Such a great place !
Food is absolutely delicious, and always consistent. Been here a few times now, and never been disappointed.
The curries are perfect, so much flavour and spice.
The roti is amazing!
Being able to order from a QR-code and pay at the same time is a great new way of service.
Highly recommend this place
K. L.
Had the spicy lamb curry with a milk tea. Food was decent and good value for money.
Malaysian curry tastes different to what you’d normally expect from your usual curries. I’d say it’s slightly worse than what I would want. Same with the milk tea.
B. M.
Busy Malaysian restaurant. Tasty roti with a variety of dips, satay with delicious peanut sauce. When ordering some dishes they say it will take 20 minutes but comes much quicker. Good variety of noodle and rice dishes. Did not try the desserts.
A.
Mamak is always a good time! Close to work for a quick dinner. Get the roti and the chicken satay. That sauce is like crack. They actually bottle it and sell it in store. We also have been loving the mee goreng noodles too. It’s really filling and tasty.
A. U.
Amazingly tasty Malaysian food. Well recommended place. One downside is price. It’s a bit on the higher side
M. S.
Good food with reasonable price. Pay with cash earns some discount 😂.
But I like the chicken curries in Roti road than here.
Here roti chanai is great.
T. R.
It was a reasonably good dinner.
Food was delicious and good price. Also you can get 10% discount if you pay in cash. Negative point was the loud noise. Kitchen was too noisy while they were cooking and even the people were talking too loud.
M.
A favourite for those who craved freshly made Roti Canai (not Frozen!!), vibrant curries, all at an attractive price point.
I also appreciate that you can tailor the sweetness level of the Teh Tarik and Teh Halia to your preference.
R. B.
YUMMY Foods. We came really far from to eat this foods. One of the best foods. Will come again 😜

This has been in our list for a while, as I love Malaysian food, and I am a big fan of Nasi Lemak, Malaysia's national dish, we decided to finally visit.
This place gets packed very quick, so you’ll have to wait for a while before getting yourself a table.
Once we were seated by the friendly staff, we ordered the following:
- Nasi Lemak - Fragrant coconut rice accompanied by an ensemble of sambal, peanuts, crispy anchovies, cucumber, and hard-boiled egg. You have the option to add curry chicken/fish/lamb/vegetarian. I opted for the Fish Curry.
- Kari ikan - A tangy fish curry cooked with fresh tomatoes, okra, and eggplant.
- Ayam goreng - Malaysian-style fried chicken. Marinated with herbs and spices and full of flavour. ($5 per piece)
- Nasi goreng - Malaysian-style fried rice with spicy sambal, eggs, prawns, French beans, assorted veggies, topped with fried shallots.
Loved the Nasi Lemak! Everything about it is exactly how I had it in Malaysia. The fried chicken was nice & juicy, if a bit oily. The Kari Ikan (fish curry) was not as tangy as we expected it. The Nasi Goreng wasn’t served with the traditional fried eggs on top, so it was just a mixture of fried rice with prawns. Didn’t feel traditional.
We asked for single rotis, but were surprised that they don’t serve them individually, and you have to order the curry dips and spicy sambal sauce with. It was a real let down, as we just wanted some bread with the curry.
At the end of the meal, we ordered the Kopi Tarik (Malaysian white coffee), and asked for no sugar as we know it it’s made with condensed and evaporated milk which is already sweet. Apparently, that is not possible, and it has to come with sugar!!! So even with one spoon of sugar, it was way too sweet for us, and we honestly couldn’t be bothered to drink it.
This place has potentials to be better if they are a bit more flexible with stuff that can either not be added or can be purchased as a single item. We are not asking to change the food, just don’t add sugar to the drinks, and charge us for single rotis, similar to the fried chicken.
J. N.
Had Nasi goreng which was yum, Roti is fluffy, Dahl is delicious, satay sauce is the best!
K. M.
Cheap, Quick and Some decent flavours! Please do not expect amazing customer service. Here speed and customer turnaround is important. I recommend the famous roti canai and murtabak…good value for your money
a. a.
Awesome Malaysian cuisine you can have in the city! All the dishes are delicious and the customer services are on point! And it’s halal. I highly recommend this place.
S. B.
Quick service, staff is friendly and very professional. They already let you know which items on the menu are not available prior to ordering.
Food was amazing - totally value for money. I don’t eat spicy and was worried about the Sambal but everything was just perfect. They also took into account allergies and altered the ingredients to cater for that; food was still DELICIOUS without prawns & prawn paste.
Toilets were clean. Lots of space in the restaurant.
Overall 10/10! Would absolutely recommend and will absolutely eat there again. Could not be more satisfied.
S. C.
You can’t pick a wrong food here, everything here is YUMMY 😋
E. J.
I love their nasi lemak, its my go to paired with fried chicken. However, We went there in late December and they didnt let us to choose our table as we wanted to space out from the crowd. The spacing between one table to another is quite close which is quite scary dining in during covid.
T. F. A.
Food was really nice and was quick to arrive to the table even on a very busy day. Only criticism is the size of the tables. They are very small for 4 people. If you buy plates to share then you are easily out of space on the table. Great food still. Since the ordering is via QR code scan, just order as you go without ordering all in one go.
Also pro tip: pay by cash and order at the counter for a 5% discount
C. B.
Popular joint and good crowd, food is closest to authentic Malaysian, though there is room for perfection. With that said I do recommend this place for your cravings of Malaysian dishes.
V. F.
We love this place. First went to the one in Sydney and fell in love with it. Super stoked that there is one in Melbourne. We pretty much always order the same. The roti canai and Maggi Goreng. Can't describe to you how much joy these foods bring to us. I recently brought work colleagues there that were so thrilled and asking when we are going there next. Can't recommend enough. Not your sit down and lounge around place. Get it, order, eat and get out! No fuss.
L. Y. X.
just wanna say, “ I LOVE IT “
they definitely do better than the other malaysia restaurant out there. the roti definitely taste like what you can get in malaysia. for the price we pay was pretty worth it, but still can’t believe price is higher then the malaysia mamak 😝
the Teh taste awesome, the roti telur bawang is pretty oniony and eggy . just like in malaysia. cendol was okay, the portion can be serve for a little bit more
F. Q.
Mamak has a range of good Malaysian food. However, they are a bit lacking in seasonings. Also, the service was slow even though the restaurant was not busy.
Overall, it is a good place to grab lunch or dinner, but nothing really stood out that will make me come back for more.
A. “. L.
Good tasting food, quick service and a great spot for lunch.
Honestly the curry's we had we're ok, but the satay chicken is fantastic! I definitely recommend them if you are going here! The only thing would be is that its a pretty cramped but big restaurant, but this isn't a big deal.
h. -. (.
I was worried about foods because I heard so many tourist visiting here. From time to time people good comment even if there got bad experience.
When I took foods from here, I was too much worried about it. foods were amazing, reasonable price.
I would recommend it to friends or other tourist .
E. K.
One of the most well known Malaysian establishment which originated from Sydney. We tried the rojak and the nasi Lemak. Both food are well presented but lacking anything special to make us want to come back again. Prices are also on the steeper side compared to the servings.
Food - 6
Service - 8
Vibe - 6
Price - $$$
R. F.
pretty good quality for Malay/Mamak styled food, but prices are a little on the upper end for their quantity - its still pretty affordable though, and the taste quality does more than make up for it. the Fish Curry here is definitely highly recommended.
I. P.
The place to go when you have major Malaysian food cravings. The fried chicken is pretty incredible. The curry and fried rice was enjoyable too. They're just a tad pricey but it does come at a substantial portion size. Get the roti bomb for dessert it's chewy buttery sweet goodness I'd eat 3 portions if I could.
T.
A big fan of Mamak. I love their freshly made roti. The Maggi goreng is also very tasty and well sauced. It brought the heat that's for sure. Teh Tarik was the right level of sweet. Highly recommended.
J. C.
Murtabak was very generous is proportion. The staff here are very friendly and my mum who is from Malaysia insisted we come back, so we did twice in a week. Her new fav spot while visiting me in Melbourne.
I. L.
Decent place serving Malaysian food that is pretty authentic. Good variety to choose from and curries tastes awesome. The amount of sugar they use in their drinks is way too high though. We asked for less sugar and still found it too sweet. You have to ask for lowest sugar level for it to be acceptable, or ask for no sugar and add your own. Rather pricey.
