Comments of Flower Drum Restaurant Melbourne

I have always heard of this place as being highly rated for excellent Chinese food however never managed to pay a visit until we received a gift to dine here, and wow am I kicking myself for never trying this sooner!
As soon as you step into the premises, the staff are all so welcoming and attentive. I can only echo what other reviewers have said and agree the service is second to none. I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant where I haven't had to get the attention of staff.
And the food, wow! Everything was beautiful, we had the summer tasting banquet and we cannot fault any of the dishes. The coral trout was cooked to perfection, eye fillet was so tender and the veg was so simple yet wonderfully complimented the special fried rice and eye fillet.
Dessert could be selected from a wide range from crepe to ice cream to something more traditional like milk pudding. We were spoilt for choice! We went with the almond pudding and the baked chestnut crumble. The custard pudding in the bake was really nice and not too sweet.
Overall it was a wonderful night out, we will definitely be back and telling family and friends about this place.

The annual award winning 15 chefs hat restaurant lives up to its reputation. Fabulous environment for vivacious celebrations, superb food and friendly talented staff. Amazing crab, scallop and shrimp dumplings, stuffs crab shell, Jade tiger abalone and pepper eye fillet. Yummy.

Ordered the Chef's Signature Banquet (6 courses) with the matching wine menu. The courses were all prepared well and the wine went really nicely with each. The selection was well balanced with both sea food and steak being offered, topped with a fresh desert. I would say Flower Drum is erring on the side of being slightly too expensive for the offering, but is still an excellent dining experience. The atmosphere and staff were very hospitable.

Tried the Spring tasting banquet and it was delicious! There is a choice of 3 entrees 3 mains and 3 desserts and you can have as many from each category as you like, you just pay a set price per number of courses you have. We had the exceptional Peking duck (complete with animal decorations in the hoi sin sauce) the sauteed beef, crispy skin chicken with spicy salt. One of us has banana fritter and there were almond cookies and tea or coffee to finish. The only complaint l could make is that our tea and coffee didn't make an appearance with our cookies and by the time we realised it wasn't coming we had to leave. Otherwise this was a fabulous meal with the impeccable service Flower Drum is known for.

If you have money to blow, this is the place.(I surely don't, but it was my bday) I mean, it's a little cheekily overpriced but everything was premium quality and presented beautifully in a quick but well-timed manner. It was very theatrical too e.g Peking duck and Toffee Apple dessert.
If someone mentions Flower drum now, I'd recall their service and the feel of the room more than the actual food.
It's only because having eaten at too many Chinese restaurants, I've had better peking duck before(here, hardly any fat ratio) and had better Truffle fried rice, while also prefer my fried rice with "wok hei" aka breath of the wok. Both at half the price.
Only letdown was the Toffee Apple dessert with the apple still being hard. Was expecting it to be cooked a tad softer at least. Should've gotten banana fritter.
Overall, very experience-worthy!

Ordered the banquet and did not regret. Each course all had amazing hints of Asian flavours incorporated into each dish which gave me a new level in my tasting palate. The harmonious balance of umami, sweetness, saltiness and acidic was phenomenal. As someone from the Asian background I can proudly state that it was a great interpretation of asian fine dining.

This is Chinese food elevated to stratospheric heights. I had no idea Chinese food could be so exquisite. Do yourself a favour and visit , you won’t regret it

A iconic Melbourne restaurant. I don’t think I need to say much. From entering the restaurant, the experience at the front door, walking up the lovely red carpet on the stairs, being seated and then having great food with great wine.

I was just looking for a nice Chinese place to go in Melbourne with my friends. Searched “Chinese food Melbourne” and this came up.
I had no idea that this place was one of the most renowned restaurants in Melbourne.
After seeing the prices and the absolutely impeccable service it’s clear why it is a Melbourne Institution. The food was absolutely amazing, the wagyu beef was so soft it melted in your mouth, I just wanted more. I also loved the Mango dessert.
The service is like no other.
I would love to go back and order everything that I didn’t get to order.
To anyone that is complaining in the other reviews that this place is expensive, yes it might be but it is definitely worth it. You’re not only paying for the food, but for the service and everything else that comes with it.
When you go to a place like this, money doesn’t matter, just let your wallet be free!

Years ago, I had one of most memorable Cantonese dining experience in the world, however, second was a slightly missed the points in flavor, seasoning, presentation, service and its care. I had a lunch 4 course. Instead of full degustation though. I will go back for special occasion with special people.

We've been going to Flower Drum for more than 30 years. The food and service are always exceptional. Never had a bad meal. Our favourite is the baked crab shell, pearl meat and the best Peking duck in Australia.
G. F.
Impeccable for a high-end Chinese Cuisine meal, we greatly enjoyed the Autumn Tasting Menu and the wonderful attentive service throughout. Very decently priced for the calibre of the food, our highlight was the Abalone to start, followed by the Toothfish.
Slight criticism on the duck pancake course, the pancakes were pretty thick and doughy detracting from the succulent duck meat. Also with a choice of dessert to finish it is possible to make a wrong choice and finish with something that sounds good on paper but underwhelming on arrival.
Should have gone with the banana fritter - least you know that'll always be good!

A breath of Hong Kong food scene in the heart of Melbourne.
There are a few dishes that I invariably associate with Hong Kong and will always seek out without fail whenever I am in that great city - ginger milk pudding and egg tart. With the current travel restrictions, I am thankful that one of my favorite dessert is executed beautifully at Flower Drum - silky, wobbly, gingery sweet milk pudding. Sublime!. Thank you chef.
I also splurged on a whole Coral Trout, an exquisite sweet fish that is steamed perfectly. And one just had to admire the knife work of the thousand leave tofu - lightly warm and served with savory mushroom on spinach sauce.
The pancake for the Peking duck is warmed in front of you and wrapped by the waiter - it is good but I prefer mine to have more crispy, fragrant skin and less meat.
Lastly, a word on the service - yes, it is attentive.
T. N.
We visited as a group for lunch and ordered al la cart from the menu.
The food was delicious, freshly made, and authentic Cantonese cuisine.
The service and ambience is very good - one of the best I have been to so far in both Sydney and Melbourne for Cantonese cuisines. The cutlery with silverware stand is very rare to see nowadays!
The dishes were served individually - come and enjoy a good time, don’t rush it!

Had the Chefs Signature Banquet. Excellent food, service and wine pairing was well done too. Not cheap but well worth it.

A "must try" Melbourne institution that is famous for its fresh Cantonese style dishes. If you don't know what to order or can't decide, just ask your wait staff and they will organise for you. The wine list here is extensive and if your pockets are deep and you feel like getting a special bottle, we'll, chances are they will have something to match your food.
S. S.
Service was second to none. Warmly welcomed and acknowledged by staff, including those we walked by on the way to our table.
Extensive wine list.
We originally thought we would have a banquet but then decided against it as we were not super hungry.
Soup followed by mains with rice was a great choice.
We enjoyed watching the many staff attend to all dinner guests. Empty plates and glasses quickly whisked away, while others took pride in serving dishes to the tables.
We will be back to dine again.

Week 3 in the extended Stage 4 lockdown saw us dine in at home at Flower Drum, thanks again to Providoor 🙏🏻.
Flower Drum serves up authentic Cantonese food. Although the menu was limited by eating this way we had lots of good choices.
We enjoyed the food, but unlike our other Providoor experiences, we were unable to get close to the presentation images on the website. There were two main reasons for this. Firstly, some were a hard to handle and plate up and we lacked the skills. Secondly, the food didn’t look the same. This might have been because we were dining at home but some of the food was different in size, texture and the balance of ingredients.
A lot of effort was put in by the Flower Drum team to make the occasion special. Every meal ingredient was packaged and labelled clearly and they provided an individual preparation sheet for each serve.

2nd time here. It is and will be my go to place for any special anniversary or occasion.
Delicious food. Attentive service. Price is well if it is worth it then it is affordable.

