Comments of Bar Wa Izakaya
H. N.
My family and I visited this place twice during our holiday to Hobart. We loved it because the dishes were fresh, tasty and well presented. Drinks menu had a great variety of Japanese imports. It was also family friendly and had a welcome atmosphere. I liked how the bathrooms had the Japanese toilets and the Japanese language lessons playing- really cool. Staff were excellent and good looking too 😉.
P. T.
We have just arrived Hobart for the first time and as it was already 8pm and most of restaurants were closing soon, we Google and found this gem! Food was excellent and staff were really friendly. Suggest you order each variety to share rather than individual serve to enjoy most.
M. B.
One of our favourite spots for lunch when in Hobart. Please prebook as it gets really busy. The things they do with their Izakaya menu and cocktails inspired by Japan and Tasmania is stuff of legends. Only trouble is there is never enough room in your stomach to try them all even after a few visits. Generally end up overeating. Their take on the classic negroni is inspiring.

A bit disappointed after reading all of the five star reviews for Bar Wa. Oyster happy hour finished prematurely at 5:15pm because they'd run out- staff member explaining this thought it was funny (I didn't- I came here for oysters!). The food was mediocre at best (except the mushrooms) and the service came across as a bit fake. Do make a reservation if you're keen but- it was jam packed.
C. A.
We had an excellent experience here. From the street it doesn't look like much and it looks small. Little do you know but it extends all the way back, is a big restaurant and is busy at 6.30pm!! Great service. Delicious cocktails and authentic Japanese food. I'd definitely return. Be sure to book.
Favourite dishes were the gyooza, pickled vegetables and tempura oysters. The okonomiyaki and tofu weren't as good, they lacked flavour and the okonomiyaki seemed a little undercooked. Without the octopus it seemed a little lacking in flavour and texture too.
Otherwise, super impressed! Highly recommend.
D. J.
Here is a five star Japanese food dining experience, with a fully stocked bar. A reservation may be necessary as the quality of this restaurant has not gone unnoticed. If you're used to sushi bars and ordinary Japanese eateries, then visiting Bar Wa Izakaya will be a whole new experience for you. A full range of Japanese dishes is on the menu, and the quality of these dishes would be considered top shelf in Japan. The entire experience is a pleasure, from the friendly staff to the relaxing atmosphere. This is the finest restaurant I've visited on Hobart so far.
M. M.
We are glad to find this place, the food were tasty the staff are friendly.
Definitely coming back next week before we head back to WA!
Make sure to book before going as it was really busy when we went. Lucky they have available tables outside for walk-ins that night.
T. W.
Amazing experience. 10/10 food, prices, service. Had the smashed potatoes (large serving, would recommend for sharing between 2 people) and the eye fillet with uni butter and garlic chips. So good I made a reservation to come back for dinner.
j.
They were fully booked online but when we called/emailed them a few days in advance, they were still able to squeeze our group in. Ambiance and food were great except for the platter, which was a bit underwhelming. Good selection of drinks as well, but hope we could get a better description of the “Feed Me” option for large groups. It could be included in the menu maybe and could list the items included for easy reference

