My wife and I visited the Astor Grill last night for about the 3rd time and as usual our expectations were exceeded. The quality of the steak, the friendliness of the staff, and the over all dining experience was spectacular. Worth every cent and highly recommended if you value high-quality local produce and excellent customer service.

So we had a younger server and this guy was all over it the man was the pinnacle of 5 star service
The food omg the food the best meal I've had in my life, I would fly to Hobart just to eat here.
Every aspect of the experience was 5 star 🤏🤙

Definitely one of Hobart's best fine dining restaurants specialising in prime steak menu. Recommend the share plate Robins Island Wagu

Very nice restaurant.Good service, happy friendly and helpful staff. Great food at good prices. Wagyu rump steak, sorbet and whisky ice cream

Lovely setting, great food and really good wine list. We couldn't fault any dish we got. All the side plates were really nice and the desserts where just as good. To top it off, the service is A+ grade, some of the best I've seen in Hobart!

June 2021. The Astor Grill is best described as an old Manhattan style bistro crossed with an old English American Bar, located in the heart of Hobart. The Astor Grill is well patroned for vey good reasons. The staff are super friendly, the meals absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere, eclectic. The menu will attempt to test your boundaries, so if you're up for trying something new, here's your chance. The wallaby was cooked to perfection, accompanied with pumpkin puree and a plum jous. The duck breast absolutely delicious. Scallops and octopus presented to perfection and the desserts delicious as always. If you're looking for a romantic night out, or looking to try something different, The Astor Grill may be your answer.

Superb food. A chef that knows how to prepare vegetable side dishes so they keep their flavor is a great sign. The steaks were mouthwatering and felt like they were melting in your mouth, that's how tender the meat was.
The whisky ice cream was a fantastic choice to top of this superb meal.

The Astor Grill is a charming restaurant that belongs to another era - and really suits Hobart. The decor is warm and friendly with rich fabrics and timber; the entrance flanked by pillars and the inside walls near the kitchen a treasure trove of liquor.
Staff were really friendly and knowledgeable, making a point settling us in quickly and then leaving us breathing room to decide on our meals. The food was simple but very good and service was quick.
Well worth a visit.

The most amazing steak we've ever had. Perfect portions and amazing staff to match! Thanks guys

On holiday and paid this a visit, wide variety of steaks, mine was perfect matched with the most outstanding service.

Exceptional service, knowledgeable staff, delicious meals in a contemporary relaxed environment. What more could you ask for!!!

The meal from entrée to Dessert was was amazing and also the service from the staff and the Quality of the meals presented by the Chef was top notch. If you are considering dining at the Astor I highly recommend it.

Beautiful place for steak, or even a nice dinner with friends and family. The steaks are beautifully cooked to perfection (with just a slight variation in rarity of the meat, but not big enough to be a fuss of). Great for a special occasion, or even a treat for yourself.
The ambiance might be a little dim, but they're going for a casual contemporary style of dining. Theres a good mood, and the waiters are really friendly with great service.
There is a decent selection of beers and ciders on the drinks menu as well. Wine is also available.
Prices are very reasonable and fairly affordable.
Parking should not be a problem after normal working hours in the evening.

Came here without a booking. Was not sure if I would get in and was pleasantly surprised when I was let in.I was led to my table by very lovely staff.I ordered the fish and chips as a side. The food was delicious.Would definitely go back.

Amazing food and fantastic service! Highly recommend for any special occasion

Almost perfect but only 4 stars. Why? Basically food, ambience, wine selection and wine advice as well as booking experience - all fantastic. Major let down was service - while owner / manager's manners were impeccable, one of the staff had absolutely no idea - her performance was not something one would expect, especially not considering everything else including the prices. She just wanted to take orders quickly like in a cheap Asian place. She offered no advice, couldn't, she was continuously topping red wine and overfilling water cups. I don't think she had any training whatsoever. Perfect experience ruined.

Absolutely divine food, what else could I say, but go and yry it yourself. Best food I've had in Hobart.

We have just eaten here for the second time in 2 years. The food is absolutely amazing and the service is phenomenal. We had the scallops and tartare for starters and the eye fillet wrapped in bacon. The scallops were so fresh the steaks cooked perfectly. Sam our waiter was so good at his job we never had to ask for a single thing he pre empted our every need! We will most definitely be back every time we travel to HobArt and highly recommend this restaurant for a nice meal.

I accidentally saw this restaurant while having early night walk and tried the 40 day aged steak in bone. The meat is tender and the steak is cooked in my liking. The service is excellent however the rockwall wagyu porterhouse coffee rub steak is still the best steak I ever eaten in Hobart.