I've always wanted to try the proclaimed "best Chinese restaurant Melbourne", and I finally did it tonight. What I can say is - I'm not disappointed, and I can see why this restaurants wins so many accolades and awards. The food and service is simply amazing. We ordered a few dishes to share, and each one of them were marvellous. This place well deserves a 5 star and I would certainly be back.
R. R.
You will experience a welcome at the Flower Drum such as you have never enjoyed before.
Your dinner is an event, with great food and a killer wine list.
S. P.
Amazing dinner experience. Staffs are super nice and helpful. Really love it
D. N.
DO: Everything on the menu that you can afford. If you have no idea do the banquet or better yet, have a chat to the waiters and they'll sort you out.
DON'T: Forget the wine list.
TIP: There are a lot of "off menu" items. The Neil Perry crab Noodle is my fave. Ask the Waiters and say hello to the handsome Jason, the owner of Flower Drum
J. J.
One of the best Asian restaurant in Melbourne. Highly recommend anyone to try their live seafood, price is on the expensive side but that's expected at an award winning restaurant.
Service is up the level as well with very knowledgeable and polite waiters.
Wide variety of good wine is also available.
Finally booking is recommended as they do tend to be booked out for the night.
E. K.
One of the oldest and most expensive Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. They have consistently listed in the top restaurants in Victoria. The dishes are cooked perfectly in a traditional method and the service is top notch. The seafood are fresh and the pork chop is soft.
Food - 9
Service - 10
Vibe - 9
Price - $$$$$

I loved their service. They took very less time to serve the food on my table. The waiter was really good and friendly. When I tasted the food it was just mind-blowing. This restaurant is worth writing feedback. The ambience is also very chilled and relaxed. You will love the food here as well as the place. I strongly suggest everyone trying out this restaurant.

I wanted to go here for so long and I ended up coming with work colleagues. They were so great - a big round table for our party of 12, with a lazy Susan in the middle. They catered for all our dietary requirements and allowed everyone to order as required. I had the salmon, steak and fried ice cream from the $65 summer menu. Was so tasty! Loved finishing off with tea and those yummy almond biscuits! Maybe the best salmon I’ve ever had. It was an expensive meal, but definitely perfect for a special occasion.
N. C.
Excellent service from the minute you walk in. Yes, dishes can be quite expensive ($4.50 per one (1) pan-fried dumpling or Xiao Long Bao), but it's all worth it. My dad rates the pork pan-fried dumplings among the best he's ever had. That's saying something. Good drinks list as well. If you're after a special event, cross this off your bucket list.
K. D.
For fine dining Cantonese cuisine, Flower Drum is really lovely. The service is exceptional and cannot be faulted! ...but if you're looking for your usual Cantonese yum cha restaurant, you probably want to go elsewhere.
C. F.
What a night....What an experience!
From the moment you step foot at the front door you know it's going to be great. The young doorman opens the door for you with a warm welcome and guides you to the lift. Once the door slides opens the wonderful staff are there to take our coats, and soaking umbrellas from the rain... that had not dampened our night at all.
We are among the first dinners to arrive (and the last to leave) we are taken to our seats in the middle dining area of the restaurant. The decor is simple yet elegant, the table set beautifully. Our waiter Derek and the Maître d quickly show us the beverage list. By this time of course, the girls had their handbags over the back of their chairs. Because you know, that's where they go right?? No! They both got a small table for their bags to rest on. How amazing is that!
A few weeks ago when we made the reservation, we decided on having the Chef's signature banquet. Each dish is paired with a wine, so that is 5 different wines. And we can tell you that each one was amazing, as was every dish. From the very first mouthful til the very last. The serving size is exactly right. The tastes and textures spot on.
Yes, it is expensive (you don't have to have the Chef's signature banquet though, their menu is extensive)...But it is so well worth the experience. The service is outstanding, which makes it even more well worth it. Great food and great service, the two go hand in hand.
Will we go back again?....You better believe it!!!
K. S. T.
Great service. Delicious food, we tried about 12 different dishes over 2 nights. Absolutely AMAZING Peking Duck pancakes!
K. Y.
Excellent Chinese cuisines with terrific environment and friendly and professional staff.
R. P.
Nice upmarket place. Good service, attentive staff. Food choices is good. Love the lotus leaf rice, it has duck, yam, egg, mushrooms and other ingredients which is lovely.
The Peking duck I dont quite like it. I prefer the ones we get in Singapore where the skin is crispy and the wrap isn’t so soft.
Place is abit different from normal chinese restaurant as most items on the menu is served individually instead of group sharing. It’s a nice touch but just be prepared to fork out cash :)
Overall, I would come again versus other menus I tried in Melbourne.
J. C.
Excellent Cantonese restaurant with very good service. Our waiter, Andy was very courteous and patient with our 2 noisy kids, and was very helpful in suggesting orders for our kids and family.
I have eaten in many chinese restaurants all over the world, and quality of service, dedication and professionalism expressed by their staff and especially Andy tops them all.
The food was also very good.
Their Roast Duck was one of the best I have tried, and perhaps on par with the famous London Fat Duck.
Also excellent was their Beef rice noodles.
I would definitely go back to eat there everytime I visit Melbourne, and would recommend my friends to as well.
S. C.
I agree it's overpriced but you're paying for the service. Regarding food, I loved the Peking duck because it was prepared differently. I can just eat a whole plate of it. The fish and beef were ok. Nothing special. The fried rice was good because it wasn't salty, just enough to bring out the crab flavor.
J. L.
Probably the best fine dining Cantonese / Hong Kong style restaurant that I've ever been. In the heart of China Town, it remains classy and it is almost like another world out there.
Excellent services start at the doorway, where they'd show you the lift and even press the button for you (it's just 1 level up, you could've taken the stairs), and they look after you almost every steps to the table, until you finished - that's 2 hours later for mines. They give you enough attention, but leave you plenty of privacy to chat / enjoy the meal.
Food is fantastic. Everything is carefully crafted and the attention to detail is unbelievable for a Cantonese restaurant. Take your time, You will need to relax and enjoy every mouthful leisurely. Do not come if you expect an express lunch in 30 mins.
I've fallen in love with this restaurant.....
A. S.
If you're looking for the best Chinese fine dining experience, then this is the place to go. Booking is required because they are busy everyday. Besides beautiful food, they also have many great wine and spirits.
J. G.
We went here for lunch in a private room and were not disappointed. Warm greeting on arrival and great service throughout. Very attentive staff and really great food. Wines served with lunch were also great. The Chardonay was particularly very good. Would definitely recommend.

Absolutely amazing restaurant. The best combination of delicious, beautifully presented food, oustanding service and impressive athmosphere. What an incredible experience. The food was stunning, light and very tasty.Everything was working so well. The waiters ( to name few Rex,John,Steve,Jefrey and Mgr Wen,were really fantastic. They were so attentive and moved like nindjas, reading your mind, what you desired and how it needed to be done perfectly. There was a last minute change in some of the food preferences and they accommodated it incredibly well with no fuss, extremely efficiently with finess. I love the chic, elegant vibe that was set even from the entering the room. They managed to cover 8 course dinner for 80 people seamlessly. I loved every minute of this great evening.I would hugely recommend it as a MUST go FOOD destination and you have to try this sublime Asian culinary extravaganza.
J. A.
From the ease with which their friendly staff help you find a booking by phone or email, to the quiet elegant surrounds with so much wonderful space between tables, that creates such a grand feel, to the attentive and knowledgeable staff that anticipate your every need, to the most exquisite Chinese delicacies and a wine list to match, this is Melbourne's grand, special and unique dining experience.
D. F.
Food:Beautiful food

Hands down the best Chinese restaurant around and probably one of the best places I have been to. Definitely worth checking out
J. C.
One of the best Chinese restaurants in Australia. Ordered the set course and the food is delicious and beautifully presented. The service is top notch. Reservation is highly recommended. Parking might be hard to find.
G. M.
After so many years away from Melbourne, finally I was back there again. Flower Drum has always been good, a place where you won't find unpleasant surprises. Our highlights that night were baked crab shells, peking duck, sautéed pearl meat, double boiled soup, and braised wallabies.
L. P.
Loved my first dinner at FD it was definitely a resturant to go to in Melbourne for a fine dining Cantonese Chinese food experience, great atmosphere, drinks and service. Food Summer Tasting Banquet was enjoyable, especially liked the plating for the peaking duck pancake. I'll definitely return in the near future thank you.
S. E.
It's not possible to overstate how good this restaurant is. Stunning food and impeccable service in a beautiful and spacious dining room.
J. S.
That's was absolutely fantastic experience

Wow what a great restaurant!Late lunch today and could not fault food, wine and service 10/10.Seafood,land and beef all sensational matched by 10 YO Rockford Riesling 😋.
Will be back ASAP.

