Comments of ARU Restaurant

My favourite dining experience in Melbourne. Asian-owned, many Asian staff. Great customer service. You can tell by the kitchen that dishes are cooked to perfection. Innovative vegetarian dishes, delicious desserts and wine list, and a very impressive sake / umeshu list too.
J. F.
Really looked forward to dining here after all the hype, but the food and cocktails left us unfortunately lacking from our visit.
The dishes are all very well executed and tasty. But to be completely honest there really is nothing unique, as there was not a dish in the evening that left us wanting to come back.
The cocktails for the price were 1 dimensional and lacked complexity, they all either tasted very sweet, boozy or just sour. All this was after the group tasted 6 different cocktails, we did not find one that peaked our interest.
For the record the staff though were absolutely fabulous, friendly and helpful. They made mistakes with our order and owned their error and made it up to us.
The venue does look gorgeous, chic and very sexy, the curtains used to break up the spaces do make you feel like you have some initimacy and privacy.
However, in the hyper competitive space that ARU hopes to take up in the CBD there is just too many other venues that have it beat in the categories that count the food and the drinks.

Absolutely delicious dishes, very friendly and professional crew with accommodating chef to dietary reqs. Some spicy dishes that doesn’t make you sweat. Beautiful interior with quality seating and tables, metal mesh partitions looks great but functionally separates the casual dining and private event space without compromising the ‘breathability’ of the space - must have for Covid era. There is a large event area for bigger parties at the back. Bar seating is perfect for watching the chef creates the delicious dishes while having cocktails or whatever you are fancy for… book it now

Walked in for weekday lunch and luckily they had a table available. Lotsa hype about this restaurant.
Overall, nice ambience and good service. Food was good although the recommended dishes for me would be the pate en croute, torched salmon and dry aged duck. The mushroom dish was too salty though. Duck sausage sanga looks good on menu but wasn’t particularly special.

Walked past by chance, what a great discovery! Had coffee and dessert but the food looked amazing and we will have to try it next time. The smell of the Morton bay bugs and other things was mouth watering. We had the scorched pavlova with a hot chocolate and it was the perfect way to cap off an evening.

Finally I’m here! A nice and well decorated place with several districts. They do better than most of restaurants, putting curtains between tables. This gives me a more private feeling even it’s a crazy busy hour🤣🤣. I like the Asian fusion food best. They have both creativity and delicious taste on all the food.

Surprisingly good experience!! Chef Khanh is right there assembling entrees and steering the woks, with calmness and assertiveness.
This duck has drawn my whole heart to it, with the familiar flavour of Cantonese roast duck that collide with rich and expressive smoky source!! Not to mention the perfect crispy sheer layer of skin, which has no wrinkle at all😆OMG so good
The best part, steam towel before the entree serving!!! I was so moved by this nostalgic hospitality, true Asians would know that steamy towel and childhood memory of banquet😭
Everything else is perfectly presented and delivered with prompt pace.
It’s good to see the team comprise majority of Asian chefs and fair amount if female chefs.
This is the place we would go on to support constantly and hope Chef Khanh keep the diligence and devotion, to cultivate more next generation Asian chefs to bring more authentic dishes and innovative restaurants to us😊

Don't you love it when desserts are served first before the mains? The amazing team at Aru kindly abide to our pleas for desserts first and it was a great way to start the meal. Love the Kaya Waffle and the Tapioca Pudding with Banana and Honeycomb, both so creamy and indulgent. We also really enjoyed the Claypot Broken Rice, crunchy charred rice are the best and the duck fat adds a robust and rich flavour. The Dry Aged Duck was excellent - tender and cooked to perfection. Mushrooms with Tofu Curd and Kohlrabi + Eggplants round up this beautiful meal.

One of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had in Melbourne. I can see why Aru is a finalist for the Best New Restaurant Category!
Exceptional service, fantastic ambience, excellent food. We were greeted by Dawn who went above and beyond in accommodating our seating needs. Holly gave us great food recommendations, and was so courteous & professional throughout our meal.
We had the wagyu tongue, mushroom/tofu curd/fried donuts, duck sanga, pate en croute (creatively in the flavour of banh mi) as starters. The duck sanga (not pictured) was the standout!
Then the crab fried rice, Moreton bay bug, torched salmon, tumeric chicken, dry aged duck (aged for 14 days), Savoy cabbage, claypot broken rice. Everything was delicious. The dry aged duck is a must - perfectly crispy skin, moist meat. I loved the claypot broken rice, with its depth of flavour and crispy bits. My family loved the salmon as well.
All in all, it was an amazing dining experience. It was fully booked at buzzing when we were there even on a weeknight. Aru truly represents the best of Melbourne’s dining scene.