Our waitress Belinda was so friendly and helpful.
The beef was delicious, but the best part of the meal was the truffle infused mashed potato.

Wonderful! Four of us totally enjoyed the ambiance, attentive waiter and delicious food last night. We devoured the perfectly cooked duck and 157 steaks, one rare and one medium as requested with side dishes of mushrooms, mash with Truffle oil and frites. Nothing to complain about here except that we had no room to try the whisky icecream. Next time.

We really enjoyed our meal at this lovely restaurant. It’s old fashioned in a very good way - white tablecloths, attentive service, not too loud, delicious food. Service was charming, timely and unobtrusive. The food was lovely - we had scallops, steak tartare, Steak 157 and crayfish - absolutely nothing to complain about.

We were lucky enought to get into the Astor on a Thursday night. This place is a gem, i knew it would be good when the sparkling water tasted good. Entrees, we had the oysters natural, the dressing that accompanied the oysters was a delight. We also had the quail what a clever and delishes little dish. Mains, i had the wallaby and my wife had the duck. The wallaby was a stunner the jus that accomoanied was a perfect match for a great dish. The duck was superb. The deserts were heavenly i had the special and have never experienced anything like it. Each mouthfull was a double shot of flavour, the berry flavour of the compote would subside followed by the slightest hint of a smoky mushroom flavour in the panacotta. It reminded me of charlie and the chocolate factory and the 'baked dinner' chewing gum, one flavour just followed the next. Just thinking about it now and I am still amazed. We ended with two cheeses and lavosh. Now our meal was not cheap in the end we had four courses. I had four little river golden ales and my wife had two gin and tonics. You pay for perfection and this is the best dinner we have ever had. Do yourself a favour and treat yourself to the Astor grill. When i come back to Tasmania i sure will.

Excellent place to dine. Went for lunch and the food was delicious. You have an option to order from the a la carte menu or they have a lunch special of 2 courses for $45. The salmon and steak 157 were perfectly cooked.
The sorbet was refreshing and the crema catalana was well worth a try.
L. F.
Amazing food and fantastic service! Highly recommend for any special occasion
J. F.
Most of our food was awesome! Very nice atmosphere and location. Be careful of the duck though, one of our party found it to be tough and difficult to chew. However the chef said it was cooked how they normally do it and reckoned nothing was wrong. But they knew what they had in their mouth was terrible and struggled to cut it. So if your idea of good duck breast is rubber duck, then by all means enjoy. Was worth the extra cost as long as you steer clear of the duck.

Every year Ian Gurner Dental Care hosts a Christmas in July dinner for our staff. This year we introduced them to a Hobart institution - The Astor Grill.
What a fabulous night. A huge thank you to Rocky and his whole team. The food, wine and service were all spot on. And the private dining room the perfect place to be. We could not have found a better venue to celebrate.
P. C.
Repeat guests due to the high standard of menu choices....not many Silver Service restaurants in Hobart for special occasions celebrations....Peter and Pamela
M. G.
We had a good experience and wine list is extensive. Steaks were great. Service could have been a bit sharper...but at the end of the day we had a very good night.
I. L.
Eveything from the cocktails, entrees, mains, and deserts was delicious and cooked to perfection. We ordered a large variety of dishes and were super happy with everything we had. The large variety of steak cuts provides something for everyone's preferences. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is very cozy.
J. M.
Superb food, wine, ambience and customer service! Highly recommend and will visit every time I’m working in Hobart. Is rare to get this combination of fantastic service and beautiful food. The oysters, steak, Pinot and chocolate pudding were all simply fantastic! Thank you!
A. B.
Stunning historic building and beautiful decor with a charming, old world atmosphere. Wonderful service and extensive wine list, including many 'by the glass."
The steak was cooked to perfection. I agree with another reviewer that there should be more vegetables - two small carrots and two mini pieces of broccoli for a $43 steak and " spring vegetables "were inadequate. Complimentary bread would have been a nice touch too, at this upper price point. Erring on the side of generosity for such things that don't cost much would have made this rating 5 stars.
Definitely a classy place and worth a try!

Fantastic meal in cosy place. Had the eye fillet with green peppercorn sauce and it was spot on. I love my steak, too and not easily impressed but this was super delicious. Staff were friendly and efficient so there was nothing to fault.

