Comments of Rice Paper Scissors

Popular Thai restaurant. Lots of vegan options. Special is $45 per person for 5 dishes. Good variety and could not fault any dish. Fresh quality ingredients. Chose a range with salad, curry, vegetables, fish and beef accompanied by rice. Interesting desert menu but we were too full to try. Interesting that they neither served tea nor coffee. Seating inside and out on hardware. Servers were excellent.
L. T.
We had the vegan menu and I have never tasted such delicious food. So fresh and tasty. Very generous portions too with the share plates. The cocktails were so good too. Great service also. Cannot wait to go back 😋
K. B.
Fantastic dining experience. A set price for 5 dishes per head which is great for larger groups as the staff make sure you have enough for everybody to have each dish. You can also order separate meals if you prefer. Drinks were very reasonable and the atmosphere was great. Car park opposite.
M. K.
Amazing. We had the banquet style for 2 and every dish received the collective "Mmm". Cannot fault any of the food we had. Awesome atmosphere and staff. We will be back to work our way through the menu!

1000% Visiting Again ASAP
Ordered 5 dishes ($40pp): Crying Tiger, Sticky Pork Belly, BBQ Lamb Ribs, Phuket Calamari, and Crab Salad. Yo.. they were legit all so delicious. I vouch for all these 5 dishes - definitely try them all, you won't regret it. They all stood out in their own special ways. I was genuinely blown away by their Phuket Calamari. So soft and juicy - never had calamari that soft before. Just heavenly. Don't forget to grab their Grilled Malaysian Roti! I wasn't super keen at first but man, it was incredible. One of the best rotis I've ever had, especially with their special dipping sauce.
I really can't wait to visit again! Superb in every way!

We went there with our friends for lunch. You can order a set menu and choose 5 dishes for each person. I think it’s a good idea.
Also they have a lot of vegan options. You have to try the vegetable curry as It was so yummy. Anyway, everything was delicious. We ordered ceviche, barramundi , Bao ban and calamari ( scroll down for the pictures).
It’s a very good Asian fusion restaurant.
S. L.
Amazing vegan menu. Tofu and pineapple ceviche is a must have. Would have to say curry and Bahn mi is a bit of a hit-or-miss. In particular, the curry somehow didn’t come with rice but the vegetable pork belly dish did which resulted to a lot of wasted curry. The vegan pork belly was really good but had to pay an extra $4 despite being in the set menu.

Been here a few times and always a grand experience. Staff always very human, friendly and attentive. Cocktails always first rate. Food always amazing. All for pretty good value considering location and quality. An absolute fave!
D. E.
Honestly a fantastic experience, whether you're inside or out it's just great. And the staff is nice and easy going. As first timers we were lucky to get Josh as our server, he was super nice and helpful when it came to the menu as well. It's a must try!
D. S.
Adding a new review, visited the restaurant again and had 5 new dishes:
1. Smoked Pineapple Ceviche: The winner dish!
2. BBQ Eggplant Salad: repeat dish, still so good!
3. Mock Duck Banh Mi
4. Sticky Soy Tofu
5. Thai Yellow Curry
My mission of finding vegetarian food in Melbourne is on its track with this mind blowing vegetarian feast. Thanks once again!

