there at night, illumination is a bit low, and the acoustic isn't very good as it is hard to hear other people. As I said before, food taste great. This is something to try again
M. K.
Top class venue, top class service, and accommodating. I stayed at the hotel but think the service I received was their mode of operation. Bookings are recommended, as every cool lounge was covered before I got there.

Review
We’ve been here twice and both times been served by Lauren. The food is excellent, but honestly the service is what makes the experience fantastic. Being Valentine’s Day it was a really busy night and there was a little bit of a wait to be seated but as soon as we were in we felt very welcomed. Despite how busy it was, our drinks and courses came right on time, every course and drink pairing was thoroughly explained to us, and all of our questions were given thoughtful answers. We had a great night.
C. E.
My partner & I had a fabulous Valentine’s Day dinner at Monster. The set menu was sublime and our host Lauren made our experience so memorable. Her expert knowledge of the menu and insight into the wine pairings were exceptional! Thank you so much for the extra care that made our night perfect.

Great intimate atmosphere. Food was lovely, but the service was very substandard for such a restaurant. I had to ask numerous times to have my sparkling wine topped up as it wasn't at my table. The cocktails were a big no and were undrinkable. I don't usually leave such reviews, but when I took the time to actually write to the restaurant about my experience, they never took the time to even acknowledge my experience. Better reasturants in the area to experience.
N. K.
Not your everyday experience, attentive service and very thoughtfully prepared food. Highlights included the mushroom dumplings, cheese & corn croquettes and the roasted cauliflower. The venue is very eclectic and has a relaxed ambiance. Top marks and I hope I make it back someday.
D. G.
Best vegetarian food I’ve ever had. I didn’t expect vegetables could taste so good. 🤤
A. B.
Fantastic vegetarian meal. There were 5 of us, so we were able to try lots of dishes and they were all very good. Probably my favourites were the dumplings and the yuzu dessert. The ambiance is also really nice. I will make a point of coming back next time I'm in Canberra.

Had an extraordinary night for a private event in the dining room. The food was beautiful, as was the decor. Wanted to shout out China, our bartender, waitress and host. She was always nearby for whatever we needed, went above and beyond to make sure we were drinking well and even arranged a table for kick-ons. Very special night, thanks all.

Amazing 8 course meal.
What an amazing meal. Great flavour combos. We enjoy being introduced to new food and food ideas. Favourites were the cauliflower steak, honey dessert and tomato tartare. Edamame flan also a winner.
I. I.
Wow impressive menu, and equally impressive wine list. Great staff, very switched on.
Food was nice, just a long wait for mains.
J.
Not sure about dinner and lunch. However I had breakfast there and it was nice. A bit pricey though. Service was good.
J. B.
Look I am not a vegetarian aficionado, but I enjoyed the six course menu that advertises with matching wines.. but you only get 4 very small glasses of very tasty wines. Four stars for the four glasses of wine ... still hungry afterwards.
C. S.
Had the 8 course experience for dinner. Service could be better considering the price. We felt that we was rushed to eat and leave. Dishes came two at a time instead of one. Would be nice if staff explain the dishes. Food was alright, on the salty and heavy side.
J. K.
I have been to ‘Monster’ several times and found it especially good for a pre or post movie cocktail or two and sometimes a sharing plate or three🍸🍹. The atmosphere is quite nice and staff usually friendly. When going for a meal be aware the portions are smallish and you will need to order several dishes. It’s a little on the expensive side but the cocktails are worth it.😊

I've been to lots of great restaurants in the USA, Asia, UK, Europe and Australia. This restaurant is one of the best ever. Amazing plant based food, beautiful creations and flavours. Just stunning, amazing experience and fantastic wait staff too.
P. M.
Atmosphere is relaxed and stylish. Extensive drinks list and short food menu. Undoubtedly, the best thing in the menu is the parmesan churros and desserts. Beer selection is set on lagers and amber or pale ale, no IPA options or anything hoppy. Food was nice, however 32$ for half a cauliflower seemed excessive for us as there was nothing outstanding of it: roasted and just some pesto, cream, hydrated raisings and pinenuts. I couldn't see a lot of work in that dish for the price to pay. On the other hand, the vegan chocolate meringue was delicious with an amazing combination of flavours and textures. Finally, it was my birthday and my partner asked secretly to the waitress to bring a candle with dessert or any surprise, but I got none. I was quite disappointed when he told me on our way out as another attendant had the waitress bringing candles and singing. Overall it was a good experience, we might be back just for the churros and dessert.
L. G.
My wife and I had a wonderful time at your restaurant. We were served by the radiant Romy who really ensured our evening went smoothly. So grateful for such an incredible evening.
A. K. G.
Fab experience - first date night out for my husband and I after becoming parents. The food (taste and presentation), service and atmosphere were amazing. Highly recommend!
A. W.
Another amazing vegetarian restaurant. Non-vegetarians really need to give it a go just to see what can be done!
Decor also great. Service exceptional.
K. W.
Lovely ambiance and fun vegetarian food!
C. M.
I always love visiting Monster, it has such a great ambience and the food and drinks are always wonderful

YEAR OF VEGE 🔥🔥🔥 loved the set menu (80pp) - I had vegan version, friends had regular vegetarian version - all were fabulous! Stand out was the watermelon sashimi for me. All was great dishes, super varied and nothing boring. Can't beat the atmosphere and decor at Monster of course too. Definitely a place to take out of towners. Hope the vege continues!
A. F.
I took my mum here to celebrate her birthday and we had a fantastic time. The food and wine were amazing and our waiter was fantastic. We were recommended the green tea dessert and it did not disappoint! Thanks for a great dining experience Monster!
