Comments of Maharaja Authentic Indian Restaurant
P. P.
This would have to be the best and most authentic Indian food I’ve had all around the world and I’ve travelled a lot. The staff were absolutely adorable and I really can’t wait to come back. 5 stars all around!!
B. R.
Great dining space with an extensive menu. Very easy to get your level of spice right. Paper sheets a little in the way on the smaller tables. Relaxed atmosphere.
B. H.
You can tell that great care was given when preparing these meals. Everything was delicious and catered to our needs.
The waiter was very hospitable and pointed out the many vegan options (for myself).
I am reluctant to give 5 stars as there are no labels for vegan or gluten free dishes on the menu.
My partner really enjoyed the tandoori combination and garlic naan.
Bonus: Complimentary papadums

We went there on Boxing Day evening🌙. We had to wait a long time before we could place an order and then the food arrived quite late. I think they were understaffed.
The food is ok, not outstanding compared to some other restaurants in the locality.
L. Y.
Highly recommended to taste pure authentic Indian cuisine in Hobart! Biryani is so yummy and they serve quite a big amount. You can even share two people.love this place and will come again ...
S. f.
I really like the naan. My mum doesn't usually like butter chicken but she likes it from here and wants to try the biryani, as do I. Medium spicy more like mild spicy though. Staff are nice and decorations inside are nice as well. Samosa are pretty average though
P. S.
Pleasantly surprised with the quality of food and prices. A cut above other Indian restaurants and not too heavy either.
A. B.
Tasty authentic Indian food. Friendly service. Good variety of dishes. Cater well for vegetarians. Palak Paneer is delicious and highly recommended. Naan breads are some of the best in Hobart.
m.
Comfortable and relaxing venue, very extensive menu, reasonable variety of drinks, good service. Try the mushrooms, but everything on the menu is excellent. A little cold in terms of atmosphere but one of my favorite Hobart restaurants.
M. L.
Friendly staff, decent portions, excellent quality food.
Came here with a group of 8 so wait was a little long since they brought out the food together at once. We ordered a wide range of food including chicken tikka masala, naan and roti. The chicken was cooked to perfection as was the rice. Portion sizes were a little higher than expected but we all still managed to finish the meal.
Pros:
- very good food
- decent (not small) portion sizes
- friendly staff
Cons:
- Sometimes difficult to understand staff
- Somewhat long wait for food (not too bad considering serving for 8)
- Close seating arrangement (not too bad for location and 8 people)

Really good and fast Indian food in Hobart CBD. I had the thali which was so flavourful and properly spiced [medium].
R. S.
What a beautiful place which makes your dinner delicious and joyful. One of the best indian restaurants in Hobart. The food is beyond expectations and customer service is unbeatable even during the busy days. Can't ask for more. I am really fussy about the food so you can imagine if i say it's amazing means hats off.
S. S.
Food is awesome. We regularly get take away and find the curry tasty and varied.
a.
Poor quality seafood. The dish had great flavours but the overcooked cheap prawns ruined the dish.
V. M.
A very rich authentic Indian food. Slightly spicy but enjoyable. Do try Afghani kofta.
R. P.
Good food and generous portions. Just that the restaurant is a bit dated, with the chairs being most uncomfortable.
A bit of upkeep and this will be a good place for your Indian fix right in the center of Hobart CBD
S. A.
Wonderful place. Taste good. Highly recommend their Thali..
C. F.
This was, without doubt, the best Indian food I've had in my life.
E.
This was the most delicious curry I've had in Hobart. Big servings - one curry is easily enough for two people, which we found out the hard way after having to take the rest home in a takeaway container they very kindly provided for us. Garlic naan and rice was also delicious, definitely going back here!
S. S.
Good customer service and delicious food.
Pretty reasonable.
Must try Kofta Shamsavera.
N. R.
Me and my friend ordered kadai paneer and dhingri dulma with some cheese and garlic naan breads. They were best curries we have ever had. Amazing food, and ambiance this place has become our best curries restaurant in Hobart. I highly recommend this place. Thanks for best food.
J. M.
Fantastic food! This paneer is well worth returning for.
A. A.
Delicious homely food, no frills! Food came out relatively quickly, though we were worried it might not, based on other reviews. Overall good experience with service and food. No complaints!
M. R.
Best curry in Hobart imo! Lovely staff and massive vegetarian section in the menu.
M. Y.
We go after climbing occasionally. The food is always fantastic, and the food comes out fairly quickly after ordering. Last time I had the meal set that came with 3 different samples of curries, some rice and naan bread, and it was the perfect size for me (although I'm not a big eater). Not wheelchair friendly though, as it is up a flight of stairs.
S. S.
Me and my wife were in Hobart over a long weekend, staying in the city and we came across this indian restaurant nearby our hotel. Loved the food and ended up having dinner 3 nights in a row. Nice cosy sitting arrangement and the food was great to taste. Highly Recommend! 😊
M. K.
Good Tasty Indian Food.
I like the food here. It has authentic taste & flavours of indian spicy food with the option if you want it mild spicy on top of that the decor here literally gives you a nice feel of indian tradition. Order takes little time.
But a good taste always wins over 15 mins time, if you don't have to go to work 😉