The new sister restaurant to Sunda Dining has both Sensational Style & Substance. Contemporary-Upmarket yet Casual- cool ambiance - perfect lighting, decor and music. Service was sublime from start to finish 10/10. The attention to detail was meticulous!
Wonderful menu with so many interesting & intriguing dishes. Everything that came out of the kitchen was plated beautifully.
The “Bunnings sausage sizzle” (Duck Sausage Sanga) looked and tasted amazing- you use your fingers to eat it and they bring hot towels to clean your hands afterwards. Cleverly crafted perfection.
“Pate en croute/ flavours of bahn mi” was genius- again, cleverly crafted perfection.
The Savoy cabbage & enoki mushrooms was also incredible and so delicious. Spanner crab fried rice with smoked roe - perfectly balanced and assembled.
We finished by sharing the kaya jam parfait (ice cream sandwich) - again a beautiful balance of flavour and texture. Sensational.
An incredible night of top service & food - can’t wait to go back.
Highly recommended!

Good fusion of modern Australian-Asian platters which are meant to be shared. Highlight came thick and fast, with the house cocktails (Pretend Marriage was amazing) being a big hit. The hiramasa kingfish and bites were delightful. The black noodles hark back to boarding school days of cooking indomie, albeit elevated. The duck was succulent, yet tough on some parts. Tougher was to justify its 50 dollar mark. Dessert was crowd pleasing, although there was insufficient kaya taste in the kaya waffle. Aru was fun, but was a bit of hit and miss on some dishes. Service was unquestionably exemplary.

📝: Finally got to try out Aru restaurant that everybody’s been hyped up about. We went in and ordered dessert right away as it was the first thing on our minds 🤣.
❤️: Absolutely loved the Tapioca Pudding, Butterscotch, Banana, and Wattle Honeycomb. For savories, I loved the Dry Aged Duck. Make sure you have it with their Clay Pot Broken Rice, Duck Fat, Sausage, Egg Yolk. Try these and you won’t disappoint!

Very modern, trendy restaurant. Polite and friendly service without being too intrusive. Food was pretty delicious with interesting ingredients and combinations, highlight was the duck with crispy skin. Overall pleasant experience and great place to meet up with friends. Would return.

Must try restaurant in Melbourne. The food was amazing. Love it! The service was the best. Very prompt and heart warming. Will definitely be back. Thanks Aru Team!

If there's one cuisine that might legitimately lay claim to being "Australian" it's modern Asian fusion, that wonderful combination of high class Australian produce combined with Asian flavours, excellent technique, and a little bit of creative flair. Think Supernormal, Chin Chin, Gingerboy, Spice Temple, Lucy Liu, and so on. Aru continues this tradition and is a most welcome addition to Melbourne's CBD restaurant offerings. The long room is welcoming despite its post-industrial uber-chic vibe, and the well-staffed open kitchen provides a high energy diorama of attractive cool efficiency. Service is friendly, efficient, and informative. Our wine waiter was particularly helpful and helped us navigate the very long drinks list. The food is just sensational and features some traditional dishes with a creative Asian twist. We enjoyed the forbidden rice sourdough bread; mushrooms, tofu and Chinese fried doughnut; and pate en croute to start. The flavours were fantastic, with the pate en croute being a highlight. What looked like a classic French pate en croute revealed flavours of banh mi! It was a revelation. We follow with the duck (an absolute must), the savoy cabbage (not much to look at, but a brilliant twist on this maligned green), rice noodles with pork jowl, and fried rice with spanner crab. I could not fault one dish. We finished with a variety of desserts, including mod Asian twists on both creme caramel and pavlova. Seriously, this is an excellent restaurant. Five stars.