D. B.
Interesting decor. Polite, helpful, efficient service. Very limited range of "in season" cocktails. Adequate food menu. Tasty entrees.
M. V.
We stayed at the Ovolo Nishi over the weekend and it was outstanding! Better yet, Monster Kitchen bar was a delightful surprise serving Modern Japanese fusion menu that time.
We had a few dishes to share, which was very delicious! ( see photos).
My only slight disappointment was the churros, did not live up to the expectations, but a lovely dinner nonetheless. Highly enjoyed our staycation and would do room service next time!
J. L.
Chanced upon their Year of Vege and had the degustation. What a feast of delicious and creative vegetarian dishes! Personal favourite was the watermelon sashimi, so tasty!! The service was also awesome, thank you!!
L. E.
What a meal! Loved it. The tasting dinner menu is so amazing. And the wine list is very impressive.
M. M.
I want to give five stars just for the architecture. This is a fun place to visit - it has tons of fun little nooks and features. Really original, interesting interior design. Very good food, average coffee. Portions are smaller than average for the prices.
G. R.
Delightful and delicious and will not disappoint. Atmosphere is vibrant yet relaxed and visually pleasing. Staff are friendly and professional. Dishes are great for sharing with some excellent vegetarian choices. The desserts are creative and worth keeping room for.
S. S.
Must say this is the best vegetarian dish I’ve ever tried. I’m a big fan of red meat so was a bit hesitant when I learned they switched to a vegetarian menu. Ordered hand crafted spätzle with gruyere and black truffle. Super tasty with umami flavour. Also ordered a glass of Riesling which goes very well with this dish.
J. S.
Ambience is key here at Monster, and is executed brilliantly. The large space feels cozy and busy even when early in the night. The kooky interior design will leave you almost too fascinated to order quickly.
The burratta has our table enthralled from the outset. The eggplant main followed through and felt like a dish made with a lot of love and intent. The muscles and lamb shoulder also performed brilliantly, leaving a picky set of diners very happy. Be sure to leave space for pudding; the chocolate, coffee and hazelnut makes for a genius little take on a well-known pallet combination.
The drinks list has strong game with interesting Japanese beers for the hop-and-barley connoisseur, while a well curated wine list will provide plenty of choice to fuel good chat.
Go here for a superbly curated dinner, enjoying every mouthful of delicious, and enjoy wondering at every aspect of the experience!
G. D.
Great find ! Quick friendly service and enjoyed the decor & ambiance of the venue . The main restaurant was closed but they were happy to accommodate in the bar area - I ordered the steak and it was done to perfection.
D. H.
The restaurant itself is in a beautiful building. I appreciated the interior design - plenty instagramable moments. The food was lovely however the staff were a little busy and not very attentive.
M. A. A.
Delicious as always. Vegan options are tasty and full of flavour. Great service.
T. M.
Intriguing vegetarian set menu on a Saturday evening. Not everything worked for us - but everything was interesting and done with flair. Despite the appearance of plenty of acoustic damping, there are too many hard surfaces reflecting high levels of background noise. Staff having to wear masks made it harder to understand what we were being told about dishes. That said the staff were friendly and made our visit enjoyable. Kudos for making a serious fist of presenting a creative menu of vegetarian options.
R. F.
Another delightful meal at Monster thanks to our knowledgeable server Nathan who guided us through the meal with his amazing personal wine pairing suggestions. Was an evening to remember!
K. J.
Service is excellent. Each staff worked efficiently and have good acknowledge about food.
The flavour of the dishes for dinner are unforgettable. I like the Brussels sprouts with morcilla and the smoke maple ice cream. We forgot to take a picture for the morcilla. The one below is smoke maple ice cream. That is the must-try dessert. You won't regret about it.
However, the coffee here lack of consistency. We stayed three night in the ovolo hotel and had breakfast here for three times. I ordered the same same coffee, Almond milk Flat white, but got different thing every times. The picture below shows the best result I had got.
H. W.
The new Vegetarian/Vegan only menu is excellent. I'm neither of those, but the meals are appealing to even the most ravenous of carnivores. I had a good laugh when the vegetarian menus still came out in *leather* folders - sorry, but that kind of hilarious oversight loses a star.
A. F.
Quirky hotel bar. Great food and drinks options with now all vegetarian. I love that this place has gone vego. The coffee is great too.
N. T.
Food and staff were great! Would highly recommend. Ambiance was perfect for a nice dinner. As a meat eater was amazed at how good the all vego degustation was. Def worth adding to your list.
L. T.
The pulled lamb shoulder was definitely the star of our meal. Skip the quail. Paid parking is available out front.
D. H.
Monster kitchen have now gone vegetarian and offer an 8 course degustation set menu amongst other options including a la carte. What an awesome delicious meal, we found we couldn't fault a course. Added to the experience was attentive front of house staff that were engaging friendly and knowledgeable. A great initiative of this chain to go vego for year, with this standard of service and food, we are sure they will remain vego once word gets out. They also have vegan options for those with this preference. This restaurant will now become one of our favourites for a fine dining experience.
D. B.
Had the eight-course set menu and it was fantastic! The stand outs were the edamame with miso soup and the cauliflower with enoki mushrooms. If you are looking for a high-end vegetarian restaurant with a great vibe, this is your place.
A. L.
Great atmosphere and the lighting was perfect for taking photos of food! But seriously the food was great. Definitely coming back again

Seriously big fancy vegan food and bar selection a top the best staircase in CBR.
Some very tasty surprises too, recommend the parmesan churros!

The place had a cozy ambience, staff were attentive and courteous.