The restaurant has created a good ambience. The food quality was a bit on the commercial overly spicy side but still good. I would have rated 4 stars but then THE STAFF PACKED ALL OUR DISHES IN ONE TAKE AWAY CONTAINER 🤦
seriously... Its a hospitality sin man! You dont pack two different dishes in one take away box!! But other than that the experience was not bad :) oh the restaurant gave us extra poppadum in the beginning so that was nice of the same staff :))
E. S.
Great food....but it was under staffed. There was an hour wait to take the order and about the same to get the food. Wait staff were trying their best but were run off their feet.
J. M.
Really enjoyed our experience here. Lovely staff, very polite and respectful. Quiet instrumental music in the background which is lovely. And the food was delicious. Highly recommend the thaali, you get to try a bit of everything and it doesn’t set you back too much. Spice level is customised to your preference and does not disappoint.
D.
Very nice food and good priced take away. The banquet is very good value for money and they may swap a dish if your party dislikes it. They are understaffed so if it is very busy you don't get served( I seen two separate couples walk out even after having an entree). The food is great we eat there or get take aways once a month.
R. V.
You guys have made a very good come back!Your food tastes fresh and is bursting with flavour. I have to say we were regular at Annapurna, but now we are tempted to keep coming back to Maharaja! Staff are also polite and smiling, that just makes our whole experience even better. Keep it up guys!
j. w.
Felt like walking into a little India. Nice environment, delicious, quick, affordable food. Accommodating to children and vegetarians. Happy we dropped in.
S. C.
No doubt the best restaurant to enjoy Indian Food in Hobart. I would love to try "Indian thali" next time.......
J. D.
I am a frequent traveller to Tasmania for work and have tried mny Indian restaurant in Hobart. This is the best Indian restaurant in terms of Taste Authenticity and must say the staff is very friendly as well. I ordered Hara Bhara Kabab which was not on the Menu but the chef/owner was very kind enough to serve me and must say the best I have ever had. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone who likes Indian food.
M. M.
We could smell the amazing food from the street after we got in from Brisbane and were searching for somewhere quick and easy to eat. We weren't disappointed. The samosas were incredibly delicious and the curry we shared between us was more than ample, with garlic naan to boot we had a pretty delicious meal. The quality was incredible and we were definitely lucky to have stumbled across one of Hobart's treasures.
V. G.
True to its name, authentic Indian food! I live in the UK and went traveling to Hobart in March,2016. Of all the Indian restaurants that I went to in Australia, Maharaja had the right blend of spices and herbs and so much variety. I would definitely urge everyone to try the food here.
Food - 5/5
Service - 4/5
Ambiance - 3/5
Cost - 4/5.
M.
We had the Butter Chicken, Beef Vindaloo and Dal Makhani. Couldn't wish for better Indian. We will be back. Great service too.
G. S.
Lovely food. Service is great. This place has always been our go to indian meal place. (Tried almost all Indian food in Hobart and settled with this one:).
C. V.
Hello
This evening I came in to dine with a table of 8 and the food was soooo delicious I've tried all the Indian restaurants in Hobart and I believe this one is the best
C. M.
Long waiting time but food was good
P. R.
Amazing food, substantial portion size good pricing. Yes the frontline is massively missing a smile but the flavors cope up for that.
The place is open till 10.30 pm for takeaway, much helpful for travelers who land late in the day and need a dinner past regular dinner time.
P. B.