Was very excited to eat here, maybe a bit too excited. Most of the menu sounded appealing to me, in particular the Pate En Croute. Sadly, the flavours were lacking; the pickles were the best part. The Dry Aged Duck was cooked well, but the sauce wasn't great. The Duck Sausage Sanga was really good, but it was small and thus pricey. The Wagyu Tongue, Egg Noodles and Kaya Jam Waffle were also good. The wontons were a bit meh so I would give those a miss. Can't comment on the vegetarian food as I did not partake, but apparently the enoki mushroom and sauce on the cabbage was really good. Service and setting were great as expected, and sitting on a counter seat facing the kitchen gives you a great view of the action.

Came here for joint birthday celebration. We received a very warm welcome and the ambience of the restaurant was very inviting.
Especially enjoyed the duck, Morton Bay bugs and crab fried rice. Will definitely come back to try the other dishes as we couldn't fit anymore into our tummies.
M. P.
We came to celebrate our birthdays, the staff made huge effort to look after us, making sure we were having a great time, they were very friendly and hard working, everything on the menu tasted great. Cant decide which dish is my favorite, but definitely I will not forget to order the fried rice when I am back, which will be soon.
T. N.
I came here to dine with 3 of my close friends on Saturday night & I can’t wait to come back already. My friends & I had such a great experience. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff were kind & welcoming, the atmosphere was lively, the food was cooked to perfection & the cocktails were so good. The highlights of my night was the forbidden rice sourdough, sangas, pate en croute, Savoy cabbage, spanner crab fried rice, Moreton bay bug & of course the dry aged duck.
Thank you Aru! I’ll definitely be recommending this restaurant for my family & friends.

Another gem in the crown that is Melbourne's charismatic dining scene. A lovely fit out creates the perfect ambience to enjoy a menu rich in flavour and full of creativity.
Our favourites were the duck sausage sanga, pate en croute and the dry aged duck - but every dish was a hit. A stunning mix of flavours from the depths of southern Asia to the humble Bunnings car park (get the duck sausage and you'll understand!).
For the wine lovers....the list is exclusive, and almost exhausting to get through...but our sommelier was knowledgeable and more than happy to make some fine wine recommendations.
If this is what Khanh and the team are serving up on night #2, I look forward to returning and eating my way through the rest of the menu.
Congrats on another success!

A modern bar-restaurant, where the drinks menu are many more pages than the concise food menu.
I have not been to Sunda. The main reason I wanted to go to Aru is to try the pate-en-croute. I have never tasted it before, and I was curious and fascinated by the discipline and artistry displayed, after reading articles of the chef, Khanh Nguyen, making pate-en-croute during Melbourne's Covid lockdown last year.
I have mixed feelings after trying it. I have very strong ideas about what a bahn mi taste like - crispy bread, lots of refreshing, crunchy salad, meat, chili, mayo, pate. I don't really get those flavours eating the pate-en-croute. However, if I just accept that a pate-en-croute is simply just meat, pate, aspic (jelly) baked in pastry and decorated, then, yes, it is delicious. It is very meaty, with different texture, lots of creamy, savoury pate, and an intense flavour bomb in the aspic/jelly, served with a side of refreshing salad. Anyway, I am glad that Aru introduced this interesting dish to Melbournians.
The duck ham is salty and gamey, the flavours reminds me of the cured pork/duck/pork sausage that is served with slivers of young ginger during Chinese New Year in my household.
I like the duck sausage sanga (Bunnings style sausage on bread), but at $12 - hmmmmm.
The sourdough bread, studded with black (forbidden) rice has a very sticky, crispy crust, and is delicious with the spiced, foamy butter.
The claypot broken rice is simply divine - with lots and lots of crispy bits. Another favourite is the dry aged duck - crispy skin, perfumed, smoky duck meat cooked to perfection. The perfect accompaniment to these two dishes, for me, is the witlof - light, tangy and refreshing.
The smoked chicken with turmeric, ginger and lemon myrtle is another hit - delicate, smoky, just cooked breast meat.
The kaya jam parfait is perhaps my favourite of the dessert, playful - I just eat it like an eskimo pie but with kaya flavour (Malaysia style egg custard).
Probably the least favourite dish for me, is the tofu and cheese dessert - the texture is softer and lighter than a cheesecake but lacking the creaminess and richness of cheesecake, it is simply too tart for me.
L. L.
A stellar new restaurant from the chef behind Sunda. Well worth the trip out.
The service was a little slower than normal, but still very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The waitress apologised for the delay, explaining that like the rest of Melbourne they are understaffed - honestly, most of the time you can't tell, except for a bit of a wait at the door or to get the bill. That's how smoothly the front of house is moving.
The menu is interesting, and we have a front row seat to the fire action at the bar. Watching the chefs work is a nice counterpoint to dinner. With the social distancing in place, you get a cosy sense of privacy in the centre of a very busy, buzzing restaurant.
Stand-out dishes include the pate en croute, duck and a charming kaya dessert, but really, everything is good tonight.