One of Hobart's best venues for late night food and drinks.
Always get the gyozas , roasted potatoes and tempura Mushrooms.
I definitely reccomend this place to anyone visiting or living in Hobart, friendly staff, fast service great atmosphere and just an awesome venue.
Also amazing cocktails to.
M. L.
Dining perfection and fabulous attentive service.
We tried 8 dishes and each was exceptional, fresh and super delicious.
We will definitely make this restaurant a regular when in town.
This restaurant is world class with a relaxed atmosphere and an awesome bar serving imaginative cocktails and Japanese drinks.
Highly recommended.
K. C.
This place is amazing, make sure you book. Lots of free parking on side streets as well.
We went for the happy hour (half price oysters with a drink), and the oysters were really good - give the sake tasting paddle a try. The yellow fin tuna appetiser was delicious and incredibly fresh. the okonomiyaki was probably amongst the best in Australia, and as good as most in Japan. I loved the potatoes (there is plenty of sauce, so no need to go easy). The pork jowl is very fatty but extremely tasty as was the miso butter mushrooms.
Highly recommend this place.
G. F.
We've travelled to Tokyo and live in Melbourne, so we've had our fair share of great Ramen, however, the Ramen we had from here was up there with the best ever.
The pork broth was to die for, the pork itself succulent and the other ingredients balanced it out to perfection.
We loved the side dishes and my son had the waygu and he thought it was delicious.
Thank you so much, we will be back next time we are in Hobart.
H. L.
Very awesomely arranged Japanese style izakaya bar albeit, with western dominant influence. The service was a little on the slow side due to being so busy but the staff were very nice. The kingfish belly was really nice, recommended!
P. W. P.
This restaurant was a great find it has a busy friendly atmosphere very reminiscent of restaurants in Japan and the food was excellent.
P. B.
Only managed to sneak in to grab the ramen special for lunch but it was by far the best ramen we've ever eaten. Had the pork broth which had both belly and pulled pork along with a stack of noodles and other additions; really delicious and filling.
Don't tell the chef but it also tasted great once we tipped our Yakisoba noodles (also delicious) in the last of the broth 😎
D. T.
One of the best places I've been to by far!
We were seated right in front by the bar so could see right into the kitchen. The head chef runs a tightly run ship and you can tell as the food comes out super fast. Not only that, but every single dish we tried was flavourful, balanced, and melts in your mouth.
5/5... 10/10... 2 thumbs up 👍👍
I'd say more but you really just need to come and try for yourself!
H. P. T. T.
You must try this in Hobart. The food is amazing. Never try any grilled things this good before. Super friendly staff. 5 star service!!! If have 10 star I will give 10 star🤣
K. T.
Such a gem of a place, I haven't had such fresh, great quality ramen outside of Japan! I had the pork belly ramen & it was ahhhmazing... Will be back
M. J.
Excellent Japanese food in a funky, yet relaxed vibe. The staff are amazing and the food is even better. We had a selection of share plates with a couple of cocktails and some wine - and we loved it all. The food is very tasty and the service was on point.
J. T.
Awesome food. Make sure have table booking before arrived. Ramen is highly recommended.
L. F.
Went here as it was highly rated. Made sure to book weeks in advance. Was not disappointed. The drinks list is extensive. The food options are extensive, and what's best is they are the right size to allow you to try multiple different dishes. Highly recommend.
C. G.
Friendly staff, who are knowledgeable and conversational about the menu. Delicious food. Cannot fault!
E. M.
Recommended by colleagues, and the place did not disappoint. Excellent food with an extensive authentic selection of Japanese beverages. Enjoyed my Yamazaki whisky flight which included the much sought after Yamazaki 18yo. Would return for sure!
C. S.
One of the best Japanese restaurants I've been to. The staff were amazing and full of knowledge about Sake and Umeshu. The food was top quality. The vibe and decor of the place had me wanting more. We went for a dinner setting and I couldn't recommend it more. We will be back for a ramen lunch for sure!
C. P.
Fun place to visit. Good selection of alcohol and dishes. Yum!
M. S.
Went here on boxing day with my daughter and son in law,as they had been before.
Was very nice, ordered various dishes,so we could try different ones. Was not disappointed with any. Would definitely return.
W. d. P.
A great experience. Excellent and unusual (for us) food, a very lively and happening place! Good service tops it off. Only the sake was not for us, as we are whisky people... A new favourite place!!
P. D.
We came here recently for dinner based on it's 4.7 Google reviews rating. I can see why it rated so high. This Japanese restaurant is tremendous.
Coming from Sydney where we have some brilliant Japanese restaurants we werent sure how Bar Wa Izakaya would rate by comparison. It did not disappoint in any way. So much so that even in our short stay in Hobart we went back a 2nd time as it was that good.
From the outside it doesnt say much and looks small but on the inside it is quite a large restaurant with multiple eating areas and decked out beautifully.
The food selection was superb and incredibly delicious and diverse. One dish we had was pork joule which was melt in your mouth.
Their whisky selection was solid and the whisky sour I had was one of the best I have ever tried.
If you are in Hobart and like Japanese food, do yourself a favour and go here, you wont be disappointed.
M. W.
I had the Ramen, it was amazing! Love the bar setup, very authentic Japanese atmosphere!
A. C. R.
Nice place, inside the decoration it's really creative and the food was amazing. Also friendly staff willing to help you. Another good thing it's open on Mondays.
J. B.
I would give this 4.5 stars but it doesn't allow me to. The reason why I would rate it 4.5 is because they serve the dishes when they are ready; although you could take that statement both ways. The ramen they served was the best ramen I have had for an extremely cheap price considering the outstanding quality. The platters they provided had such variety but they were all class. Overall, this is an excellent restaurant and would recommend this to everybody.
D. M.
Quite simply one of the best eating experiences I've ever had. Exquisite food and drinks. Fun and attentive staff. Great ambience. Bar Wa is not to be missed.
B. W.
Wowww this Japanese restaurant is insaaane!! Very similar flavours to authentic restaurant in Japan. Book before 6pm and you get half price oysters. The vibe is amazing. Food is superb! Would recom the bluefin sashimi is a winner. I will recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to walk away satiated with high quality Japanese food!
K. B.
Amazing food, generous and thoughtful staff, great vibe. Love, love, love. The blue fin tuna belly sashimi, the chashu pork jowl, and okonomiyaki are next level. The sake tasting flight is also an excellent idea.
J. L.
Bar Wa is a must stop if I do say so myself.
You come in and are truly immersed by the environment. Trust me when I say pictures do not do it justice.
A thing to note is that it does get quite busy in the evening, so a booking is essential for the perfect seating.
We had a dozen of the mixed oysters, okonomiyaki, sashimi with freshly grated wasabi and two cocktails.
But it didn't stop there, we were so impressed by the friendliness of staffs and cleanliness, we came back for ramen and ice cream. The house made black sesame ice cream was hands down my favourite ice cream of all time and I've been to the likes of Pipapippo, Messina and Picolina. That says a lot!!
Price wise, expect to spend an extra $ there - you're really paying for the experience here. It's one of Hobart's gem and I daresay you've wasted a trip if you do not visit this spot !!
P. N.
Best ramen in Hobart in unique setting. Love the place!
T. E.
Oh my, easily the best dinner spot I've been to in Hobart. They have recreated a Japanese restaurant to a tee and I didn't want the food to end. I would recommend the oysters, blue fin sashimi, smashed pink eye potatoes, collard greens, chashu and agodashi tofu. If I lived in Hobart, this would be a regular for me.
K. M.
Lovely feed - super friendly wait staff and wonderful atmosphere. Food is a bit over the top flavour wise, but delicious all the same. Absolute stand outs are the yakiniku platter, and the Dunalley smashed pinkeyes. Well worth a trip
A. T.
One of our restaurant reservations fell through on a recent trip tp Hobart and we were recommended Bar Wa by Moss hotel. We were on a waiting list and ended up being squeezed it. Lucky we did, as it was awesome!
The drinks were great (highly recommend the whisky highball, plus a great range of imported Japanese beers) and the karaage was really authentic (and oishii!)
A great vibe overall and the staff were lovely, despite it being packed. The front bar was pretty loud, so ask for a table out the back if you're a bit noise conscious. 10/10 would recommend and return.
N. C.
Really popular place, highly recommend getting a reservation - I got a sit outside in the winter because I had none. It’s a “tapas-style” japanese restaurant. Food is amazing and service as well.
j.
Delicious food and drinks, cozy atmosphere, important to book in advance. Very attentive staff as well, thanks for a great dinner!
E. C.
Groovy little gastropub in Hobart with extensive selection of authentic japanese food and drinks. If there’s an izakaya like this in the city I live in, I would keep coming back to chill and dine with friends. 👌🏻
H. H.
The food was, as always, just wonderful. The miso butter mushrooms especially! The beer selection is possibly the best in Hobart, one of the very few places carrying all my favourites, eg Hitachino nest red rice ale
M. F.