Old review:
What an incredible restaurant. Really great variety of dishes! The BBQ eggplant salad was one of the best dishes I have ever had along with the Beetroot curry! Really unique and flavourful.
T. L.
Went here for dinner, they have interesting Asian fusion dishes. You could either order each dish separately, they also offer 5 dishes for a set price per person (assuming it's for two people). The food is well presented with good flavour. We found the staff to be very welcoming and polite.
Would recommend!
G. L.
Very creative menu, great service. Every dish was beautifully designed and packed with flavours
J. K.
Was really happy to find this place! Scrumptious, zingy and beautifully presented Asian street food in a very appealing, funky atmosphere. Impressive selection of gluten free options, including amazing gf fried chicken!! Drinks list was great as was the service! Highly recommended!
B. P.
Absolutely magnificent. Have been to the Fitzroy one and the old venue and it’s such a great concept and the food is always so so good. Menu is amazing with so much yum on it it’s hard to choose 5 ( I always choose 6). Service was great, super friendly. Everything was just great. Do yourself a favour
P. O.
Fantastic food.... really great selection and gives you the option of sampling a wide range of dishes.
无.
Love Love Love the dinner experience! Really nice food, music, friendly staff and great cocktails!
K. P.
Great service and delicious food - interesting spin on traditional dishes! The wait time between dishes could be faster.
K. R.
Very nice food, love the 5 dishes set menu! Once you finish all five dishes you're sure to be full👍 I love that you can pick whatever you want for the dishes as well. Only down side was that I was a little disappointed that we didn't get normal stemmed wine glasses, but got the stemless cups instead. I would describe this place as a more upscale bar/dining so was expecting nice glassware. Other than that the staff were great and food was delish. Would come again
C. D. A. G.
Good customer services, willing to explain the menu and dynamics of the restaurants. Food was average, some dishes better than others. I think some dishes don't match the price in terms of size, so it can be expensive.
S.
This place never disappoint 😁 LOVE the beef brisket & lamb ribs 😋 i find that the sticky pork belly is a bit too dry but overall all dishes are full of flavour 👍
M. K.
We had the vegan banquet with 5 dishes. I’m a total meat lover, so the fact that I was blown away by at least 4 out of the 5 dishes says a lot! Everything was so so good! Our top two would probably be the samosa salad and beetroot curry. Ooo ooo and the steamed rice cakes! Like I said, we loved absolutely everything!
To top it off, the servers were super gracious and so nice to chat with.
Definitely recommend it.
T. S.
We loved Rice Paper Scissors! Firstly the staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. Thank you to our host who made spade for us, and the unforgettable Rosey who gave us terrific advise and who was overall so welcoming. The the food - wow. The prawn crackers were something special, the sticky tofu delicious, and the Thai chicken was especially tender. Even the rice was top level. Can't wait to see I eat here again.
K. S.
I have been wanting to come to this restaurant for a long time and I must say the food did not disappoint. Portion is just right as well.
J. L.
No doubt this will always be a good dining spot if you're looking to try a lot of dishes in one sitting. The menu and dining format is enjoyable and reasonably priced. They're not wrong when they say no one leaves there still hungry. Cocktails are good, try their bloody mary. Food standouts are the lamb ribs and spicy beef. Servers are great, however the hosts can be bit more accommodating. There were four groups at the entrance when we got there, all waiting to be seated. Not really a big deal but it doesn't look good when you have two hosts and a server seeing the crowd but not even greeting anyone or acknowledging that they're there. There was also a bit of a wait on some of the dishes coming out that they had to give us a roti on the house because our orders were taking a while. This wouldn't be such a big deal had one of the hosts not sternly said that our table was on a strict hour-and-a-half time limit. Maybe she was just having a bad day. Either way, doesn't reflect well when the stand out memories from this trip was the subpar host and the long wait on food.
A.
Had lunch here, around $35/pp, five courses for 3 ladies and they provided just the right amount. The staff were super friendly. And due to the covid restrictions it was nice and quite to sit inside. Didn’t use any filters on the photo. Loved the red meat and lobster rolls😍
A. F.
We've been here twice in the last few months, both for birthday occasions and each time, everyone was impressed. There were promises of bringing their own family or friends. Once again, we enjoyed our lunch set meal. To start off, the Thai fried chicken was wonderfully spiced with a chili mayo dip. Second up was the fried barramundi with apple salad. The salad provided that fresh, acidic-sweet counterpoint to the fish, which made it a wonderful pair. We had roti and the peanut sauce which came with it made it shine on its own. The crying tiger was amazing as we placed melt in your mouth beef in beds of large leaves, the citrus sauce giving it that blooming punch of comforting flavour. The calamari in duck egg sauce and beans was probably the weakest dish for us, and unless you're familiar with duck egg, would be largely overwhelmed by everything else in the menu. Ending our meal were servings of sticky pork belly, hiding beneath some mung bean shoots but nonetheless a bright note in our meal. There were seven of us and we were very satisfied with the servings. At $35 per person for the set meal of 5 dishes, you can't beat it, but note that they charge for rice and roti separately. The yuzu-whisky cocktail was also delicious and refreshing for those who had it. I'm always very impressed by this place, a well-oiled machine churning out great food, good service, amazing value in the CBD. We will be back for more special occasions for sure!
N. W.
We had our work end of year dinner here and it didn't disappoint. A great selection of South East Asian inspired cocktails, and a delicious assortment of food. They cater to both meat-lovers and the vego crowd with something for everyone. The staff were friendly and helpful with varying degrees of experience. Overall it's a great place to dine on Hardware Lane.
S. F.
Absolutely amazing foood, lots of vegan options which are SO GOOD. Great service and friendly staff. Opted for the feed me menu and it was absolutely worth it. Will definitely visit again.
Took a long time to get the bill out though. Had to literally go back in to remind them.
M. M.
We had the banquet for 2, $45 for 5 dishes. Service was attentive and friendly, food came out quickly so we didn't go hungry at all. Will definitely come back again.
M. Y.
Delicious food, great value for money and good service. We took up the 5 dishes for $45 option and had the Thai beef curry, fried chicken, sticky pork belly, tempura buns and 'something green'. Cocktails were nice but nothing too special
A. J.
All dishes are delicious and made with fresh ingredients. Definitely try their salads. They are delicious. The menu overall is very different which is refreshing. Giving one star less as the portion sizes are small which compels you to go with the sharing option. But food is good.
V. M.
Came here with the family and caught up with friends for dinner.
When we arrived the venue was busy but we booked ahead so had no issues.
Staff were friendly and we were seated quickly with our food and drink orders taken quickly with both arriving quickly.
Outside your views are of a high rise carpark and McDonald's.
We ordered a variety of dishes that were reasonable however I wasn't totally blown away... Everything was ok but not enticing enough for me to want to come back.
A. N. (.
I just love everything about this restaurant. My recommendations is King Fish Cracker and Smoked Pineapple Ceviche also make a booking before. Everything was so delicious that I forgot to take a picture, just have for the drinks.
F.
That was an amazing experience. First time for me and it was so delicious. The staff is so friendly! Hardly recommended :)
K. K.
Oh my goodness! How amazing is this place?? The food are so delicious, the chef and staff are amazing. The ambiance of the place are very comfortable and the lightning set up the vibe! 🌝☝️ 5 star for this restaurant! Will definately come back again!
T. T.
Great place, great vibe and customer service. Came here Friday lunch time, booked table on their website. Seated at the bar and ordered sharing menu for 2, in total 5 dishes. The dishes are pork buns, soft shell crab salad, crispy pork belly, crying tiger, and thai fried chicken. I have to say the winner goes to the soft shell crab salad. So much flavor! Also, the pork belly was so crispy and fragrant! Recommended to try!
r. p.
Options were less (in cbd restaurant)also no lamb/goat/crab.
chicken/fish/pork were available.
Food was ok to Good .
of all items ordered :
Best -Thai yellow curry was yum
Worst - BBQ chicken - very salty .
Waiters were kind.
Overall good experience.
K. A.
Great food and friendly staff. Was great to eat on the terrace in Hardware Lane and watch the people walk past.
J. N.
We had a good time here and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately found a hair in our dessert at the end of the meal, but they were very professional, apologied and quickly gave us a new dish and did not charge us for it. Everything was really fresh and delicious, service was good, would recommend.
N. H.
Dishes with fish were 5 star, others mostly too sweet for our liking and very ordinary. We ordered their 5 shared plates plus one extra. First two dishes too forever to arrive then a long 20 mins wait with nothing and we then suddenly received three dishes together toward the end of our 1.6 hour booking. Not great experience. The waitress inside was very helpful and friendly but the guy who checked us in was too intense without any reason, the type that escalates a non-existence situation. We felt pretty under pressure when he was checking our vaccine records. It's good to know they take it seriously but also you could do same thing and create nice experience.
I. c.
is asian fusion your choice? if yes, you must give this a try! had a chill friday night with my friend, we ordered their $40pp dinner with 5 selected dishes from the whole menu, maximising the experience! we had the calamari, pinoy tuna, lobster roll, bbq ribs, chicken and papaya salad ☺ definitely satisfied but could not let the dessert go, the cassava cake with shredded coconut and ice-cream *chef kiss* staffs are lovely and give good recommendations. truly wish whoever reading this will have a fantastic time here as well! 🤗
A. I.
Went for lunch and food was great. Service could have been slightly better and I understand that being the first customers in as soon as they opened could be a bit hard to get the day started but I don't think this would be a valid excuse.
Overall good experience.
w. y.
Better make a reservation before visiting here. The restaurant always have people queuing outside even weekdays evening. You can order any 5 dishes from the menu for two people cost $69 during dinner time. My friend and I have ordered 5 dishes course and I thought that would be cheaper. I finally found that the price is no difference, if you not too hungry, just order it the dishes you want and no need to take 5 dishes. The food here was amazing. Must try pork belly and calamari.
M.
Such a great date night spot! We really enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. The beef ribs, corn salad and “dad I dropped my ice cream” we’re absolutely droolworthy. Service was friendly, drinks were flowing and there was a fab buzz. Will be back for sure.
R. M.
First time here right from the start we had awesome experience, Josh was great hosting us, he got us a great table. Yunn was very polite and delight. She went though the menu to help us to make our choice. The food was delicous, so its 10 stars anything less would be injustice. Great place Great people and Great food.
D. L.
My friend and I came for a midweek lunch. My friend is vegan and she mentioned that this restaurant catered well for vegans. She wasn’t wrong. I have visited this restaurant a few times before as a meat eater and have never been disappointed and I wasn’t disappointed this time round either. There was a full page dedicated to vegan options. Lots of faux meat as well vegetable dishes. We went for the 5 dish sharing option which is pretty good value at $32 for lunch and $37 for dinner. We chose the betel leaf, banana blossom salad, steamed buns, Asian greens & the special that day, mushroom curry. They were all so delicious, fresh ingredients and the faux meat especially the duck could almost pass for the real thing. The standouts would have to be the banana blossom salad, the dressing was to die for, so zingy and the Asian greens was so fresh and again the sauce, so flavor some! I washed it down with the Rice Paper Spritzer, light and refreshing, perfect with these dishes. The staff was very friendly and loved to chat. Be prepared to wait in the evenings though as is does get pretty busy and the restaurant isn’t too big but well worth the wait.
J.
Great food and nice vibe. Cocktails are a little overpriced like $23 but was tasty. Food was amazing. Plenty of flabours..Ceviche was so nice..
D. I.
One of the best food experiences that I have in Melbourne. All the food was amazing and the staffs very friendly. Highlights for the Kingfish and the Smoked Pineapple Ceviche.
C. B.
Sensational food and well thought out dishes!! Hours later our taste buds are still tingling. We had the Chef Selection for $49 and it was well worth it. The food just kept coming and each one was awesome. Service was friendly, quick and professional. Well done guys keep up the good work!!
X. T. T.
This is a lovely, busy and tasty place. We went for the first time today and the food was absolutely great. Delicious dishes, great prices, the cocktails are really nice and so are the desserts. I’ll definitely be back.
M. R.
This small restaurant in the heart of Melbourne’s theatre district is one not to be missed.
I highly recommend making a reservation to avoid long waits for a table.
Service staff are all friendly and attentive.
This is a great place to go to share food with your fellow diners for Very reasonable prices.
Don’t go past the lobster dumplings. So delicious.
C. C.
There’s a good reason why there is always a wait at this restaurant. This is a Melbourne staple of Asian fusion cuisine and is set in a cute, charming part of the city. I’ve dined here a few times and I enjoy both the normal and the pre theatre express menus, but it does get very busy, so book or be prepared to wait. The 5 courses is really good value and the cocktails are amazing. I love eating at this venue and it’s sister restaurant in Hardware Lane.
S. A.
The place is nice & worth visiting. The staff is friendly & they offer a superior service. The cocktails are super good especially the pandan colada (see photo). We tried 5 dishes and some of it were nice and some weren't impressive. Pork belly in sticky sauce were so delicious while the eggplant salad was average. Quantities are a bit small so be mindful of that while ordering.
H. T.
Had dinner at this small but lovely Asian Fusion restaurant. The food is Thai influenced food. It’s a tapas like concept. For a fixed price select 5 different dishes to share between 2 people. Servings are generous and all dishes we tried were excellent. They also have special Thai influenced cocktails. However they don’t take reservations so get there early or be prepared to wait. Worth it though. #maneklady #manekeats #manektravels
P. S.
Amazing place for a great meal. Can get a little busy - but the staff are helpful friendly and welcoming!!
The five dish lunch special is the way to go - don’t worry too much about which dishes to choose they are all good!!
Drinks here are also very good let the waiter get creative with a cocktail or recommend a wine and you will not be disappointed
M. T. L.
Although nothing which astounds me, Rice paper does consistently decent food. The portions appear small but after sharing 5 course between two people, you won't be left hungry nor full...just about right but for $35-40pp depending if you ordered extra rice or not and this does not include drinks.
To me, it is a little pricy. The food only comes out one dish at a time to pace you and prevent you from devouring everything in one shot....or perhaps it's too busy to try and make 5 different dishes and serve it all at once. I've been a couple of times and it's not for everyone but the fact that I've come back means there's is merit to decent food and service done consistently.
My friend enjoyed all the food and plans to come back ASAP to try other dishes
Of the five dishes we ordered, the lamb ribs were the best followed by the BBQ chicken skewers (special), duck banana blossom salad and the wagyu and lobster dumplings were least favorite for various reasons. I found the wagyu meat a bit chewy even though it wasn't over cooked and the lobster dumpling not what I expected for a seafood dumpling, just wasn't my thing.
I. G.
Went there with my partner for a dinner. Even if we arrived a bit early before opening time it was a queue already in the front. Decided to go with 5 course dinner and dished suggested by staff. Serving portions were really small, but food was delicious and looked beautiful. The best one was lamb ribs for sure. At the end we decided to order additional dish as it wasn't enough for two hungry people. But do that at the end and not before as 5 courses could be enough for you. They have no problems with additional dishes and plates delivered quite quickly so you do not need to wait for a long. Make sure you've got at least one hour for dining. It's quite a small place so if you arrive late you could wait for up to one hour before get seated - tried that the day before but decided not to wait. No reservations. Dished are not specific to any region but rather from all over South-East Asia.
B. P.
Tasty fusion food within a cool part of Melbourne.
At $37 pp for a 5 dish selection (between 2 people), it's definitely not cheap for relatively small portion sizes, but the quality of food and service delivers. To accompany your food is a great selection of cocktails, of which are surprisingly priced competitively ($14 - $18).
The major downside to Rice Paper Scissors is the minimal size of the restaurant; you'll have to wait a while for a table, and you may get positioned outside, which is away from the fun ambiance inside.
Overall, decent food if you've got a small group of people.
K. B.
Absolutely loved this place. The food was amazing but the service was what made it special. Our waitress was so friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and easily suggested all the items that could be made vegan. I would definitely eat here again.
J. C.
Funky, fun, loud, causal and absolutely delicious. My wife and I tried various dishes and everyone of them was delicious. The highlight for me was the melt in your mouth BBQ baby lamb ribs. This place is a must and looking forward to visiting again.
E. C.
Love the 5 for $69!! My favorites were the lobster dumplings, betel leaf, and the special sashimi. Cocktails were great and the staff was very attentive and friendly. Can't wait to go back to try some new options! Everything I selected in my 5 had a nice heat to it. Totally recommend for a fun date night.
D. N.
Really enjoyed my time at rice paper scissors. The banquet is a good option, especially if you go with a group, and if you’re like me, indecisive and want to try everything, there is something for everyone, including vegans. Parking is your standard for the CBD, paid parking around, including a secure parking right opposite the restaurant.
K. C.
We absolutely loved it here! It was recommended by a friend of ours and was bang on. We were only in Melbourne for a short trip but had to go a few times just so we could work our way through the whole menu. My only advice is, with walk ins only, it pays to get there early... it's well worth it!
S. K.
The best pork belly we ever had! This little restaurant is a blast. The staff is polite, the drinks are yummy and the food is mouth watering and amazingly delicious! It's worth a visit, or two, or three...go there with some friends and share the plates!
K. A. A. -. W.
This restaurant is amazing. I love the way they offer the menu. 5 dishes per 2 people, which means you can have a variety of amazing Asian fusion. I had one of the best chicken salads ever, the combination of savory and sweet was amazing.
The place is so popular that you need to arrive early to get table. I really highly recommend this funky bar/restaurant. Well done guys!
S. (.
Excellent place for dinner. So many goodies on offer. We picked a variety of small dishes and everything was delicious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We had to wait around 45 minutes for a spot which was ok as we went for a walk and waited to receive a text message telling us our table is ready. Highly recommended.
J. '. D.
Awesome little restaurant. Great prices to get 5 dishes for $69. It says for two people but is also enough to split between three. Ice tea is nice with a bit of Asian fusion to it. Fantastic options for vegans/vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. The staff are super cool. Shout out to the server from Montreal (just remember exactly which direction it is from RPS 😉). May have a bit of a wait to get a table but like most places with this scenario is well worth the wait.
J. 1.
Amazing place! We came here with my brother as it's his favourite restaurant in Melbourne. It was very, very busy on a Sunday night with lots of people coming and going. Everything we ate and drunk was amazing and I even managed to force dessert down too. Highly, highly recommend this place.
G. L.
Fantastic! It was happy tummies all around. Tried the feed me menu - the stand out was the Lamb ribs, prawn banh mi & pork belly bun. Scrumptious and delish. Also a decent selection of drinks and the service was excellent. Make sure you arrive early or make a reservation!
r.
This place brought us some fabulous experience. All the food was on point, well balanced and plated. The atmosphere was complementing the taste. Staffs were excellent, all very kind and passionate to bring us the best experience. Worth the money and time, will definitely revisit when we come back to melbourne.
S. H.
awesome experience! reasonable price with good food. we pick 5 dishes with $65. The lamb is fantastic. i am a person who don't eat lamb But tonight i ate all of them!!!! The pork is also good. the waitress said it is her most favorite. for me, the lamb ranks first lol.
i won't recommend the thai chicken which is average. the Asian vegetable( forgot the name But i remember it is on the top of the menu) is also average
in short, it is worthy to wait.
T. C.
We had the 5 dishes for 29.50pp for lunch and the food was amazing. 5 dishes was the perfect amount for my partner and I to be filled with food. Our favourite dish would be the sticky pork belly followed closely by the BBQ lamb ribs. The juicyness from the pork belly made me want more after every bite. It also went really well with the salads and greens on top. The lamb ribs were very soft and we were a to pull it right off tbe bone very easily. The BBQ flavour was very nice. I would highly recommend getting the two above dishes. Very nice and cosy place with friendly staff.