Bites & Snacks - great appetizer and perfect to start with. The options to order more of your favorite bites is awesome. Mussels with toasted baguette was top of the league.
Small Plates - comes with 6 different options, I ordered torched salmon and palm sugar rice sourdough. Highly recommended if you are a bread person and the unique way of torching the edge of the salmon was fine and juicy.
Large Plates & Rice - i ordered the moreton bay bag (thenus), with the claypot brown rice. The native curry with the blistered tomato complement the thenus, the flavor just nice for the seafood and the sauce did not overkill it. Claypot brown rice definitely my favorite, the crispiness of the brown rice remind me of the local food from malaysia. It does feels like home.
Lastly, Desserts - due to my girlfriend and I are full from the food, we just ordered one dessert to share. We had the tofu cheese cake, the cheese cake were sort of creamy and light taste. If you love to south east asia tofu desserts, this tofu cheese cake is a must.
Great vibes and very lively, a place where you can celebrate with love ones and to enjoy authentic food. 👍🏻

Impeccable service, food served was well paced and staff were very knowledgeable about their menu. We enjoyed all the dishes served. My personal favourites are the rice noodles, kholbari, bahn mi pate & rice sourdough with cultured butter ( recommend keeping the leftover butter and spread that on the bahn mi pate or duck sausage sanga). The desserts were also delicious.
Reasonably priced for upmarket dining, and great ambiance.
Would recommend giving this place a go!

Dining at Aru is a truly memorable and delightful experience. Service was friendly and attentive. From welcoming smiles the minute we walked in, the efficient presentation of food as well as the topping up of our drinks including water, to the goodbyes at the end; this is a place that exemplifies genuine hospitality.
Food was fresh, treated with the utmost respect and attention to details. Waygu ox tongue, torched salmon, witlof or green papaya salad (must try), claypot broken rice (sensational), parfait, tapioca pudding; everything was delectable and tasty. Our highlight was the suckling pig platter. Succulent tender pork with crispy crunchy cracklings, served with extremely flavourful and complementary condiments; it's a culinary sensation that must be savoured. Words are simply inadequate to describe our appreciation of this highly limited piece de resistance. Do order it in advance when making your reservation if it's something up your alley.
Thank you Aru for everything. You will be highly recommended to our family and friends. We will definitely return.

First time dining and amazing experiences. Food and staff was on point.
Very affordable dining and highly recommended.

This is what I wrote to the restaurant when it asked for feedback:
First of all I think Google Maps is not very clear on your location, you might need to fix that. It points you into a laneway and if you type Aru and "start" you would never be given the address, so it would just direct you to a bunch of bins.
The service was fantastic, I really like friendliness of the staff. It's fine dining with a casualness that I liked. The ambience is great, we sat on the counter and watched the action and had some interaction with the chefs.
I think the price point can be slightly lower for the small bites and snacks but judging from how full your restaurant is, you are probably not worrying too much about this.
Your duck (mains) was fantastic. Just perfectly cooked with beautiful, crispy skin. I would order this every time I come here I think!
We started w bread, palm sugar and cultured butter was a bit flavourless... the butter was creamy but not smokey enough. And this thing is sticky, so rather than giving us the wet towels later for the sausage sanga, they should have given it to us now.
The duck sausage starters was solid. Really loved the flavour of the sausage, however the bread is a bit soggy and falling apart. Not really sold on the $12 price tag though. Nice touch with the wet towel though.
Our last dish was the witlof, pomelo sunrice lime, prawn oil and cured egg yolk. This is the dish that we were both quite disappointed about (Hence the 4*). I find the flavours of the dish didn't really match my expectations, it was a bit too sour, I can't really taste the prawn oil and the shaved egg yolk didn't do much. My dining partner didn't like the texture - it was too slimey/ slippery.
The cocktail (Anto?) was delicious and the Riesling by the glass we had was really good
Overall we had a good time and we have already decided what we want next time - the Moreton Bay Bugs and will definitely try the dessert!