D. K.
Visited here today with my girlfriend, and we loved all three dishes and had to order one more main and a desert. Maybe it was not us but the food that made us order more wdk lol. Just letting you know No one paid nothing to make me write this review, and I do think this is a fine place serving decent food and thus worth a try! ;)
M. K.
Very authentic Malaysian dishes in this restaurant. Chicken satay just like the way it cooked in Malaysia, mini version. The satay sauce is the best. Freshly made roti is the best and famous in this restaurant. Crunchy and fluffy. The rojak is Malaysian Indian version vegetable rojak, with chunky crackers on top. This restaurant is quite big, can fit big group. Go early if you want to avoid crowd, this restaurant can get very busy. Very close to public transport. Parking isn't easy to find, but paid car parks are nearby.
P. K.
If you guys looking for Malaysian food, I recommend Mamak, food was so delicious and amazing taste.Food is halal and I so appreciate that. And the portion was fair enough. We like it.
D. S.
Staff are very friendly and attentive. Ambience and the aroma of the restaurant really takes you to the typical mamak stall on the streets of Malaysia. Food is good, would have prefer if they're warmer. Definitely worth visiting and trying out.
D. S.
Came here again today having visited about 18 months ago when there was a cue out the front on a Saturday night. Today during lunch hour, Mamak was about half full and doing s good trade with quick turnover or tables. The lunch specials are worth looking at with considerable savings of $’s. $14 for my lamb curry and rice that was a generous portion size.
Staff are efficient and friendly. Water in the table straight away, order taken as soon as I’d looked at it and knew what I wanted.
You can view one of the chefs from the street as the kitchen is at the front.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Right near corner of Elizabeth Street so good tram and bus access.
J. T.
Much better Mee Goreng and Chicken Satay this time.
10/10 Roti Bom, imagine that with a bit of palm sugar sauce and coconut Pandan ice cream
Q. M.
I heard good things about Mamak before visiting, but it’s a bit hit or miss. Let’s start with the hits. It’s BYO with a minimal corkage. The staff will store your chilled wine and top you up. The egg roti is fluffy and delicious (as well as the curries it’s served with). But the service is a bit slow. There are no wine glasses. The vegetable curry contained barely any vegetables and the Nasi Lemak was pretty plain. The flavours were fine but not great, and the dishes were affordable but didn’t provide value, unfortunately.
I. B.
Best satay for satay lovers like me... juicy, tender meat that’s perfect with a side of rice and lamb curry. Don’t make things difficult for yourself by deciding between the beef or chicken satay, just get half a dozen of each 👍loads of takeaway orders flood the kitchen at peak times but food is served fast to the dine-in customers as well.
D. L.
I love this place. The Roti Canai is the best I’ve ever had anywhere and the lamb curry is to die for. I go out of my way to go there.
S. F. &. O.
Wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable, either.
A bit too much on the sweet side.
Reminded me of many ethnic places where homesick people gather to remember what they used to eat, without putting enough effort into the food.
May look and smell authentic, but a bit off the track.
F. 4.
Best and taste food in Melbourne I ever had. Specially mention for their service.
Thanks mamak 😍😍
s. s.
Nice place with fast service and tasty food. We ordered me gorang extra spicy and it was served with good amount of prawns, fish cakes and spicy level were good too. Roti Canai served with fish gravy was good too.
K. G.
I loved the Sambal Udang by far the best I’ve tasted. Sambal Sotong was alright and was disappointed with the Kari Ikan. When I hear Kari Ikan, I expect it to be deep fried fish soaked in curry. But that’s just me, I didn’t like the Kari Ikan because the fish still has it’s fishy smell and was not washed properly.
A littlebit pricey on price point. Each dish could easily cost fifty percent less of it’s pricing.
H. J.
Amazing! Wish I could give 10 stars!
The speed, service and food was all outstanding. Whilst some foods were spicy, the waiter did warn us. That’s a first for spicy places! Then when we ordered, the food was out within 5 minutes of ordering, OUTSTANDING! Then the food was tasty and everyone on my table cleaned there plates empty. Thank you to the amazing team at Mamak!
K. S.
Love this place! Food is great! My cravings for Chicken Curry and Nasi Goreng were very much satisfied! Definitely going back! 👍🏼👍🏼
O. S.
I was often passing by this restaurant, wondering why such a big place was always full of people. Finally decided to get in and understood why.
We ordered "Roti telur" (classic combination of eggs and roti), "Mee goreng noodles" (spicy wok-tossed hokkien noodles with eggs, prawns, fish cake slices and fresh bean sprouts), and "Kopi tarik" (Malaysian white coffee). The food was good and not expensive. The atmosphere was really cozy.
If you have ever been to Malaysia, tried their food and want to experience it again, you must definitely go to grab a bite in Mamak.
M. K.
Family friendly restaurant. Satay chicken, fish dish and tiger prawn sambal are great. Most of the curries have gluten-free options. Service is very quick. Price is reasonable. Crockery and cutlery has done their time. Restaurants is very big but sitting arrangements are VERY cramped.
N. N. T.
Authentic South East Asian Flavour,
But recommend to place your order at once.
Since dinner hours very busy, our add on steam rice was missed until we finish 😂
M.
The best lamb curry I've ever had. Melting tasty spicy enough fresh.... I don't have enough compliment to give to you. It was exzctly the taste I was looking for for my last day in Australia. Thank you for this delicious moment. 20$ as a main course very generous in meat
D. R.
The fish curry in the main menu is my favourite. Friendly staff. It could be quite loud when its packed.
A. F.
This was quick, tasty, and affordable fare in between drinking at bars in the city. I can't fault the amazing lamb curry, nasi goreng, or the egg roti as we gorged ourselves on delicious Malaysian cuisine. This is no-frills eating, crowd-pleasing flavours and generous serves. I'll be back again for sure!
D. A.
I can verify that this is pretty authentic Malaysian food. Good fried chicken with the traditional spice recipe thats common back home and the rojak is pretty darn killer. A little bit on the pricier side though above average ranging from 12 to 18 per plate, but you pay for portion
A. P.
Popular Malaysian restaurant in Melbourne. (there’s a pretty sizable Malaysian community in Australia). Good roti prata with authentic curry and fluffy roti. Gado gado (Indonesian/Malaysian salad) is fresh and has a good texture. Desserts (Sweet roti) are also very good
Would recommend a visit when in Melbourne.
B. W.
If you are a roti canai fan, this is a must. Very nolstagic as the food here brought me all the way back to when I was a kid eating with grandpa in Malaysia. Very fluffy and curries were delicious. Had to order takeout before I left.
Price is on the high end for roti canai/telur, but then again this restaurant is in Malbourne CBD.
S. N.
The last time I ate in Mamak was in Sydney in 2013. It has been about 7 years since the last time I ate this nasi lemak.
It was quite alright but I was disappointed with the fried chicken. It was a little bit plain. The sambal and anchovies helped to bring in that rich flavor. Definitely, the overall taste downgraded since the last time I tried this dish.
However, the teh tarik was nice.
r. R.
I love mamak.... I have been to the store in sydney first time and addicted their food... and I tried melbourne store as well, still good! My favourite is rozak salad and nasigorang and roti :)))
Z. K.
Mamak is definitely the place to go if you're after the best roti, but sadly that is all I can recommend. The majority of the food we had was quite bland which was really disappointing.
W. N.
Consistently good Malaysian cuisine, never been disappointed with the food here, service is ok but the place is usually loud and busy - as many have said difficult to have a chat given the noise. Menu is limited but that's not a bad thing as the focus on what they do best
A. G.
Very helpful staff members.. very clean Halal food.. If you want to try something new this is the place to go loved it.. cheap prices!!
s. s.
Authentic Malaysian mamak, tasty chicken curry quote spicy in a yummy way, nasi lemak is delicious too, the chicken is very tasty and the rice is coconut rice and smells so good. We had roti tissue as dessert that comes with a scoop of ice cream. It's so crispy even after it was delivered to our hotel and we've had our dinner. They packed the ice cream separately so we could freeze it while we were having dinner. Overall amazing, absolutely stunned with everyty we ordered tonight. Highly recommend.
S. A. A.
Best place to go if you are craving for local indian or malay food. Their dishes are authentic and nice. The staff is really helpful Very fast service and not much of a waiting time. A very busy and noisy cafe. Their Teh tarik and roti prata was too good.
T. M. T.
Fast service. The fried chicken was tasty. Felt that the nasi lemak needed more sambal and had very little sides though.
S. M.
We went for malaysian after few drinks on a friday night. Ordered some Nasi Lamak with curry chicken and some satay beef - chicken to share. Food was very tatsy and fresh. Service was very good. Highly recommended. It is not a very fancy restaurant but serve good food. $74 for 4 of us. Plenty of food.
시.
I really loved this place!~😍 They have the best Nasi Goreng🍛 in CBD and I also liked their Chicken Satay🍖🍢 The food came out really fast💃🏻 and the staff was generous in explaining all the menu I’ve asked😆 But!!! they don’t sell alcohol😭😭😭 It’s really disappointing👺 먹을만해요!~ 근데 술을 안 팔아요!~
L.
