What a wonderful welcoming atmosphere! Live music was perfect loved the sax playing mostly lol but the whole band was awesome :) The staff most welcoming checking constantly but not to constant that we were comfortable and had everything we needed, great smiles :) The food was delicious oh yeah steak cooked to perfection, chicken superb! I had a few cocktails this night Mmm they were yummy hehe The publicans were the nicest most welcoming folk who entertained us all night a lovely place to be on a cold Saturday night in Hobart town! Do drop in support the locals we will return.

Had dinner here tonight, spectacular food not like your regular pub grub dripping with oil. The food tasted delicious, the chicken was well done and the veg was amazing. This pub sits very conveniently in walking distance of the City Centre and Salamanca, and is well-worth the stroll for the food, wine list and service. The Duke makes a point of using local Tasmanian produce wherever possible. My wife had the belly pork which came with baby carrots, all sitting on a delightful corn mash with spiced apple chunks. I had the Shoulder of Lamb which came with baby beetroots, beans and cress, sitting on a sweet potato mash. Both meals were cooked perfectly and the presentation was excellent. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and able to discuss the menu options in great detail. There was also live music but it was a little loud in the dining room for us so we took our meal in the bar area. We highly recommend The Duke for it's high-quality food and excellent service.

We were there for a birthday party in the funtion room. The facilities are good, and there was a bartender to make drinks. The host of the party organised dinner which was an alternate drop of chicken and steak. We payed $30pp for quite average food imo, which did not meet my standards. The drinks were also overpriced.

I very much enjoyed my time at the Duke last night. I was there for dinner with a bunch of old and new friends after a meeting in the Duke's upstairs Meeting Room. As always, Doug and Kartika were warm and welcoming hosts. I am teaching my granddaughters chess and I need practice myself, but don't know anyone who plays. I was very happy to learn the Duke has a Chess Night, 6pm every Thursday.

They have fantastic food and booze and their chips are to die for. I must highlight the fact that they have Trivia nights every wednesday (If I'm correct) so it is even more fun to take a bunch of close friends and see how smart you really are! Also, they are huge Sea Shepherd supporters and regularly have movie screenings. Food & Booze + Helping raise awareness to protect the planet, what a perfect combo!

A great night with my husband. This place was on my itinerary for dinner (yes, I'm an organised freak) mainly due to great reviews - proximity to hotel a bonus. Did not disappoint! We arrived about 5.30pm for pre-dinner drinks and met the owner who was so genuinely friendly and open - felt welcome straight away. Dinner was an amazing steak - cooked to perfection and pulled lamb shoulder - delicious. Highly recommended. Great place in an original 1846 building.

Satisfying food with cozy environment! The lady boss / staff is very friendly and explain to us the speciality from their menu. We tried the scallops crumb with chips, salts and pepper squid and lamb shoulder and all are awesome. We even come back again after few days to try out different dishes but unfortunately they are closed for event. Would love to come again for our next visit to Hobart!

A really excellent evening with wonderful food, tap beers and company! It was like being invited into someones home rather than being at a pub, which was a lovely experience. Our friends had two young girls and Contika was incredible with them, playing the piano with them and showing them how it works. I would definitely recommend the duke for that extra personal touch.

A surprise gem in the heart of Hobart. Visited with my elderly father and chosen initially for proximity but was incredibly blown away by the meals, the service and the kindness of the owners. Dad is still raving about the crumbed Tassie scallops. If you’re after a hearty meal and a casual but comfortable atmosphere, this place is a must-do!

When we walked into the Duke, it was empty and quiet. Initially, we were cautious and thought if its empty, there's a reason for that. To our surprise, the food was great, the service was abundant, and the gentleman, Doug, gave us loads of suggestions for touring around the southern corner of Tasmania. There was live piano tonight, but a band is set to play for Friday. Would highly suggest any travellers passing through the area, interested in knowing the sites to see in Hobart :)

I had the lamb shank in red wine sauce with creamy mash potato and brussel sprouts. It was delicious. The shank was big and the meat was falling off the bone. The beer was cold, the atmosphere was warm and laid back, the staff were friendly. I enjoyed my dinner very much.

Ordered eye fillet ,I don't mind paying $38 because I had to stop myself from licking the plate. Charred and medium rare with peppercorn sauce to die for. Atmosphere was warm and inviting,dessert was good but the coffee was more than great and I have tasted quite a bit of coffee whilst down in hobart for a week,all in all you will pay top dollar but you will enjoy the food. I prefer to pay a little more and enjoy the food than less and not eat it. Thumbs up !!!

Great little pub. It turns out it's over 100yrs old but you would never know. Clean and comfortable with great food and service. A brilliant selection of local whiskey and gin, plus a great Tasmanian Craft Beer on tap too. Loved it !

I'd love to be more kind, but sadly the place has lost its appeal for me. The previous owner was more congenial, understood customer service much better. The quality of the food is a big letdown. Lunches one year apart proved to be equally disappointing. It's a great CBD location and has a ton of potential, but still a way to go to get there, I'm afraid.

Awesome place! My boyfriend and I got to Hobart late from the airport and this was the only place we found open near our hostel. Lucky us! We ended up staying there for a few hours chatting with the owners. Lovely people that cooked a pizza for us even if their kitchen was closed and let us try a lot of their good quality gins and tonics. They know their stuff and have an incredible variety. Definitely go there for a degustation and a friendly environment!

I recently moved to Hobart and grateful that I found the duke. If you are visiting Hobart, The Duke is a must for those who are looking to avoid the tourist traps and experience the city as a local. As you walk in, you are greeted with a warm familiar feeling emitting from every corner. Noticeably, the staff takes pride in where they work, and is apparent through the attentive, polite, and friendly service provided. The menu has thoughtful range with something for everyone. Be sure to look at the specials that change daily. Cooked with expertise and care, the food is fresh, local, and delicious. I have trouble understanding how the reasonable prices can provide the absolute upscale quality and portions brought to the table, (I almost feel guilty but not enough that I don’t take advantage of it). Personally, the woodfire pizzas, that always come out perfect (not burnt as I find too often at other restaurants) and a few filled to the rim cold draft Boags are the perfect warm up to the brilliant live music. While so many places in Hobart routinely feature cover bands or a single acoustic guitar The Duke stands out as one of the few places where you can find a range of great unique original music. Local blues and jazz can be called their specialty, but it is also the spot to see the latest musicians express and impress with their incredible talents. I could keep going on, but I am heading up there shortly for my partners birthday. So Ill just say it would be a shame to deny yourself a visit to this special place.

Dillon wins the best waiter award on our trip and has already exceeded our expectations with his personality help and laughter. I first came here for a fang late last year, now when planning my travels through Tassie it's factored in as top of the 'MUST DO' list. The tucker is great the prices are very reasonable. The menu is quite diverse. The staff are very attentive and ready to help to ensure you enjoy yourself! They can't do enough for you, nothing is too hard for them. It's a bloody top spot!