We usually get take out from here and being from the UK we have very high standards when it comes to Indian Food, this is by far the best Indian food I've had in Australia. They always get the heat right, the lamb is super tender and everything that comes out of the tandoor is so tasty including the fresh nann bread. Great quality and great value. It would be nice to see the interior get a revamp to make it more appealing to eat in.
D. M.
Normally I don’t post food reviews, but wow. Unbelievably fresh, flavourful and spicy. Can’t recommend enough!
H. A. U.
The best restaurant in Hobart and maybe the world. Gobhi Mussalam and Dal Makhani not to be missed. Great place to get together with family and friends and share food and joy. Plentiful vegan and vegetarian options and huge serves at very affordable price. WHAT A PLACE!
c. j.
I took take away from Maharaja for dinner and it was very good. Had popular chicken tikka masala with basmati rice, roti and nan. My order was taken by a welcoming reception staff and she suggested chicken tikka masala. I received my order in resonable time and I was very happy with the quality of food, authenticity, taste and size of the portion. Will definitely go there for second time. Only suggestion is reduce food coloring please, feels bit artificial.
L. B.
Lovely little indian place, open late and not very busy but awesome food for a late dinner. Highly recommended
K. K. S.
Lovely food in a kitsch but cozy environment. Highly recommend it. Funny you should go to Hobart to have the best Indian food I've ever had.
J. S.
Exceptional food and service at a very reasonable price. The menu here has a lot that most other indian places do not - so if your an indian food fiend looking for new dishes give this place a whirl! The banquets are particularly good value.
L. D.
Great quality food, and good value for money. Less on the cream and sugar, more on the savoury and flavours which is my preference for Indian.
J. S.
It is a pure authentic food i have evere eat
J. J.
I would call it the best Indian restaurant in Hobart(at least out of those I have been to). Everything we ordered tasted really good. Had that taste of an Indian restaurant in India. Would recommend trying the Akbari chicken and the Chicken tikkas.
J. K.
food is so good you'll eat more than you need and break your pants and fall off your chair. You pay a little extra but that comes with the quality and servings size.
A. P.
Huge vegetarian option, by far the biggest list I've seen on a menu. Spoilt for choice with veggie dishes..... Love it! Food was tasty, and prices are reasonable. Worth trying.
P. D.
Brilliant food when we visited in February this year. Particularly memorable was the Maharaja Platter for two, By the way, can you guys come to Brisbane and share some of your knowledge with the Indian restaurants up here?
P. A.
Food was delicious...it was great to get the taste of india after long time. My parents from India too loved the food. Dal fry was amazing!! Highly recommended
Megha
P. M.
Great food. Excellent dairy free and gluten free curries. Lamb Rogan Josh was tasty!
L.
Good food, cheap prices but definitely a dingy place.
T. S.
Absolute wonderful food. Authentic Indian food. I came from Brisbane and Tasmania was the last place i thought i could find authentic indian food, but i was surprised at how good they were
T. K.
We ordered Masala Tea but did not enjoyed the tea. Missing almost all the flavours.
l. s.
Great friendly wait staff, i went to order my meal but was suggested something else from the menu which was delicious. A vege dish, which i normally wouldn't order. Good to know the staff know their stuff. Would recommend to others.
T. E.
Best curry in Hobart and it's not even really close. Lovely staff, great vegetarian options!
P. S.

P. M.
Food was so good in taste. Must visit to taste authentic Indian dish.

Proper Indian food here. Large portion size and plenty of spice and heat in the dishes. Medium heat might be more than enough for most people.