Wow! What an amazing restaurant, beautiful service and exceptional food! This has to be the best restaurant, food and service wise that I've experienced in Melbourne! I booked this for my Mum's milestone birthday. Despite frequent (some might say painful!) number of enquiries (on my behalf) the online service was always super polite and professional. Arriving at the venue, my already high expectations were exceeded! The table was set with flowers due to my Mum's birthday, the waiters were extremely solicitous, super friendly and helpful. They taught my 10 year nephew how to use chopsticks correctly, topped up any empty wineglasses, and were always available. Adding to the amazing service, the food was exceptional!! Well done Flower Drum, no wonder you are a Melbourne institution!!
I. L.
Excellent service from the moment you enter until you leave. This is a very classy and elegant venue, where one can bring their most esteemed guests or for a memorable occasion. Very pricey though, and while the food is good it’s not the best Chinese I ever had.
D.
Although the price is high, Flower Drum delivers great fresh Chinese food matched with attentive service. I had the signature 5 course chef lunch and left absolutely satisfied and full.
J. K.
Food was tasty. Decent wait between each course though, which made it a very long night. Staff are very attentive.
D. S.
We recently visited this high-end iconic restaurant.
At first I was advised that there's no option of going vegetarian with the Chef's Signature Banquet however seconds later the lovely wait staff informed me that he'll happily work out a vegetarian feast and his exact words were "Trust me with the dishes"! How could I not.
What came out is the feast I'll always remember, one after another amazing plate of food which ticked all the 3 senses. Every dish was the vegetarian version of meat dishes on the menu. Highly impressive!!
So glad I trusted the staff because I can't wait to visit again. It was truly an amazing experience.
G. K.
Absolutely amazing. Excellent service, delicious food and impeccable waiters. This place is one of the best Melbourne restaurants and it's not a surprise our organization selects this for our yearly Christmas lunch.
The vegetarian options are enormous and I never had a lack of choice. The food presentation was superb and I had to leave part of my main as I was too full.
5 star service, 5 star food, 5 star presentation and 5 star prices. Loved everything about this restaurant
B. J.
My wife and I had the Chef’s Banquet and wine pairing. It burnt a hole through my wallet, but it was definitely worth the experience.
B. M.
Forever and a day and still the best Chinese / Cantonese food in Melbourne. Yes it’s decor is old, but it’s a classic! Service phenomenal and Barney by far the best host we’ve had over the past 20 years. They always go the extra mile if it’s your birthday. All food here is amazing and unless you drink alcohol the price is well worth it!
M. B.
The Flower Drum truly lives up to its legend. For my wife's birthday dinner I decided to splash out. The attention from the waiters was unfaltering. We started with glasses of Dom Perignon. We weren't hungry enough for the six course banquet, but didn't want to settle for the four course banquet - so the maitre 'd suggested we split a couple of items from the six course menu - that way we can still sample everything. Perfect solution. The food was absolutely delicious - best Peking duck I've ever had. And in honour of my wife's birthday the waiter decorated a platter himself and brought it out with a candle and sang happy birthday to her. At the end of the night my wife placed some almond cookies in her purse to tske home, the waiter noticed and filled a takeaway box with cookies and put it in a paper carrying bag for her. Yes, it's expensive - but worth every dollar.
A. G.
Been going there for so many year's and has never let me down, one of the best Chinese restaurants in the world, amazing high quality food, fantastic wine selection and award winning service with friendly knowledgeable staff, on the expensive side but highly recommended
S. M.
Amazing ambience with delicious fine Chinese cuisine.Every part of the menu was delicious and executed to perfection. We started with a baked crub shell ,scallops in spicy salt and wok fried Glacier 51 Patagonian toothfish with Seasonal Soy.What a start? The taste was just sublime. For main we had Peking duck ,Chingkiang pork chops and Grass-fed Black Angus eye fillet with Suchuan sauce served with seasonal vegetables and special fried rice. The beef was cooked perfectly and served with such an elegance. For desert we indulged on mango crepes and strawberries with ice cream. The wine selection did not disappointed.Highly recommend this place. We will be back again very soon. The service was fast ,precise and well orkestrated. There was not a single thing I could faulted that evening.Thank you.
A. B.
Outstanding service, delicious food and I now know why it's considered one of the best restaurants in Melb! Would happily return! 🌟
M. T.
What a great dining experience! The service is amazing Nd the good is divine ! We ordered the pearl oyster to start and then the Peking duck, rice and streak strips cooks to perfection ! We throughly enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere will definitely be back! I booked online so easy !
A. L.
Great food and exceptional service. The difference between this and your standard dining experience is very noticeable. A part of Melbourne's culture.
A. M.
Flower Drum you are amazing! Thank you to Jason and the team for looking after us for our 2nd year birthday in business. 2020 has been a crazy one but to finish the year hitting goals we didn't think would happen due to covid and being able to share all that tonight was a blessing. We'll be back very soon! 5 stars for food and service x
R.
The food is really nice but it is also super expensive. Most of the food choices don't make full either
H. S.
Been contemplating coming here for years, just wasn't sure about the pricing. But this weekend just decided to give it ago. I would simply say, we left highly impressed and would definitely return. The service was superb! Every staff member was polite and very attentive. Every tea cup, wine and water glass was always topped up in a heartbeat. The wine list was extensive and tailored to match all requirements. For our meal we requested suggestions and we're not disappointed. They adjusted the size of the dishes to suit our requirements which was a pleasant experience and allowed us to try multiple dishes. The Peking duck is definitely a must have. Tommy and Jackie, Thank you so much for your suggestions and service. We will see you soon again. It just made our night out perfect!

I have a very western palette, and despite this there are multiple options available that I find delicious. My wife has a very eastern palette and she is in heaven when we go here. For any particular dish, there may be other Chinese restaurants that do it better, but overall the food quality is second to none, the service amazing, and the atmosphere exceptional.
M. S.
Everything about this fine dining restaurant is first class, they do everything so well. From the moment you arrive, you know you are in for a special one off occasion and we were not disappointed. The service, the food and the overall feel of the restaurant cannot be faulted, it was a joy to attend. For anyone wanting to celebrate a special occasion, then this is the place to go to. As you would expect, you pay a premium for such a dining experience but it is worth it.
P.
Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. It was an experience to dine here. Everything that I had tried .. mind blowing. I would come back here again in a heartbeat. Highly recommended
S. L.
Very good Chinese food. Service is extremely efficient and fast. Nice servers.
G. B.
Good Chinese food turned up in quality and service. Excellent flavours, Textures and Quality supported with great service.
H. H.
An incredible experience each time. The quality, preparation and presentation is second to none.
C.
Literally the best steak I've ever tasted in my life. Hands down the best Chinese place in Melbourne! It was my birthday and they brought out a carved swan made out of green apple! There was a sparkler and plum sauce that said happy birthday. There were some baked cookies on the side too! These guys have an absolute passion of their craft and they've earned my respect. I'm looking forward to coming back soon!

