It’s a pretty amazing pub. Expect a notch up on other pubs - sure there’s the front bar and tables out the front almost as though it’s a long lost cousin of Earls Court public houses, but the dining room is fully fledged classy cuisine and ambience that you’d expect in Melbourne’s greatest. Don’t miss this one. To date, it’s the best pub grub menu and experience you could ask for. Just ask to be in the dining room and not the front bar extension/corridor where you kind of feel not as much in the action.

Lovely gastro pub. Dining room had an old school vibe, with attentive staff and complimentary bread. Great place to take your parents and have an elegant three course meal. A few things on the menu seemed a bit expensive, but I enjoyed everything I ate.

I was amaz d to learn everything here was made in house by the kitchen brigade and then was worried that it wouldn't be up to the standard I expected but thankfully the meals are fantastic. Loved the Veal golden and crispy I was so pleased I'd ordered this timeless classic. The lamb dish also was the tastiest and obviously a lot of care went into the food both care with cooking and preparing the wonderful meals. The chef in the kitchen looked like she was enjoying herself too so I was pleased to see such joy and confidence. I was a only disappointed that there that there wasn't a better dessert selection. We settled on cheese and enjoyed our wines.

Knock out gastropub in a beautiful part of Melbourne. We visited for a family lunch and we're treated to a very high standard of service and food. We shared a charcuterie board and amazing house baked sourdough before digging into substantial mains. The food was great, even the kid’s burgers are served rare so be careful if that's not your bag. The wine and beer selection in on point and the pub itself is beautifully renovated. Great family celebration spot.

Came here twice on Monday night for the steak night. I must say I wasn't impressed with the services that I had from the bar staff. Both were with different staff member. There was no warm or friendly services at all .. and from the tones I've found them a little bit rude. The first guy was local and the second one was French. First I thought they just had a very long or rough day. But second time, I just thought maybe because I have a different race with them. Even my friends (who are not asian) who overheard the conversations had mentioned that the guy(s) was rude to me. However, the staff in the restaurant side was very friendly. I don't think I would come back to this place

My great Aunt has been a regular at O'Connells for an amount of time she'd probably rather I didn't mention. Recently it was her birthday and she was blown away by the quality of service O'Connells provided. I would say she's not exactly easily impressed, and she adores this place. She asked if I would leave a 5 star review while I shared a few drinks with her and some of her friends while I was visiting. She made a point of making sure I remembered the names of a few of the staff. Tony, the Chef ; Paul, the Barman ; and Emma, the Manager who between them made my great Aunt's birthday all the more special. Tony cooked some incredible food. Paul and Emma in particular really seem to go above and beyond. Honestly if you've gotten this far through my review it's probably hard for me to express in words how good this venue really is. Beers beer, and wines wine, but the incredible service and genuine appreciation for customers and friendship that I saw so strongly exhibited by the staff at O'Connells was nothing short of spectacular. This is a modern, easy on the eye venue with old fashioned service that is few and far between these days. I can't recommend it highly enough. Thanks O'Connells

Great meal but limited menu. We had a meal voucher for $100, when it came time to pay the waiter took the voucher and just said thank you. We did not get a receipt/account for our bill, I asked him did the voucher cover the meal completely and he told me it did and there was no credit due. We suspect this was not the case and left feeling ripped off. This ended an otherwise very pleasant night into us feeling disappointed.

5 stars for food. Sadly 2 stars best for service tonight. I know it’s the last night before lockdown but when your dropping good money you want the service to match. Sadly the French ginger waiter has zero personality and considering he had only three tables he could have done much better, if you choose not to leave water and wine on the table then you better back it up with the service to match, I hate having an empty glass. The manager walks around with blinkers and doesn’t make eye contact making it hard to get anyone’s attention, seemed everyone cared more for the rowdy loud table in front of the kitchen pass they were so loud swearing there heads off that made for a really average last dinner before lock down. We then sat with empty glasses, empty mains plates in front of us for 15 mins. By this time I was over it. I would have orders more wine, more water, dessert and I Always finish with port. Could have easily made an extra $100 off me and a good tip. Sadly you got neither. As I said incredible food let down tonight by less than average service.

If you love casual dining with a hint of white tablecloth service, this is the place to go. The menu is outstanding, wine selection if amazing. A little pricey, but well worth it if you have visitors and want to take them to an up-market pub meal. Service is perfect too.

Ambiance was enjoyable and staff were very knowledgable. However the meals were "OK" and did not reflect the hype or price. We found the menu restrictive. We had phoned about a week before to advise that one if our diners was allergic to onion and garlic and were assured it would not be a problem and chef would be advised. When reminding our waiter when menus arrived, we were told that it would be very difficult to accommodate our fellow guest and she could select from only 3 dishes. Very disappointing when you take time to consult with the restaurant in advance. Will not return.

This is a lovely corner hotel. Beautifully kept with plenty of character. The food was delicious. The bread is baked on site and served with an olive tapenade-type butter (I could've eaten the entire loaf!) My friend and I shared the lamb shoulder and it was amazing. It was tender, melt in your mouth, packed with flavour, with some crunchy bits on top. Perfect! The accompanying greens and mash were equally tasty. I'll have to visit again and squeeze in a dessert - I watched a few being served and they looked good! Thanks guys, my friends and I have a great night.

Been a patron of this pub for 30 years and have seen many owners come and go , the staff generally are very competent and friendly - some are a bit snobby - the food needs to be seriously looked at ... they could do with more variety We had a Shiraz today that's costs under $14 a bottle in licensed grocers it was $14.50 a glass ?????. Getting too greedy !!!! There are a couple of pubs in the area " The Palace and the Railway that have got their acts together serving good food and reasonably priced alcohol... it seems the owners don't care about their patrons - or good staff , there has been a huge turn over of excellent staff as long as the money's coming in . That seems to be the main incentive !