Nice south east Asian fusions. Super friendly staff. It was a very pleasant weekend lunch.
J. G.
A Melbourne institution serving up amazing SEA fusion and amazing cocktails. Possibly the best lamb ribs ever. You will think you have died and went to lamb heaven after slurping the Mekong whiskey sauce off these glorious creations. Beyond the food the staff are lovely and I have always had an amazing time here on my numerous visits over the years.
D. N.
Food was okay, feel like they were very heavy handed in the fish sauce. Very salty
R. S.
Haven't been here for a little while and the menu have remained pretty much the same. It was a great concept when it started, however, tgere are a lot more places now like it or serves the same dishes as it does. Finding it a little just overpriced now.
D. U.
I love this place. Have been twice in a week. The food is excellent, staff friendly, drink selection good. Plus it has a great buzz in hardware lane. Recommended.
N. S.
Great food! Must try places in Melbourne for sure! Great prices and even better flavours. Good service. We had the 5 share plates for $59 and a dessert. Savoury food was delicious, my favorite and must order dish for me was the Galloping Horses, an absolute bite sized flavor bomb! The Vegan dish of tempura eggplant with papaya salad was good too. Although the dessert was decent but didn't deliver on Lemongrass flavour for being a Lemongrass and Ginger pudding with condensed milk ice cream, burnt palm sugar caramel and crumble. That being said the dish was technically well executed but was crying out for something to cut the sweetness. All in all a great meal.
G. B.
Just a great find for service and what a dinning experience. The service was attentive without being over the top. The food was amazing and I do mean amazing.
F. L.
Beautiful cocktails and delicious foods.
Dishes are relatively small but in another word it is good and easy for sharing. The waiters were willing to tell the details about the food and would recommend based on guests’ preference.
D. C.
Exquisite South East Asian inspired cuisine served tapas style. Great food is hard to find, but when it is delivered along with great service, then you have found an exceptional restaurant. Do yourself a favour and give this place a go. You won't be disappointed.
Y. L.
Great food with reasonable price! Definitely want to come back again! The waitresses are cool and friendly!
C. S.
Service 5 stars! Taste would be a 4 stars for me. Each to their own.
H.
Really good concept of serving thai cuisine. Would totally recommend the lamb ribs and baramundi but quite confused with the calamary as it was too soft and I can't get the texture of the calamary at all. Not sure if that's how u want it to be but overall still pretty good.
S. H.
This is in a cute little alleyway. We got there around 6.30 and was told the wait was about 45mins. We ended up getting a table 30mins later. The food was delicious! I definitely recommend the thai fried chicken. Also loved the thai sangria! Must try!

Rice Paper Scissors is a great place to discover Asian fusion food. Melbourne's laneway cafe's and bars are world renowned and this one is right up there with the best. Atmosphere, great food and excellent range of drinks. We love shared food dining and RPS offers My favourite was the sticky pork belly and the soft shell crab. And the staff were terrific.
A. A.
delicious food that you can try 5 different dishes of, and loved the incredibly friendly staff!! felt very welcomed
F. G.
Beautiful Asian fine eating place with set menu that is value for money. All the flavours were delicate and delicious. Had a selection of Asian desserts that is modern, fancy, and awesome as well. Might need to wait a bit though as there will always be a bee line.
M. F.
I can't believe that they got rid of the lamb ribs, that was my favourite, l would have given it 5 stars if the ribs were still on the menu
I wonder why they got rid of it
J. L.
This place turned to out to be pretty average. We had the 5 dish lunch menu and we chose the below dishes:
Calamari - the calamari was nice and fresh but i did not really like the gravy like sauce it was cooked in.
Crab roll - this was one of their specials and i thought it was kind of dry and felt like it was missing something.
Sticky lamb ribs - these ribs were delicious, fall off the bone fatty lamb. The sauce was also very satisfying.
Pork belly - this was slightly below average. Good flavours but not as crispy and not done as well as red spice road.
Thai fried chicken - this was delicious, well fried but still very moist on the inside. The batter on the chicken was well seasoned with unique thai style spices.
We also ordered some coconut rice and roti to accompany the above dishes. I felt that the rice could have had a stronger coconut fragance. The roti was perfect and fluffy. Overall there was more then we needed and in terms of quantity you definitely get well fed.

This place is the best value for money you can get in Melbourne. Delicious food, fairly priced, good service. It's probably my favorite place in the world. I used to live in Melbourne and came here once a month. I just a weekend in Melbourne and needed to go back to Rice Paper Scissors. It's still as good as it was one year ago. Amazing place. If you are in Melbourne - do yourself a favor and eat here.