A special night celebrating Chinese New Year 🧧 with a lion dance and a fabulous banquet of delicious food 🌸🥁❤️❤️❤️
J. L.
Every dish and every detail is suprising!Best lamb in 2018 and 2019.
B. L.
Had a dinner their. Staff is nice and helpful.
C. R.
Best Peking duck in Victoria, or anywhere. Crispy garlic pork rib was a surprise, perfectly cooked, and fried rice was as good. Excellent service, beautiful and spacious settings, top up by lovely fresh flowers arrangements. Right choice to celebrate birthdays or special occasions. Restaurant can arrange birthday cake, flowers, etc. Best service.
Y.
Had lunch with my partner at Flower Drum and absolutely loved it. Service is very attentive, not rushing you through the courses at all (which I find happens a lot in Melbourne especially after the lockdowns). Food is fresh and prepared very very well. Compliments to the staff here, front and back!
S. P.
Superb food, service and staff. Plush and quiet environment and very reasonable prices. Highly recommended!
B. C.
Better than 5 stars. Amazingly tasty Chinese food. Fresh, fresh, fresh! Excellent service.
M. B.
Great Peking duck, rest of the food was good, but there is better in Melbourne and the cost is exorbitant, seriously Wagyu beef $700 a kilo, and a single dumpling from $4.50 ! I mean I understand it’s a Melbourne institution but there is some serious competition around unlike the 70’s and 80’s, the service was over the top until it was time for the cheque, just relax a little guys. Love the vintage telecom payphone though!
A.
We like the atmosphere here, make us feel like royals. The restaurant is beautiful and elegant. The foods are real delicious. Staffs are friendly and well-trained to serve customers. However the prices are way too expensive for what the foods really are: very small portions (real small). You should expect to spend at least about $40 each person to have a full belly :) (or not?) I’d say it’s worth it just to try out the royal space and the delicious (but not unique) foods here. I recommend to go as a group so maybe it’ll save your budget even just a bit.
I. R.
4.5 service was better than food. Good wine list. A bit over price compare to others 2hats.
P. K.
Top service ‘5*’, top food, amazing black truffle fried rice, duck pancakes ‘YUM!’ and an amazingly large bill! We took the stairs on he way out to work off the full tummies.

A big thank you to Peter who was more than willing to accomodate such a special occasion. The food was amazing with some courses being prepared right in front of you with great care and professionalism. We were constantly 'wowing' just at the sight of how they were preparing all the food.

I had a great dinner and overall experience at Flower Drum. Staff were all very professional and welcoming, always ready to provide you with additional information and recommendations, without being intense at all. I had the Seafood Soup Dumpling and the Peking Duck wraps. Delicious and perfectly presented both! They have a diverse list of wines available to pair with your choice of food. The restaurant is clearly more expensive than others in the area, but I believe the quality of service and food - and the experience! - fully justify the difference.
B. O.
The food is absolutely delicious and prepared with care and professionalism and of fresh ingredients. The place itself is great and has a strong traditional design in it and matches the high quality service and food. The service, as usual, was impecable. It is perfect for special occasions and I highly recommend it.
D.
Great experience but felt rushed due to their two sittings. Tried to order the most expensive banquet but was told we were too late.... We got there 10mins after first sitting opened (we booked). Very strange service for how extremely expensive it is.
K. T.
Great food and service. I was impressed by the creative presentation of Peking duck
S. H.
Anything less than 5 stars for this place is a total lie.
I'm totally speechless, these guys are on another level!
N. S.

We had a great time. Very good and friendly service . Nothing is to much. And the food is just beautiful. Well worth going. Highly recommend it to everyone.
S. B.
A professional team providing the very best from greeting to service to fine dining to best wishes as you leave each and every time. Did I mention the wine list!! Thank you for another wonderful gourmet evening...
M. “. A.
Simply one of the most renowned Chinese restaurants in Australia.
Delicious delicacies and professional customer service.
Unbelievably enjoyable time.
G. B.
Wonderful food that takes Chinese cuisine to a whole other level. The presentation is impeccable. Service and ambience is outstanding. The wine list is fascinating and may require a bank loan, but we enjoyed the cheapest bottle of wine at around $80. A fabulous experience, and many thanks to our waiter Barry who went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our lunch.
A.
Pricey, but worth every cent. Flawless experience, best service I've seen in Melbourne. Expansive wine list. Food is incredible. Can't fault anything. Will definitely going back soon.
J. R.
Had the toffee apple dessert. Loved it. Staff are super friendly. I also love their broth.
T. L.
Amazing service with attention to detail which is flawless. They will notice if you're left handed and rearrange your cutlery setting before you mention or do it yourself! Egg roll, duck, seafood, dim sum you just cant beat. Very accommodating staff will even create you something if you so desire. I enjoy the outdated decor and surroundings, keeps a very classy feel to the restaurant.
J. B.
Sophisticated red carpet restaurant, great service with a constant attention for the customers. The food was outstanding, faultless. From the simple spring rolls to the wild barramundi noodles, everything was simply the best dishes ever tried before in a Chinese restaurant. Obviously some items are really expensive,
R. S.
Outstanding experience. Very well-staffed with friendly and attentive service throughout the night. Great ambience. We let the chef choose all of our food (a surprise banquet) and absolute didn't regret it. Our only request was to include the Peking Duck, which was a good choice. Particularly impressed with the unique sauce artwork on every plate!
W. C. (.
Lovely place with great food. Fantastic services.
J. P.
Incredibly tasty traditional Chinese food. We had their signature banquet. Dishes were well presented. Service was great, as was the atmosphere. Perfect place to celebrate that special occasion, or just to have great meal.
f. F.
Flower Drum absolutely Devine!!. Thank you so much Derek for your amazing service. My mum had an amazing 70th birthday. Food was absolutely devine, compliments to the chefs Certainly an experience we wont forget..
Thank you for making it a day to remember
D. M.
As good a a Chinese food, service and restaurant can get. Only improvement I see would be to the dated decor. Best Wonton soup I've ever had!
E. W.
Superb food and ambience. Prices are "in the stratosphere", but since this was a client function, I was delighted to attend.

Food:
I shouldn't have ordered the chicken fried rice but I was really craving some rice. The chicken in the chicken fried rice was excellent - flavourful, fragrant and just tasted oh so good! The fried rice itself was also really good and had a slight coconut taste to it that distinguishes it as a Thai fried rice dish. Although the dish that I ordered was good and did a really good job in filling me up, I don't really find it really special. It didn't stand out too much from other fried rice dishes other than the fact that the chicken was exceptionally well done.
Ambiance:
Restaurant was nicely decorated and gave off a relaxing ambiance. It was almost like eating at a spa actually, given the Buddha themed decor, wooden furniture and warm coloured accents.
Cleanliness:
Clean restaurant and facilities.
Staff:
Friendly and accommodating staff. I appreciate the good service and the fact that my water glass was constantly being filled.
Would I come here again? Yes, but next time for one of their curry dishes.
J. T.
Excellent quality modern (western) style Chinese, good wine list
L. c.
Been here several times and the food never disappoints. Love the ambience and level of service. Would visit again
J. M.
This was our fourth visit to Flower Drum Chinese Restaurant in Melbourne’s Chinatown and we are absolutely in awe of the food and service. The staff are nothing but professional and friendly which adds to the complete enjoyment of dining here. The food, which is described in easy to understand terms, is superb. The staff can of course help with your choices and suggest the amount of dishes you may be able to eat.
B. W.
This place lives up to the hype! Food is exquisite, service customised to each individual. I liked how each table is quite far from each other, so there is plenty of privacy. Vegetarians would not miss out. The chef made special dishes that are comparable to the non-vegetarians on the same table, and everyone was very happy.
A. L.
The place to go to get Australia's best service. Heaven
S. G. B.
Fine Chinese dining. Excellent service.
C. P.
Nice place,The food was ok but a bit too salty for me.
K. C.
Went to Flower Drum for the first time and the hype is real. Greeted at the entry by the doorman then again as we exited the lift. The atmosphere was gentle and formal wrapped together. From there the whole experience was to remember. Firstly the drinks menu then once we'd ordered the meal menu came. Everything flowed smoothly. You must have the lamb spring rolls (with gravy). The Peking Duck is prepared and served at the table and Louis (our waiter) made impressions of a duck, cat and a crab with the sauce (very Instagram worthy).
N. K.
Amazing food and very professional service. Really enjoyed the food. Heaps of wine selection. Ko