TBH, i really looked forward to having these.
But it’s not up to my expectation😭
Besides there are so many ppl and crowded and noisy. So it’s not a good restaurant to have cosy experience.
But!!!!! ROTI BOM is crazy delicious👏❣️
I wanna come back later to try again this.
J. L.
One of the best Malaysian restaurants I've been to. Love the food especially the chicken satay and the roti.
N. H.
Sambal sotong is the best ! Even its too spicy but thats what make I want to come back again.
You can find real Malaysian food taste here.
It would be great if you can add some more special dish in the menu for local to discover Malaysian food ;)
C. M.
Love the food here.. but unfortunately no satay for today and rojak only available on weekend😞. Service is good and food is good. Highly recommend.
C. S.
Amazing satay chicken and rice
Equally as good banana roti and icecream
D.
Prata was crispy and nice. The sambal chilli was really good - wasn't neither too sweet nor uncomfortably spicy. However, I found the Murtabak (lamb) to be quite quite disappointing. Lamb meat was chunks of sausage meat which weren't very tasty. Dishes were also very overpriced for the quantity served.
D. T.
Good Nasi Lemak with Lamb Curry. Also had good chicken satay. Food is good but not stellar. I'm afraid I found the lamb curry to be a bit watery / weak compared to other places.
I. D. H.
Great food here - serving time is reasonable, and the portions are BIG.. especially the fried rice that can be eaten by two people.
The Nasi Lemak that we had was spicy and had hearty portions and the Kopi Tarik reminds me of home 🇲🇾
To get here, catch the free tram (#35) and alight at Elizabeth St/La Trobe St. Its a 3-5 minute walk.
By the way, not too sure of morning opening hours - but for dinner dining, they open at 5.30pm onwards.
R. H.
Great legitimate Malaysian nourishment. The roti canal and nasi lemak are more or less great. The roti tissue is tasty! It gets somewhat muddled to eat it however it's yummy. It gets occupied around noon, and it closes ahead of schedule (at 4 pm before reviving at night) so consider. Pleasant nearby Malaysian beverages on offer as well. Certainly suggest this spot on the off chance that you need great Malaysian sustenance!
P. G.
A must go to place if tou like asian food just as me. A nice place for catch ups, dinners, etc. we ordered the mee goreng, maggi goreng, and chicken curry with rice. Everything was lip smacking. We also ordered murtabak in starters which actually came after the mains, which was a lil disappointing. But overall the food sums it all. A must recommend is the teh tarik(malay tea). It will stich up your meal completely.
N. M.
I ordered through Mealpal application, tasty food and friendly staff. The portion of the food is exactly as the Mealpal pictures. I'll definitely go back again, highly recommended!
K. G.
Food is pretty good here, the fried chicken could use a bit more flavour but the curries & rice dishes were great. And so many delicious Roti's to choose from!
B. F.
A wonderful area with perspectives. Keep running with a culinary expert , this territory gives a surprising knowledge. We went to get a menu and sensations expedited by tastes can't be truly portrayed by expressions. Every single dish was a commitment.
L. M.
Malaysian "soul food" restaurant close to the shopping district of the Melbourne CBD. They seem to specialise in curries, satay, roti and Nasi lemak. There are also a limited number of rice and noodle dishes as well as a selection of traditional hot and cold drinks. The Kari Kambing was a standout.
M. Y.
Food was just mediocre, was not close to the taste of actual Malaysian food. I ordered the nasi lemak (coconut rice) topped with chicken curry, and there was way too little meat and too much rice. The proportions were not balanced, and the taste was just average, and it was definitely not worth the $15.
T. T.
Food is delicious albeit smaller portions compared to similar restaurants.
v. k.
We had roti cennai & rojak salad. The roti was deliciously buttery & the salad was surprisingly sweet but balanced with crispy fried pancake-like ‘crackers’.
If we had room, we would have had their satay as well.
Great authentic malaysian fare at amazing prices.
M. B. M.
do you like roti canai? then head to mamak, watch the cooks twirl the roti over their heads as you queue for the pillowy, crunchy roti. good stop also for awesome authentic malaysian food, but watch out for death by sugar in their tea tereks!
G. D.
I requested the nasi lemak and the Teh Tarik. The nourishment was a lot oilier than I could recall and the beverage was a lot better than I could deal with. I figure I may have outgrown this kind of nourishment since it left me feeling wiped out. I don't feel this debilitated after oily inexpensive food. Regardless, despite everything I think this is one of the better puts I know for Malaysian style roti, and I saw the holding up staff as agreeable and supportive. The costs are additionally very great. It is most likely progressively appropriate for a more youthful group that is searching for moderate, speedy nourishment and can deal with something extremely sweet or sleek.
S. p.
Great taste and fast service! Brought me back to late nights in Kuala Lumpur and Pelita street foods! I had mee goreng, original roti and teh tarik, total 27.50 aud.
J. T.
Came here about 6 before it started to build up with the crowd. First time trying the melbourne branch. We ordered the prawn salad with tofu, crispy chicken and the roti bread with the dips. The salad was by far my favourite. It had great balance and textures with the prawns and the coconut crisps. Would go back just for the salad. The chicken was moist but the seasoning on the chicken skin was quite bland which was a shame cause it seemed that the crispy skin would have been the feature of the dish. Roti bread was not as oily as others I have tasted. Unfortunately you can't buy the roti bread on it's own as you can in other Malaysian restaurants so we got the dips with it. Service was attentive and friendly. Would definitely go back again.
N. W.
We ordered 2 mains and a side dish, they all tasted great, but the price was super steep and we ended up still hungry after $40. Also the satay chicken was valued at $15 for six skewers, not a good deal.
V. L.
Cheap and cheerful, this place offers lots of options with generous serving sizes and fast service. For those that don't like spicy food, it may pay to double check your order has no chili in it (my companion was surprised with spices in her friend chicken which made it Abit difficult to eat). Also, save room for dessert!
Y. E.
The tastiest most authentic Malaysian food you will get in Melbourne. The staff are super nice. The food is always fresh and steaming hot. The atmosphere of the restaurant itself is vibrant and energetic. Family and friends laughing and enjoying a heart warming feast. It’s one for the ages. Truly a must-try.
K. C.
Basic Malaysian food with Indian influence. The satay is quite tasty. Safe option and good for sharing.
T. C.
Good authentic Malaysian food. The roti canai and nasi lemak are as good as it gets. The roti tissue (pictured) is delicious! It gets a bit messy to eat it but it’s very yummy. It does get busy around lunch time, and it closes early (at 2pm before reopening in the evening) so take that into account. Nice local Malaysian drinks on offer too. Definitely recommend this place if you want good Malaysian food!
P. K.
Had the Nasi Goreng take away as part of a mealpal subscription. Great take away food, as it's just as good after 10 minutes in a container. Really tasty with a good amount of heat and a decent wedge of lime to add some tanginess. Would definitely order again.
N. A.
They don’t have Laksa here, but I love the rojak. Roti cane also addictive. Will coming back for rojak and cane.
F. G.
The most wonderful Nasi Lemak I have ever tried in Melbourne. Closest to what I tried at Kuala Lumpur. Had the Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken as a lunch special item. The sambal was super tasty, had a flavor of belachan and not too spicy. Probably had a touch of tomato in it to tune down the heat. Chicken was juicy and tender. Curry was intense with spice flavor. The rice was full of coconut aroma. The portion is pretty big as well, which made up a very filling lunch.
E.
Roti here is freshly made which I love and why I keep coming back for more. On weekdays there's a lunch menu with good value for money roti+curry sets menus.
Service here is fast, sometimes so fast where even though you are just finishing off your meal, your dish gets taken away. There are typically lines to get in so try and get in before the lunch/dinner rushes!
E. K.
Good food but bad customer service. Took really long to give us food. Even some time they forget as well, when asked about that they just say sorry and move on
T. H.
Fantastic food at very affordable prices. Service was okay, everything was polished. Try the sambal king prawns and the roti with egg and onion.
B. M.
Little pricey for what you get especially if you order meat skewers. Roti and rice dishes always amazing. Meat skewers can sometimes be chewy. Staff friendly and always very accommodating.
W. L.
Drinks are a bit too sweet to my liking, however the sambal is one of the best I’ve ever had. If the food is not good enough just slap some sambal on it.
슈.
It's so nice! Everything is good :)
I satisfied! And I'd like to go again.
It's not expensive,reasonable price.
N.
Had the chicken curry, roti telur bawang and mee goreng. The flavour is quite good for a restaurant outside Malaysia. Service was fairly attentive and quick.