Amazing space and atmosphere. They promote starter plates and "share" plates, but its the same are ordering entrees and mains. We were seated promptly and given menus and water, but were then forgotten. I had to chase the waiter to take our order. Starter of feta blended with pistachio, honey and rose with sourdough was delicious. Eye fillet was cooked sous vide then finished on the grill, so medium was actually well done. It was topped with a huge unappealing boiled cabbage leaf, which was strange. The duck confit was tasty, but cooked unevenly - parts were raw, parts well done. Confit means "twice cooked" - this was only half cooked.
3 1/2 stars but we'll give them the benefit of a doubt and make it 4.
A. H.
Flavour, presentation and the relaxed, high-end design make this modern, Mediterranean Mecca the place to eat. Meat eaters won't notice what's missing because the food is sublimely satisfying and filling. The service was quick and personable. My only tiny whinge would be around the small, pricey wine list. I'll still be back for the food and atmosphere!
J. T.
Ovolo recently took over the hotel and it's just as brilliant. Props for hiring people of colour to manage as well as work the floor (probably due to the company being an Asian one). Pictured here is the beef tartare and black rice cracker - beautiful smooth raw flesh and a cracker with a crisp, crackly texture. Another recommendation is the mussels - salty broth (probably due to the nduja) but they even offered more bread to sponge up the soup.
J. W. L.
My second time eating here and really like the flavor combinations and Japanese influence. Highly recommend the slow cooked lamb. It’s a sharing plate approach so be prepared for this.
M. D.
If anything deserves 5 stars, this place does. Truly outstanding Surroundings, Service and Food. If you're in the area, you've missed out if you don't go.
M. M.
Innovative fit-out and funky food concepts. The $70 chefs menu is the way to go (“,)

Had an amazing evening at Monster to celebrate a birthday. The waitstaff were attentive, generous and friendly, and the food was out of this world!
My partner is vegetarian and very much enjoyed the fine dining experience with completely free choice of every menu option. As an omnivore, I’m already making plans to return - everything was delicious! I highly recommend the tomato entree in particular.
Sydney and Melbourne have fantastic elevated fully vegetarian/vegan restaurants, so it’s wonderful to have such an option in Canberra, even if only for a year. Who knows, perhaps they’ll keep it up! 🤞
D. S.
Wonderful set menu and variety of vegetarian dishes
A. V. K.
Had such an beautiful time here the other night. Absolutely delicious food and amazing service. Thank you AJ and Phoebe for making our dining experience so special. I’ll be back for sure!
J. H.
This place does some delicious cocktails at a decent price! Definitely recommend if you want some chill drinks with some mates!
A. T.
It's been a while since I have been back here and they still impress me. Favourite dish was definitely the tomato my favourite and they highlighted the flavours of tomatoes so well!
K. M.
Really nice restaurant and bar. Good atmosphere and just a nice chill place
A.
Ovolo's "YEAR OF THE VEG" has been wonderfully executed at Monster, with the food remaining just as delicious as ever. Having a few plates to share after seeing a movie downstairs is a fantastic experience, and the scenery adds to the very unique vibe of the Nishi Building.
Hope to see more exciting events like May's Monster Mash in the future.
K.
The atmosphere is wonderful, the staff are lovely and the food is pretty great. I love the fact that a vegan diet is catered for. The service however wasn't as good as I was expecting. I also think a booking system is needed for people wanting to come to dine in rather than having to rock up and hope to get a table. A dessert wine was needed on the menu especially when you have such an array of wonderful food items. The cocktails were fabulous but I was disappointed with how many drinks were out of stock on the menu. From this experience I will be back for a drink as I'm still thinking about the cocktails and the atmosphere of the venue but I dont know if I would for the rest.
T. B.
Great food, great service, great venue.
Had a nice dinner there Saturday night. Food was excellent, some interesting dishes that were not the norm but very well done. Service was excellent, always there when we were ready but not intrusive. Nice wine list with some good Canberra region wines. The place was nearly full but we still had no trouble having a conversation. Highly recommend.
J. A.
The meals are good but can barely be called meals as they are such small portions - be prepared to order multiple. The food and drinks are also very pricey. A lemon, lime and bitters cost $8 and it just tasted like lemonade. The atmosphere seems nice which is a small positive.
K. S.
Amazing food ! Friendly staff . SOOO yum
L. S.
Expensive but pleasant. The exclusiveness of an airport club lounge without the need to fly anywhere
W. S.
Food so delicious and love the share plate idea!
C. N.
It isn't everyday I rate 5 stars.
Had dinner there recently (June 2019), seated next to the fire which was wonderful.
Service was attentive but not obtrusive and the foods we ordered excellent.
The Broccoli and 28 day dry-aged Flat Iron were absolutely superb.
Managed to get out the door for under $150 for two, which I thought pretty good value given the quality of food, setting and service. Highly recommended
R. S.
Food and drinks were great, service was well intentioned but a bit off the mark
B.
We had a really good experience at Monster Bar! Good food and friendly service.
We ordered a few share plates which were all decent sizes and really yum. Definitely recommend the parmesan churros!
We told the waiter that we only had half an hour before we needed to leave (poor planning on our part), and he had all 5 dishes out in less than ten minutes.
Would visit again!
C.
It was very intetesting. The food was interesting. The "parmesan churros with fondue" was a little disappointing. The churros were a little oily and the cheese sauce was a bit heavy with the parmesan. It needed a lighter sauce to balance the oil. The "butternut katsu curry" was a crumbed and fried slice of pumpkin with some light curry sauce. A flavourful proper curry would have been better. The carrot and brocolini sides were very good. The chocolate meringue dessert was OK. I was disappointed to find a Coles style packet meringue with a very ordinary chocolate sauce. The passionfruit sorbet was a highlight, though. The decor was very well done.