On our second visit to Flower Drum we took and important guest and his friend, and we were NOT disappointed at all. Our guests, who have travelled extensively, are Melbournites who had never gone to Flower Drum - always wanting too. Therefore they anticipated the meal and experience. Rather than make choices which we are comfortable doing, we asked our main server to choose a complete menu for us. Great idea. Started with dumplings that were so delicate and scrumptious. Scallops barely seared. ended with duck breast in thin, perfect 'pancake'. the four of us shared 2 desserts and left totally overwhelmed by the experience.
C. H.
Excellent service, delicious food. Pretty good price for the fine dining experience! I had the 2 course autumn tasting lunch which was $45. The first course was very small (duck pancakes) but delicious! And the second (crispy chicken) was much more substantial and also delicious.
Highly recommend
M. Z.
What an outstanding restaurant. Staff were exceptional and very attentive, it's like you have your own personal chefs. Food was fantastic and there was no delay in getting it to your table. If you want to treat yourself, this place is amazing.
D. L.
Fantastic experience at the Flower Drum. Excellent ambience and great service. Had our personal waiter Derek who did an exceptional job serving our meals. Could not fault the experience overall. The chef Keong even came out to ensure the food was top notch and personally stood by every dish he made. Derek even kept the children entertained throughout the night. Just a great night overall made even better with 10 out of 10 service. Definitely set the benchmark for Chinese cuisine and worth every dollar
J. P.
Definitely one of the best in town. Delicious food, great service, perfect ambience. Would definitely recommend. Do try the crispy skin fried chicken , chicken dim sums and fried ice cream - it was a roller coaster of flavours.
D.
A great dining experience! The waiter over heard my wife saying she don’t eat shallot and bring to her the next Beijing duck roll without it. There are always waiters around when you need them. The best service we have received in Asian restaurants! Will certainly go back again!
W. S.

My favourite restaurant for nearly 20 years. The service is impeccable and the attention to detail taken during the serving of all dishes is fantastic. Barry, Raymond, Tommy & Bill are all superstars who have become friends over the years and are no longer just wait staff. Can't wait to go back in a few weeks 🍽️😋
A. P.
All the dishes we ordered were exceptional!
They all have a very good combination of spices that greatly enhance the flavor without overpowering itself.
Great service, nice environment.
Most likely will come back to this place :)
L. K.
I look forward to the day when I can return! I spent a special birthday with a small party of family and friends, and we enjoyed the winter tasting menu (which was absolutely delicious - could not fault a morsel). The service was impeccable - such a well oiled machine. The staff were incredible, funny, warm, welcoming, there when you needed, in the background for privacy, but there again in the blink of an eye. The talented staff serving tableside were entertaining and creative, and the care and attention was very much appreciated. Thank you very much to all the team including Benny and Jeffrey!
C. R.
Loved Flower drum. Amazing food!!
Loved - The sweet and sour pork chops.
Black truffle fried rice was my dish of the day!!
The only thing better than the food, was the service. Attention to details was amazing!!
From food being served to you, to green teas being topped up.
Most impressive was they placed my cutlery on right side to suit me( I am left handed and almost swapped my knife and fork, only to realize it was in the right place) .
Highly recommend and will be back!!
Loved The theatrics with My toffee apple dessert too!
V. P.
Words cannot describe the experience.
A must for food connoseurs.
E. L.
Had an amazing night with my boyfriend. Staffs were really friendly, professional and very knowledgeable about the menu. The cooked of steak was literally perfect. Can’t wait to come again.
j. W.
Beautiful place and atmosphere . Food is also in good stardard. The steam fish , abalone with noddle, crab in shell are impressive. Lobster with noodle is fine. The dessert of red bean soup could be better.
C. O.
Delicious food, Polite, Honest and Patient staff, and Brilliant decoration. This would have to be my favourite Chinese restaurant. The fillet fish and Wagu steak would be my favourite but everything was amazing. Couldn’t fault it at all. Definitely Recommend this place.
V. F.
Food is fantastic. Service is good
J.
Food is great. It's not cheap. Main reason only 3 stars , had to ask 3 times for my bill, left waiting for my receipt for over 10 mins and eventually had to walk up to reception area to get it.
Maybe too many staff, not all realising what each other is doing!
But great food for sure. Circa 60 per head on a banquet.
N. B.
The best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne (and perhaps Australia, certainly better than Jade Temple in Sydney). Between exquisitely prepared traditional dishes, top notch ingredients and excellent service it is hard to fault. It is mostly traditional food however recently some additions to the menu have included traditionally prepared dishes using Australian native ingredients, which works surprisingly well. And lastly, a strong wine list is icing on the cake!
J. B.
Nothing to fault from start to finish.
Impeccable fine dining and exceptional service.
First time visit. Last munute birthday booking for two.
Staff were excellent in their reccomendations of both the specials and the wine list.
D. T.
Fresh steamed dumplings and buns came with authentic taste and texture, also friendly services.
W. J.
The Flower Drum has rightly earned its mantle as Melbourne's Premier Cantonese Restaurant. We had an amazing night, with the most delicious Chinese food I have eaten outside of Asia.
Yes, the whole thing is dated and with a touch or faded glamour, but honestly, it would be sad if they changed, that is all part of the experience. edgy decor and cuisine are so not the point. Deliciousness and flawless service are so much more valuable and rare.
I went with friends who had been many times before, yet it was my first. They saw their favourite waiter working another section, beckoned him over, asked if he could be our waiter... and flawlessly, seamlessly, he was from that moment on- no question, no interruption to service.
Not many places earn the designation 'Melbourne institution' but this is certainly one of them.
K. B.
Went to eat alone, and as an Italian I found some taste that are missing from other Italian restaurants. From amazing starters to tasty pasta and finish with a house-dessert and a glass of limoncello.. couldn't ask better
Add to this professional and caring staff!

Nice dining experience. Service was great. Food was excellent. We had a 3 course summer banquet during Saturday Lunch, the service was excellent, wait time in-between meals was not excessive nor were we complaining but to our surprise the waiter had apologized to us and offered us a discount and a complimentary dessert. Will definitely be back.
S. V.
Amazing Chinese food. Loved the presentation. Best Peking duck ever had. Also tasty crab baked in shell. Had a great time with family, will definitely visit again to try other dishes.
R. D.
This restaurant was really good looking and the service was very good. We ordered Singapore Chilli Crab for 3 people. When I have ordered crab in good restaurants previously, the staff bring the crab out for the customer to see and then the dish comes out. Here, there was no showing of the live crab and the cooked dish was brought out. The flavour was lovely but one had to continue spitting out very small chips of shell with every mouthful. A most unpleasant overcooked dish, at an expensive price. The flesh was attached to the shell and unable to be extricated. Got a couple at the markets and cooked them at home - delicious!
U. Y.
One of the best restaurants hands down will not eat cantonese/Chinese food elsewhere. Been a loyal customer for 5 years now
R. U.
A fabulous selection of Asian dishes available; extremely efficient and friendly service; reasonably priced considering this is fine-dining; you get what you pay for! Degustation menu is available. Strongly advise making a reservation as you might be left disappointed should you try your luck and just turn up. The only drawback is the extreme lack of car parking available. Certainly worth a visit! Enjoy!
D. D.
Impeccable place. Food is amazing have been eating here for many years.
The manager Simon is the greatest host and staff always tentative.
Good value for location and restaurant environment. Recommend for functions as its a great space...
G. T.
The food was divine; the service impeccable and the atmosphere lovely. The food just seemed to melt in your mouth. Fantastic experience for birthday last week. I would recommend to anyone, especially for a special occasion if you even remotely like Chinese food. Gracie
L. F.
I have been to the Flower Drum several times before and have had nothing but great experiences.
Last evening was disappointing. We ordered the Autumn Tasting Banquet which one would expect to be straightforward enough- it was not. Our wine was ordered and arrived but no food. After around half an our waiter brought some cashew nuts to have with our wine- still no abalone. Some time later we were given some bbq pork ,( “on the house”) .Our ordered menu did eventually materialise, but the evening had been somewhat spoiled.
I have no complaints about our waiter or our food- just wondering what happened in the kitchen. We will probably not be back.
M. T.
Absolutely superb the food ambiance and very attentive staff will definitely be back
A. -. L.
Exceptional quality, service and atmosphere. Absolutely enjoyed every mouth full. The best Chinese I've had in years. Next dining experience will be the 6 course banquet with matching wine.
D. K.
Aparently this one is the most famous Cantonese seafood restaurant in Australia. They are famous for their delicious Cantonese cuisine and exceptional service, their service was great but the ambience did not reflect on their price. Overall a great experience!
s. s.
Excellent service from the moment you enter until you leave. This is a very classy and elegant venue, where one can bring their most esteemed guests or for a memorable occasion. Very pricey though, and while the food is good it’s not the best Chinese I ever had.
M. B.
Pricing is relatively lower as compared to other award-winning restaurants in the area. Staff are polite and attentive. Food is amazing, we really enjoyed their duck and chicken skin.
R. F.
Had the most amazing meal here for my birthday. Food was spectacular, service was impeccable, everything was perfect!
S. W.
I wish I could rate this place 10 stars.
The food was amazing. Some limited options for adventurous kids. The staff and service were impeccable, without flaws. The prices are outrageous and not value for money if you want more for less. However I would rather a smaller, stellar, perfect plate of food than a cheap mediocre meal that over flows the plate. Wish I lived closer to try more things on the menu. Loved it! Thank you Flower Drum.