M. O.
First introduced my partner to this chain in Sydney, and I suspect it's a driving force I'm the reason we're still together. We never don't feel like it.
B. A.
Wow! Arrived 5 minutes before opening and people were already waiting outside. Inevitably, a couple of Yuppies didn't care for queuing and pushed in...
The menu is fairly narrow but the food is excellent. The Rojak is presented in a very modern style but had all the usual components. The Veg. Curry was a delight.
K. O.
Authentic Malaysian Taste, however their price has become more expensive, a bit too much for Malaysian meal.
B. L.
Very good food court quality.
Roti canai was excessively sweet and the mee goreng dish was average.
G. T.
Simple Malaysian hawker food. Watch them make the roti in the window. My fave: Rojak salad: Prawn and coconut fritters, fried tofu, hard-boiled eggs, freshly shredded yambean and cucumber, topped with a thick spicy peanut sauce. $3 to BYO (I pick up a bottle of red at Aldi 3 blocks away).
P. P.
Food was good and came out crazy fast.
b. S.
Good value, tasty food. But if you want cozy environment, I don't recommend it.
M.
Maggi goreng and fish curry were delicious! The teh tarik was great too! As good as anything you can get at a mamak in Malaysia. Their speciality is roti tisu which was amazing!
R. K.
Perhaps the best spot for a modest and delectable feast in the CBD. Ideal for a catch up with companions, particularly with the byo accessible.
A. B.
Decent Malaysian food at a reasonable price. Certain menu items can take a little longer to cook but the staff will generally tell you in advance.
The original prata was amazing, highly recommended but probably not enough on its own as a main dish.
Restaurant also suits a large group but might also result in a wait unless you can manage to organise ahead.
S. S.
The cafe is perfect, commonplace, administration is pleasant and effective. It was my first involvement with Malaysian sustenance so can't give any correlation. In any case it was great and delicious.
C. P.
Amazing. The line moved rapidly. Nourishment came rapidly. Chicken satay sticks were the best
J. C.
Roti Telur and beef satay - 100% authentic, as good as Clark Quay in Singapore. Best I’ve had in 20 years, excellent service. Very busy place but worth it.
j. A.
Frequent at this joint! Brings me right back to my home country. Pricey but worth the money. Personal favourite/recommended dishes: Chicken satay, roti chanai, roti bomb with ice cream for dessert (Sweet - Good for sharing), mee goreng, nasi lemak, nasi goreng, teh tarik and ice lemon tea
N. K.
Food is always good here but customer service can be better.
N. R.
Delicious halal food in Melbourne, portions were of good sizing and staff were very friendly .
α. C.
Little pricey. But fast service. Good, authentic Malaysian food.
M.
Good service, simple but great authentic food. Very impressed!
H. G.
Love food! Found a hair in my curry which I didn't order as an ingredient haha! PS. they replaced my curry quickly but the roti was bit soggy then as they didn't care to replace it 🤦♂️
S. K.
Food, ambience, service are good. Teh tarik was nice. I recommend the nasi lemak and mee goreng. My last night in australia is filled with good food by Mamak Restaurant. This restaurant is a walking distance from my hotel. Place is cozy and food is served fast and piping hot. A must try!
J. M.
We finally saw no line at this place and decided to try their dessert Roti. It was delicious, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the roti was thin, crispy, and perfectly sweet. We will definitely be back next time we see a Mamak.
J. L.
Full of favors. Recommend fired Chicken!!!Crispy and juicy!Roti is also good but less impressive as the fried chicken is so good!
J. L.
Mamak serves Authentic Malaysian food and the food is not greasy or too salty in my opinion. I order roti canai and nasi lemak. All delicious but definitely on the pricey side as compared to the other ones I’ve tried in Melbourne. The portion is decent, still depends on individual portion preferences.
J. C.
Great food! I loved nasi goreng. Price is affordable.
G. W.
Very nice quality Malaysians/Singaporean styled eatery. The nasi goreng has a good touch of spiciness and the teh tarik is one of the nicer ones around in Melbourne. There are also murtabak which is rare to find in Melbourne but at $15 and the portion is small I don't feel it is value for money.
L. R.
Tries the Nasi Goreng which tasted great! Along with an Ice Milo which is always good! They have many Malaysian dishes to suit your appetite.
H. L.
Good chicken laksa, much milder than other places. But I don't like my laksa too hot.
S. Z.
Highly recommended good Malaysian food. They have good maggi goreng
W. B.
Awesome. Line moved very quickly. Food came quickly. Chicken satay sticks were the best
A. M.
Great Malaysian food in the heart of Melbourne CBD. I love it. Great taste and good service too.
N. D.
Amazing. Second best roti in Melbourne, only to Penang coffee house!
M. M.
Fried rice I had was pretty big!!
Nice quantity of food, but the taste was so so.
A. S.
Ordered nasi goreng which was good. Ordered mee goreng and requested the fishcake slices to be removed, however, it came WITH lots of fish cake slices. Also ordered murtabak which was good. Limau ais and Milo ais were both 3/4 ice and 1/4 actual drink. Felt like a rip-off.
D. L.
Had a Nasi Lemak with curry chicken. Taste was not bad but the portion is slightly disappointing for $15 with just two tiny pieces of chicken.
Service was quick and friendly.
L.
Best roti in Melbourne and flavoursome chicken curry!
N. C.
Busy place, for a good reason. Satay quality is hit and miss when there are alot of customers
Good gluten free options.
Card surcharge applies.
J.
Nice and quick. I ordered Mee Goreng. Tasty but salty
j. c.
Second visit. The girl at the door was friendly but the one who took our order was bit overpowering. Had to ask for water. Not served automatically today.
A. N.
Quick service, tasty food. A little bit overpriced. Koppi tarek was refreshing
d. m.
Randomly stopped in here for dinner with friends and were glad we did!! Smells were divine and no wonder - the food was fabulous ! I had the lamb curry and roti and it was brilliant - flavoursome and yum with beautiful fall apart meat ! Grabbed some beers from the local Asian supermarket and we were good to go!! I would definitely come here again !!
C. S. M. P.
Good delicious food and daily special well priced
L. C.
Lovely Malaysian food, and the Ayam Goreng was delicious!
Y. R.
Do you remember the first restaurant that you loved eating at in Melbourne, with your darling husband? 🤩
It is this for me! ♥️
And you know we celebrate Mamakversary?! And it's 7th yr running!
So do you want me to say anything else?!!
Enjoy !!!
j. p.
The best Malaysian food in Melbourne have had it a few times and was a great experience with good price you could get great and delicious food
K. Y.
Food here is good... taste is authentic and price is reasonable considering the restaurant is in the city. Would be better if portions were a bit more generous but overall a good place to dine at if you are craving for Singapore or Malaysian food. Service is excellent too!
S. T.
Outstanding taste of food.and sitting arrangements.
A. L.
My husband and I live in the CBD so are spoilt for choice when it comes to Malaysian food but we always order from here. The best Mee goreng I've ever had and we always make sure to have one of their banana rotis with curry sauce. Awesome, awesome food, friendly staff and great value for money. A big recommend.
N. N.
Rojak and mee goreng were really good
B. C.
Great Malaysian food. Terribly expensive unless you've got done promo code.
Y. L.
Friendly staff and tasty food. Menu is small but has the gems of Malaysian food.
F. K.
The nasi goreng i had from here was almost the same as i had nasi goreng from Malaysia. Would visit again for nasi goreng.
Cendol amazing. On point my bois.
Thank you for serving us 🙏🏽
E. K.
Fantastic Malaysian restaurant. It is always busy at peak times! Can't go past the roti canai, ayam goreng (fried chicken), and Kari kambing (lamb curry). It is one of the few places that also offers dessert roti tisu and roti pisang (banana).
N.
This is a great place for good quality and decent Malaysian food. Food came out quickly and the portion size was excellent. Only issue is it can be difficult to get the attention of the waiters who don't seem to be looking at the tables and this wasn't on a busy day. Will return again as the food is really good.
A.
The best Malaysian rotis! My FAVOURITE one is the roti Kaya! Genius!
C. L.
Quick friendly service, food was ok but not particularly tasty or outstanding in anyway.
Context: weekend lunch date with husband, paid via gift card, we shared the mee goreng and roti canai
R. C.
Delicious curry and the roti is very crispy and flaky. Satay chicken is good but it’s not the star of the show. The food portion is not very big but it’s way worth the price you’re paying for.
J. F.
Amazing quality food. Comfort food is outrageously good and served with great service. Had a delicious meal while sheltering from the rains, highly recommend.