S. C.
The place had a cozy ambience, staff were attentive and courteous.

Great Chardonnay, great food, great decor. Cocktails were also lovely. Service was really bad. Staff were wandering around without concern for whether things we ordered ever came - I had to ask three times to follow up our oysters. I would give 5 for the food and wine, but the staff were not interested. A shame really.
G. S. -. L. W.
Love this place. Food was delicious!
A. M.
Amazing innovative food- especially loved the cauliflower, the churros (will dream about these!) and the Saetzle. Gorgeous venue with moody lighting and wonderful service from Fiola who was attentive to our needs and guided us through the menu. It’s great for Canberra to have more vegetarian options and an experimental menu!
R. A.
Had been to Monster before and it was amazing, however my most recent visit was a real let down. I visited recently after iso restrictions had lifted and things were starting to open. We had an early booking (5.30) as the place was booked out, we arrived on time, but still had to wait a while to be seated. The floor staff told us to wait at the bar, and the bar staff told us we couldnt order until we had been assigned a table. So not off to a great start. We finally got seated, and the service from our table waiter was great.
The food menu was very small, but understandable as they had only recently reopened. However, if there is a limited menu, one would expect the food to be great. It was not. Many items arrived room temperature, not hot, the burrata arrived and it was clearly a different cheese (mozzarella) and the roast pumpkin was not pleasant tasting.
Having recommended Monster to many people, it was quite disappointing to return and see the quality had dropped significantly.
D. M.
I felt my experience was pretty average. The food was lovely and presented well but I felt the service for the price you paid. We got the monster feast where they give you a range and we were not sure what we were getting. For not knowing the food wasn’t explained very well some weren’t explained at all. When asked questions the hostess didn’t know what it was or what it tasted like. Also they forgot we had a dessert. Overall it’s a lovely place but for the prices you pay you should get good service.
M. B.
You can't argue with the atmosphere of this place. The ambience is definitely on point. The food has a very modern focus and the presentation of even the the most simple dishes they have on offer is sublime.
I went here multiple times over my stay in Canberra, and wasn't necessarily disappointed with any of the meals I had here. The toast on the breakfast menu was a little firm for my liking, but every other meal I had was sensational. I will say though, you certainly pay the premium price for it. I'd say it's worth it, in most cases.
As a side note the coffee was very good, a little different every time I had it, but never in a negative way. There was always a baristas charm with it. The service was good, despite what I saw in other reviews. They were generally very helpful, and friendly. I'll be sure to return in the future!
E. M.
Having read a number of negative reviews I thought twice about dining here. However, I've just finished a delicious meal (market fish and brocollini), which was delivered very promptly. The flavours were wonderful as was the presentation. The male waiter who served me left a little to be desired but the maitre'd was very friendly and overall I had a very good experience.
S. W.
Had the high tea, food was delicious and the unlimited teas were so good. The Vermont Chai was a highlight, so creamy and comforting
M. A.
Very good food and drink. Staff were helpful and friendly. Probably the only issue was that our table appeared to be a bit off the beaten track for the wait staff and getting their attention could take some time, but service after that was flawless. Kids were well catered for. Definitely going back again when I'm next in Canberra.
m. k.
The atmosphere and service was Devine. The cocktails lovely. The price for the portion and quality of food a bit overpriced. The cheese plater consisted of three small slices of cheese which would serve one person. The chocolate moose reminded me of something that would be served in bulk at a canteen with blocks of gelatine based desert. I will return for a cocktail but not the food.
D. B.
4.5 stars for food, presentation and atmosphere, but lacks a little in staff experience. Some staff are fantastic and have great knowledge of the food, but others have no idea about even the wine they're selling. The manager was definitely in the know, but needs to make sure his staff are too.
C. M.
The food and venue are great but I feel it is a little overpriced compared with other similar places. We had a large group and ordered a range of different dishes. The food overall was tasty but there were a few things that let it down. The tomato dish was my favourite and the quail was disappointing. I would have given a five star rating if the food was slightly better or the price slightly lower.
V. T.
We’ve dined at Monster for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and special occasions over the years. However, on our most recent visits we noticed the menu has changed (only slightly), yet the dishes lacked something...and the overall cost was more expensive. The cocktails are also very expensive and dated? in comparison to other restaurants & bars.
Today we went for breakfast. The changes to the dining layout are not very inviting. It’s changed the atmosphere and lost its appeal. The crowd were mostly guests of the hotel, which felt a bit strange.
The service was friendly, and whilst the food was more or less the same as usual...the presentation was lacking, and the coffee was burnt. Overall a very average experience. Sad to the see that since the change in ownership & head chef it’s no longer as great as it once was.
J. R.
Loved the interior decoration. Every corner and book managed to have its own style while still being a part of the whole. The desserts were expensive (expected) but tasty. Felt very comfortable here. Will absolutely go again.
J. P.
Beautiful space, great staff and delicious food.
M. M.
Great atmosphere. The architecture & little nooks make the space. Great for cocktails if you are looking for a more intimate setting. My partner and I ate here for the first time last night. Portions are a little small for the price. We got one Bar plate, two shares plates, one dessert, and a drink each, this cost us $129 - we both admitted we weren't quite full. The food was of a high standard and we were pleased with what we tried.
A. C.
Great hip-new age food and interesting experience. Overall a delicious place to try some wacky dishes.
Staffing seems to be a little sparse and sometimes I'm waiting a long time to receive table service. However its still pretty good.
R. B.
Monster bar is a fine establishment. In particular I would like to thank Claire for her hospitality and truly making my friends 18th birthday party a treat. We wish her all the best in her career and see a great future ahead for her.
D. L.
Well I could go on about this dish and that dish but I can save us all time quite easily. The food is excellent!