First time here tonight and absolutely loved it! Great atmosphere, awesome food, really good service and nice set up! Great for a small gathering or large group. Clean toilets too! Prices were middle range so if you want a big feed expect to spend a bit but so worth it! The cocktails I had were both lovely too! Thanks for a good night guys!
L. P.
Awsome Japanese inspired food, best I've had since visiting japan!
Food exceeded expectations, staff were friendly and we had a great night!
There is a great selection of imported beer including beers I haven't seen outside of japan and craft beers I never knew existed... but I've removed a star because the price of these beers is ridiculously high!!
The price of food here is reasonable but the beer is too expensive, I will definitely be returning for another feed though 😁
H. Y.
One of the best bar in hobart. This place has really good quality food and various options of drinks. They have 2nd floor as well. Many table than it looks like at the front. 2 bars. Good toilet. COVID 19 hand sanitiser is ready at the front door.
W. L.
Highly recommended if you’re craving for Japanese in Hobart. Delicious food and great service. Love the podcast in the loos as well
S. C.
I loved the ambience and vibe of the place. The overall experience is exemplary. Staff is very attentive and professional.
Place is booked out for most nights, hard to get a reservation, so make sure to book well in advance.
We ordered a few starters kingfish, trout and scallop sashimi. They were fresh and inviting with good wasabi.
Also had charcoal sake, paired very well with the food.
Ordered Chicken Ramen for mains, Good ramen, I would not Categorise them as exceptional. Flavours are good but the depth of the soup is compensated by a little over the top Miso.
Desert was Miso ice-cream with Yuzu crumbs and caramel. Yuzu crumbs lacked a bit taste, But Nice overall dessert.
B. R.
Highly recommended if you're a remote fan of Japanese, especially Ramen. Had to be the best Ramen we've had, together with delicious smaller share plates. Cool ambience & super friendly staff made the experience even better!
P. v. e.
Great vibe, great food, great staff, you get what you pay for this place doesn't disappoint!🥳❤
D. W.
Wow this little place was amazing!! The food wonderful staff great, they even provided wheelchair ramps . Our only issue was they reminded us 5 times that we only had a 2 hr sitting. Our sitting was from 5-7 and at 6.30 while we were finishing our drinks they reminded us again that our sitting was only 2hrs, which we realised after being told 4 times already. That was the only disappointing thing about our experience. Perhaps just let people know when you seat them then let them enjoy their meal.
N. M.
Amazing food and ambience!
No wonder it is always busy!
The wagyu tataki and mushroom tempura were so good and the white miso ice cream was delicious😋
A must visit in Hobart.
P. H.
Definitely worth the visit. Food was amazing and great to share. We shared 5 dishes between 2 and was more than enough. I would go back again just for the Wagyu.
Great selection of drinks and their cocktails are sensational with the Japanese fusion. Sake flight was such a good intro to the drink.
Staff friendly and knowledgeable about the menu
Would highly recommend.
V. S.
One of the tastiest ramens we have ever had!
W. T.
My go to. Bar Wa Izakaya is my first stop whenever I’m in Hobart. Their food is incredible, the drinks list is like a novel and their staff are always amazing. Thanks for just being awesome!
R. M. W.
Perhaps it wasn't what I expected after tasting and comparing ramen from the main land (Melbourne). Overall, the char siu is not well-shaped,. In addition, the soup contains black garlic oil and bok choy. It was a small portion, and the flavour wasn't as strong as typical "Tonkotsu Ramen."
T. S. (. N. H. S.
Was extremely skeptical going to this place, but was absolutely surprised. Highly recommend the feed me menu. Extremely tasty food, and fantastic cocktails.
T. D.
Bar wa is undeniably the best Japanese in the city of Hobart. Book in early, because every one else knows this and demand is high. Get. In. Early. Don't. Delay.
Their staff are engaged, knowledgeable, humorous, and willing to assist. A $15 raise would be too little. I highly recommend you rock up, order more food than is reasonable, and tell the staff they deserve a raise. It'll make your night, and their night.
C.
I prebooked a reservation before landing in Hobart based on popularity and reviews from Google. Upon arrival we we're immediately seated and the vibe was lively for a work night. Drinks were great. Dinner - even better. Thanks to our waiter for making us feel welcome. (Forgot his name, he had a manbun and recently moved back from Sydney)
B. B. R.
Bar Wa delivers a unique setting with wonderful staff.
The food was the most interesting and flavorsome Japanese cuisine I have had in Tassie.
Japanese beer pleased the palate of many on our party.
The banquet was both generous and delightfully varied with many textures and flavours.
Delicious.
K. A.
What an Izakaya experience. Ended up ordering a second Yakisoba just for myself. Karage was great too. And the Pink Eye potatoes were nice and crispy.
w. L.
Five stars for service! ..but only three for food. Definitely don't show up hoping for anything authentic. This is a western run restaurant and you can taste it in every bite.
The gyozas with ponzu were a bit pungent, very un-japanese and difficult to finish. The karaage chicken pieces were cut way too big and seemed to have standard roast chicken under more salty coating. The "tempura mushroom" was caked with thick fish n chips style batter. The tataki tasted like salami. Best mentions were the oysters and sashimi, but those may have tasted good anywhere.
However, the service was stellar! Our waitresses were lovely and the sake pour was very generous. The plates and ambience were all beautiful. I only wish I had more to observe before booking so I could have set my expectations appropriately. Overall, a nice night overall. I don't think we will return.
S. P.
Good food but it really needs to improve on the service provided. We were a group of 6 and were crammed into a table for 4 despite making a very early booking. The booths for larger groups were empty the whole time that we dined. One of the ladies who served us was quite unpleasant and sort of just dumped the food on the table each time a dish was served. Won’t be in a rush to dine here again.
M. K.
Great Japanese food... wonderful to share amongst friends and family. Great service and atmosphere. Will go back again.
a. o.
Went here for lunch yesterday and it was great! Really beautiful interior design and the staff were very accomodating to my coeliac dietary requirements. Sashimi portion sizes could be bigger: would definitely come back!
S. L.
Great atmosphere, good food & drinks. Super popular, must book table ahead.
N. C.
Great restaurant! Food was amazing, staff were friendly and helpful. Make a booking, it's a busy place!
Y. L.
A very tasteful place, with a sense of Japanese Cyberpunk, the food are fresh and tasty.
A. L.
Amazing spot. Food and drinks are always incredible. The rich and moreish ramen for lunch through to a full smorgasbord for dinner, you won't be disappointed. The side of potato's and the karagé chicken are a simple highlight. Staff are always friendly too and the chefs there are pretty much culinary gods🙏
J. L.
My first time here, foods were great, drink a bit complicated for me
R. m. (.
This place is an amazing experience to go to the food was very different and the approach they take on sharing food is really cool it is a little bit expensive but 100% worth it and the staff are so nice
I. U.
Lovely atmosphere and beautiful Japanese food. Pretty busy all week through. Need to book
r.
great spot for lunch! ramen and matchatini were delicious :-)
p. l. w.
Awesome place .... happy hour for oysters. Very welcoming staff and great service. All reasonably priced but the atmosphere made up for any short comings. We will be going back soon.
P. o. P.
Great share plates, interesting food, creative twist on Japanese favourites, chilled place. Friendly service. Our first meal in Hobart. The bar has been set high...
P. L.
After a rough few years, in which many independent restaurants struggled, it's really great to see the folks back at it at strength.
A. R.
Ordered edamame, rice, agedashi tofu and shiro miso braised mushrooms. The mushroom was by far one of the most awesome dish I’ve ever had and cannot recommend this enough!
D. C.
Will definitely be back. Lots of plates to share with our friends and nice wine and cocktails plus japanese beer options.
P. H.
Funky with personality. We did lunch on our last day in town. I am glad we did. It has nice people offering great service. It was our first time and the menu and drinks were explained with good detail. The drinks list needs more than one sitting! The food was wonderful and size perfect. My only regret is that I would have loved to stay longer, unfortunately business called.
Thank you team Bar Wa Izakaya, you can rest assured that when we are back later in the year we will be in for a long lunch.
t. -.
Very delicious food, excellent service, and cool ambience! Love this place!
J. S.
Amazing food and drinks in a cute Japanese themed bar. We had a large group and shared a bunch of plates, each of which was more delicious than the next. Staff were friendly and attentive
D. W.
This quirky two storey building has a cool vibe and great food. The bar is well worth a visit on its own and the whisky 🥃 collection is now pretty good for your Japanese tastebuds
A. R.
Fantastic food and good selection of drinks. The kitchen is open until 11pm so you can spread out your orders. Fairly quick service. The place does get busy and if you are seated at the bar you might find yourself surrounded by people trying to pay their bill as you are eating your food. Overall great Japanese place in Hobart.
L. J.
Brilliant service and food. Great drink selection. Portions were generous (maybe too generous as we wanted to try more dishes) great atmosphere
B. T.
This food was incredible. Portions could of been bigger. Service was fantastic thanks