Best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. Good quality ingredients. KGW (King George Whitings) is thinly battered and very moist. Peking duck is good meat with skin ratio is my type. Jade abalone , snow crab (stir fried with foie gras) etc are very fresh. Roasted squab is best in Melbourne.
L. L.
Quality has certainly dropped since lockdown ( maybe due to availability?) but usually is very nice for authentic but modern presented chinese food.
G. T.
Food is absolutely superb! Best experience I’ve ever had! We were taken care of like kings and queens! Never had Authentic Chinese and will never go anywhere The food was beautifully prepared, delicious
S. B.
Everything was absolutely delicious and it really hit the spot. Probably a little over staffed for my liking- had the waiter comment on almost every dish after we ate it. Maybe divert some of the staffing costs to modernising the fitout a little.
V. L.
Of course the food was wonderful, but the service was astoundingly good - by far the best I have ever had (subtle and clever). Such a great experience. Well worth it for a special meal.
M. S.
Lovely place, beautiful food and very polite staff. It's a bit pricey but you get what you pay for.
D. W.
Had a 3.5 hour lunch. Remined me of the 80s when I visited for "business". Today the menu started with whiting with salt and lemon juice. Next the famous Peking Duck and topped off with beef with Sichuan pepper sauce. I have never had a better piece of beef in 50 years of dining out. Absolutely a gem on a plate. Service never fails to impress.
B. G.
We enjoyed the Chef’s 6 Signature Banquet with matching wine and loved every bit of it. It was perfect including the service which was attentive yet unobtrusive. Can't agree with some peoples comments that say your paying for the service though. Our one downer for a perfect night was the expression on the maître d's face because he did not think we tipped enough.
A. G.
Absolutely fantastic experience! Highly recommend
R. D.
This is an outstanding restaurant. The best Chinese food I have eaten. The service is very special up to the standard expected in an fine dining establishments. We choose the 4 course fixed menu but the menu is extensive. I look forward to going again.
B. T.
I visited for only the second time on my own and rated that 4.5 stars, so 4 stars overall for two visits. Service is just magnificent. Knowledgeable and approachable staff. Quite attentive, albeit on a Tuesday night. Great and very unique dishes including claypot saltbush lamb brisket braised. I hope to return soon. Would highly recommend.
H. T. N.
The service here was just impeccable! I was here recently for a pre-theatre dinner with my husband, we told the manager we needed to be out by a certain time and they were happy to accommodate. My favourite dish would have been the peking duck and the bake crab shell. I look forward to returning soon !!
S. M.
Has been a favourite for years. Wonderful décor, pleasant, attentive & knowledgeable staff, plenty of distance between tables & exquisite food.
Several daily lunch menu options are available Mon to Fri.
I opted for 5 entrée courses & a $49 bottle of wine yesterday which, with an $8 tip, came to $160 (lunch for 1 person) & it was well worth it.
M. M.
Been wanting to go here for years so finally we did and I can say a lot of their dishes were pretty good but for what we paid for the crab dumpling ($10 each) it was pretty average. The barra dish was like a noodle made with barra meat mixed with other things. It had a weird texture adn we didn't really like it. Loved the abalone and glass noodle dish and desserts were pretty good. Wanted to try the bird's nest but for $120 each, its a bit much. Not sure if I would come back. We tried a few dishes between the 3 of us.

Fabulous food, great service
M. R.
Beyond exceptional and one of the last true fine dining experiences in the world. After eating in Hong Kong and fine dining around the globe and Australia, I have to declare that the Flower Drum must the best Cantonese in the world. Beats three Michelin star cantonese restaurants I've eaten in by a considerable margin.
The wagyu beef cheeks are sublime, dumplings are amazing and the peking duck is an event as much as it is a meal.
Service cannot be faulted and while it comes with a price tag, I feel that they have held the prices fairly well in the past 2 decades while the rest of Australia got more expensive.
Wine list is astonishing! Cannot wait to go back for more. I love how the interior has remained true to its history.
S. H.
Order the fried rice. The best I've had anywhere. The other food is as you would expect - high quality. Not cheap in fact very expensive. Its all true what they say about the food. The atmosphere is however just above average.
d. b.
Loved the vegetarian options.
G. S.
My wife and I enjoyed the Chef’s 6 Course Signature Banquet with matching wine and loved every bit of it. It was perfect including the service which was attentive yet unobtrusive. Can't agree with some peoples comments that say your paying for the service though. Our one downer for a perfect night was the expression on the maître d's face because he did not think we tipped enough. I tipped 10% of the meal but I think he felt I should have included our drinks. When you charge me $50 for a Scotch I don't ever think you need to be paid extra. Regardless we gave the extra to a charity the next night and feel satisfied.
M. G.
Went there for a company event. Service was exceptional from the moment I walked in. Restaurant was a simple but very elegant traditional decor. Food was really good. Staff was very attentive to dietary needs at the table and suggested a few things off the menu

Well, let's start by admitting our other 2 favourite places in the city are movida and city wine bar! So, excellent friendly service (start to finish), beautiful high quality food & great variety, great wine list, plenty of space and quiet music in the background! 10/10.
N. E.
Fine Dining Cantonese at its BEST.
L. B.
This is one of my favorite places in the area. The dishes that they serve are amazing! The chef also knows how to interact with the customers. I have to say that this place deserves a 5-star rating from its clients.
D. P.
Amazing food, great atmosphere and excellent service.
Dim Sum with scallops was best we ever had. All food looks great and taste delicious.
Thank you Tonny and Derek for lifetime experience. We are definitely coming back.
G. G.
Amazing restaurant, amazing service. It is rather expensive but suitable for special occasions.
The food was delicious and of quality. Wine list was extensive.
Please make sure to make a reservation or you'll be waiting a while. A long while.

One of the must do venues of Melbourne, a virtual establishment of the Melbourne food scene and definitely one of my favourite dining experiences.
S.
Amazing food and service. The attention to detail was great. Loved the Tom Yum soup and the pork dish. The truffle fried rice was an interesting choice but enjoyable. Highly recommended.
J. C.
My favourite Melbourne restaurant. Impeccable service, delightful food and an extensive wine list.
The Flower Drum never goes out of style.
R.
The best Peking Duck I’ve ever had. They also made four cackling team members on a work lunch (who were threatening the ambience of the restaurant) feel extremely welcome, and the service was overall top notch. An institution for a reason!
P. K.
One of the best restaurants in the world! Peking duck is exquisite and the service is exemplary - wonderful
C. C.
Service was attentive and wonderful - food was just okay given the price (we live in Asia).. Soup was well made with good ingredients but other dishes were too greasy.
W. G.
This restaurant is not for everyone for a number of reasons... cost is only one of them. But, this restaurant is an amazing experience. Leave your attitudes at the curb side. Open the big red door and be prepared to be entertained by absolute expertise of the highest culinary standards.
L. H.
Dining at Flower Drum Restaurant is the highlight of our 16 days trip in Australia. We did not expect there is a Chinese restaurant in Australia exceeds Vancouver's Chinese culinary standard. I personally will give 10 in all three categories (ambience, cuisine, service) for Fine Dining to Flower Drum. We thank our friends hosting us and sharing such memorable experience.
F.
An elegant Chinese - Cantonese - restaurant. Dishes i had were quite different from other Chinese dishes I had had before. It is quite expensive though, but good for special occasions. The eye fillet beef was the best in my taste.
M. C.
Really very nice. Food, ambience, service were superb.
E. A.
The food was amazing, stuff was were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was the best. Thank you so much for a time.