Fantastic little gem in this hidden side street.
I thought Chin Chin was great until we found this place. Gluten free, simple but delicious menu. 5 dishes for $59 for lunch which is plenty for 2 people. Such a bargain.
Fresh, zesty, crunchy, sweet sour, all the textures and flavours balanced perfectly. The fried chicken is the best I have ever had, the betas leaves with spanner crab or something special. And please don’t leave without trying the cucumber, mint and ginger mocktail... wow!
My new local in Melbs for sure. Excellent friendly service too.
K. R.
We were a large group so ordered every dish and were not disappointed. Food great, service and speed too.
H. L.
Originally thought that the place was just a rip off of Rice Paper Scissors, one of my favourite restaurants. However, the team here delivered well above my expectations, both food and service wise. All staff were attentive and really helpful. The food, absolutely devine. Would come back again and definitely recommend
m. j.
Fabulous food. Superb service and the best cocktails I've ever had. Do yourself a favour and check this place out. We had the chef's selection for $50 per head and it was amazing.
S. T.
Really loved their food, and good customer service. There were three of us, and one of us was a vagetarian, so we ordered five dishes for 65 AUD set plus 3 vegan dishes. Wr left with stuffed tummy. Due to very limited dining space and hight demand, each table was required to finish dishes in 1 hr and 50 minutes, and you will only be seated when you and your friends are at present.
M. S.
Food is quite tasty asian fusion. Service is prompt and server gave great recommendations not only in terms of dishes to try buy on portion sizes as well. Not too crowded for a sunny Saturday lunch.
A. M.
Absolutely delicious food, I always love when I can try multiple things from the menu so choosing five small plates was great. And each plate was better than the last. Can highly recommend everything we tried but the BBQ lamb ribs are next level delicious - a must try! Service is always great, too, but you might need to wait a bit for a table so be prepared and head to the bar next door to wait :)
I. U.
Beautiful Asian food, big variety of food. I loved the atmosphere and service. Very friendly staff
A. K.
We came here on a Friday night for dinner. While the food was really good, we found everything on the sweet tamarind side rather than a blend of sweet and spicy. Presentation of the dishes are great not to mention the 5 plates for $65. The only downside is the one staff member, who welcomes you at the door and takes your name down. He is super rude even after you come back after one hour as you were told to come back. He challenged us saying it's only been 40mins when in fact we got back correctly at 1 hour. When I challenged him back, he said to then wait 5 minutes. We thought this part was rude and unprofessional.
The venue itself is quite small and quirky.
The dishes of photos here are the: lamb ribs, Thai fried chicken, crying tiger, betel leaf dish, pork belly and banh mi.
C. P.
Small cosy place serving up punchy foods. Tiny seating room can be challenging for those broad of girth as you'll definitely be rubbing elbow with your neighbours.
Service is prompt and friendly.
H. V.
Absolutely loved this place. I prefer it better than Rice Paper Scissor in terms of food. Great services, friendly & attentive. Everything we ordered was amazing. My favourites are Black sesame wafer with swimmer crab & kangaroo tartar. So so good. Highly recommended.
A. L.
Not as many pictures as previous reviews. Too busy stuffing my face with tapas style Asian fusion.
If you're looking to dine at Rice Paper Scissors without a booking you're crap out of luck. Having learned from the previous visit to Melbourne, arrangements were made ahead of time.
The small rustic eatery can house a handful of patrons at the bar but if you unfortunately have a table of eight like we did, it's going to be a tight squeeze.
But no matter, the squeeze is worth the effort. RPS's drink options are surprisingly good. Guaranteed satisfaction with whichever freshly made drink you choose. Don't hold me to that.
Dining with us were two vegetarians. It was no problem catering to their selfish needs. With the tapas style menu and the assistance of friendly staff, many of the mains can be made vegetarian with little sacrifice to quality and taste.
We did the feed me menu and everything was amazing. One dishonourable mention on the soy bao's. It could have used a little more sauce to hide texture and add a little more flavour.
Overall, Rice Paper Scissors does Asian fusion well in a lively and intimate space. Do go if you're around. Just book ahead of time.
J. C.
I ordered the 5 dinner dish to share amongst 3 people. We got the special smoked bonito, Thai chicken, pork buns, duck salad, and crying tiger (beef). Everything was so delicious and they were just the right amount of food for each of us. The staff is very friendly and are willing to help you decide what you want to eat an even have great suggestions. They really cater to you. We also tried the Vietnamese iced coffee. I have had better but the presentation was beautiful! Also, the food comes out fresh out of the kitchen whenever they're ready.
N. H.
We have ordered sticky pork belly, beef, thai chicken, soft shell crab salad & barramundi. The best ones are definitely the beef & chicken, 5 stars. However, the others drag it down. Not enough favour in fish and the crab is not clunchy at all... Too tough skin for the pork belly, some of them are too hard to chew.
A. M.
Amazing food, always fresh and great variety. Cocktails were fast and delicious. Staff incredibly friendly and attentive.
C. D.
Great place! Amazing food! Must try food in Melbourne! The cassava cake is legit!
D. R.
Awesome food and great service. The banquet was more than enough food and variety for our group. Definitely worth a visit.
N. C.
Lunch on a Thursday for 2. Did the 5 dishes menu, every single dish was a standout, and the cocktails were awesome to boot. Highly recommended for a quick and delicious lunch
C.
It’s been better, this place used to have great food. It’s still ok, just not how it use to be.
D. P.
Good lunch deal. Great flavours with the right amount of spice. Service was good though we did have to chase up our last dish after a lengthy wait.
E. W.
Omg always such amazing food here, super fresh and tasty and just wonderful staff and service. Yeah it's super busy and you may need to wait 30 to 60 minutes but just know that and be prepared or get there extra early and then go grab a drink at the many great bars nearby. Every dish I've ever had has been consistently perfect so I have no real favourites
A. T.
Solid. I’d suggest giving it a go if you are around the area. Melbourne is full of great restaurants which makes it hard to place this one. If you aren’t close by, you may find better options closer to you.
Overall, it’s actually really good. No complaints.
E. D.
Absolutely delicious food, loved it especially the beef short-rib sticky sauce and the kingfish sashimi... sublime 😊not to mention the bbq duct pancake...delish
J. S.
Really love these beautiful Thai-fusioned dishes. This is my most favourite restaurant in Melbourne! If I have a chance to go back to Melbourne, I won't miss it!!
R. D.
Lordy this food is absolutely divine. Beautiful true flavours and stunning presentation. Absolutely the kindest, friendliest and most professional service. Just amazing. As a single person, they treated me like a goddess.
C. H.
Enjoyed the food ordered... an unique twist. Love the lotus chips, soft shell crab and the balinese potato salad......
M. N.
It's not overhyped. The food here is great if you're a fan of the south East Asian flavours (sweet, sour, ginger, spicy, coriander). Space is a bit cramped and wait times can be long (but mitigated by a waitlist where you can just go wait). The star of the show is the Wagyu steak and the Vietnamese ice coffee mouse.
D. W.
The ambience of the restaurant is cozy! The service staff was very friendly and knowleadgeable. Worth definitely the visit, the que is long, so if you want to try must come early😊
W. N.
Recommend to get there slightly early if you wld like a table straight away. We arrived at 5:45pm and with only a few tables left. Service was great and attentive, we ordered the dinner concept of 5 shared plates for $65. All plates were amazing, full of flavour and fresh ingredients. Only critique wld be the plates don't come all at once, just in dribs and drabs but other than that - atmosphere and food is worth it.
N. A.
Can't go wrong with fish options. Other items on the menu are hit and miss specially red meat. It's great to see busines sis taking coved rules so seriously but perhaps they can't be nicer about it and don't be so tense.
A. P.
I just stumbled upon this tiny little place on my first trip to Melbourne. And, I am glad I did. I had the Thai Fried Chicken and Crispy Barramundi. Both the dishes were absolutely delicious. The fried Chicken came with Sriracha Mayo sauce. The Green Apple dressing added so much flavor to Crispy Barramundi.
The nahm jim dressing of Barramundi can be a little spicy for few people. The staff were very friendly and helped me with the menu. I would definitely come again.
A. C. (.
Waited in line at 5.30 on Thursday night to grab dinner here before the theatre. All the dishes (5 dishes) we chose were super yum and the portions were perfect. Great service! The guy at the front was a bit snappy but the waitresses were very friendly. They explained the menu concept to us and when my friends drink took too long to come out, she removed it from the bill. Overall great experience, would return!!
C. M.
Jimmy🙊... I know you'll read👀 this, Jimmy🙈... Mate, you know I had to do it to 'em 😎, Jimmy, cuz imma💳 need the recipe📑 of the 💫satay💫 dipping sauce 💦💦💦🥵 that came with the roti 🥖 last night 🤌.

Such a great little restaurant! There can be a wait, but it's definitely worth it, especially when you can wait in the bar next door. All the dishes are well thought out and have a great balance of flavours.
T. M.
Amazing dishes and friendly staff. I love coming here as you get a range of different foods and flavours that are unique. Highly recommend!
S. S.
Cant fault this place, the food was amazing and the service was exceptional. We will definitely be back. 😊
M. V.
I visited Rice Paper Scissors with 5 others recently, and had the vegan sharing menu. It was ~$40 pp for 5 shared dishes, rice & roti bread, which is pretty good considering the amount of food you get. The tempura bao buns and crispy coconut crepes were my favourite dishes.
M. F.
Enthusiastic and helpful are the strong suit of their waiters! The salmon and trout sashimi and dessert are their recommendations! It’s a taste fushion with really warm service~
K. G.
What a surprise. Asian fusion tapas bar producing some of the best food I have ever tasted. The lamb ribs was simply delectable. I experienced a swordfish dish that was like salsa served on a type of prawn cracker. Not something I would normally eat however it was so delicious I simply wanted more. Beautiful tasty cocktails and the chocolate coffee dessert with chocolate and peanut soil topped off the meal perfectly. Highly recommend this place
M. T.
The food was incredible AND good value with 5 dishes to share for $65. Staff super friendly. Ribs were the highlight
M. N.
Friendly service with lovely helpings of tasty dishes. It's a relaxing space and atmosphere.
M. A.
My first visit here. Food varied from great to not bad. Kingfish sashimi was great, while two veggie curries were not bad. Service was also good but not great. We were a party of three, and our waiter interpreted our order of 5 dishes to share as us wanting 3 x banquets (which has 5 dishes), so we ended up with a bit more food than we needed, and a 50% higher food bill. Overall it was a pretty expensive lunch and not really worth the money.
R. H.
This place gets 5 out of 5 for food, service, price and ambience. I loved the night, thanks! Will be back many times!
K. K.
My husband and I came here last Friday night and were in love!!! Every dish that was served was a 10/10, so much flavour with a twist - nothing short of perfection. The best cocktail I've ever had was from here too! The vibe is amazing and the staff were so friendly. We can't wait to come back!! Highly recommend this place. I even bought their cookbook, loved it that much.
J. T.
Wow superb modern Thai cuisine. Fantastic flavours. No watering down for Aussie tastes here!
G. L.
Dinner for 4 on a Monday night. All 4 of us chose the Chef's selection of 9 dishes for $55 pp. Started of with dried lotus leaves and then a selection of Asian fusion dishes. Doesn't include a desert which we were a bit disappointed with. Also the drinks prices are high here at $14 for a pint of beer and the cocktails near $20. Food was good overall but we weren't blown away. Portion sizes are about right. Service was attentive but not sure if it was just our night but quite a few accidents and drops of dishes. Overall our dinner for 2 came to $170 with drinks and I'd say its a little overpriced for the quality.
A. H.
This restaurant is outstanding!
I was recommended by a friend.
Asian infusion style of food, excellent I cannot praise it enough. There were three of us, we shared plates, mouth watering. We are definitely returning here.
Staff were exceptional happy, friendly and explained the menu perfectly.
It would be one of the best restaurants I've been too!
S. K.
Great little spot for some asian fusion dishes. We went here before going to the theatre, the service was good & food came quickly so there was no worry of missing the show.
Wonderful selection of dishes with great daily specials.
Steamed Pork Buns were a favorite of mine as well as the Lamb Ribs.
y. s.
I've been to the Fitzroy one a few years ago and liked it so I went with families and friends to the city one. Quite disappointed... We ordered six dishes and only the braised beef was good. Beetroot curry was so salty and didn't have much curry taste. Egg plant salad was very plain. Pork bum and fried chicken were average too. I was blaimed for choosing this place for lunch:-(
T. W.
Some dishes were hit and miss but overall a great south east Asian fusion eatery! Friendly staff and extremely knowledgable in recommending dishes. However, food took too long to be served. My lunch break ended up being 1.5 hours. I would gladly go back for the food but speed of service should be quicker.
C. S.
Crazy good food! Great, varied range of drinks, the tea-infused whiskey sour absolutely slaps!
Make sure you go on an empty stomach!

I went here for dinner on Thursday evening with a friend. As we arrived at 5:30pm the place was already buzzing and had a really nice vibe about it. My friend and I came here as we were looking for a restaurant which served meat dishes and also accommodated special dietary requirements, which in my case was vegan. There were seven dishes which could be made vegan. We took advantage of the dinner offer with a set price for five dishes, myself having two vegan dishes and my friend having two meat dishes. The last dish we chose (as the fifth) had four pieces, so two were made with meat and two were made vegan so we could split it. The dishes were small but very tasty, and having the experience of multiple dishes made for a fullfilling dinner.
M. W.
Luckily my office is just a few minutes away which means I get to enjoy this place fairly often. Firstly, I love the food, it’s just really really good, always. The staff are great, I feel comfortable and the cocktails are fantastic, they even have their own gin now. 😁😁🙌🏽
A.
It’s a great experience. The ambiance is very welcoming and charming. Amazing food and service. Staff are polite and make great recommendations.

They have really good drink and food. I recommend to go here if you want to have a good time with your special someone.