Passby the restaurant and had a good vibes on this restaurant
We had order ramen( which stop serving at 3pm)/taste good !
Highball and karaage chicken at Sunday happy hour $7/$3
Not only serve good food and drinks
The staff is very polite as well
Bruce the best staff
R. B.
Had a wonderful lunch, staff were great and wide range of drinks available.
S. H.
Sugoi sugoi !!! This place was sooo cool. The interior made for a unique dining experience and the tapas allowed guests to try a variety of delicious Japanese flavours.
I ordered a Japanese plum wine flight along with sashimi, karage chicken, okonomiyaki, gyouza, grilled meats and edamame beans. Everything was 10/10.
During the day they serve ramen which I am excited to try in the future.
S. E.
Great food and good selection at the bar including a variety of Japanese sakes and whiskeys. One of the better ramen places in Hobart.
f. d.
Good food and good choices of drinks. Good vibes for family and friend who enjoy couple of drinks over food.
P. v. M.
So good. I don't normally like soup but I love their lunchtime Ramen's. Bar Wa is my favourite restaurant in Hobart. I have never had a bad meal here.
G. C.
This is one of the best Japanese restaurants we've been to. Food was exceptional in a great atmosphere. We loved it so much we revisited on the last night of our holiday and will definitely go back next visit to Hobart
S. H.
My partner and I came across this awesome little place whilst in Hobart and were sooo impressed by the service (staff were super helpful and friendly), the drinks and food was on point and the fit out of the venue was amazing too!
V. S.
I just love this place! I am always happy with the great service and fantastic food! One of my top 10 places to eat in Hobart.
A. T.
Amazing bar atmosphere for sure.
For Ramen - incredibly mediocre.
Plenty of high quality toppings (thiccc slab of charsiu). Beautifully presented. Broth seemed light and not very rich from what I have come to expect from Tonkotsu.
Could someone also explain what tasted like charcoal grit in the ramen/tare?
Rocked up with no booking and waiting 45 mins for food. So plan accordingly.
S. W.
Bar Wa is a wonderful experience from start to finish. Friendly service, delicious meals, tasty cocktails and a great atmosphere make it an absolute must for anyone looking for a feed in Hobart. Try it. You will not be disappointed.
F. A.
Amazing decor, atmosphere A+. Service. Impeccable. Food. Had a great tofu dish and okanomiyaki
Đ. L.
Amazing food. Food is a bit pricey. Lovely staffs. Oysters are a must to try. Delicious and mouth-watering. There is a happy hour you should come for half price. Cool vibe club inside the house. Great place for hanging out with friends.
C. L.
Nice bar and interior. But very disappointed with dish. Freaking oily ramen soup and salty wagyu.
H. M. N.
Good place for hanging out with friends and family. Good price; however, the amount of food is quite small.
R. L.
Amazing atmosphere and delicious food. Little pricey but you get what you pay for. Great staff as well!
A. L.
Amazing vibe, great service and even better food. A great place to experience the best of Japanese food and culture. Menu items are great for sharing and drinks are highly enjoyable too. Super impressed with the little touches everywhere (including the well-equipped bathroom with Japanese facilities) that really reminded me of being back in Japan. Visited twice while on holidays here and would definitely be back next time my partner and I are in Tassie.
B. S.
From that decor to the flavorful food to the friendly staff. Bar Wa Izakaya is one of the best restaurants in Hobart and worth going out of your way to visit.
A. S.
Woah... If you eat anywhere in Hobart. Make sure it's here!! Such beautiful flavours. So many unique dishes to try. And epic Sake menu if that's your Thang!
Be sure to make a booking as I was lucky to get a walk in seat when I went. I highly recommend going for the oyster happy hour from 4-6pm 💪✌️
J. K. K.
Food is amazing. Price is very reasonable. Staff are very good. This is becoming a favourite lunch place for us.
N. 6.
Delicious 😊 Can understand why everyone raves about this place. A Queenslander recommend it. Food is OMG
L. “.
Dark MoFo special, half price oysters from 4-6pm! Great sake selection and really innovative menu. Warm and friendly service and the food is really good too. Can’t go wrong
S. K.
Great food, vibe and service
Z. G.
Lovely food, good atmosphere. The service staff could have been a little friendlier, kind of a I'm too hip to serve you vibe from our waitress. May have been a bad afternoon for her, if service was good would have been a five star. I highly recommend the pork jowl and the three flavour oyster. Plus 4-6 half price oyster happy hour was great.
B. R.
Just wow!
The tuna sashimi and the pork jowl were mind blowing!
Highly recommend!