J. W.
Came here again today having visited about 18 months ago when there was a cue out the front on a Saturday night. Today during lunch hour, Mamak was about half full and doing s good trade with quick turnover or tables. The lunch specials are worth looking at with considerable savings of $'s. $14 for my lamb curry and rice that was a generous portion size.Staff are efficient and friendly. Water in the table straight away, order taken as soon as I'd looked at it and knew what I wanted.
O. J.
I love the quality of food here and the service. Please maintain it. after many years I finally tasted a good Malaysian Rice and Rotti.
J. L.
Absolutely brilliant experience. Got in early around 6pm to avoid the dinner rush. Sure enough the crowds started pouring in soon afterwards.
Family of 4 with 2 young kids. Seated promptly and service very accommodating and friendly. The chicken satay was superb and the sauce fantastic. I only wish they served it with the little cubes of rice along with the onions and cucumbers. It may have helped the kids spark their appetite. Purely from a parent's point of view since our kids don't eat that well. I think they would have liked eating rick on a stick.
The roti with egg was amazing. I should have ordered two servings because my wife ate half of it! If it had cheese as well it would have been perfect! The Maggi mee goreng was a bit salty and lacked spice but the portions were good. The highight was definitely the lamb curry. Tender, juicy and full of flavor. Kids loved it as well which was a welcome surprise. Also ordered kangkung belacan for nostalgia. I could eat just that vegetable dish with two full portions of rice any day of the week.
Overall the taste was wonderul and the portions were adequate. I would definitely go back to get my Malaysian food fix.
S. S.
S.
One of the best Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne. Good food at very reasonable price. They have different kinds of Roti, that I liked. Less number of items in the Menu, however whatever I tried, I loved it all. Quality and quantity of the food is up to the mark.
Service:
Service was quick and wait staffs were friendly and attentive. A very clean place.
Not So Good:
The place is super loud. If you want to talk to someone, you have to scream. Don't even think about making a phone call from there. It’s a place for a quick lunch or dinner, not for a relaxed dine.
Overall rating 3/5.
K. B.
Had this before the lockdown. They practiced great health and safety protocols while keeping the wait time reasonably low. B+ Asian cuisine!
K. K.
Bit spicy for us..but Nice Malaysian restaurant
S. R.
A well kept establishment that is clean. Waiters are attentive and efficient. Menu has a good selection of Malaysian food, however taste-wise I would rate it 3 out of 5 stars — it is just okay, nothing fantastic. The nasi goreng I had required the addition of chilli to give it a stronger flavour for me but I get that the restaurant has to cater to the locals’ tastebuds. Good enough to fill up a hungry tummy. The cendol and teh tarik was too heavy on the milk and lacked the actual tea flavour. I may or may not come back to this place.
M. C.
I ordered the nasi lemak and the teh tarik. The food was much oilier than I could remember and the drink was much sweeter than I could handle. I think I may have outgrown this sort of food, because it left me feeling very sick. I don’t even feel this sick after greasy fast food. Nonetheless, I still think this is one of the better places I know for Malaysian style roti, and I found the waiting staff to be very friendly and helpful. The prices are also quite good. It is probably more suitable for a younger crowd that is looking for affordable, quick food and can handle something very sweet or oily.
A. S.
Enjoyed the food.. very close to what I have had in KL. It is a bit on the expensive side but they good is fresh and tasty
k. H.
Great food. Lots of options.Good service. To get the parking could be little challenging. Items are bit pricey compared to portion.
J. W.
Great food and atmosphere, will visit again sometime soon! I loved the chicken satay sticks the most, very scrumptious and tasty. The tender meat is cooked well.
Would recommend to family and friends!
B. O.
This is the third time we are here. Didn't have a good experience when they opened, but the food quality has improved so much. Service is good, friendly for family too.
We had the satay and mee goreng. It is by far the most authentic and tasty Malaysian food we've tasted in Melbourne. Would definitely come back again.
H. S. S.
Their roti and curry sauces are authentic and yummy. Here the food prices are slightly more expensive compared to other places serving similar Asian "street food". While their menu is not as diverse as say Papa Rich what they serve is generally very delicious and good quality. Getting a table is relatively easy in the Melbourne outlet even on a Friday night.
M. Y.
Great roti made right in front of you.
K. T.
My first visit today, and it's truly satisfying Malaysian food at its best, i ordered mee goreng and nasi lemak, both are very 😋 yummy. Their staffs is highly trained, professional and attentive. Even the overall restaurant hygiene is very good, for all the good reasons, they deserve 5 stars, and i rarely give restaurant 5 stars, highly recommended this restaurants. Will definitely come back
D. N.
Very delicious food. The best Nasi Goreng (Malaysian Fried Rice) I've ever had in Melbourne.
Serving size is a bit small, but it's good in the way that prevents over-eating :). I was still feeling hungry after finishing my meal, but after a while, I didn't feel like I want to eat anything more and was really full.
A. J. (.
Mamak is a wonderful, cheap, and excellent way to smash some quality Malaysian food in the CBD.
It's not a place to relax and wile away an evening, nor is it a place to soak up the atmosphere. (plus they don't serve alcohol!!)
But it offers exactly what you need when it comes to the food. Excellent quality, every time.
I'd highly recommend that you take some time to stand out the front and watch roti being hand thrown too....it's mesmerising.
C. C.
Delicious food but poor service, quite loud and little atmosphere. Not as good as it used to be sadly.
y. s.
The place is spacious, lots of tables, looks crowded .. I eat nasi lemak which is aspired from the hotel, the distance from the mercure is not far. Nasi lemak that I eat is not the same as the nasi lemak in Singapore and Malaysia. The side dishes is only sliced cucumbers, anchovies, half boiled eggs, chili sauce. The price is Aud 11 ... fried chicken adds Aud 4 ... it tastes much better in its home country ...
C. M. M.
We ordered chicken & beef satay and egg rotis. The chicken & beef satay was good and tasty, as well as the peanut sauce, however the portions were very small for price. The egg rotis were quite plain and not too big a portion either. Perhaps I am comparing it to Singaporean portions and prices, however I was not convinced with the quantity/price ratio.
B. R.
Their Mee Goreng was authentic Malaysian mamak style noodles. And roti canai was also awesome.
E. “. S.
A very nice and busy restaurant with tasty cultural Malaysian food. The lunch specials are very wonderful and everything fills up the stomach excellently. Staff don't interact much and answered simple questions that were asked to them from customers.
M. N.
A very popular place for Malaysian cuisine. I had the nasi lemak with lamb curry and sambal prawns, chendol and rojak. They weren't too bad but I've definitely had better. I found the nasi lemak too salty although the peanuts and ikan bilis were done quite well. The sambal was ok but it lacked something. The lamb curry was rather watery and seemed to be missing some oomph. The portion size was just right. The green chendol texture wasn't quite chewy enough although the gula melaka coconut milk blend was just right. The rojak wasn't anything I would rave about either. Friendly staff and very accommodating of a group of 14. We got in just before the crowd because a few minutes later, the place was packed.
S. T.
Great food, tasty & friendly service. Sambal was flavourful without being too spicy hot. Delicious & highly recommended.
T. “. W.
Drop by for some of the tastiest Malay cuisine served in Melbourne. This place can get really crowded so try booking ahead. At lunch hour you might have to stand in a queue waiting for your turn but it's really worth the wait. The curries are lovely, worth every $. Overall one of my favorites.
r. t.
Love it everytime I visit. Excellent service and super Malaysian food. Roti canai and fried chicken my personal favourite. A very busy restaurant, might have to wait sometimes too get a seat but it's worth the wait
D. I.
Easily the best Malaysian food anywhere in Australia! Prices are very good and the service is quite quick! Roti Canai and chicken curry with the hot milk tea! Amazing! Can't recommend this place highly enough.
R.
Really great Roti, sauce also pretty good. Chicken Satay excellent, well worth the wait. The meat was so fresh and cooked just right. The satay sauce was however ordinary, with the peanuts in it soggy and even slightly stale. Curry Chicken was the most satisfying as both the meat and the city sauce were excellent. However the 2 serves of plain rice we ordered with it can only be described as poor, being cold, dry and a little hard. It was only around 7.30 on a wednesday evening. How could it be so poor? The Rojak was fine. The veggies were very fresh. The sauce was a little bit too sweet for my taste, would have been better if it were served at the end of the dinner, ie s desert. So, overall, a mixed experience, which could be easily fixed with more attention to the quality of the sauces and rice.
P. F.
Go for the food, very authentic and very good, service is chaos in a busy environment but just put your zen on and enjoy the flavours
D. C.
Food was packed with flavour and prices were affordable. I'm not usually a big fan of spicy foods, but I couldn't stop eating (and sweating!).
I hope they will stop giving out plastic straws for everything in the near future!
E. H.
Better than it was a few years ago.