This place has great food and great service with a good selection of wines. The Raw Tuna with Black Caviar on Flatbread is to die for. You also need to try the Goat - everything else is super delicious.

One of my favorite restaurant in Melbourne, great food and good service.
R. A.
Took a group of 16 here for work and it was delicious! Thanks for having us!
N. K.
Amazing Asian style tapas restaurant in Chinatown and one of my favorite places to eat when I’m in Melbourne.
It’s a great place to grab a few cocktails and some food before going out to the bars or a night out.
A. A. J.
Love this asian restaurant. Tasty and affordable. Plus the local waitress is so amazing very accommodating.
M. M.
Fantastic Vietnamese inspired food. It's great for groups and sharing. Best to eat with your hands and your fingers might smell of fish sauce after, but it's worth it. There's always a crowd and you'd might need to wait and leave your number for your turn, but an overall fantastic experience.
W. M.
One of the best thai modern food style. Good taste not too spicy for both Thais and westerners.
E. M.
Discovered this hidden lane way gem with a kitchen that creates absolutely delicious food. Wonderful idea to serve tasting size serves so you get to try multiple creations.
M. Y.
Now becoming an institute of Melbourne, their new location provides a larger venue and their vegan menu provides more culinary inclusivity to these progressive times.
The 5 dish deal is alway's a winner, but always makes for strategic dish choices.
To complete the experience, the staff are most jovial, helpful and deserving of praise.
D. A.
Good food and nice Thai cocktail but I was disappointed with the banquet amounts. Not worth the price. Got told by email we didn't have to do it for 8 people. It was ok for the vegetarians to do one between them but then the rest of us got pushed in to doing it. I'd rather just order my own dish. Would have been cheaper too.
A. G.
Fantastic attentive service, genuine people, slightly smaller portions than expected, but the food was fantastic.. faultless! Great to come here, share a few things and try few bew things your friends. 4 courses is about $45 per person on average :)
D.
Friendly service and interesting flavours. Banquet at lunch was a winner
L.
Good food, great service, lots of gluten free options, make sure you book though if you don't want to wait ages to get in, it's certainly popular!
A. C.
Had a great team Christmas party, the food, atmosphere and service was all fantastic. Highly recommend.
A. A.
Service was great, staff were chatty and very welcoming!
Great meals at a great price, would definitely recommend!
A. D.
One of the best restaurants in Melbourne. Bookings are strongly advised. We didn't have one so we're encouraged to have a drink at the cocktail bar next door. When our table was ready the maitre'de came and got us. Beautiful food and amazing staff.
C. C.
Really good cocktails, great options for all diets, get there early, place filled up easy .
C. T.
Service was nice and friendly, food was alright but very forgettable. With the abundance of options around we won't be running back anytime in a hurry.
K. L.
Had my birthday dinner and it was wonderful, friendly waiters and excellent service. The cocktails are amazing, especially the signature Rice Paper cocktail. It wasn't cheap but I was very satisfied :)
Great ambience and aesthetic, too.
S. F.
Great food and service. If only the serving was bigger but still happy regardless.
v. c.
Asian fusion restaurant where u share your food, some of the dish was really good, but some were like those comon Malaysian dish with a very fancy description and name to it.
J. L.
I really enjoyed the food that I ordered. I would have given it 5 stars however I found the service a bit lacking.
I'm not sure if our waitress was having a bad day or something but she was not particularly pleasant throughout our meal. At one stage I asked if my dessert was coming, and she said "If you ordered it, it's coming". Not the most helpful.
Additionally, service was quite slow, drinks took a while to come and be refilled and food took quite a while to come out. They weren't that busy either.
Overall I would definitely go back, the food was amazing. I just feel the service could pick up a notch.
C. M.
Our waiter Sam was super helpful with his recommendations. There is a full vegan menu that we ordered from and our favourite dish was the yellow curry. The 5 dish banquet lunch and cocktail was a great treat and we enjoyed being able to try lots of different dishes.
D. S.
Very good. Really enjoyed the food and the Wine.
K. L. E.
We didn't have to wait long when we arrived even though it was starting to get busy. Our server was very attentive and helpful when it came to our orders. Since it was our first time dining, he gave us an overview of how things are done there because they have a 5 bundle meal that's cheaper. He suggested we try the one special that he enjoyed himself and it certainly didn't disappoint. He also suggested to mix hot and cold meals as to keep the food coming and help the kitchen manage their time to which we kind of forgot. The selections were really good that we wanted to try most of the hot food. We had 4 hot foods and one salad, and because of that we had to wait quite a while for some of our hot food to come. Despite that, we totally enjoyed everything and we'd love to be back! Food was exceptional! Service was outstanding!
A. J. R.
Had a fantastic experience here! I've come here a few times for birthdays and other occasions and always have a great time. The Bbq Lamb Ribs in particular are incredible! Would recommend grabbing a Vietnamese Ice Coffee too. Really friendly staff made the experience a memorable one! Love this place and will definitely be coming back!
J. T.
Fantastic food, lobster rolls were a winner, with wonderful service. Good atmosphere, good music, nice artwork with low lighting. Well priced I would strongly recommend and will be back again.
J. L.
By the same owners as Rice Paper Scissors, the cooking style here is more Filipino and Balinese based, with influences from Malaysia, Thailand and Japan. Warmly greeted on arrival, we were quickly shown to our table. The menus were explained to us in sufficient detail so that we can make good choices. We decided to try all the entrees and enjoy a tapas style lunch.
The black sesame wafer with blue swimmer crab plus crab roe and Moreton Bay bugs with coconut thermidor and shellfish oil were particularly memorable. We were wishing for more but there were too many tempting dishes to order doubles of the same thing. The BBQ duck, lobster roll and kingfish sashimi were equally scrumptious. Such an innovative combination of ingredients to create taste sensations that were well harmonised. Their sauces were especially impressive - each one was unique and worth savouring.
Absolutely friendly and helpful service the whole time complemented by speedy turnover in the kitchen. The decor is cleverly modern and pleasant without spending a fortune. This place showcases Melbourne's great gastronomy scene and is definitely worth revisiting.
M. B.
Dropped in for a quick lunch and had the Vietnamese salad with vermicelli noodles, cabbage, sausage and spring roll. Theirs is an interesting interpretation of the dish, and very tasty (although the amount of mint in the dish was excessive). Service was good, although I thought the American waiter was pushing beer and drinks on customers a little too hard for Wednesday business lunch hour.
K. Y.
Introduced by friend, am pleasantly surprised by the good taste! Asian fusion Tapas, small serve, a bit pricey, but worth it 😚
J. C.
This is a very small restaurant but the food are simply amazing. I recommend this place for anyone who enjoys tasting a variety of dishes and still walk out full.
I've tasted every single dish on the menu and I like every single one of them (they do come in very specific personal order though haha).
Be spontaneous and order from their menu, don't forget their desserts too.
H. M.
Have been going to Rice Paper Scissors for years and it is still one of my favourite places for a special occasion. The lamb ribs are the best thing my taste buds have ever experienced, and they never fail to disappoint.
The host was very enthusiastic and bubbly and we felt incredibly welcome and comfortable. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed. Cocktails are very creative and every dish exceeded our expectations. Really great value for money.
J. D.
Excellent customer service with great knowledge of the menu and even made an off menu Mocktail that was delish.
I the CBD yet tucked away in a quiet little laneway away from all the hustle and bustle the outdoor lightning drew me in and the heating set the perfect scene to relax and enjoy a meal in my wheel chair without feeling like a burden.
I look forward to returning to this delightful little eatery next time I'm in the city.
a. s.
Real nice lunch.. Did the 5 dish deal and they also gave us a dish of rice. The food was good and delivered to a high standard and was very tasty. A great place to cat h up and lunch out.
A. S.
Amazing food and service ! I booked online but when we arrived there our booking wasn’t showing up in their reservations, showed confirmation of the booking- the staff were helpful did not make a big fuss of it at all and accommodated the mishap! Our server Selina was so lovely and patient with us choosing our dishes due to our dietary requirements! Would definitely return such friendly staff so polite, such a pleasure :)
T. O.
Closing time should reflect last order, 40 mins before close and can't get food is a bit silly
A. K.
No one can beat food take and presentation of RPS . Waiting for lockdown to finish and again go for amazing Asian Fusion cuisine...
B. C.
Really lovely place, price quite on the high side but if you can afford it you should totally go for it!
Best dish of the night was the pork jowl with scallops, if I had a choice I'd order two of those over the steak honestly, it WAS THE BOMB,one of those blow you away things you know.
Kang Kong vegetables is very missable, the caviar with raw tuna was quite delicious actually, very lovely, they serve complimentary steamed buns with housemade butter too, the butter was delicious
A. C.
The food was incredible so tasty, flavoursome and fresh.

Our waiter Sam was super helpful with his recommendations. There is a full vegan menu that we ordered from and our favourite dish was the yellow curry. The 5 dish banquet lunch and cocktail was a great treat and we enjoyed being able to try lots of different dishes.

We went for the Express set menu (very reasonably priced at $30 AUD) every course was supremely tasty with an artful combination of spicy, aromatic and sweet notes. The lobster role was amazing and the apple coleslaw to finish was unexpectedly refreshing. Our waitress (a friendly Finn!) was attentive and charming. Well-deserved reputation. Only complaint is that the restaurant is quite small and quickly becomes crowded—worth booking ahead if you can!
W. T.
Great food, Vic variety with very tingling tastes, very busy place make sure you get there early
H. B.
nice sdevice, but seriously, the quality of food is just so so. Those are not typical Asia dishes. I have to say that chat Thai in Sydney is doing better in Thai food.
A. L.
Overall, good food, good service, good location and renovations, good sized serve and reasonable price.
Crispy Barramundi was very good. Crispy outside and inside not too dried. Little chewy but not too much. Fish was fresh. Salad was very new taste to me with spicy, sour and green apple slicies.
BBQ Lamb Ribs was really good too. Very fresh, tasty sauce, well cooked that it was still juciy and very soft. Bone could easily be took out.
Maybe one minor improvement is try not focusing on deep fried and roast. Add some stir fried dishes and give better mix. But it was a vwey nice experience anyway.
T. T.
If you are in Melbourne are, you have to treat yourself to this tasty, full of flavor joint. You will not be disappointed.