The experience for me was unique for Canberra. Great, not good, great food in a casual atmosphere. Yes it is expensive but when you appreciate how much work goes into each dish it all seems worth it to me. I urge anyone who likes Asian inspired culinary delights to try it at least once. I will be back as often as my wallet allows.
B. M.
Came here for a birthday dinner and ended up having one of the banquets... The food was amazing. Beautifully presented and the staff catered for the dietary requirements of the group. They were careful to note if GF people were celiac etc. When the desserts come out the one for the person celebrating their birthday was specially decorated. By the end of the banquet everybody was super full. A little more on the expensive side, that said it's top quality.
M. M.
The food itself was nice, but the menu overall is very confused. Not sure if a few of the servers were new but a couple mistakes were made and we received a few of our dishes twice which makes me think the floor staff and kitchen weren't on the same page.
There was some sort of event going on in the front rooms so we had no views, not a big deal, especially since they had a live violinist playing a mini concert for the event and we were next to the room and could hear the music very well. Made for nice background music.
C. T.
This was a hit and a miss.. Maybe it was a off night. They missed a dish. Some dishes were too big and conflicting flavours. They didn't know what vegan wines were, I had to educate the staff member.
v. g.
It's a monster of a place, good for what it is....will go again...not ideal for quite drink...will go elsewhere for those...
L. Y.
Great location, architecture, fab art and interiors. Music is good too so a good vibe and food is very good. The wime and cocktail list is extensive. By the glass impressive. The Service lets this place down. Its tedious and slow so very slow. Not enough staff generally. People order drinks they cant flag down staff. An issue. Please lift your service game.
A. F.
Service was wonderful. Food was lovely but our waitress was better. Would go again although $32 for grilled cauliflower was a bit too dear
M. J.
Thank you guys for an absolutely wonderful dinner-dispite the current circumstances! We got a takeaway and were able to have an absolutely lovely meal for our date night this evening. Everything was still hot and delicious when we got home-those croquettes are to die for!!
E. G.
Such a lovely place. The food was amazing and creative, the whole experience was delicious. Impeccable customer service. Highly recommend!

I love the ambience of this place but feel the experience dies not always live up to the promise. We came for nibbles and wine before the movies and ordered a cheese platter. Out came a plate with some crisp bread and one cheese, plus a fruit paste. For $28 we felt this was a bit of a joke. The wait staff told us it’s called s cheese plate - not platter - but we still felt robbed. The share plates menu doesn’t change enough to keep locals interested and the serves are so small that you need to spend a lot to feel you’ve eaten. It’s a lovely set up but we won’t be back till something shifts in how they approach the menu.
C. B.
We met some friends for dinner here with our 2 year old. The staff were great and explained all the menu and specials to us. Cocktails were brought out quickly and wine was replenished too. We shared a bunch of things from the menu, and while some were on the small side, everything was so tasty and the atmosphere perfect.
L. L.
We've dined here several times and enjoyed it thoroughly each time. We usually have the degustation menu so we can try a few different dishes. Creative and interesting menu combinations, but can be a little less romantic due to the bustling atmosphere and large space under a high ceiling. Still a great night out!
T. C.
I've been to Monster a few times before and never been impressed and never understood why people rated it. But this time was different. Clearly a massive step up. The salmon was exceptional. The pickled veg was good but not amazing and needed more vegetables. Based on the food this time, I would definitely go back for more and try a few other dishes.
K. S.
Service is very hit and miss. Visited a few times over the course of the weekend (staying at Ovolo Nishi), and the service was either excellent (very friendly and attentive), or really bad (given drinks/food menu and then forgotten about - waited over 30 minutes for somebody to take our order before giving up and leaving). The staff are really lovely and friendly but it seems that for the price of the menu items, the service should be better. Doesn't seem to be enough staff to cover the entirety of the restaurant. Food is good though.
R. F.
Designed for share plates. You need to order one and a half dishes for one person. Small portions, around $35 each. Interesting mix of decor. Trying to target upmarket customers. Food was nice however not sure it was worth the price tag.
E. M.
Delicious food and excellent service. We got the feed the monster special and each dish was a surprise. The atmosphere is fantastic and the wine list had some really excellent local wines.
E. S.
Phenomenal vegetarian autumn degustation menu in 2022
J. S.
Favourite restaurant in Canb. Great food, savvy design and friendly staff. Treated my better half for his b’day. Shared lamb ribs (thumbs up), beetroot & steak between two of us + a dessert each + a beautiful bottle of red. All together at $168, not bad at all for what we had. Definitely coming back.
X. G.
High prices and hype, average food and service. Expensive.
J. M.
This is the place is the place everyone loves to hate! But it is actually pretty good in my opinion. The food I had there was of reasonable quality. Kingfish and lamb dishes were quite nice. Great selection of drinks (it is technically a bar after all). Atmosphere is magnificent! As for the price, YES it is expensive. But its NewActon after all. If you walk into this place looking for a bargain, you are a fool. This is not a hole-in-the-wall eatery. Nice place to hang out if you have money. Service is OK, nothing special for a high-end place.
T.
Meals were full of flavour and everything was cooked to perfection. Definitely recommend the eggplant as a main!
Service was also exceptional. Waiters were helpful and attentive.
Partner and I will definitely be going back :)
K. L.
Was here early Autumn and everything was consistently delicious. Best tasting menu I have had in Canberra and I have been trying them all.
J. F.
Came here a few weekends ago and was very well looked after. The service was outstanding, food delicious and wine to match. Not cheap, but worth every cent. Thanks guys, we'll be back!
E. D.
I had a great time at monster kitchen and bar. The food, beverage and service was great. My only criticism is that the uniform didn't seem to match the style of the restaurant.