I used to go to Mamak when it first opened in Melbourne and thought the curry potions were too small and also very salty.
Went back there today as a friend wanted to eat there, I was hesitant, but was pleasantly surprised at the quality of their Nasi Lemak.
Still feel that Malaysian drinks are overpriced for what they are - $4.50 for an iced tea with lime (Teh O Ais Limau)
C. B.
The food is awesome.. I loved it
L. M.
Tasty and fresh stuffed roti (egg and onions for a vegetarian option). $8.50 with 2 curry sauces. A relatively small dish though, which I should have expected, but it should be slightly cheaper (I would have bought more if the price wasn't misleading). I dare say I'll give it more stars next time I return though. Tasty curry sauce.
T. N.
I love the Roti Tissue here! Get it with condensed milk and curry. It's soooo good!
P. J.
Food is OK, the most authentic tasting Malaysian food I've had in melbourne I guess? It's 3-4 times the price for the same thing in Malaysia tho. But I guess that's most of the Malaysian food here in Melbourne...
K. N.
Went with a group of work colleagues. Quick service. Good food. Reasonable cost.
A.
Perhaps we went with very high expectations given the high regard for Mamak or we went on a day that was not their best. We went for lunch and ordered the chicken curry + rice (Kari ayam) and prawns in Sambal + rice (Sambal udang) and Teh tarik. The fare was very average. We've been fortunate to have many excellent Malaysian places in Melbourne so we've had much better Kari ayam. The prawns were fresh but slightly under done for our liking. The rice was under cooked and the grains were slightly hard. Unfortunately not impressive for us.
J. A.
I used to go to the mamak in Sydney CBD and chatswood. Loved it over there. Since I've moved to Melbourne now I decided to visit the mama here. Trust me I wasn't disappointed. The taste was consistent in all their restaurants. Good job keep it up :)
N. C.
Quick fast service. Reasonably priced and delicious.
I. R.
Worth the trip from Adelaide.
Fast and good service. Ayam Goreng was excellent. Roti A1 Nasi Goreng true Malaysia flavor
Sunday lunch very busy.
We will return for more!
-.
Delicious and cheap Malaysian cuisine. Banana roti ($8.50) made fresh in the window is always good for show. Mee goreng ($14) is made with seafood. Ginger tea ($4) is worth a try. Service is very fast with many dishes landing on the table within five minutes
J. L.
Revisited today as we were craving some Malaysian favourites. In past visits, we always enjoyed their roti, curries and Mee Goreng. The menu has enough options to satisfy the varied palettes.
We both ordered the Mee Goreng, with normal and Maggi noodles. Lots of flavour with a balanced amount of chilli to give it a tasty kick and we loved their good use of spices to give the dishes an appealing fragrance. The Teh Tarik (tea with sweetened condensed milk) was delicious.
As someone who grew up in Malaysia / Singapore eating Cendol regularly however, this dessert didn't pass today. The very important jelly-like "noodles" are normally a little chewy but today had the consistency of mashed potato! The coconut milk and gula melaka (palm sugar syrup) were really watery, so there was little flavour.
Casual dining with quick, on-point service makes this a relaxing place to get a tasty bite. It's not the most comfortable spot if you're on the stool, so better suited for a quick bite than a long lunch/dinner catch up.
N. B.
My favourite is the tasty Nasi Lemak - aromatic rice comes with all the condiments (boiled egg, fried anchovies, cucumber, roasted peanuts and nice spicy sambal). The fish in the fish curry was fresh. Love the okra and eggplant in the fish curry. Nice fluffy roti canai. Nice satay and peanut sauce (eat it while it’s hot or it will get chewy). Fast service. There usually are tables available if you walk in. Price is a little high for certain dishes.
T. n.
Loved every bit of the food here... reasonably priced and good portions... the food and taste were on point.. going back here again!!
C. T.
The satay is the closest you can find to back home!
T. N.
-Delicious food.
-Authentic Malaysian food
-Best mi goreng noodles
-Staff might need more training on customer service
-Affordable price meals range from $12-$18
C. L.
Love the Rojak, always do. Serving size seemed smaller than Sydney's Mamak though, but it has been a while. Still, great food, great value!
Y. A.
Authentic Malaysian food!
Love it! Although it was a little bit pricy, but it worth the money! 👍🏻
B. B.
Very busy Malaysian eatery, so the volume can get quite loud during peak dinner time! As long as your not after a quite spot then you'll be fine. The menu is small I'm comparison to other Malaysian places bit they do each one pretty well rather then have 101 options where only a good handful are even worth trying! You can't go wrong with the roti and satay sticks here plus we usually get the mee goreng, sambal kang kong and the train too. Yum
R. B.
Tasty food and reasonable prices. Various options for roti lovers. Teh halia is a must try if you love ginger in your tea.
P. S.
The go-to joint for fairly fast authentic Malaysian street food. Chock full of flavour, great roti variants, satays, and other enticing bud-tantalising dishes.
K. T. -. S. T.
So delicious and tasty! We had the Roti, Nasi Lemak and the Mee Goreng! All absolutely delicious! ❤️ We’ll be back 100%!!!
M. A.
It was nice but the menu is quite limited. No beef rendang and no laksa. Otherwise the service is fast and the food is good. It is very popular and sometimes you may need to queue up to get a table.
B. T.
Inviting open-style kitchen at the front for all to see. Open for lunch and dinner times. Central location. Authentic Malaysian meals on offer. A bit salty with dried fried 🐟. Appearing to be popular with working people all around CBD.
S. H.
Very generous servings size. I’ve been told by by local Malay friends that this is one of the more authentic options in Melbourne. Great value lunch!
A. r.
Satay very nice, value for money, better book your table for Saturday or Sundays morning
M. S.
Place has got compact menu of popular dishes. Tried roti canai which was exactly as described in menu 'Crispy outside and fluffy inside' and roti telur was also good. But not many options out there for vegetarians as most of the rice and noodle dishes have sambal(contains shrimp). My friends had chicken satay and Kari ayam with rice. They loved Kari ayam, it was spicy and felt homely it seems. 😄
They also have BYO option with some additional cost
s. k.
I'm giving it 5 stars due to the nasi goreng flavour. service was super fast as I was here on the dot of opening at lunch. very tasty nasi goreng, one of my favourite rice dishes.
A. F.
Tasty food and very fast service. They have great lunch deals.
I. M.
We ate rujak, mie goreng, and satay (mix of chicken & beef). Only mie goreng suited for our taste. Rujak dressing and satay sauce was too sweet. Little bit savory wouldn't be harmful. Opposite to those, Mamak's mie goreng is delicious. Ingredients were authentic and it has the wok taste just like what we normally have in traditional Mamak's.
R. D.
Very busy Malaysian joint. The food is good, not great. The spices are a tad bit undercooked. However the rotis are awesome, best I have tasted in Melbourne.
Worth a visit for the rotis.
J. W.
First time trying Malaysian food and I reckon I couldn't have done it at any other place. Service was fairly quick considering how fast paced the place is.
Definitely going back!! 😊
A. L.
What place these days charge 2% for normal eftpos transactions? Are they seriously already not making enough with their above average prices ?
The food here is ok. Nothing outstanding but not bad as well. The roti is nice and i guess that's what they are known for. But all the other dishes are pretty average.
Service is rude and unfriendly.
They also charge an extra $2 on public holidays.
D. D.
Great food and huge portions that reasonable for the price that it is priced at. Would strongly recommend the roti bom if you would like a scrumptious and guilty dessert. Roti with huge amounts of sugar and planta for a blissful end to your meal
M.
Place was busy so got the takeaway. Had the Roti chani and nasi lemak. Both were good. Roti was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The sambal was the right spice
T. L.
Great roti bread and nasi lemak. Do not order the chicken curry though - there are small bone pieces in the sauce which is quite annoying. Great for family and friend gathering.
V. N.
Food is without doubt delicious. Ordered Nasi Lemak with lamb curry and Nasi Goren, 3 stars only because lamb curry was icy cold and Nasi Goren was very spicy despite telling them to make non spicy at all.
D. G.
Their Roti Canai is seriously amazing. It competes with the stores back in Malaysia - yes, it's that good. The prices are good, and well worth the money. Their Nasi Lemak and the Teh Tarik are also really good.
The menu isn't hugely populated, but it's better to have quality of dishes over quantity. For sure.
R. A. P.
The Roti Bom is the Best! Tasty, buttery, crunchy on the outside but gooey on the inside. Perfect combination with condensed milk🤤 We ordered Mee goreng, a piece of fried chicken and teh tarik enough to fill 2 hungry tummies. We’ll be back for more!
k. g.
The restaurant is clean, typical, service is nice and efficient. It was my first experience with malaysian food so can't gove any comparison. Nevertheless it was good and tasty.