Good foods
Nice drinks
Amazing service
Only thing is small portion size

Delicious food, great menu and service.
Seen a few Filippino restaurants open and shut. Perhaps noone really knows what Filippino food is like. This restaurant gives you a good introduction to the cuisine if you've never tried it.
M. A. P.
This place is awesome ! The vibe is just great, the food is incredible and the service! I would definitely go again.
H. F.
The food is good, I just wish that the items of the menu that are "gluten free" but not coeliac friendly (may - AND DO contain traces of gluten) were marked more clearly. They are still marked as "GF" with no asterisk so make sure you identify yourself as coeliac to the staff.
B. S.
We have been to one of our favorites recently, red spice road, but there was something missing. We found it at rice paper scissors. If you're into Asian it might not be chin chin but bloody good value
C. T.
Delicate, spicy (not hot) tangy, tasty morsels of Asian inspired food meant for sharing
T. S.
The most incredible delicate and delicious tapas ever.
P. R.
Lovely little restaurant with lot of local vibes. The 35pp deal for 2 with the choice of 5 plates to share was awesome.Got to taste variety of dishes ...crunchy,crispy,sweet,salty,spicy,tangy...great experience.Drinks and desserts were also worth the price and excellent presentation and service.Crowded hence book ahead.
S. T.
Food was amazing and the cocktails were delicious! Great vibe

Sister (excuse the pun) to Rice Paper Scissor restaurants. Very similar theme and equally good food. Sister does take bookings which is a relief. Lunch menu is different to the dinner menu.
The staff are very nice and make you feel welcome.
Some nice drink choices, even if it isn’t an extensive wine list. The cocktails were tempting.
The food was nice, the fresh roti especially so, just wished I had some more juices to wipe up.
W. D.
Delightful customer focused service. I was alone but everyone made me welcome. Passionfruit preserved lemon was a hit in this delish fruit crush! Food was Asian, healthy and sensational.
M. S.
We really enjoyed our visit. Great staff and food.
P. L.
Great meal with fiends on Friday evening at Rice Paper Scissors - great food & excellent staff SERVUCES.
A. K.
No one can beat food take and presentation of RPS . Waiting for lockdown to finish and again go for amazing Asian Fusion cuisine...
V. V.
Overall food and service were good. I recommend the kingfish sashimi and the crying tiger beef. Mocktails were underwhelming and the rice cake in the crab salad was all we could taste. Would return to try other things on the menu
H. J.
Had friend's mini birthday dessert. Friendly staff👍 nice dishes.

We went to Rice Paper Scissors last night and it was absolutely incredible! From the food to the service, our waiter Tash was so lovely, engaging and helpful! Give her a raise hehe. We enjoyed the bao buns, pork belly, barramundi, calamari and Chicken and papaya salad (our fav dish!) They were all so delicious and full of flavour! Highly recommend attending!!!
M. C.
We went for the Express set menu (very reasonably priced at $30 AUD) every course was supremely tasty with an artful combination of spicy, aromatic and sweet notes. The lobster role was amazing and the apple coleslaw to finish was …

Love this place! Second visit and had a fabulous afternoon with friends. Amazing food, drinks and service. Enjoyed the shared lunch and everything was sensational. Special thanks to Cassidy and Andrew who looked after us so well.