We came here for dinner on Friday night and had a lovely time, food was excellent and staff was friendly and attentive. Food came out at a good pace and love the open kitchen, you get to see how the food is prepared. Will definitely come back to try out the other dishes 👍
Well done Team ARU!
步.
The dry age duck is just prefect
Great service
Really nice cocktails, must try
S. P.
Amazing experience. Highly recomend to try Dry Aged Duck, juicy, full of wood fried. Like this one most.
Pate en croute would be the second best. Thank you to enhance and introduce a super great dish from Vietnam
Crackling pork was a special dish however to skin not crunchy enough and pork have a pretty strong smelling.
A. g.
Incredible food and service, and an amazing wine list! The staff were very helpful with dietaries, and I got to have my first ever taste of dry aged duck--usually never gluten free. Will definitely be back, thank you for a great night :)
J. A.
Might just be the best dining experience I’ve ever had. Food was amazing. Not a single dish disappointed. Would definitely recommend everything, but especially the Duck Sausage Sanga.
g. c.
Although my dinner companion cancelled on me last minute I decided to go solo anyway. This does change your dinning experience. I was waited on by two very lovely waiters who showed me their personality and made me feel comfortable and welcomed. The food was delicious and they accommodated meals that were for sharing to be meals for one.
It was a lovely night with fantastic food, service and ambience.
Well worth the visit, I highly recommend.

One of the best restaurants in Melbourne. Went there last night with my date, the staff was incredibly nice and professional. The food was scrumptious loved every bit of it. The ambience, the seating arrangement, basically everything was worth it. Kudos to the staff who made the night perfect. Definitely going back there again.
E. C.
Food is delectable like I had at Sunda. Appreciate their own interpretation of Asian flavours. Dry aged duck is a must
D. C.
Absolutely wonderful experience, sorry there's only 5 stars, I'm happy to leave 10 stars down if there's a option. Lovely lovely lovely, if you ask me to bring out a con other than all the pros, booking for a seat would be the only thing might stop me comming back, have to wait 2 weeks for a dinner