First visited Flower Drum over 10 years ago, and get a chance to revisit there again recently.
The food was top notch, and the presentation was spectacular. The manager was so artistic, that he could use plum sauce to decorate each serving of Peking duck with in unique pictures.
Our dedicated waiter, Derek was very good with children, he single handedly keeping our 2 young children entertained throughout the whole duration of dining, while performing his serving task done well.
We were the first customers at Flower Drum that evening, and we even get the pleasure of getting the ordering recommendation directly from the chef, Keong.
If you seeking chinese cuisine with a unique touch, Flower Drum should be on the list.
D. W.
Impeccable place. Food is amazing have been eating here for many years.ll food here is amazing and unless you drink alcohol the price is well worth it! Exceptional service, fabulous wine list & food beyond criticism.
L. H.
There’s a timeless quality to Flower Drum which opened 38years & standard has been kept up since my first time here came here some 35 years ago. Peking duck and their steamed fish have always been their best and my favorite along with the Stew Lamb Claypot which needs advanced booking.

Staff were friendly and attentive, food fabulous and everyone in our party enjoyed it. Servings were generous and quality was there as was the service all of which you pay for but it was well worth it.
C. D.
Simply the best! Jason was a great host and made selection of their best dishes for us then finished up with a tour of the kitchen. Get along, you will not be disappointed!!
M. R.
The best Chinese food we have ever eaten by far. The menu is a little hard to decipher and the portions small but surprisingly we didn't leave there hungry! This restaurant is fine dining at its best so take your money with you.
C. G.
Service was amazing, food was absolutely delicious. The only thing I could fault would be the large lengths of time between servings. Will definitely go back
J. S.
Delicious simple/traditional Chinese style food done well, delicious seafood and meats cooked to perfection, nothing too complicated flavour wise, amazing wines, the Adelaide Hills pinot Gris and the mornington peninsula Merlot were so good, staff were amazing, very welcoming and professional and attentive. Ask for Barry.
R. C.
Just an incredible, classy dining experience. Where trendy, hipster restaurants come and go, the Flower Drum is unparalleled for an elegant dining experience and first class produce prepared to perfection. 5 stars all the way.
A. M.
A group of friends and I dined here on Saturday night. We had the 6 course Chef Banquet and the food was absolutely stunning. Faultless food and service with a big thankyou to Fong and Barney for looking after us so well!
D. D.
Decided to give myself a treat for my last day in Melbourne, and absolutely did not regret it. Had the chef's special for the night for starters, roasted quail on lentils and then the rabbit fettuccine
A. H.
This is my family's go to for a special occasions! The service couldn't be more outstanding and the food is excellent. Our favorites are the Crispy Duck and Pancakes and the Crispy Lemon Chicken, actually I could go on and on 😃#LetsGuide
D. E.
We opted for the 4 course tasting and I upgraded the steak to wagyu for an extra $40. When the waiter asked how I liked it I said my partners angus was much better and I was, thus, disappointed. The response was to advise if I preferred that would I like one for free to make amends. I accepted the offering and apart from that meaning I ate too much I was very satisgied.
P. S.
Fantastic classic Cantonese experience, brilliant food and impeccable service
c. h.
Had a huge a la carte lunch with my wife on a Monday and loved every bit of it. The dimsum, crispy chicken, szechuan pork were just heavenly(do try the chicken...it's just awesome). Staff were very professional and quick in terms if the service. I can see some peeps complaining abt the price, but to be fair, complaining abt a Chinese resto at this level is like comparing 'Alain Ducasse' and a street brasserie in Paris. If you're someone who can't appreciate Asian palate at its best, then just go order at a local Chinese restaurants. Definitely coming back for more of this stuff.
H. T.
Chinese cuisine as you dream it could be. Don't miss the Scallop Siu Mai and the Quail sang choi bow: exceptional. Very attentive, discreet service, but it's all about the seafood.
H. Z.
Flower Drum is generally regarded as the finest dining restaurant for Chinese cuisine in Melbourne and the food did live up to its name (although pricey). We enjoyed the baked crab and crispy skin chicken.
R. E.
Brilliant in its ingredients, simplicity and execution.
Top notch service.
It hasn't lost its touch.
Really it generally is impossible to fault in all ways.
I'm lucky enough to have been going for decades (parents have been since it was a uni student restaurant below street level..even longer).
Gilbert Lau created an icon, and I'm delighted to say that despite it being passed on (to staff if i recall), its still every bit as good.
To try:
- peking duck is as good as it gets
- crab baked in shell....wow.
- Cantonese beef is sometimes so soft you can cut it with your tongue
- finish off with a sweet and sour fish in a light batter...let the chef choose the fish. Wow. Epic and light and a great end to the main courses. (Not on menu but ask...they can make just about anything).
Others:
- pan fried John dory with mushroom sauce
- san choi bao - any of them. Lobster if feeling exotic!
- banana fritters for dessert.
Really everything is good. Ask for something if you want it and if possible they will make it like they have been making it for years.
And failing that, ask them to order for you and simply tell them what time you need to finish, sit back and enjoy!
J. B.
were visiting to this spot and the meals continues to be superior, at all times the suitable value! Fast and delicious. Extremely recommend
H. H.
quality you can taste that is consistent years after years. have been coming to this place since 2004 and they never fail to deliver. sometimes they dont sell a particular menu just because it is not up to standard. yes, they are expensive, but it is worthed.
B. H.
I found this to be a hard place to rate. Its no secret Flower Drum is a Melbourne Chinese Institution. Service, which cannot be overrated, is impeccable. One ground to rate a place is asking yourself the question would I return again. Yes, on someone else's business expense account. Its seems to be that sort of place. On the night I was there, with a group, I did not experience any sense of adventure with the food. Peking duck, was just so so. The one highlight was the crispy skin chicken. The skin was seriously crispy. The flesh ah so tender. It was served with sides of lemon sauce and salt / pepper. But nothing else that I found inspiring. I much prefer the very clean flavours and style of Lau's Family Kitchen in St Kilda (plug). FD is serving to a clientele who demand Peking Duck and want to finish with deep fried icecream. Oh really. I'm sorry I did not get to explore the menu but then I got blown away by the quoted prices for abalone and crayfish. Its that sort of place where the clients want to impress by dining at the named institution and have either a business expense account or on the government purse or cash to get rid of.