I’ve just decided I want to come here every single day when I stay in Hobart.
Wonderful fresh oysters with beer gave me a Awesome experience and I can’t wait to try all their other dishes.
c. h.
Amazing all dishes have beautiful flavour &delicate taste ,friendly staff ,clean restaurant
R. C.
Staff are very impressive, recommend the banquet, very accommodating for people who have food allergies, in on their banquet. Highly recommend.
M. K.
Very friendly staff. Tasty food! My 3 visit so far!
S. H.
Excellent food. So good we had to come back the next day. We had ramen and various other foods.
L. B.
I really like the food, especially the friend rice dish with mayo, but often it's not on the menu! It's the first thing I look for as soon as I have the menu in my hot little hands. The gyozas are the best I've ever had and the Scottsdale braised pork, heaven.
The only complaint I have is that it can take almost 10 minutes to get a drink. I am not quite sure why it can take so long to pour a glass of wine but I m going to try to sit closer to the bar next time!
P. P.
Wonderful atmosphere with great food. You migh have to order 4-5 small dishes for 2 persons. Parking is easy in the next street.
D. J.
Amazing food, lovely staff and laid back atmosphere. Wish I could come here often!
A. M.
The food was delicious!!! Best I’ve had in a long time. Service was great and staff were friendly.
E. B.
The food here was delicious, however I ordered a fair bit from the menu and still left hungry.
M. P.
Very cool Japanese bar. The food is very tasty and the vibe is authentic, especially because it has a Japanese smart toilet, what a pleasure to use. Keen to try the lunch ramen.
S.
Funky Japanese fusion cuisine. Relatively inexpensive but the flavors of the dishes, decor will blow your mind. Has a good selection of drinks at the bar also.
M. B.
Absolutely amazing food with a great relaxing atmosphere. Wait staff all lovely, professional and very pleasant to deal with.
The chefs in the kitchen have sure put there knowledge and research into the food they're serving. Every ingredient with each dish matched so perfectly. Could not fault it at all. 8 share dishes and a lovely bottle of red went down extremely well and we will certainly be back!
So if you like Japanese cuisine at a very reasonable price then this is the place to go, you will not be disappointed.
Well done all to all the crew at Bar Wa Izakaya, the food, drink and environment is all sensational!
K. B.
Very good and authentic Japanese. Large drink menu with imported beers, sake and whiskey. Highly recommended.
M. ..
So tasty and staff is friendly. I love that Fish Nanban (salmon ) !!
L. P.
Great authentic Japanese food and variety of drinks. Booking is recommended as it is very popular among locals.
C. P.
Hidden gem! Really funky place with very tasty food! A great place to try some unique Japanese experiences like sparking jelly sake and udon pancakes. You can also multi-task by learning Japanese whilst using the heated toilet seats that spray your ‘parts’ clean! Love, love, love this place! But you have to book to ensure you get a seat!
P. B.
Great food and drinks with the very cozy abient. Best combo!
a. d. l.
Great food and lovely decor, service was a bit slow but the drinks were delicious ! Loved the spicy vegetarian ramen option
L. D.
Great food and atmosphere here. Can't comment on how authentic the food is, but I can say it's always delicious.
Expect to pay a little more for what you get.
I grabbed Karaage chicken and the pink eye potatoes on my last visit. Both were delicious. Add some rice and a drink to make it a little more filling.
N.
Great atmosphere, yummy cocktails and service was good. Not many gluten free options
H. N.
Beautiful decorations. I loved the cocktails here. Food was decent.
S. H.
Amazing drinks and even better food! We're only in Hobart for a couple days but you can bet we will be here for lunch and dinner everyday that's left!
M. O.
Great food, lots of variety and good value. Lively atmosphere and cold beer.
T. F.
Good food , unique than other bar food , goes very well with beer, good vibe. Recommend.
S. J.
Stumbled upon this restaurant after googling craft beer. Wow what a find. Great place, lovely staff and amazing food. Really tasty and great beers, sake and whisky flights. So glad we found it.
I.
Decent Japanese cuisine and some mean cocktails!
Great place for a casual dinner with friends.. great vibe and excellent staff.
It gets a bit crowded and noisy but otherwise good.
People with mobility issues may find it challenging to negotiate the high stools
Cash and cards
a. j.
Funky venue with a great tapas style avant Japanese menu.
C. M.
5 stars for the amazing food, definitely did not disappoint! Could not fault a single dish but also can't pick a favourite either because they were all so delicious. Great drinks menu as well.
The staff were friendly and great but did kind of forget us sometimes other than that everything was great.
G. D.
Eye fillet steak, pork belly skewers, pan seared green beans, tempura mushrooms and surely the sake was good. A set back was the Agedashi Tofu sauce was salty and not up to par. The staff customer service was good.
j. D.
This was just awesome, the food could not be faulted and the pork jowl was to die for. Followed by Yellowtail Kingfish belly sashimi. We needed wheelchair acess and this was accomadated. Staff were exceptional, and it was quite busy. Flat acess a great night.
N. B.
Best Japanese tapas I ever had. Try the dumplings, spinach and Sashimi - you won't be disappointed!!!! The staff is lovely as well and tries to make your experience one of a kind. Will definitely come back, anytime!
N. R.
Wow just arrived from Melbourne and randomly walked into this beautiful experience. A must visit, oysters are to die for.
M. T.
Awesome Japanese restaurant in Hobart. We tried several Japanese craft beers and the selection was amazing. They also had a very extensive whiskey selection. There's also an awesome happy hour with half priced oysters from 4-6pm. The menu also has a great selection of bites to share. Everything we had was delicious.
N. B.
Was honestly let down and disappointed, just arrived in Hobart and was craving fresh Japanese seafood. We ordered the various share platters and was disappointed with the lack of Japanese authenticity. The meals were very expensive and would not recommend. Lovely staff however.
S. P.
Great food and service. Cocktails are good and a nice range of sake
D. R. O.
Great staff and very yummi food.
I could not believe that I got a Gluten free Japanese beer!!!
That was an awesome experience to go there!
It is also a good option in Hobart, especially because the opening hours is until late.
D. W.
No wonder this place is as popular as it is. Great food (excellent range of dishes), great atmosphere and fast, friendly service.
D. M.
Excellent as expected from the other reviews. Service was top quality, food very creative and different to many other Japanese restaurants in Aus and cocktails were sound. Would recommend, would return. Thank you
S. E.
Great to dine at, food tasted fresh & nice, interesting décor & ambience.
D. G.
Oh my god!! The food, service, ambiance and overall excellence is incredible. The staff were amazing especially Ellis and Nana who’s attention to detail was second to none. If you don’t dine here then you’ve missed out on the best Japanese experience this side of Osaka. Five stars all the way
M.
Udon pancakes are to die for, great cocktails and friendly service too, THANK YOU!! The vibe is right
E.
Absolutely amazing place, great food, great service, great staff, totally recommend to anyone got a bunch of diffrent styled foods so your bond to find a dish you like. Recommend the $50 banquet. The chicken and pork belly were definitely my favourite. Nice scenery, delicious drinks. Definitely communf back!
M. R.
Beautiful and surprising food with very attentive and informative staff. A great experience.
S. H.
Incredible food but the highlight for me had to be the Yuzu lemonade! So good!
M. W.
I was looking for some Japanese food while in Tasmania, went to this place and was not disappointed. Great food with authentic Japanese flavours. It reminded me of the bars I went to in Japan. Lovely people and great service. Many sakes & other drinks to choose from. Definitely recommend the yakiniku platter, super!
M. W.
Absolutely delicious food. Great, friendly and welcoming service.
S. S.
Amazing Ramen and drinks, lovely staff and great environment! Highly recommend!
S. K.
Such attention to detail! Our group feasted like kings and the bartender was really good. I asked for recommendations and the bartender carefully considered every dish I had consumed as well as cocktails I’d already consumed and made very well informed suggestions to enhance my meal!
D. D.
Such a amazing bar. The foods here are so yummy and well-decorated. The drink is also very good. They are really fancy. The staff are so nice and friendly. I have visited here with my family and friends for many time. I am always satisfied about everything in the Bar Wa Izalaya. Highly recommend here as the best Japanese restaurant in Hobart.
A. L.
Good vibe to have drink here
A. G.
Outstanding food and service! Loved it here - great atmosphere and great night overall. They’ve even got a special menu for dietary requirements. The staff were so lovely and attentive and the food was delicious, agedashi tofu was the best and the tempura mushrooms!
J. W.
Atmosphere, food, drinks.
Service, not so much; but then again - it was a busy night - and we had finished a week of fine dining and degustations.
Four stars.
M. M.
I can not stress enough how important it is for everyone who is in Hobart to visit this restaurant. I have to say it was the highlight of my whole holiday in Tasmania.
From the decor, to the waiters and service to the mouth watering delectable food. OMG!! Incredible!!. We ordered the ramen special of the day and the pork ramen. From the moment our plates got placed in front of us, I started salivating. The broth was creamy, semi-oily, and full of flavor. Once you lifted the noodles they got coated with the delicious broth. Just perfection!. The gyoza were also cooked perfectly. I highly recommend doing the whiskey tasting through the ages in was very interesting tasting the maturity of the flavors of each whiskey.
J. J.
My friend and I were visiting Hobart for the Christmas weekend, we arrived on a extremely busy night with a long wait for tables. We eventually got one and were happy with the food, atmosphere and service; special shout-out to Mim who served us that night - she gave wonderful recommendations and was extremely helpful while we waited for a table. I'll definitely come back next time I'm in town.