Overall the vibe and the service is really good at this place, the vegan menu ( I can't rate their normal menu) is quite good but nothing too hardcore for a vegan to rave about. But the reason why I only rate this 3 stars is because I feel you're kinda forced to pick 5 items from the menu, me and my guest don't eat alot and just wanted a little bit of food but instead we felt that we over ordered and most food went to waste as the staff keep "suggesting" to go for 5 dishes. I know this is probably forced for staff to say this but I think the owners of the restaurant should give a bit of freedom to their customers to choose what they can eat. I was a bit disappointed that we were seated outside even though I had a booking. The tables outside are beyond uncomfortable, the table has a wooden plank in the middle to keep the table straight, that means your legs are always far apart and feels uncomfortable, on top of that you're leaning forward on the chair because there is no backing on the chair, it's basically a mini stool.
The cocktails are quite good here so I highly rate it. Overall I believe rice paper scissors is a bit overrated, especially in the vegan community, but I still suggest people to check it out and try it for yourself as some people may have a different opinion on it.
G. R.
Little bit of a wait for our booked table. Food great service ok, dropped the dessert menu off with last of our mains, then disappeared. Needless to say no desserts ordered.
D. R.
Booked in on a recommendation for an 8 course feast for Melbourne's New Years Street Feasts and can say without a shadow of a doubt that this was the best restaurant I've been to on my trip to Melbourne this time around. Every single course was sublime and flowed so well with the next. And for only $100 each, we more than got our moneys worth for these 8 courses plus drinks and walked away with full belly's and full souls! Also the cocktails were incredible and in themselves complimented the food - highly recommend the Thai Sangria for a fresh and uplifting drink to go with your meal!
The wait staff and service was 12/10. They appeared to be high dining trained but with an air of casualness and comfortability that made us feel at ease and important; not a single beat was missed. An absolute must for your next trip into Melbourne city!
N. N.
The portions were quite small given the price tag. The baos were average, but I must say their pork belly dish is probably one of the best I've tried. I would visit again, just for that dish.
L. F. B.
The Lamb Ribs were the highlight of the night! There’s a bit of a wait for a table but there’s lots to do around the sector.
S. J.
Awesome food and brilliant customer service! Came in only a night or two after COVID restrictions were lifted. Service was a little slow but the team were so apologetic, gave a free glass of wine for the table and a discount on our dinner! Lamb ribs were amidst followed closely by the chicken and pork belly. The eggplant bao wasn’t that great, was a little bland. Overall a fantastic restaurant and will be back given the chance
A. A.
Great little space for dinner and cocktails. The staff was really helpful and nice when ordering. They have specials in the board too besides the menu.
There is a unisex toilet outside the premises, but it’s next door on the first floor (no lift).
B. L.
Flavours are slightly overpowering. Ordered the squid which was blend the kingfish sashimi was too sour for my liking.
Waiter was sarcastic and hard to deal with. Insincere. Will not return for the price.
V. M.
Funky little restaurant with good food and great atmosphere. Mocktails are awesome.
R. G.
Incredible food, drinks, and service! Had an all around incredible evening!
C. A. M.
Wow, wow, WOW ! Where do I start ?!
My friend and I got the 5 dishes for 35 per person because we are both very indecisive. We had the crispy barramundi, the pork belly, fried chicken, lamb ribs and crab crepe, aswell as iced tea. The customer service was fantastic - such friendly staff who made us feel very welcome and explained the elements of each dish as it was bought out. The ambience of the restaurant was also lovely.
The food - I don't have enough words to explain the amazing depth of flavours. Each dish was cooked to perfection, perfectly seasoned and all complimented the other dishes we ordered. The ice tea was also light and refreshing - perfect to wash down our meal.
110% will be coming back to try the rest of the menu soon. Thankyou for having us Rice Paper Scissors, you guys have an incredible menu, incredible staff and incredible location. Couldn't ask for more :)
M. A.
Great dining experience. Value for money, can’t wait to be back soon
J. Y.
Great food, great price, great service. The three combined makes it the best dining experience in Melbourne. Go early though, as there's usually a wait.
J. L.
Really enjoyed the food here
T. M.
This little gem of a restaurant was ideally located behind the Princess Theatre. Both the food and the service were excellent, we will definitely be back next time we are in Melbourne
O. D.
It's not often that a casual walk past and "this'll do" leads to such a sumptuous and truly memorable luncheon.
It did yesterday and I can hardly contain my excitement.
I had been to RPS in Fitzroy, several years ago and had forgotten the uniqueness of that experience.
This venue in Melbournes Hardware Lane from the outset, was a really excellent start to our post Covid dining adventure in the City.
The super efficient and friendly staff, all of them, offered from the start, great service but our particular waitress was delightful and showed us through the menu with ease and friendly professionalism, a trait sometimes lacking in the restaurant scene.
We went for the 5 dishes for two option and from the first to the last we had eye popping presentation and smacking good food.
Fresh, tasty, modern and each dish was simply delicious.
I'm a big eater, no surprises here and the portion sizes initially seemed a bit meagre but at the end of the meal, we had to forgo desert, we were both very nicely, full to the back teeth and bubbling with enthusiasm for this great city eatery .
I love a great restaurant experience, great service should go hand in hand with great food but this wonderful Sunday lunch was truly scrumptious and I'm looking forward to sharing it again
A. D.
Visited last night for dinner and was impressed by the food and service. The staff were friendly and explained everything well.
The Crispy Barramundi was melt in the mouth and the green apple salad complimented the fish nicely. I just found the Malaysian Roti was hard to eat and not soft enough for my liking but the dipping sauce was so tasty.
My friend enjoyed the Phuket Calamari and the Coconut Jasmine rice also. In terms of the drinks, both cocktails were delicious. My Thai Sangria was absolutely divine. It was so refreshing and perfect on a hot day.
Highly recommend this as one of the best dinner spots in the CBD and will definitely be back to try out more dishes.
A. T.
Wow worth the wait. Stayed in Melbourne 4 days and went here twice! Lamb ribs so good. Was impressed with every plate. Good work RPS
S. S. L.
Super yummy food and very reasonably priced! Must book, always full.
J. H.
Great staff and really good food!
T. N. T.
So proud of my South East Asian heritage. Thank you for sharing our uniquely superb aromas and tasteful delights. A delicious treat on our first honeymoon date.
F. G.
Had an absolutely great time. Food was amazing. Cocktails were amazing. Staff were friendly and great service. Can't wait to come back again
D. K.
Suggested by foodie friends who live in Melbourne. Some of the best food I've ever had. Fantastic concept, and outstanding and creative dishes. Staff was super friendly too. We waited for our table at the bar next door that the waiter suggested. Fun place too. I hope I'll be able to go back some day.
C. S.
Absolutely delightful and delicious food 🍲 service is outstanding and would highly recommend
H. J.
Came here for our anniversary for the first time and the service and food were amazing! Very cautious of allergies too which gave a huge ease of mind. Would highly recommend!
F. E.
Great place to eat with friends, especially with the options to pick dishes and share for a set price. Cocktails are excellent and the Vietnamese Espresso Martini was a work of art.
L. P.
The food was just amazing and the staff was lovely too. Will go back!
L. C.
I was tossing between 3 and 4 stars. The staff is very friendly and service is fast. I just thought the serving size was way too small for the price. Paying $32 pp I’d expect to leave very full, which I didn’t. The food itself was very delicious. Would recommend the duck salad and lamb chops. It was very busy so you might want to reserve during peak times.
A. C.
The food was incredible so tasty, flavoursome and fresh.
A. C.
Beautiful selection of foods which just set your taste buds on fire! The cocktails are to die for and you do walk out satisfied. Well worth the visit.
S. &. S.
Freaking fantastic. Chose the 5 dishes for $39p/h. Sampled the chicken papaya salad, corn salad, crying tiger, barramundi and pork and prawn spicy wontons. Food was absolutely packed with flavour and perfectly cooked. My most fave meal in Melb. Staff were super attentive and food arrived promptly. HIGHLY recommend this spot.
N. M.
We had 2 vegan options, Barramundi fish salad and and Banana Blossom Salad, and 1 Vietnamese Crab Roll. Each dish was delicious, full of flavour and a little spicy. They advise you to order 5 dishes between two to share for a set price but to be honest, that seems like too much food and the cost saving made by doing this is minuscule. 3 dishes between two of us was adequate and we like to eat plenty. Friendly service. Get in early or you’ll have to wait.
S. R.
Firstly, the covid check in process is so easy. This is done on your phone. Secondly, our host for lunch was amazing, such a bright personality. The best part ... all the food. We got the vegan 5 dishes for $35 (not 100% on the cost) I couldn’t pick a favourite they are all fantastic. Think I’ve been here like twice in about the last 4 weeks.
A. G.
Food was good - Fresh, Full of flavours, quantity adjusted enough for all guests on the table.
Cocktails were great and nicely presented.
Great service by the peeps there.
Reason I didn’t give 5 stars was managing the people while we were waiting. Staff Attitude was bit rude and not considerate of 37 degrees at that time. Same staff was very good and friendly when we got the table. So something to work on guys!!!
N. N.
After getting a taste of the dishes here, I understood why the wait is always so long. The Asian greens was so delicious - a must try. We enjoyed the lamb ribs and duck salad as well. The pork belly was a little dry. But the taste was very authentic Vietnamese. For $37 per person (dinner, $32 for lunch), you can order five dishes to share. I was afraid that the portion would be small but we had enough food to be full (with a side of rice).
X. (.
Food was great. However, the pace of service was too slow for a lunch. Staff was also very friendly and recommended us dishes, but caused us to over order in the end.
E. K.
This sister restaurant from rice paper scissors served similar style of food. Competitively priced with a more relaxed vibe where people can sit and enjoy their food unlike the other shop. The scratchings and crabs on wafer are awesome. Too bad the other dishes are quite average. The wagyu beef is tougher then the bun which supposed to be 9+ marble. The kangkung was plain and the Babi guling is lacking that oomph like the one you get in Bali. Services are top class though, friendly and attentive! Will recommend it just because the service are great.
Food - 6
Service - 10
Vibe - 8
Price - $$
S. L.
The food was just great and the staff friendly!
K. M.
Wanted to love this place as I do their sister restaurant in Fitzroy, but found their banquet for 2 very disappointing - flavour, texture, quality. 80 bucks goes much further elsewhere in the city. (Of note, staff was really pleasant and food was ready on time.)
e. e.
The staff had good suggestions on how to order. The food was delicious. The sashimi is a standout.
J. M.
Simply the best meal I've ever had. We were told that we chose our selection well but I get the feeling that whatever you order it would have been excellent. The service was exemplary, the dishes came out of the kitchen in good time, the wine list was diverse, the decor and atmosphere were buzzing. Highly recommended
F. C.
There is a very good reason why there is a wait to get in and why the wait is worth it.
We had the five course share deal where we could pick the dishes. The hard part is, which five. Once over the hard part is the easy part, eating all of the delicious food.
One dish seemed bland on first bite but initial disappointment disappeared as the flavour bomb went off.
The next hard part was choosing the best dish, but we decided it was pointless as all had different aspects of tastiness.
The wine was reasonably priced and good quality. We sat near the chefs who were very helpful when we had questions.
The only question you have is; what are you waiting for? One caveat, however, if you don't like genuine flavoursome food, go elsewhere, because this place is for people who love to ask themselves, is my mouth still singing? Ours still were on the tram home.
S. R.
An exciting restaurant with unique S.E. Asian Fusion from Filipino to Thai inspired flavours. They have a great cocktail and wine list but the best thing was the service from the host on Sunday night he fitted me in without a booking and Tash she was great, warm and always smiled when she came to my table. A great experience overall!
C. H.
Hands down one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The 5 plate system works well, and is great for experiencing a variety of food.
C. E.
My friends and I came here after a long train of great reviews. We were not disappointed! Had some amazing food and there serving method of sharing was so unique and fun! Our reccomendations would be the Thai Fried Chicken and the Betel Leaf. The service was also great. Our server a tall, blonde boy was fantastic throughout the night and was very charming and informed on the menu. The feelings the venue gives off was one of a kind and we will definitely be back.
S. L.
Exceptional food, cocktails, and service.
E. D.
Mixed experience. Some dishes were really tasty. Others, like the dumplings, had no taste at all. Portions were small (e.g. two thin slices of eggplant in the eggplant salad), and we left hungry to have a second dinner elsewhere. Good service, although they forgot one of our dishes. Glad we didn't have to line up or it wouldn't have been worth it. Not a great place if you want to chat with your dinner date because it's super loud. Overall, pleased I've tried it but wouldn't go back. Poor value, and best suited to drinking groups and small appetites.
A. E.
Delicious food, lovely service staff, yum wine.
Originally stopped in requesting a table for 4. A bit of a long wait but worked out well considering one of our party wouldn’t arrive until then. Put my name down and received a text after a bit saying there was a table available.
Share food. Tried lots of things. So full. So yum. Thanks. Would visit again. My fav dish was the Asian greens with pork belly.
S. B. D.
Great food. Loved the dishes and priced ok. Good variety, especially for vegetarians. Drinks were also great with a lengthy list of cocktails and surprisingly good mocktails. The place though suffers from its popularity. Service feels rushed and while it appeared out waitress and manager were run off their feet and tried their best, the younger two waiters really stank. Were quite rude and very unhelpful.
J. W.
Great food, quick service and friendly staff
C. L.
Excellent dining experience! All the dishes tasted amazing. And the cocktails... Wow! Will definitely come back.
P. d. S.
Food isn't that great for the price. Quite average. There was a barramundi salad which was quite nice but that's about it.
K.
We love this place! The food is sensational, service always very good and friendly. Do yourself a favour and go!
S. M.
Super busy but super fun little place. Tapas-style Asian foods with a great range. Everything we ordered was beyond delicious - especially the pork belly & calamari. Staff were overwhelmingly friendly and helpful, service was quick, and there was a solid list of cocktails and drinks.
D. R.
Great find close to the theatres. Friendly staff and great food. Cold beer too. Very reasonable price also. Thanks very much 😁
R. C.
Amazing food, so much flavour and cooked to perfection, great portion sizes. Wonderful friendly staff and service! You're missing out if you haven't eaten here!
K. H.
Love this little place so much that we returned yet again. It has such a fun but relaxed feel to it. The food could not taste any fresher or tastier, every bite is just so yummy! Today we shared the 5 dish lunch meal. We chose crispy Barramundi, lobster dumplings, tiger beef, mixed greens and the king fish ceviche. The servings left us both perfectly satisfied, but not stuffed. Thank you again to the staff that always make the visit so special. Highly recommended!!
J. N.
Very nice place. Service was excellent. Food was good. Price is a bit on the up side. Better to get the 5 mains for $39pp. Awesome overall experience.
D. T.
This is just about my favourite restaurant in Melbourne. I've been there a few times now and love it every time. Such good value for money and the food is always innovative and delicious. This time we took advantage of their pre theatre sitting and it was all seamless. Will be back again!
J. R.
Food very good, very small serves
T. E.
Spent about $60 for two, choose 5 plates. All 5 dishes that we ordered were really great. Especially the lamb ribs! The meat was falling off the bone and well seasoned.
The staff was also very helpful at giving suggestions and recommendations. Apart from having to wait 10mins because they're a bit strict with their opening hours, it was a pretty good experience.
P. B.
Wonderful food, attentive staff and relaxed atmosphere. I felt well looked after and enjoyed every dish. Yum!! 😁
S. T.
So good! We came here for our five year anniversary, so I was hoping it would be a memorable meal. We had the thing where you choose 5 dishes to share for two people. Really thoughtful portioning, easy to share and filled us up. Tasted amazing, wonderful flavours and textures. Our dishes came out one after the other quickly, the system worked really well. All the staff had a relaxed and friendly vibe, and were very attentive. So happy we decided to come here.
N. S.
Had dinner at this wonderful restaurant last night on the advice of the good folks at the Ovolo Laneways hotel around the corner. The 45 minute wait was worth it ! Standout dishes for us were the very tasty Galloping Horses, perfectly spiced Crying Tiger, the sumptuous lobster dumplings.
J. H.
What a great restaurant! A little small, but the food and service was great. Alex our server was amazing and so helpful throughout the night! He recommended us the duck salad and the ribs which were our favorite dishes. Will tell all our friends!
j. b.
Another delicious meal by the RPS team! Always the best service, food and cocktails and I know I can bring new people here and reputation is held! Thanks so much for accommodating and the great service on a special night out! Everyone enjoyed!
D.
You know it's a good place when you use it to win over your picky eater friend.
G. D.
Had a group booking, everything was smooth, we were looked after and the food was delicious as well. Would have no hesitation to book again.
G. S.
This place is absolutely great. Fantastic atmosphere and kind staff. The dishes are tasty and delicate. I was simply amazed. Try the rump lamb, the rib and/or the Apple pie, you won't be disappointed. See you soon guys!!
J. I.
Sweet place, great food, great atmosphere. Prime example of Melbourne food culture. Place is small and cramp, there is some outdoor seating and seating at the bar. Expect a wait to be seated, but service staff are superb. Staff recommendation were on point. Bring lots of people and share dishes.
J. M.
Favourite plate: Roti & peanut sauce. I can live on it! 🤤
D. A.
Really great service and nice food.
Some of the servings were a bit small for the price, but generally not bad.
T. M.
My partner and I came here for lunch and loved everything about this place! The food was amazing, ambience was warm/funky and the service was incredible. The perfect afternoon outing. Can’t wait to go back!
M. P.
Only had appetizers and a drink here. The lotus chips, roti and mojito. All good, all worth getting. I really loved the lotus chips and drink.
A. N.
One of my favourite CBD restaurants! The food is fantastic and I highly recommend a cocktail or two!!
R. W.
Upmarket interesting and tasty Asian fusion
K. S.
Great range of options. Serving sizes a little small / higher price than similar restaurants but the food quality and flavour are excellent.
R. K.
The diverse menu offered many interesting things. We enjoyed everything we ordered, and look forward to returning to experience other dishes. The service was attentive and friendly despite the restaurant being busy with Christmas parties.
R. B.
Food was really good, but the service was the stand out. Guys and girls all had fantastic chat, very welcoming, and gave us plenty of bar recommendations for before and after the meal (they add you to a text list if there’s a bit of a queue). Zee was particularly lovely and enthusiastic. Would gladly dine again!
J.
Great food, great starters and great service... you can easily have it all on a weekday dinner, worth to try.
Go for the Barra! 👌🏻
A. T.
The waitress in the red jacket was so lovely - made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Food was great, dumplings and beef ribs are recommended. Service was a nice change to the initial not-so-friendly interaction with the doorman.
l.
Been here twice and my experiences had been great both times!! Good food, great friendly service - can't complain! 👍
Will be back again for sure!
J. P.
This is a must try if you love Vietnamese or Asian food. We had the lunch 5 dishes for $59 for 2 people. (Dinner $69). Tucked away off Exhibition Street and definitely worth a try! Loved all the dishes we had. Thai Fried Chicken, crunchy with a nice bit of heat! Loved the Betel Leaf with crispy pork belly and Crispy Baramundi too! You can’t go wrong! We will definitely go back next time we are in Melbourne!
L. S.
We had a great meal and equally great service. The manager was so helpful and really knew the menu. She recommended the pork mex special and it was delicious, as were the other 4 dishes. We will be going back before we leave Melbourne to go to Singapore. Thanks for a fantastic meal to remember our visit to the city.
S. B.
RPS has been on top of our “places to try” list since moving to Melbourne and it did not disappoint! The platter/per person option is great value for money and allowed us to try a variety of dishes. Service was outstanding, host was very friendly, all the food we ordered was BEYOND delicious and a great evening was had by all 😋 I think the messaging system to wait for a table is a great idea! Only small downside was that after asking our waiter, we found out that the chicken salad dish we had started eating had calamari in it which was not mentioned on the menu and one of our guests does not eat any seafood so missed out on the rest of that one which was unfortunate but overall a great dining experience!
A. &. S. S.
The food and atmosphere was great. The restaurant staff had great suggestions from the menu and the service was excellent. They also handled the covid restrictions very well. Will definitely be back.
J.
Good food, lots of fun and big atmosphere. Two things lacking for me, 1) there simply is not enough space. We were 4 sat next to two, then they left and another two came in to our table, the waiter loudly taking our order, their order, it's hard to speak, not a great date place in that sense, constantly being knocked by staff and patrons, hard to hear anything, service can be slow. Secondly, found the service a little snooty and up themselves.
Its good, 74 per head with drinks for plenty of dinner, but not as amazing as I've heard from some imho.
S. N.
Had dinner here on a Tuesday night before a show. Arrived at 530 and it was already absolutely packed. Get in early! Food was delicious. A stand out was definitely the crispy barramundi. I'm pregnant and was so impressed that they removed things I'm not supposed to have without me asking (I didn't even think about the bean shoots on the veggies but they did!). And all at a reasonable price! We will be coming back next time we are in Melbourne.
A. S.
We had dinner at this place after being lucky to find seats without waiting in line (5:30pm). This place is busy for quite some time and while it’s location is excellent if you spend a night in the city, some of the food options are excellent. We tried 5 shared dishes and our favourites are the prawn dumplings, papaya salad and the barramundi. All 3 are well above average dishes. Good experience and highly recommended.
E.
Good service, great company. Love the atmosphere!
B. P.
Having read about this little place, we had to dine there on my Melbourne birthday visit. They don’t do bookings however Justin and William made sure we were seated on our arrival at 6:45 pm. These guys and girls are focused and dedicated to provide exceptional service, fabulous food at affordable prices in a warm, inviting, vibrant environment. Well done Justin ( & Team), we will return- on my 73rd birthday next year.
⚓️😘
A. K.
Food was interesting and different, but service was poor and staff were rude. Very crowded and loud.
M. J.
Especially good: prawns, wagyu, pork. Be prepared to get messy. Great flavors. Crowded even on Sunday night.
S. L.
Delicious food, wonderful staff! Would return.
J.
Food was great and service was good from most of the staff. Sadly one of the staff who seems to be the maître d showed prejudice towards us when we said we were out for our last meal before we went into lockdown. The change in her expression and questioning us made us felt really unwanted. I understand it’s good to be cautious but there was no need to be rude about it.
e. b.
A little bit on the pricier side but in terms of food it was amazing (try the beetroot curry) and the staff were so genuinely friendly I cannot wait to go back !
c. a.
This place is an ideal marriage of Thai Street food and Melbourne laneway culture. Great food in a small, busy space with all the bustle, noise and smells of divinely fresh Asian food. Great service with character, and great table management on a busy Saturday night. N Melbourne excels at its own brand of Asian food, and this is one of the best in the mid-market space. Seafood and pork dishes especially.
D. L.
If you like to try some Asian fusion tapas style, it is good place to go. I went there based on recommendation and came away a tad disappointed. I tried to book early but no-one picked up the phone or call me back despite 3 phonecalls. I only discover I could only spend 1 1/2 hours there when I got there. Then after ordering one of my friends got terribly sick so two of them have to leave leaving three of us to finish 5 people's order. I thought I could take the leftover home but they do not have the licence to allow us to do so. Food although is reasonably good I think it is relatively overpriced. I do not like the high table seating. Quite uncomfortable. Also it is crowded. Not the best place to entertain and have a relaxed meal.
C.
Never disappoints. Delicious menu and no fuss sharing plates, choose 5 dishes and pay $35 per head. Really good to go with friends and not have to worry about who ordered what and how to split the bill. Very reasonably priced. I go at least once a month. Love it! Be prepared to wait for a table though but there is a cute bar next door so grab a spiked bubble tea while you wait. Head to the Fitzroy location for a much shorter/no wait on weeknights.
O. J.
Food is great, we had barramundi/pork belly/fried chicken/Asian greens/rice. A good pan-Asian place without too much fuss with the food.
Service is not so great, it’s inattentive and at times nonchalant. Would otherwise have been a solid 4 star place.
s.
Great little Asian fusion restaurant / bar vibe. We chose the option where we could select five dishes from the menu for $34.50 per person (2 people, dinner). It's well worth the money because you get A LOT of food. The lamb ribs were the stand out dish for us - cooked to perfection! The sticky sauce is great because it coats your fingers and leaves you wanting more. The meat is easy to pull off the bone! Absolutely loved it. There's a wonderful assortment of drinks as well. Do yourself a favour, and eat here when in Melbourne!
S. P.
Great variety of starters and good choice of mains. Most dishes draw inspiration from Vietnamese street-food. Excellent selection of vegetarian dishes. Food tastes authentic. Must try spicy apple salad. Prices are slightly on the higher side. Overall, great food and convinient location.
C. C.
I had one of the most delicious meals ever here! Excellent menu with creative and incredibly flavoursome dishes. Their "choose 5" menu is excellent value for money and more then enough food for 2. Every dish is well presented, served piping hot and so freshly prepared. The crispy barramundi is divine. Wine a bit pricy. You'll have to put your name down to get a table but you can go off and have a drink and they will text you when your table is ready! Totally worth the wait. A unique place setting high standards for Asian cuisine in Melbourne. Friendly service!
b. s.
Great Food but it used to be better unfortunately.
Location has changed to Hardware lane.
And i m certain i was overcharged which is upsetting since this place has been one of my favourites 🙄
Still recommended though
K. S.
So many yummy tapas. We had the $59 for 2 people five dishes: lamb short ribs, Thai fried chicken, pork belly, Crying Tiger, and Filipino BBQ Pork. All but the lamb dish were gluten-free, and they were ALL good! And even though we were quite satisfied. We went on to have dessert, the coconut lime keffir sorbet (gluten-free) and the Terrarium (espresso mousse with chocolate-peanut butter "dirt"). Absolutely scrumptious.
S. A.
Fantastic flavors, great for sharing. Tapas style dishes, $37 per person for 5 dishes at dinner! Really artfully prepared food, great presentation, very friendly host and waiters. Able to accommodate us even though we didn't have a reservation!
M. V.
Amazing amazing food and service was very lovely
p. m.
We had the 5 dish at $37pp with the:
tiger prawn
Ceviche king fish
Softshell crab
The Fremantle octopus
And the lamb cutlets.
The lamb cutlets was to fatty and we couldn't eat it so we go offerd a different dish instead.
The rest of the food was incredible and the service outstanding.
Would highly recommend.
Ps: amazing bloody Mary!!!