New Gem
Fantastic food. Duck sausage sanga and pate en croute really ‘popped’. Cocktails had too many big ice cubes which filled up the short glass disproportionately. Overall a good dining experience.
C. -.
Amazing experience at Aru.
Firstly the venue and fit out is extremely welcoming and warm.
Staff were incredible. Especially good to see in a time when the hospo industry is struggling for staff. I found everyone to be friendly, attentive and knowledgeable.
Great wine list. Very good cocktails and a good selection of sake.
Onto the food. Nearly every dish hit a high note:
- the duck sausage sanga is delicious. Is it worth $16? Yes. I’d eat this everytime no questions asked
- grilled leek. Great flavours and leek was well cooked
- Moreton bay bug left a bit to be desired. Definitely the least impressive dish of the night.
- dry aged duck cooked to perfection
- Savoy cabbage was a very decent side
- spanner crab fried rice was nice. I’m not sure it’s worth $38 but it is exactly as the name suggests - fried rice with spanner crab and roe on top.
I will definitely be back
B. M.
The service, food, ambiance and overall experience was second to none. I'd been raving about Aru since my first visit in July to a girlfriend, and it more than lived up to the hype. The Mussels, Pate en Croute and Dry Aged Duck are absolutely incredible. Thanks for a beautiful evening, I'll be back!
V.
I love all the dishes here, especially the aged duck dish, it’s incredibly tasty. Great tasty food, beautiful ambience lighting, relax and comfortable seating, friendly happy faces serving you…what else can you ask for in a restaurant?
C. J.
Thoroughly enjoyed dinner at ARU, the service was outstanding, really enjoyed the experience sitting at the bar watching the chefs at work, and all of the food and cocktails were delicious. It’s very had to pick any favourites as genuinely all the food was such a high standard, but we both really enjoyed the oysters and the flavours of banh mi pate, great way to start.
J. B.
Came in for lunch and mostly had small plates to try a good selection from the menu. Food was delicious and beautifully plated. We had a few different cocktails, but the ones we ordered a second time were all consistent in taste and garnishes. Our server was very friendly and offered a few suggestions on drinks and dishes to try. Great experience all round
K. G.
Went here for my birthday celebration. All the dishes were delicious and well presented. A standout was definitely the duck!
The interior was well designed and created a pleasant atmosphere.
The staff were very attentive and friendly.
Will definitely come back to try the other items on the menu! 👏
L. W.
Beautiful meal. Glorious flavours, new combinations, seriously good, and a slick but friendly service. Excellent stylish cocktails too.
T.
It might be unusual to give five stars half way through the first meal but Aru is a beautiful restaurant with attentive service, excellent wine recommendation and mastery of technique and flavours.
T. P.
A relatively new place, as it closed up within a day due to the second lockdown. South East Asian inspired dishes, with flavours ramped up a notch from the typical SEA hawker fare we are used to. Interesting twists added from the use of local ingredients. Food prep is spot on, definitely a return is in my diary.
E. v.
Came here to try the $120 steak, slightly under seasoned although tasty, but not worth it at its price point. Hats off to the bar service, personal but not too invading and good recommendations. Great atmosphere. Would return just to sit at the bar and try their other food.
J. J.
We had a dinner and at first were a bit disappointed that they do not offer set menu like Sunda does. However, the manager was really open to our request and quickly arranged whats best for us to serve. The food was full of good surprises and the service was very attentive.
Our favorite ones were the rib eye and combined with the witlof and cabbage. Just YUM! I never thought I would pick cabbage as a side but it turned out to be one of my favorite dishes for the night.
The sourdough bread are also worth mentioning. The texture is stretchy and the flavour is so good.
The only thing that I wasn’t a fan of is probably the ambience. The music was a bit too loud and it made people to talk a bit louder. Would probably prefer a calmer choice of music.
All in all thanks Aru! Great experience!
M. M.
Holy 5but it was good. I had high expectations with the opening of this restaraunt and it exceeded it.
We had some of their new classics: Bunnings inspired duck sanga and pork terrine.
Sitting at the bar in the kitchen, seeing the Khanh and the crew do their thing is enjoyable experience
The next big thing in Melbourne is here.
S. G.
- Beautiful venue.
- Very accommodating, friendly and caring staff.
- Highly recommend this restaurant.
If I could give 5.5 stars 🌟 I would.
Thanks ARU

Love the food and the Cocktails. Great service.

Foods are decisions and staff are friendly. Smoked duke is excellent!

I am big fan of Sunda, and I expected as good as Sunda. And surprisingly it were as delicious as Sunda but cheaper prices and huge space.
And also If you seat on bar side, you can talk with chefs and they may explain some dishes if you want.
Great experience great people ❤️ happy day

Flavours of banh mi and the noodles were the highlight of our dinner

Wow!
Wow!
Bloody excellent food and service - Tess was a standout!

Unique ambience, beautifully designed great food. Waiters were proffessional though friendly

Staff was great, service was nice, food was lovely- except: we ordered a fish sort of dish and the fish tasted quite bitter, wasn’t a fan of that. :(

Honest review.. Me and my husband celebrated our 10yr Anniversary tonight at Aru Restaurant at 268 Little Collins Street. They knew our reservation and event and treated us like dear friends.. The food was exemplary and the service even better and was above reproach. If our night was made better it would have been because the staff was always attentive to our needs! We loved the constant smiles and eye contact while serving us!! This experience certainly made our 10yr event that ever so special. Many thanks, much love and appreciation to the staff and especially management who looked after us.
V. N.
Amazing service amazing food. Highly recommend the duck. I r8 8/8, this isn't a b8, I'm not you're m8.

My partner and I dined here for an early Valentines dinner and were disappointed after so much hype for Aru. For the price tag, the food was nice but nothing memorable. Our waiter was absolutely lovely but I found the sommeliers to be quite unhelpful and one in particular was weirdly dismissive of my partner not wanting another glass of wine ( just took the wine list and walked off without saying anything to return 10 minutes later and ask the same question). I really wanted to love this place but after giving it a go, won’t be going back.