Always a wonderful experience at the Astor grill from rocky the owner and his lovely staff, the food and more so the steak is outstanding in general and the ambiance is perfect for romantic dinners and group bookings alike. A Hobart institution and rightly so, highly recommended by all of my family and I :)

Four of us visited this restaurant last Saturday night. It has old worldly charm and the service was great even though the restaurant was full. All the food ordered was well presented and very tasty. The family a party of 12 decided to dine here for Mother’s Day get together. We haven’t been here for quite some time but it was really nice to enjoy the space, ambience, food and service

I had dinner at the Astor Grill on Tuesday and Wednesday night this week. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere with prompt and efficient service. I enjoyed my meals both nights and will return there on my next visit to Hobart.

I have been there twice in the past month, and twice it has been sensational. The food is truly perfection and the service is beyond compare.
Magnificent.

One of the rare places left in Hobart that you can get dressed up for dinner. Fine dining and a classy atmosphere keeps this restaurant as our favourite choice. The meals are top quality and the service is excellent.
A. P.
As always an amazing meal... The Rib eye was sensational...

Finer dining at The Astor. Beautiful dining room, nice atmosphere, very friendly and professional staff, amazing steak (prices reflect but you will not regret it). Also best drinks list in Hobart. Calculate your tip as you will be given the option to tip when paying.

My partner and I recently had our wedding reception at the Astor Grill. From day one it was a pleasure to work with Rocky and his staff to plan the event. On the night everything ran like clockwork. Their dishes (particularly the Belgian Chocolate Moelleux) had our interstate guests wowed. Hats off to you guys, you did an excellent job!
A. N.
The food here was delicious and the steak was cooked perfectly. I would highly recommend the pork belly as a starter, it melted in my mouth. We had the most kindest waitress who was very casual and fun to talk to.

A special evening for us. Wonderful food, great service.

This is a great restaurant with one of the best steaks in Hobart. Charming atmosphere and a central location make this an ideal place to eat. I've been here for medium sized birthdays as well as anniversaries. Service is fantastic
S. S.
A truly wonderful dining experience, highly recommended to make that special occasion memorable. Delicious food combined with magnificent service and a homely atmosphere.

Delish ++. We were lucky enough to get a table without reservation. Very fancy menu. Impeccable service. I ordered the confit duck and it was marvellous. All in our party thoroughly enjoyed our food. Portions are not too big but we all left satisfied with our mains. It is a bit pricy, but with a menu such as theirs, that is expected and was worth every cent.
L.
Wow! The food here is exceptional! With the addition of Great service & atmosphere I can easily recommend this restaurant. With each mouthful of food I guarantee you will have an OMG! moment.. I'd recommend booking a table in advance though to avoid disappointment, this is one of my favourite places to dine.

The Astor Grill is back to its finest in food and service.
With a new owner and a reinvigorated team, The Astor Grill is back to what made it an institution for diners in Hobart for years.
Generous servings of wonderful food, moderate prices providing great value, friendly service and a very well thought out wine list.
Enjoy local Tasmanian produce in stylish surrounds - you have to try the Steak Astor. Amazing steak with stilton cheese. Just perfection for steak lovers.
A. C.
Food was OK but uninspiring.
This somewhat tired and dated hotel-based dining room/restaurant could be so much more of a "destination" if the owners put in the effort to match some of their newer competitors in Salamanca Place and North Hobart that run rings around them for service, menu with local content and an interesting/engaging ambience.
On a side note : When will owners/management learn to train their frontline staff to educate themselves on the menu - I.e. the wait staff are there every night, the menu doesnt change, if the chef/owner chooses to put a "brand name" on your signature/premium dishes on the menu then you should know where it comes from and why it is better/different to the local/generic ingredient.
In her defence, the waitress went and checked (with someone?) after we asked the question "where's it from?" Expecting it to be a little know local specialty producer in Tassie (as we were keen to continue sampling local produce.)
Unfortunately for her, by the time she returned with the incorrect, generic, guess of "somewhere near Melbourne" as supplied by her team, one of our party had already googled it and gave her the correct answer..actually it is NSW and nowhere near Melbourne (or Tassie)... dunno why her team couldn't have done that?

Delicious food. My wife and I had the lamb and wallaby followed by the chocolate mouxe and everything was superb! Good atmosphere and service as well

Classy but casual. Impeccable service. Excellent food. Smaller portions as expected from this type of restaurant.
J. P.
Excellent food Excellent service Excellent atmosphere for a nice quiet dinner and a more mature crowd (35+)

Booked a dinner for two, restaurant is quaint and romantic, not a standard steakhouse.
Great produce and wine selection, all served by a friendly, attentive and knowledgeable waitress. Excellent.

Prices are up there but worth it. Had the lobster pata which was declious. The eye fillet was cooked perfectly. In terms of service, it would be one of the better restaurants in Hobart.

Fabulous steak, lots of other delicious choices, comprehensive wine list and great service.