D. M.
This is currently the place with the best food in Canberra. Service is a little slow though, with drinks often coming out after the food has been finished. Would rate it 5 stars if they hired more staff.
R. P.
Nice place to catch up before catching a movie at the cinema. The menu contains a good selection. The food is very good. The place can get noisy and everyone tends to be shouting at each other, a problem with these open style spaces. Overall a pleasant place.
J. H.
I have not eaten at this restaurant. It was booked out. But I pressed my face to the window and watched the people inside, and let me tell you - if it tastes as good as it looks, then damn. Five stars.
Z.
Understaffed. Limited food menu for brunch. Coffee decent but not the best in town. Bit disappointing overall.
P. J.
Hosted our Christmas party in the private room which was wonderful! Kate made things so easy and accommodated for last minute changes also.
P. E.
Great food. Don't be worried if you don't have a booking, they let you sit around the lobby at lots of spare seats and order off their menu. It's a great way to eat here without a booking. It's an expensive meal, but food was really nice.
M. L.
Innovative, dynamic menu. Wait staff are well trained - discreet, professional, knowledgeable. Jaw dropping architecture and interior design, many different sections, something to suit everyone's taste (so long as they have good taste). Not overpriced. Refreshing.
T. M.
Nice food, interesting decor. Food is quite pricey but has flavour and share plates work well. Drinks menu is extensive, no shortage of fine wines
A. H.
Easily the best restaurant in Canberra. The food is spectacular, innovative. Great selection of wine and occasionally a sommelier around to chat with on the wine. Service is the best in town. Great place all around.
L. F.
Amazing food and service. The decor is great and very impressive.
N. C. (.
Cool place. The food whilst interesting didn't blow my mind but that might because I'm a little jaded with the while multiple taste and texture way of cooking and presenting. Still though if you're keen on a nice bar and restaurant in an architectural environment this place is certainly worth checking out.
k. p.
We have eaten at Monster 4 or 5 times before and always loved it, but now it has the distinct vibe of 'new management's. Sadly the service is not what it used to be and not what we expected given the price point. Also some elements a little stale... We've hit peak Monster and won't be back.
M. G.
Love monster!!!! Incredible atmosphere, excellent food and the staff truly are wonderful. Highly recommend
R. B.
Really amazing atmosphere and delicious food
K. D.
Incredible vegetarian food and amazing service. This restaurant just took over as my favourite dining experience in Canberra. Thank you!
R. H.
Funky vibe and awesome vegetarian food. We arent vegetarian but really enjoy the experience and flavours. Will return!
R. S.
Nice bar, dim lighting gives that moody feel. Service a bit slow. Shame the menu is all vegetarian!
D. D.
At first glance, reeks of excellence in terms of decoration, food presentation and customer service. We had the pork neck bao (snack size, good flavours), desserts (creme catalan: smooth and creamy yet not heavy) and tea (tea was extremely strong, they were very generous with their tea leaves). Place was extremely warm and cozy.
Everything was great, until the end when we settled the bill, we were charged $5 extra for something that we didn't order. I realised it when I asked for the tax invoice and notified the staff. Instead of being apologetic, I was made feeling like it was my fault that I made a fuss over $5. I know it was not a lot of money, but it's a matter of principle and it wasn't my fault that they made a mistake in the bill. In summary, like the others said, service can be a bit of a hit and miss.
D. T.
Food was magnificent and our waitress was an absolute delight. Truely a wonderful evening.
L. B.
Fine, fairly consistent food but no wow moments. Service fine, fairly consistent but no wow moments. Cocktail list is overcomplicated (also no wows). Wine list is exxy. Wouldn't rush back.
A. D.
This place never disappoints - from a cozy casual afternoon catch up with the girls to a date to impress someone of interest.... The food is delicious, the cocktails inventive and the wait staff are attentive without being overbearing. I've been many times and I'll be back many more 😊
A. T.
Took my girlfriend for her birthday dinner here and was very impressed with the level of service and food. Big bold flavours with beautiful presentation.
S. S. S. T.
Amazing food is an understatement! Service was impeccable- especially the lovely Claire! Will rave about this place for ages!
J. O.
At one of the entrances to Monster, a restaurant/bar in Canberra, there's a row of bicycles. For a brief second I wondered if they might have been the bicycles used by the staff to get to and from the restaurant, though I quickly concluded they were probably there "for effect". "It's very hipster", my friend Patrick commented.
The other thing that's very "hipster" (the word's so over-used I'm not really sure what it means anymore) was one of the bar snacks we had leading to our main meals: a jaffle/toasted sandwich that contained yabby. It was very tasty, and was a really terrific accompaniment to a glass of pinot gris, as we chatted, catching up on each other's lives.
As I was already planning to come down for work, I decided to make weekend of it, go to some of the galleries, and catch up with some friends. Patrick advised "Monster" was one of the hip places to eat in Canberra right now, and this evening's meal clearly showed why.
Like a lot of places these days, Monster's evening session is dominated by sharing plates. After the jaffle, we continued with the cured kingfish, some pork-belly, and some very toasty smoked eggplant. We also squeezed in some pannacotta. Four glasses of wine and five meals set us back $126 which wasn't bad at all. We probably should have just bought a bottle of wine. In Sydney, the same meal probably would have set us back an extra $30 or $40. The presentation was good for all. The tastes were also good, especially the kingfish which we both rated highly. The staff were also good: friendly, smiling and attentive without being in your face.
The design of the restaurant's also really interesting. Although there are lots of shared tables, they're designed (with lots of diagonal lines) in such a way that you don't feel like you're seated at the same table as other people. I also really like the wood panelling that dominates one of the entrances.