J. N.
Order nasi lemak with fried chicken, a lamb mutabak and Milo Talik. The fried chicken taste so good, I will have again, in fact I would like to have it now. The chilli taste good too, some places the chilli taste salty, but this chilli is prefect for me. Rice is just right now and dry, some nasi lemak rice is too wet and sticky. Personally think the rice portion is too small, and lack of fragrant. The Milo talik is too sweet. As for the price, will be nice if is 10% cheaper or increase the portion then it will be perfect.
Y. W.
We came to the restaurant with open minds but i will say the food was good quality it is not cheap but quality is there. The service on the other had was friendly but not there for the patrons. With so many great restaurants in melbourne there is no sticking factor to Mamak so no need to return soon.
e. e.
after waiting at another restaurant around the corner for over an hour, we decided to try Mamak again as we had been there before.
we got seated right away, ordered within 5minutes and BAM the dishes came out like a ferrari, the chefs are super quick, food is excellent
The curry is very spicy for someone who eats mild, however very tasty.. the fresh malaysian bread they make (roti) is supberb, highly recommend it.
D. R.
Roti planta is buttery goodness.
M. W.
Went for dinner with a small group of friends.
Great food and atmosphere.
Servings could be a little larger especially for groups of 6 or more.
Prices are good.
J. K.
Great roti, Reasonably priced, and friendly staff
J. H.
Good quality tasty food at a good price. The satay is especially good so make sure you try it. The roti here is also amazing and made to order, not sitting about in a bain marie all day, also a must try.
N. M.
Come here for the roti canai! The best I've had in Melbourne so far, it's an authentic taste, and the curry that goes with it is delicious.
The roti canai is the highlight of this place, most other dishes lack flavor. I ordered a chicken curry with rice and the chicken was tasteless, the rice was dry and hard, and the curry was not authentic. Same thing with the mie goreng, it tasted like instant noodles. Even the roti telur was too firm and the egg overcooked and sulfur-ey.
Good service, standard Malaysian style restaurant.
A. B.
Noisy place, always busy.
Good mee goreng, but not the best (too much condiment and not enough noodles)
I took also a kind of bean salad, nice but too sweet.
Fast service and nice waiters.

Enjoyed my mamak food in Sydney sometime ago. So took my wife to this restaurant in Melbourne expecting it would be of equal quality. First...we arrived a bit early for dinner, so yes it was our mistake that we didnt notice the "Closed" sign on the door and since the door was open, we went in and were rudely told it was Closed and will open after 20 mins. We thought of going to some other restaurant for the night but because of my earlier mamak experience in Sydney, i still insisted on trying this out.
We both found Mee Goreng pretty tasty but the other food was just average. And Desert was too expensive and not that appealing.
Overall it was alright.
Next time if you are closed.. pls lock the door or ATLEAST shut it.
J. L.
We tried the original roti. The meal was well prepared and the sauces was tasty. Roti could have been bigger. Overall very nice place with good environment. Would come again.

Visited with an old friend from UK - first discovered the Mamak name in Sydney a couple of years ago - perfect cafe style sit down nosh - can't fault a thing - always top notch. Shared roti canai, kari lambing (lamb), kari ayam (chicken) plus mixed satay of chicken & lamb skewers - just phenomenal and great value for money in a country where eating out is becoming prohibitively expensive - don't get me started on Aussie produce prices, seafood, lamb etc... Anyhow, rant aside - if you want proper authentic family style Malaysian food suitable for any occasion - head to Mamak - there's something for everyone here - delicious!

Handmade roti that you can watch through the window. I'm a regular there and have tried many dishes. You definitely can't get by without their roti. Roti chanai for and the kari ikan (fish curry) are my usual go to favourites.
C. Y. T.
The best roti canai I have had in Melbourne. Slightly on the pricey side for roti canai but it's hard to get better quality ones. The service can be a hit or miss though. Sometimes you do have to wait for a table.
m. b.
The fish was not good and it had the raw smell.
T. T.
delicious! I had the sambal udang and it was the perfect amount of spice👌🏾 their satay chicken skewers are the best tho
J. C.
Great tasting Malaysian food. The portion is a bit small and a bit pricey too.
S. B.
Great food and very quick, but doggy service. My drink never came. They delivered food to the neighbour table they never ordered. The waitress did not know what "Lassi" is... So ok for a quick bite if you know what you are eating
P. V.
Would say it has the best Nasi Lemak I had in Melbourne, tasty authentic roti cannai, teh tarik and quite good cendol. Little more expensive but I think it is deserved.
J. A.
Roti and lamb curry were nice.
Mistake with the dessert (closing time) meant I didn't end up getting it. Taken off the bill when asked.
T. K.
Shared lots of roti and a mix of satay sticks amongst a few us. The roti is amazing. Would've loved a beer with it though. Didn't appear to have any alcohol for sale.
G. L.
I'm Malaysian. That being said, it is quite difficult to find food close to home. Ingredients are different and cooking styles vary. But I must say, the nasi lemak and mee goreng here is absolutely the closest to home as it gets. Kopi Peng was excellent as well. Would come back again.

One of our favourite places for a Malaysian food fix - they have a common variety of Malaysian common street foods like Nasi Lemak, Nasi and Mi Goreng, and Rotis. Generally pretty authentic although the consistencies of the dishes produced can be variable - usually still above average. We found the curries for the rotis can sometimes be too salty.
j. r.
Great traditional but accessible Malaysian food! Highly recommended. Generous servings, and everything is truly fresh.
F. V.
Top Class food though don't expect the serving people to smile. For us on the food and you will simply love it. Will visit again n try a few more dishes.
D. E.
One of the places I would stop by to have a meal whenever I head down to the city. Food is great and tastes like home, though the hot drinks are a bit too sweet. All in all, the food is worth the price.
Wish there were more on the menu and more branches around
Y. W.
For me, this is one of the best Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne. Foods are always great and quite simple. If you are in the city and crave for nasi lemak, roti chanai, make sure you visit this place!
A. L.
Seriously for the price this is amazing food. Try it and you'll be back. It is also BYO so bring your own wine. It's not fancy just enjoy the food
D. N.
Good value lunch with fast and efficient service. I recommend Nasi Lemak with ayam goering. This is often a breakfast dish in Malaysia...i love the ikan bilis sideserve!
L. B.
Excellent and friendly customer service. Food taste lovely and I am regular customer. Love the nasi lemak and the fried chicken. Not forgetting the roti canai that is made fresh.
Y. P.
Their Nasi Lemak is delicious. Restaurant is bit crowded most of the time. I felt that their staff could be more friendly with the customers. However I rate the restaurant high because of their food.
D. R.
Good food. Fast service.
K.
Brief definition of the word 'mamak': The 'Mamaks' are Malaysians of Tamil Muslim origin, whose forefathers migrated from South India to the Malay Peninsula centuries ago. The word 'Mamak' is from the Tamil language meaning maternal uncle, or 'maa-ma'. Mamak cuisine is a perfect marriage of aromatic spices and herbs. Mamak Melbourne has successfully replicated some of these delicious and unique dishes found in Malaysia today.
M. K.
Good authentic Malaysian food. The wait was a bit long outside so get there early or be prepared to wait in the queue. Food arrived in good time and staff were friendly and helpful.
r. w.
Great food and service, the portions is generous. Dipping for roti is way too salty for my taste, the roti is good though.
R. N.
I love the Nasi Lemak here. However, the migoreng, which is my favorite Malay food, is not really good. Recommend booking before coming.
k. p.
I usually have Lunch from this restaurant, they serve really good Malaysian cuisine, especially the Nasi Lemak, Mee Goreng and Nasi Goreng which are my favourites.
T. M.
The most amazing Malaysian food I've tasted. Will definitely be going again. Very reasonable prices too!
A. A.
If you want to remind your past travel to Malaysia, this restaurant is the place to be. It doesn't get whole experience though, as the place and the serve is typical asian food Place in Melbourne.
M. D. Z.
Best Malaysian around... Try the sweet roti cone for dessert... epic!
A. A.
Roti canai is fantastic. The fish curry served with the roti was beautiful. However, the mains were a too salty for my pallet.
T. C.
Food is always great and staff are always helpful. Definitely recommend visiting. Their roti is some of the best in the city. Line ups out the door everyday so go early.
R. S.
Being there 3 times and food is generally good but very limited choices so have to settle for the same few dishes. Ambience of restaurant is not great as everyone is jammed in as tightly as possible in small tables spaced very closely together
L. G.
The chicken curry is amazing. Beautifully tender and great flavour. The Roti is a must try also!