T. H.
Good enciront japan resto, all of the food our order are delicious
C. M.
Awesome food , great atmosphere. Staff very helpful with the food allergy on our table.
A. G.
Well priced innovative and delicious food with good service - this place is epic!
S. H.
AMAZING.
Cannot fault the drinks, food or service.
Very reasonably priced, too.
S. N.
Friendly staff and fresh food.
Staff was helpful and knowledgeable about their food and drinks menu. Always friendly services. Seafood was great and fresh. Nothing to fault about.
Will absolutely return when we get a chance to.
M. O.
Came here with a dozen friends for dinner. We opted for the banquet and I was glad we did. It was a sampler of pretty much everything on the menu and very enjoyable. The "taster" plates just kept coming and by the end I had run out of room, but bravely kept eating😊
A couple of things stopped me giving a five star review. It was LOUD inside. Conversation had to be carried out an elevated volume and that volume had to increase as the place filled. I had talked myself hoarse by the end of the night. Probably OK for a bar, but a little much for a Restaurant.
The other reason was that service was a little slow. It was a long wait between tasters to begin with and then got closer and closer at the end. Probably should have been the other way around to give us a chance to make room for the last portions.
In truth I'm probably getting old and grumpy and most people wouldn't have noticed my . It was a very good night.
V. L.
The potatoes were crispy, and crunchy 🔥
Plus the aioli sauce was the BOMB.
Fast and friendly service!
The steak was perfectly cooked.
The gyoza are always a crowd pleaser, cannot fault the food! 😍😍😍
J. Y.
I’ve been to Bar-wa few times already and again they always served the best food!
During lunch time they have ramen!
Things you must try in here:
- Set of 3 whiskey
- Pork cheek
- Karage chicken
- Kikusui Junmai Ginjo Sake is very smooth, delightful and so warm in your throat.
- Chicken skewers so yummm
- Wagyu beef (Sure will come back for this dish)
- Okonomiyaki
J. B.
My partner and I were super excited as had heard great things. We made a booking online and upon our arrival there weren't many people approx 4 tables and 2 floor staff. We got straight next to another table of guests when we could have been separated as plenty of space.. Would have been nice to sit further given Covid and wouldn't have been a issue as plenty tables free.
We had to wait over 20minutes before we had someone come over to take our order of food to find the server was quite bad.
Whilst the food was great the service was poor and not up to scratch so won't be visiting again.
P. L.
I was in town for a conference and the place we had our after-party is right next door. I saw a sign saying half price oysters from 4 to 6pm and we had a bit of spare time so off we went.
Even though we came quite early (5ish), the restaurant was really busy and fully booked. We managed to get some seats outside and ordered some oysters. We got half a dozen of the natural and half a dozen of the Sanbaizu oysters. The oysters were really fresh and yummy, and the 3 flavor dressing of the Sanbaizu one was amazing! I highly recommend ordering the Sanbaizu oysters.
My coworker ordered the karaage and said it was really good too.
The staff was friendly and was very accommodating when we requested for bill splitting.
Overall, highly recommend this place!
g. c.
Greatest food and service ! Incredible spot. Couldn’t rate this highly enough.
B. J.
This place is a must do if you’re in Hobart! The atmosphere is relaxed but the staff are quick on there feet and they handle the crazy amount of customers so well.
The range of dishes is well suited to a variety of tastes. We loved everything but the chicken yakitori was the standout! The drinks menu is huge and we loved trying different cocktails.
Black sesame ice cream topped it all off too!
M. L.
Flawless. Great food, brilliant drink selection and friendly staff.
N. F.
My family and I absolutely loved this place. It has a great vibe, excellent service (quick, friendly and helpful), interesting drinks (I LOVED the umeshi tasting flight) and super-tasty Japanese food (the pork gyoza and yakniku platter were absolute standouts for me, but everything else was excellent too).
O. F.
The food here was amazing. The first time we attended we did the banquet but did not order that type again as the half hour wait between each meal was far too long. This time we ordered everything at once and thankfully the food was bought out with good timing in between. We ordered the shiro miso braised mushrooms, chasu scottsdale pork jowl, tumpura mushrooms, gyoza, okonomiyaki, Tasmanian pink eye wedges, to name a few. Everything was delicious and beautiful.
I would have given 5 stars, however have not as the service could be better. We were a table of 7 and sat on a high table with bar stools so space was limited given the drinks on the table. We had to keep asking staff constantly walking past, to please clear the dirty dishes to make room. More money can be made on alcohol sales too if drinks were regularly monitored better.
J. T.
Half price oysters happy hour! 4-6 pm well worth the trip!. Fill up on oysters for about $5 for 3 standard size. Food is well cooked and ambience is good. they have 2 floors able to cater for larger group on the second floor. The yakisoba and pork jowl are large size and rice decent serving. Other dishes are well cooked however smaller that expected. Quality of the food is great. Being a bar ther is as expected a large range of japanese alcoholic beverages. Overall very happy with the meal. and had a good night out.
S. M.
Awesome Japanese restaurant with the greatest range of Japanese beers and whiskeys. Our group loved trying all the different meals and got many plates to share. We are so glad we made the 2 1/2 hour journey there. Will definitely be back for more!
J. N.
Have had Ramen all over Australia, east coast to west. Hands down the absolute best Ramen you will have. The broth is rich, the pork belly is tender, everything in this bowl belongs. Has genuinely ruined all other ramens for me... which would be okay except for the fact I don't live in Tasmania! If you're in Hobart and love Ramen, do not miss this place.
G. H.
The Chefs table was very enjoyable. Great flavours blended well and plenty of food at a reasonable price. Well done guys
D. A.
Had I work function here. We all loved it. Great food. Great atmosphere. Great service. I've since taken my wife and kids back. It quickly became a family favorite
J. W.
Delicious ramen, as long as you go at lunch.
Slurp levels unfathomable
T. M.
This place has a great vibe! The staff are all so lovely and helpful, great food and drinks - it’s a small plates where everyone can share kinda place. Definitely try the sake/umeshu/whiskey/gin flights - they are amazing!
J. L.
Great atmosphere but a few missteps in the food, e.g. tempura mushrooms wasn't cooked with tempura batter, sesame oil drizzled in the sashimi ruined the kingfish for us, and the pan-seared wagyu sirloin was too sweet for our liking. Pork rinds and udon pancake were delicious.
C. P.
Food is unbelievable, this is a transcendent dining experience you will not forget. The staff are amazing and friendly. They also only play certified bangers.
Order the whole menu, you will not regret.
K. K. N.
Service wasn't fast but staff was very friendly. We ordered pork belly, Japanese rice and stir fried udon. They were sort of fusion and didn't seem Japanese to us (given that we are Asians). Rice was still nice anyway. Pork belly was good, but the udon was too salty. The place was also too noisy so we didn't feel comfortable sitting there for long. Still worth a try, but not a place we would like to visit often.
G. N.
Delicious food and friendly service. We went for dinner and ordered 4 dishes between us; the miso oysters, tempura mushrooms, the Tori Kara Age and the pork gyoza. It came to $35 each, not including drinks - and I was very, very happy! The food was fresh and well cooked - a variety of exciting flavours and textures, all nicely presented. I would have loved to see more fish on the menu - I miss Melbourne’s sashimi platters. Otherwise, the food is well-priced and of decent size, and I enjoyed the restaurant atmosphere.
I would recommend the flight of sake and the cocktails (although they’re a little pricey) as well. I will definitely be back!
B. G.
Went for a dinner and it was fully packed. I think they were probably too busy and missed out 2 of our orders. The owner was apologetic and even gave us a complimentary dish. Good service overall and great service recovery, will be back again for sure
T. H.
The food is delicious, reasonably priced and the service was pretty good.
J. A.
This is a review based entirely on the experience of the service organising a surprise for a freind. I did not eat there but I am told it was amazing. After hearing some last minute news from a freind , I wanted to organise a celebratory bottle of champagne on arrival for my friend visiting town. Richard ( I believe the owner) was more than willing to help. The place sounded pumping but not once did he say it wasn't possible to do anything. He excelled in customer service. He was incredibly helpful and willing to make this a special occasion. This is they type of hospitality that creates a top quality joint, and what Tasmania is known for! I will be visiting myself when I can take time away from my own restaurant. Thanks so much to Richard and his team for this last minute request!
G. P.
Excellent! Best Japanese food we've had outside of Japan. All the best options on the menu and a relatively short wait. They are small menu options ideal for sharing and they are brought out several at a time so it doesn't feel like a long wait for food. Highly recommend the wagyu beef tartare and the fried chicken, as well as the green beens and broccolini
S. S.
Love it here. Food was delicious as usual.
M. D.
Great food, helpful staff (with an upstairs lounge where we grabbed a drink to wait for a table to pop up!), and good vibes. Cocktails were delicious too!
T. A. F. C.
Bar Wa is deluxe, lets just get that out of the way. It ticks all the boxes and some.
Not only does it do a damn good job of keeping things authentically Japanese, Bar Wa is also edgy and cool. Want to learn some Japanese phrases? One trip to the bathroom is all you need.
I went specifically to try the ramen. Not only had I seen all the advertising on Facebook, I've also over heard a few people talk about how good it was so count me in I said. Bloody oath, what a bowl of deliciousness! I'm all for stuffing myself but holy underpants, you simply can not get enough. 11/10 would food coma again.