D. C.
Have been here twice, once was a drive from Sydney just for lunch. Shared plates each time. Everything was excellent, even things I wouldn't normally eat.
M. R.
Food and service was great. The breakfast menu is quite different. Coffees were a bit average considering the area. You'll find much better within a block or two!
J. M.
Clare is the best ever hands down, she gave the most incredible service and made my bfs bday the most amazing time ❤️ we love Clare
C.
Claire was a great host and looked after our table with amazing hospitality and care, all of us will sure to visit again!
R. V.
Great menu offerings!! Wine list is just amazing and Kunal was a great host. He really looked after us very well.
A. O.
A friend and I enjoyed lunch here recently. The food was interesting, very tasty and cooked to perfection. Great wine list with lots of local wines. Very friendly wait staff.
X. R.
Fantastic atmosphere and great food
J. P.
Enjoyed our vegetarian feast
J. M.
Excellent service. Had a glass of wine after work with a friend. No signage if you come from the cinema side, so rest assured you're at Monster if you're at the top of the stairs.
T. B.
Food is creative and has excellent flavours. Service can be hit and miss, otherwise would be five stars.
The Breakfast is great and well priced.
G. M.
Just wow. All the food was stunning and delicious, had a great chat with the wait staff. I recommend trying their Manhattan.
Awesome atmosphere if not a little swanky
S. D.
We visited Monster for dinner during a long weekend and it was the highlight of our Canberra trip!! Food was all the flavours and textures you would want. Interesting pairings of flavours from Asia and Australia. A gem of Canberra.
S. G.
Dining in what is essentially the hotel checkin is a little weird at first. The sommelier is helpful and theres an ok selection of local wines. Food as share plates is ok although the lamb was pretty tasteless and the beetroot not cooked enough for a tasty salad.
E. Y.
Great Food. Will come back again.
O. P.
Monsterously good atmosphere. Small share plates, bought out slowly. Wonderful flavours. Pleasant service. Overpriced. Burnt bread... enough said.
A. M.
Beautiful and delicious food and drinks. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Well worth the visit!
S. H. F.
Food wasn't too bad but had to wait quite a while for our meal. It was reasonably busy but may have to look at extra staff.
S. C.
Great staff, beautiful atmosphere and amazing food. The red wine glasses are impressive.
F. G.
Excellent Serviceand the food equally good
S. B.
Excellent service but left feeling hungry. Share plates expensive and small. Recently taken over by new owners and the restaurant has moved out of the lobby into its own dining area which definitely takes away the buzz and atmosphere it used to have. A little disappointed
T. C.
Bar and share plates where good. Especially the wagyu and bone marrow. But the desserts were too sweet and not pleasant, and I’m a sweet tooth. The desserts let the whole meal down.
M. L.
They got two of our orders wrong. The flavours in my pulled lamb shoulder were individually quiet nice, but did not balance when combined.
G. H.
The menu is confusing and limited, the food was good quality but not outstanding and the service was sloppy. Monster was my favourite Canberra restaurant but sadly this is no longer the case.
L. T.
We couldn't finish our meal as the dish was very tart. The cocktails were yummy. The ambience is very nice. The prices are expensive
N. O. (. O. P.
The food was exquisite, lovely staff and an all around good experience, but I'm a simple man with simple food needs. In this case larger portions.
This isn't a fault with Monster, just suited to a different type of diner.
W. Y.
Dinner is just downright delicious and delightful. With a share plate feel, dishes represent a mashup of Asian meets modern Australian. Highlights were the Eggplant/Smoked Goats Curd and Steamed Barramundi.
G. N.
Once again, a fantastic experience dining in the salon area. As for service, we were fortunate enough to have Emily who was a wonderful host.
T. I.
Lots of favourite books, and delicious vegetarian foods
R. S.
One of my favourite places in Canberra, food is always fantastic but it's also just a great place to catch up with friends over a drink.
C. R.
Amazing architecture and the food is first class. It's a great place to bring friends for lunch, dinner, drinks or even to bring a laptop and work on your own.
A. L.
Very cool decor and ambience. However, the food is pretentious and neither satisfying nor particularly nice. A great place to bring people for drinks.
B. M.
Best Amaretto Sour cocktail I've ever had.
J. N.
Food was pleasant without being spectacular. Considering the limited menu, I was surprised that one of mains was unavailable by 7.30pm on a Friday night. Table staff were inefficient and disorganised. Rest of the staff were well briefed.
H. L.
Nice warm modern art interior. I had a Wagyu Intercostals dish which was hands-down the best meat dish I've ever had; mindblowingly delicious and soft
M. M. K.
The quality of the food at Monster is inversely related to the quality of its service; the former is stunning, the latter appalling. To an inquiry about how good the coffee is, the waitress replied "it's coffee" in the tone of a insouciant teenager and sauntered off
J. M.
Nice place to share a good lunch/dinner with family or friends. However I think the prices are quite high if you compare them with the quality, portions and service.
J. B.
Gorgeous food, and waitress Katie really was great with terrific wine and shared plate suggestions. Loved every morsel!
T. (. P. C.
Really cool place with an incredible entry and 70s style lounge. The food has always been consistently great and their desserts are fantastic.
A. S.
Fantastic meal and wonderful atmosphere.
Cannot believe how quick our meals were served.
D. E.
I can't comment on the food, but the bar is very modern, laid back and trendy. Lounging around the fire with a local Canberra wine is great.
C. L.
Beautiful decoration, amazing environment, tasty food
J. v. d. M.
Amazing flavours and presentation. Definitely recommend share plates to sample more of the beautiful food.