A. A. K.
Good Nasi Lemak.. I would say it is a bit expensive. Can't order less than 1/2 dozen satays.. can't mix chicken and beef satays if 1/2 dozen satays ordered
P. S.
Just ok food; nothing special. Went as a gmail and all our orders came separately. And some of the items were slightly cold. Had to try it, but I’ll avoid it next time.
J. N.
Very reliable. Roti is a must here: sweet, oily pancake-bread with delicious dipping sauces. Mi goreng and the curry really good too.
B. S.
Foods are tasty but it is a bit pricey. Totally understandable tough since it is located in prime location and opens quite late. Recommended!
J. P.
This place is great. The food tasted absolutely amazing and the staff are very nice. Definitely going back.
N.
Delicious authentic Malay food in Melbourne. the prices weren't too bad. The food was good. Staff were good.
I. M. R.
Probably the best place for roti canai. Made on site, fluffy and aromatic, just like they do in hawker stalls in Malaysia.
R. K.
It is a Malasian restaurant and had nice food there. Whatever I ordered, was tasty food. It is bit costly. And when I ordered for next item took a bit more time to serve.
E. M.
Yup, first time here and will definitely come back. Hade the Kari sayu - Vegetarian curry and it was delicious. Purfect portion size.
U. 1.
Food tasted very good. Majority of dishes are spicy. The place is a little bit stuffy and hot.
J. M.
Consistency is important. Always tasty and always fresh. No difference in quality between the Melbourne or Sydney restaurants. However, the Melbourne restaurant is bigger and not as busy.
B. P.
I like the Nasi lemak with ayam goreng. Teh Tarik is also good. Can be really busy and noisy in the evenings. Long queue at times but worth the wait.
W. A.
Food is absolutely delicious. Prices are low. Definitely coming back!
A. M.
Awesome roti as always, the sauce of the lamb curry was amazing but the lamb pieces weren't very nice, mostly just fat.
G. S.
The roti is divine - better than some I’ve had in Malaysia! Their satay sauce is some of the best I’ve ever had.
B. B.
Delicious. Uber eats available. But branch itself also in good location,(center of city) please also try fresh roti n tea from the spot.
N.
Delicious food and excellent service! Will definitely come again when visiting Melbourne 😊
A. A. S.
Food was nice. Served on time and staff was friendly and professional
V. v. p.
Teh halia was delicious and food so, so, nostalgically yummy.
N. T.
Good food but service can be slow as it's always busy and rice was charged as an extra with a curry??? Also includes 2%surcharge on credit cards wouldn't really call it a cheap eat.
K. B.
I grew up as a kid in Penang, Malaysia and this is the most authentic, best tasting feed I've had since the makan stalls on Gurney Drive all those years ago. Fantastic!
J. L.
When you crave Malaysian taste, Mamak is the go-to place. Tasty mee/nasi goren at a reasonable price in Melbourne.
I. K.
Come here all the time and always a great experience. 11/10 would recommend to anyone !
B.
Really good food, especially the satay. The lunch deals are cheap and served very quickly (looked like they had them premade out the back).
G. B.
Food is tasty and reasonably priced. Good place for authentic Malaysian street food.
a. k.
Good cuisine . Can be related to Indian food
A. R.
Average priced food, "healthier" versions of authentic Malaysian food. Always crowded and make sure to have your whole party with you when arrive
Y. P.
A good Malaysian restaurant. I tried Nasi goerang and found it to be reasonably good. Can get quite busy on weekdays, but has ample seating.
L. C.
We ate curry chicken nasi lemak ,good and quick service, food is authetic at resonable price.Sauce is tasty. They also have many choices of rosi.By the way,the white coffee is a little bit too sweet for me.
N. M.
Large portions, the 2 of us split a rojak, fish curry, rice and a roti and were more than full. Fish curry was really good!
C. W.
Awesome Malaysian food. I was taken the first time by a Malaysian friend. Try the slow cooked lamb curry, it's amazing.
A. B.
Great Malaysian food, but really poor Online Menu.
J. A. I.
Very tasty food and good service. Reasonable prices - I find the same consistent standards at Mamak in every city I go to.
p. g.
Been here twice now, and although the food is decent,I think there are other Malaysian restaurants around the CBD with better food.
M. T. H.
This restaurant never disappoints. Yummy Malaysian food and teh tarik at very reasonable price point. A highly recommended and reliable place.
S. k.
This is not the same it once was. Smaller portions and more expensive. If the quality was better than I wouldn't mind, but unfortunately service and food was a big let down for us.
A. L.
Good Malaysian food for cheap, served quickly. You'll need to arrive quickly too if you don't want to wait for a table, fills up quickly
A. F.
Some of the best Malaysian food in Melbourne. Nasi Lemak is really nice, and the roti are made on premises.
M. Y.
I ordered it by MealPal. It was ready when I arrived. Exactly as the same as the picture in MealPal application that you can't find it commonly in other restaurants. Very tasty. Highly recommended.
J. S.
Much has changed but the quality remains, stylish affair, helps reduce waste by creating dishes from ingredients that are often overlooked.
B.
Great food. Just remember it doesn’t open through the whole day. Opens at 11.30am for the first slot of the day and closes before the next one starts in the afternoon
C. T.
Good food, reasonably priced. No reservations so rock up early. Fried chicken and roti highly recommend
S. k.
Very busy place during weekday... Nasi georeng and fried chicken must try
Another than very slow food service... Overrall customer service need to be improve... Food content and quality is 5/5
J. L.
Best Malay hands down. Everything delicious. Always consistent. Fast and affordable! Teh Tarik hands down can drink this forever
F. B.
Great place, love and tried almost all the dishes.
v. s.
Roti Canai is awesome every time! As a Malaysian, I would vouch it beats most places in Malaysia in flakiness and freshness!
S. G.
Excellent Malaysian food. Highly recommend to try their chicken curry (it's spicy).
S. K.
very busy during lunch time but worth the wait. Roti Canai is must try. Everything is freshly made. will definitely go again.
S. S.
Maggie goreng...unique and yum!
I. T.
Ver authentic food. Excellent roti canai. But please, wash the staff uniforms, several staff members were stinking to body odor.
R. L.
I will go here just for the dessert! The banana roti is amazing. The other food is also good. Cheap with quick service.
A. H.
I need some warm wholesome Malaysian comfort food. So, this place gives you that and only that. No atmosphere, no music, just food
D. C.
Good, cheap Malaysian food. Not an extensive menu, but you can check it out online.
R. K.
Roti Chanai was authentic as always. However to pay $7.50 for one roti chanai seems excessive. Up from $4.50 not very long ago.
T. W.
Excellent food, excellent prices and very decent serves. Only downside is it can be quite a noisy environment when busy.
Y. R.
Excellent service and Malaysian food 🍱
s. p.
I liked the way they serve the dishes and their traditional chi.
S.
Great Malaysian street food.. visited this place a lot of times.. if u know good food you will also like it..
G. L.
Amazing Malaysian food! Great service. What else can I say?😊😊😊
A. S.
A great place if you want some Malaysian food, the service is fast paced and systematic.
M. G. R. (.
Love the food, except some of the staff are rude, specially at lunch when they almost closing around 2. Just put a close sign if you don't want to accept customers, rather than giving them a dismissive look and still accept them
R. R.
This place was so GOOD! I WOULD COME HERE AGAIN LIKE 50000000 TIMES IF I COULD NO REGRETS
m. n.
One of my go to restaurants. Docked a star because my sambal prawns were a little cold. But good as usual
i. i.
Drop by if you love your roti canai and satay!
K. C.
Was pretty good. Beef satay a bit too dry.
k. c.
Lamb curry is the best curry on this earth. The mutabak is amazing. Watching them make the roti and mutabak from the window is sensational
S. B.
Quick service, friendly staff, delicious food and great prices! Ate at both the Sydney and Melbourne restaurants.... yum!!!
j. b.
Been my favourite place for years! Fast service, reasonably priced and the food is SO good!
J. L.
Really good food for a decent price. The roti canai and nasi lemak are go-to dishes. And that sambal takes everything to the next level.
B. N.
Nice place to meet up. Service is good but needs a more extensive vegetarian menu.
P. J. M.
A good place for an indo/malaysian cuisine.
A. B.
Excellent curries, great sauces accompanying their rotis and their fried chicken is a highlight. Try the roti tisu for dessert
C. D.
Great food.. surly we'll come back again
J. M.
try their spiciest prawn curry with rice... wow its different... and tasty and yummy. Malaysian food at finest..
V. R.
Tasty , portions were small, not the best value Malaysian in the cbd.
B. K.
Amazing food! Accommodating staff. But tooooo noisy. Not good for toddlers
N. B.
great place to eat - hygenic fresh and basic i couldnt stop myself
J. S.
Super quick quality food