The high degree of professional and excellent service continues after Gilbert. The suave Terence and Raymond Chan continue the fine tradition of this iconic Melbourne fine dining experience
K. G.
A perfect meal and perfect service. Excellent selection of non-alcoholic drinks was a welcome surprise. Will be back for another special occasion.
n. m.
Tasty food, fast and friendly service, relaxing atmosphere but prices are bit high.
N. H.
When we want to celebrate we choose here!! The best service ever! Great food, great atmosphere, love this place. Thanks for all
L. M.
Incredible staff who are so professional and friendly. Lovely look restaurant. Tasty food.
G. F.
Nice place to eat. Flower Drum has a nice feel and ambiance to it. prices are not bad. Overall a good meal and night out!
T. N.
Best chinese food I've had. I didn't think chinese food could get fancy but this place proved me wrong. Great for that special occasion
B. C. S.
Totally deserving their current No.1 ranking as The Best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. Fine dining at it's best! Great cuisine and superb service.
s. p.
The service was good, almost too good a waiter hovering around us almost the whole time. The food was totally overpriced. The meals were so small you would have had to have a lot more than we had to have a decent sized meal. Thank heavens it was lunch and I wasn't that hungry as I had breakfast a few hours earlier
S. A.
A very special restaurant quality food, superb service, very attentive. When you need direction with new foods Barry is there to help. For lunch or a special event definitely go here
L. F.
Prices were a bit high but that's what you expect with such an amazing restaurant. The food was magnificent, the service was a pleasure and the atmosphere was so relaxing. Almost felt like we were dining in China.
B. I.
Terrific staff who paid attention to details. Food was good but there isn't the option to share family style for all dishes. Kitchen service could have been quicker.
E. M.
Exquisite. Loved everything about this place. Excellent Food! Great Ambiance. Had a great time. One of the best restaurants I would love to go repeatedly
M. S.
The food is amazing. Everything was cooked to perfection. The service is outstanding. Cant rave enough about this restaurant..
T. M.
Superb Cantonese dishes served with great attentiveness from staff.
W. z.
The place is so lovely and the Chinese food is the best in Melbourne by far. Hopefully they will make it through these difficult times.
M. C. (.
Underwhelmed.... reasonable food and good service.... but definitely not up to the level the use to be and certainly not in line with the prices they command. Place, ambiance and menu in need of revitalization.
J. T. (.
Excellent service and quality. The time waiting for food was a little long however it is nessesary for the intricate dishes they create. A minor draw back being the price considering the ingredients used were fairly common.
J. T.
great service, however this is classical Guangzhou food. Don't expect fusion, and do expect to pay over $100 pp. It's an experience, however the food is not amazing, and comparable fare can be found in China town for 10% of the price
H. S. O. (.
Chinese fine dining. Deep fried oyster is amazing. Everything else is also above standard. But it's slightly overpriced, about $100 per head for a meal.

ONCE THE BEES KNEES OF CANTONESE DINING IN MELBOURNE
These days the Flower Drum is more casual than in its heyday when it was probably the best Chinese Restaurant in Melbourne.
LOcated in Chinatown in Melbourne's CBD its worth dropping for a decent cantonese style meal
G. Y.
Really enjoyed the food here the service was quite good as well I would recommend it the prices are certainly on the high end expect to spend 150 to 200 dollars per person
S. B.
Unbelievable service here. In fact, I can't remember the last time I received such great service and food in the one venue, in Australia. The competition should take note
B. T.
The service was absolutely wonderful! They catered for gluten free so well, I got to enjoy everything everyone else did! Will be back here a thousand times!
A. E.
Delicious food, amazing and friendly service, and classy and laid back setting. Space between tables allows for a more private ambience. Menu has lots of varieties. A must try.
D. B.
Exceptional.
Everything was cooked to perfection.
The staff were a pleasure to watch as they satisfied your every need.
A truly worthwhile experience for a special occasion.
K. G.
Superb food, and great service. Definitely recommend 👍
J. B.
The service is everything - the baked crab and Peking duck was even better - an institution that not only lived up to its reputation, but exceeded it! Cannot recommend it enough!
E. T.
To dine her is a total 5 star experience with delicious traditional chinese meals and matching 5 star service and definately not a budget meal but to experience such attentive service and mouth watering meals that will be remembered for weeks after it is worth the splurge if you have the dollars to spoil yourself and if entertaining guests you will not be disapointed.
C. J.
Had the summer banquet. Highlights included the abalone and Peking duck. Service was first rate.
M. M.
It's a great restaurant! We came with friends and the food was delicious. The service was great too.
D. D.
Wow! This is the best Chinese I’ve ever eaten. Traditional dishes and old fashioned service. What a great experience.
M. A.
Greatest place on earth. Peking duck is the best in Australia by a long way.
D. D. S.
This has to be the best in Melbourne !
The food ,service and the ambience was exceptional !
T. S.
Great restaurant. The service is fast and the food is delicious. It's a good place for a friend's meeting.
R. K.
Great service and good food. Chose the more expensive option for lunch with wine pairing but if you have the space it is still great value!
K. M.
Ordered through Providoor. Food was amazing! And very easy to prepare. Can’t wait to visit in person after lockdown
M. A.
Excellent food with superb service! Normally my grandma would be friends with the waiters for months before we received to great service we did.
R. H.
Way too expensive for what you get. Service is great as is the food but personally I feel like.i have had just as good food elsewhere at a fraction of the cost.
K.
Although the service was great and attentive, the food was mediocre for the price. It was nice enough but not worth the price, I have had food just as nice at restaurants that are 5 times cheaper.
J. K.
Always the best Chinese food in Melbourne.
T. A.
Always a great time at this 5 star restaurant. Barry is always a pleasure to deal with.
G. N.
Very exclusive, with a very fine asian cuisine, great variety of fine wine menu, delighted to say that Flower drum lives up to its expectations, service is impeccable a bit pricy and need to be booked in advance
T. B.
Great Cantonese food at a great price and very generous portions. Love this place! Been coming here for years.
F. Y.
Exceptional service and good quality of food. Great atmosphere for dine in and enjoy the meal very much.
T. G.
Loved this restaurant good food, good staff, good service.
The only draw back was that it was very busy, otherwise a terrific experience
C. P.
I love my asian food and I wasn't disappointed. Unlike most chinese restaurants the decor is superb here and a really nice change.
B. K.
Very good Cantonese food. Food flawless and staff very attentive. Old decor is character. Please don’t renovate
M. M.
The food was quite good. However, it was a bit overpriced compared to other comparable Chinese restaurants in Melbourne.
G. B.
Had a great night here recently. Excellent food and ambience and the service was outstanding. Really enjoyed Barney. Great night thank you
A. D.
I want to leave a statement. Your staff have been fantastic. Meals is all the time delicious.
D. M.
Another dining experience we have been at the flowerdrum many times now,our head waiter was Barry and served us to perfection well done.
J. R.
High quality food and service, matched by the price.
A. D. P.
Quality service, they didn't service my favourite dish though. Kept on claiming that they didn't serve Bucantini all' Amatriciana. How rude.
E. H.
Great Asian dining, we enjoyed the dumplings and barbecued chicken Chinese style. Can highly recommend
A. P.
Went to Flower drum last night for dinner with my family. Had a wonderful time with great service and excellent food. Highly recommend.
M. B.
Good food; not the wow factor I was expecting for the price point. I’ve had as good and better Chinese elsewhere.
K. J.
Wonderful staff fantastic atmosphere and enjoyed the meals.
s. K.
Very high price though, and while the food is good it’s not the best. We choose the 4 course fixed menu but the menu is extensive.
T. C.
We recently had a very special family get together at the restaurant. While it was an expensive exercise, we could not fault the service and the food was very well received.
P. T.
When I want consistent Quality of food and Service , this is where I bring my business associates and my wife.
When it it matters. "The Flower Drum " !!!
R. T.
Exceptional service, fabulous wine list & food beyond criticism. Highly recommend for a special celebration.
M. H.
This is Cuisine at its finest. The chefs are masters of their craft and I cannot recommend Flower Drum highly enough.
T. P. D.
The Best Chinese Fine Dining Restaurant in Australia!
I strongly encourage you to try if you want an excellent dining experience.
S. F.
Incredible. Food was very nice, staff were great, service was fast. One of the better restaurants in Melbourne.
N. S.
I quite enjoyed my experience at the Flower Drum. I especially like the attentive service. This would not be to everyone's liking, but on this occasion I reveled in it. I felt very spoilt. It is incredibly OVERPRICED but it is one for the 'bucket' list!
C. A.
Elegant, old school restaurant with classic dishes perfected.
S. H.
Good food, nice place and staff are great, prices a little high. Would recommend to anyone.
M. S.
Absolutely the best Cantonese style restaurant I have ever been one for the bucket list
J. R.
Great food and atmosphere
d. l.
Awesome food, excellent service. Keep us coming back time and time again.
D. T. W.
It’s the best Asian restaurant in Melbourne. Great service and food.
D. P.
As good as it gets for Chinese food.
J. T.
service is usually really good, the fried rice is amazing.
N. N.
Authentic Hong Kong style cuisine. We had a 5 course banquet for lunch and it did not disappoint.