J. G.
Trying to be something it isn't. Fusion Japanese Australian dining for yuppies who don't know good food if it hit them. Canberra style dining at its finest lol
P. B.
Fantastic acoustics and cosy seating. The perfect late night venue if you enjoy talking with your friends more than yelling over music.
M. W.
Food: top notch. Drinks: next-level. Service: amazing. Will certainly head back next time I'm in Canberra.
M. F.
Great atmosphere, very relaxing, love their chairs and couches, foods great. Beautiful setting. We will be back!!
C. G.
Didn't love the food and the ambience was lacking.
S. S.
Very accommodating for a large fussy group. Great atmosphere and menu. Professional polite staff
K. C.
Great atmosphere and architecture. Nothing "beige" about this place! Granola delicious and healthy. A must visit when in Canberra
P. N.
Nice venue however the food was rather salty. Not the ideal place to eat but fun place to drink. Good selection of drink menu.
I. D.
Incredible vegan cheesecake dessert!!! Great service and vibe, love the vegetarian menu
M. Y.
It's delish and even when they make mistakes wow so they go hard to rectify things. Still one of Canberra's best
T. K. N.
Nice breakfast, very nice staff.
M. L.
Came for drinks only, but it was still great. Friendly staff, great drink selection, awesome atmosphere. Architecture is amazing in this place.
M. L.
One of the best in Canberra. Delectable, intricately arranged share plates; Monster is contemporary dining at its finest.
T.
The layout design is fine, but every dish here seems to be entree size, I'm still a bit hungry after having two mains
H. C.
Fabulous food, service was friendly and attentive. Honestly can’t fault it. Will go back
R. B.
Lovely atmosphere and environment. Will 100% go back for dinner.
T. A.
Really interesting restaurant with modern and slightly experimental food. Great vibe here in the New Acton arts district.
T. Y. L.
Fun ambience - you can spend quite some time admiring the decor. Some great local wines and home to the now famous yabby jaffles.
K. K.
One of the best. Consistent high quality, inventive food combinations, excellent quality, friendly service, all set in a very funky environment.
A. G.
Fantastic food, nice location, unfortunately the bar service was really slow which let them down. I will eat in the restaurant again though.
M. R.
Had a wonderful time. Attentive staff and lovely tasty meal. Interesting place to wander through. Ty all.
B. M.
Clare has been so welcoming and friendly, best waitress and best food
B. P.
A pleasant deck to loosen up with a cold beer in your hand. This has become one of my favorite places to relax.
E. V.
Fish was very dry however the service and cocktails were great. Average experience in general.
E. H.
Food was amazing, service was great, decor was entertaining, atmosphere was relaxed but hip, wide wine selection!
B. Q.
The food was great, but it is all designed for sharing so it can be quite annoying if you have dietary requirements or lots of people who want lots of different things.
C. A.
I love Monster. Not the best service that I’ve had in Canberra, but passable. The food is excellent.
E. A.
Well portained meals at a great price. Friendly service and nice atmosphere. Defnieley coming back
L. M.
This is a hard one to review, their dinners are incredible but their breakfasts are subpar. I'd definitely recommend their dinner to anyone.
C. B.
My partner and I loved it. Service amazing, food amazing. From snobby Sydney dining
H. S.
Great food in a funky environment. The service is very friendly but lacking in professional oversight which is disappointing in a restaurant of this caliber.
B.
Slow service because they were so busy but amazing cocktails!
C. W.
We love to visit Monster Kitchen. Great for a cocktail and bar snacks before a movie or a full meal.
R. l.
Very nice atmosphere, great service and delicious food. Totally recommend this place .
J. C.
Came here for lunch while in Canberra for the weekend. Food was good and there were some creative dishes.
K. M.
Great ambience, wonderful menu coupled with excellent service, made for a fantastic evening.
L. B.
Our coffee was cold, even though there seemed to be plenty of wait staff. A bit disappointing with the food for a number of our table of 8
K.
Sit by the open fire and share a plate and a cuppa with a friend. Enjoy brunch in the Salon with the family..... Monster has something for everyone.
T. F.
Great meals . Staff are enthusiastic and friendly and a lovely place to sit by the fire.
L. P.
Very good food. The drinks menu is actually a book. Expensive.
t. c.
Food was very nice, staff were attentive but overall severely over priced; No value for money here.
M. K.
Delicious dessert and drink
D. M.
Food and service was outstanding! Beef Tatare was the pick of our meal choices.
A. H.
Very chilled atmosphere with a high quality meal. Overall an enjoyable meal.
M.
Fantastic dinning experience, loved the fresh, delicious food and the service was exeptional
s. C.
Amazing food! Best dinner we had in Canberra.
K.
A Reuben has more than one slice of meat in it. A real Reuben should have at least 2cms high of meat
A. A.
Great atmosphere, amazing food, v reasonably priced. Loved it.
W. C.
Amazing food. Must visit for both great design and fantastic food!
F.
Really funky venue - not fussed over the menu selection could have more variety
J. T.
Excellent food, slightly confused service but overall highly recommended
J. W.
Pricey but for the best of reasons, easily one of the best eats in Canberra.
S. M.
The most interesting menu in Canberra by far! Try the smoked eggplant - it's killer.
C. H.
Great food morning noon and night tasty drinks Probably a touch on the pricey side
M. G.
I stay at hotel hotel every week. I can't fault the food ever but the service is atrocious.
M. J.
Top rated food and really neat architecture
L. W.
Friendly, polite and quick service. Generous amount of food. Convenient location.
K. H.
So very different compared to the others. Great food, great atmosphere, great service and all done differently.

Somewhat overhyped for what it is but great ambiance and design.
E. D. Q.
Delicious food beautiful building. Wasn't in a rush so service was fine