The tempura mushrooms were on point and my pint of Sapporo served in a super chilled glass was just what this Sunday sesh enthusiast needed and with the customer service skill level being well through the roof, you can just chill out from your hectic schedule.
Look, I'm not going sugar coat it.. this isn't my first rodeo at this lovely establishment and it won't be my last. Bring your date, bring your family, bring the whole work office (they have a nifty upstairs room dedicated to functions) and have a friggen good time! You won't be disappointed.
K. S.
Delish food, nicely presented, good service and interesting interior with comfortable chairs (we sat at a table) . There was a very large group sharing the long table, however, so it was pretty noisy - lots of hard surfaces so nothing to dampen the sound.
R. G.
One of the best nights out I've had. Great bar, great food
F. R. (.
Absolutely amazing food. Definitely recommend this place. Make sure you book in advance as its quite busy. We hadn't booked ahead and had to wait a bit before a table could be available but it was well worth the wait. The staff are very friendly and explained everything very well! We will definitely be back!
D. K.
Yummy small dishes and great selection of japanese alcohol
A. N.
Nice plum wine and tasty black sesame icecream
J. C.
Attended the restaurant in the hopes of getting a Ramen. I guess we were under the impression ramen would be served at dinner service due to the main photo of the restaurant advertising ramen. Anyway, no Ramen. The first waitress that served us was not polite and didn't seem too interested in us. We ordered the food, it was ok. The joint was way too busy for a Monday, it felt like the restaurant was more catered to people who like to drink.
A. S.
The ramen is amazing and is one of the best I’ve tasted.
K. T.
Great find! The oysters were impressive my partner had three dozen, happy hour 1/2 price amazing food ,great Japanese range of whiskey,so many delicious temptations to eat
Stayed a few hours grazing and getting spoilt by the wonderful service and friendly staff
See you all in six months
Thanks
c. c.
Great food, freindly and obliging staff. It has a nice ambience. A very extensive beverage list consisting of mainly Japanese alcoholic bevvies. "I'll be back!"
A. T.
Great izakaya food which is reasonably priced!Japanese whisky selection is pretty good as well.. if you’re wallet is deep enough!
T. T.
Popped in for a nightcap on a Tuesday night. Excellent service and great selection of Japanese everything.
R. “. T.
The food was great, great atmosphere and good drinks
A. C.
Great food, the cocktails are very tasty, and the staff really friendly. Is better to book in advance, as it can be very crowded over the weekend.
D. S.
Good vibes, tasty sashimi and great cocktails.
M. Z.
Amazing food and great service! Perfect for sharing plates so you get to try heaps of plates.
Awesome drinks menu with Umeshu menu & some great cocktails which I loved.
Tempura Mushrooms & Umeshu tasting plate were my favourite pics.
A.
Great cocktail selection, and delicious ramen.
D. N.
Overall good dining experience with the family.
R. N.
Some of the very best Japanese food outside of Japan! I am a repeat customer and haven't found fault once. Great food, great atmosphere
G. K.
First time in Tassie and going this little gem close by. Went upstairs for seating and it was just right for good chats. Had excellent food and excellent drinks!! I can't recommend just one but I ordered a high ball and old fashioned, then chicken karaage and chashu pork jowl and you'll need a bowl of rice. Go for the asparagus also! Oh and the top quality oysters we ordered twice. Thanks Kim for coming upstairs to serve us :D leg day game is strong.
S. B.
Lovely small plates and great drinks menus. Perfect for a drinks and share plates.
M. R.
Fantastic food, service was friendly and quick. Will definitely be going back next time I'm looking for lunch near the city
N. D.
Amazing service. They have an extremely wonderful team. The restaurant is clean, beautiful and has beautiful artwork. Food is outstanding! I’m completely addicted!
T. S.
Great meal and vibe
L. H.
It has really good food I would definitely go back there they had really good sushimi and the fish in the dish was kingfish and ocean trout they were also a really cool place to hang out at with all the modern decorations.
F. J.
I have been flying in and out of Hobart but never tried Bar Wa since last year. The oysters were a delicacy and you pay half the price from 4-6 pm. Tuna belly tare tare is a wonderful dish that compliments the different flavours of oysters. The presentation is terrific and and the service is lovely.
D. C.
Group friends ordered and shared plates of food delicious great value.
A. L.
- great food and great choice of Japanese drinks.
- great vegetarian food although could have more options.
- atmosphere is cosy and casual with friendly staff.
- music not too loud so able to have a good conversation.
- must book to get a seat as they get busy quite quickly.
- food could be a little cheaper considering that they are made to share and portion sizes are smaller.
N. C.
Wow, oysters are fresh and service was great too. Well worth a visit.
A. R.
Not a bad ramen, not the best in town, but ok. Oysters were fresh. The environment is really nice and the staff are lovely. Will come back to try other things
l. d.
I enjoyed the mushroom with shiro miso ,unfortunately we couldn't try the famous ramen it wasn't available, but what we ordered it was great to eat.
c. h.
I really enjoy this restaurant, friendly staff and delicious food. I also love the atmosphere and decor. I always get the okonomiyaki dish and it never fails to impress. Reservations are always helpful though, especially during peak hour. And expect the food to have a long wait time for food (of course, it depends on what you order though) so my friend and I are sure to arrive half an hour earlier than when we want to eat. Would be 5 stars except there are times the smoking fumes from outside seeps in and at times can be overbearing. Other than that, still one of my favourites.
J. Y.
Great food, fun izakaya vibe, super service, will visit again. The sashimi, gyoza were good and both their mushrooms dishes were easily our favorite. The drinks from the bar were also smashing. We had cocktails, beer and sake.
N. A.
Finally a proper Japanese bar in Hobart! Awesome food, great range of Japanese drinks, very friendly service!
P. B.
Amazing food,a great place to meet friends
Q. E. (. E.
Proper imported Japanese beer, amazing food, great servings and wonderful staff!
G. B.
Ramen delicious, wow. So good booked again next Saturday husbands Birthday!
M. S.
Delicious food served similar to izakayas in Japan. Plentiful range of beer, whiskey, sake and cocktails from local and Japanese sources. Prepare to book
M. V.
Authentic Japanese, feels like you're really there with the quirkiness and without any pretentiousness. Excellent menu with the oyster happy hour taken advantage of. Great selection of beer and whiskey with staff having great knowledge of the whiskey and gave great recommendations. A highly recommended place in Hobart, definitely the highlight of my culinary experience here. 😃😃😃
A. “. C.
Fantastic food and great service
S. H.
Great food! They also have reasonably priced cocktails which are always fun to try. The menu is fresh, interesting and worth trying. Best if done in a share plate style!
C. M.
Food was excellent, we really enjoyed the oysters and ramen. The service was attentive, and accommodating but a little bland. Will definitely return.
K. L.
The dishes here will wow you. Reasonable priced. Great service. Too bad I didn't have the chance to try the drinks but any food you order will not disappoint!!!
T. B.
The best food I have eaten in Hobart. Highly recommend.
P. A.
Really nice food great selection off beers helpful staff. Really enjoyed it. You won't be disappointed
L.
Favourite restaurant. Never had a bad meal or experience here.
K. H.
One of the best restaurants in Hobart, we would love to see some sushis as starters but anyway couldn't recommend more this place
K.
The kitchen reliably produces delicious fare. We live interstate and make it a point to come here whenever we’re in Hobart.
J. C.
Really liked this place, great atmosphere, food was good and great selection of alcohol, would recommend. Its definitely a bar with food not the other way around. Typically small servings as with most Japanese restaurants, but food was tasty and staff were great. Definitely going back next time we are in town
J. W.
Great prices of oysters during happy hour
L. O.
Food was amazing. Lovely waiting staff
J. C.
Very pleasant time in a very busy place. Not noisy, some excellent food. Particularly the chicken karaage, miso mushrooms and pork pancake.
A. G.
The new space out the back is incredible! The menu is amazing, as well as the service and quality of food. Every visit is consistently good!
s.
Food was fantastic. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend the sake tasting paddle.
C. O.
Amazing decor, friendly and helpful staff always with a smile. Great Japanese beer and whiskey selections (Favourite Asahi 500ml cans and Asahi dark). Delicious, delicious food. Instant fav!
P. M.
Absolutely incredible food. I've been twice now and both times it's such a surprise as to how fantastic the food is. One of my favourite places in Australia
M. C.
Great food and cocktails
T. A. L.
We went at lunch time, service was good. The food was average by our standard. Ordered a tonkostsu ramen and a chicken ramen, asparagus and pickled octopus. The ramen was a little on the soft side, so asked for it to be harder if you prefer it not too soft. The broth of the tonkotsu was too "loose" and not thick enough and lacks body, chicken ramen however broth was flavoursome the chicken meat was on the dry side.
I did not get to try other ramen in Hobart, the review and comparison was based on my experienced compared to Melbourne, Sydney & Japan.
M. J.
Always such brilliant service and wonderful food! We came tonight with my elderly grandparents and the staff were so accommodating even when we had to change the order as we had ordered to much. It was the first time either of them had tried Japanese and they loved it. Thank you so much for always being an amazing establishment to visit. Highly recommend!
C. M.
It's rated one of the best restaurants in hobart and we saw why. Food was amazing and the service staff were very attentive.
C. L.
The Food is fantastic
E. P.
Enjoy the vibe & abibience of Bar Wa Izakaya.
Freshly shucked oysters a must to try.
Half price 4pm-6pm
Service fantastic,
Thanks to team

Yeah it is a bit pricey, but it's some of the best food I've ever had. amazing drink selection, friendly service. One of my favourite places to go.

Ume-shu is your best choice for the drink, take it "on the rock" for better taste.
Great food, awesome and friedly staff. Taste like Japan !
Good place to go for diner.

Food was great. Service was good but not great.
Main issue was seating. Very uncomfortable bar seating arrangement was no good for our elderly parents. We raised the issue on the arrival but no solution offered.

In our short trip in Hobary, we came back twice to Bar Wa Izakaya just for their Smokey Pork Belly Ramen. The pork belly is not too fatty yet melting in your mouth.

Incredibly good service. Welcoming atmosphere. Dishes were innovative, delicious, and great for sharing.

I pretty much never rate anywhere, but absolutely loved Bar Wa Izakaya. Great quality, and whilst on the larger side compared to Izakaya in Japan it holds its own.
V. H.
Atmosphere and deco A+. Such a cute place. Sake options that are available are well chosen. Food however is a tad bit underwhelmed.
M. S.
Cool and hip japanese inspired share plates.

Excellent food, great service! Oysters are a must have, they're fresh and prepared with care and the drinks are amazing too! Definitely would recommend anyone to try this place out! It's a little bit out of the city Central but not a long way to walk. Will come back again before my trip is over!
C. H.
Food was amazing, great drinks, really nice place. We did feel the service was a little off-putting.

Very cosy and food is exceptional. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the service complements the experience. The Yuuzu & Soda is a refreshing partner to the Bento box. Will return next time in Hobart!

my favorite Japanese bar. beautiful décor and good service
R. H.
Great venue. Top staff and a wide range of food offerings. Loved the Tassie wasabi.
b. f.
Needs to decide if it's a bar it a restaurant, cos it'd be a great place to spend an evening getting some food every so often, like you could at a good bar but I'd more set up as a restaurant and keeps asking for reservations.
J. C.
The vibe is good but the food is just OK
B. n.
The food was good. There are plenty of options for drink. They are open till late which is great!

Great food, great bar and good service. Pity to stand waiting for the toilet next to the smokers area..... Really spoils the taste of the food.
K. A. B.
This picture didn't even do enough justice to describe how amazing the ramen here! I think Bar Wa is my favorite place in Hobart given the relaxing chill place and all delicious dish they have on the menu. My husband and I go here all the time on Saturdays for lunch just to catch ramen time!!!! I also love the new renovated place at the back (not to mention the upgraded toilet hahaha) I cant say anything bad about Bar Wa except they make me spend heaps! Lol!
PS. The quick service and friendly staff is a plus!
So if you want to know what I am talking about! Book now, better sooner rather than later!!!
J. B.
Loved the meal. We had recently been on holiday to Japan. The food here was so much better. Waitress explained nearly all menu and was so nice. Very reasonable and will definately come back next time in Hobart. Well done Bar Wa
M. D.
Great range of quality dishes to share and great service. The staff had decent availability and all were able to answer different questions about the menu and drinks. If you're after a great value meal, try the soba noodles or ramen for lunch.
D. D.
Amazing service and food. Eaten at many Japanese restaurants in Melbourne but this is just amazing.
C. P.
Very good food. Like, very good. It's a little cramped - pretty small place - so that wasn't the best experience. But the staff were good - helpful and attentive. There were no problems throughout the meal of paying st the end. Good selection of exotic drinks, if you want to try something new. Price was OK, but can't expect that quality to be cheap. Cool atmosphere too - maybe a tad dark as had a little trouble finding the light to read the menu.
S. P.
Food was delicious, great variety of food perfect for everyone and good service
M. P.

First time my partner and I have been here. Ordered several dishes and each one was better than the last! Was interesting to try the sake tasting platter (although I have to admit I'm not a fan). Can't fault the quality of food prepared for our enjoyment.