Never fails to impress. The food is outstanding and great cocktails.

Wasn’t blown away with the food but it was good. Wagyu beef was most disappointing but the lamb was probably our favourite. Staff were pretty good overall but couldn’t help but notice a few tiffs between some members of staff. May have been a long week. Forgetting that, food was good enough to convince me to come back and try more dishes.

Food was delicious and the service was impeccable. I had the Thai Lime Bitters on their drinks board and it was delicious omg. The music was good I think it was some french hip hop! The food was tasty and quick as will definitely be stopping by in the future!

Must try! They dont take bookings so get in early to avoid long waits. Groups of 4 can take longer to be seated where a couple can fit in pretty quick. Choice of 2 bars on the right while waiting.
The manager is spot on with wait times and it's definitely worth waiting. Love the ribs.. favourite dish! It's all so tasty, fresh and consistent dishes every time.

Well worth the wait!
Food and service was fantastic, I had been told about this place a while ago so naturally once I came to Melbourne it was the one of the first places on my list.
Surprisingly the prices are very affordable.
Would love to have this place in my home city :)

Amazing food, beautiful beers and wines, incredible attention to detail and first class service. Absolutely brilliant.

My husband and I wanted so much to try this place due to the good reviews. The food was good, but all the dishes tasted the same. Too much chilli seemed to destroy the essential flavour of the food. Definitely not our type of resto. Service was good though.

Always busy, but great food!

The food was really good. Portions were good. The service was very attentive. We had a great time.

Great south Asian flavours. Good balance of sweet and sour, nothing was overpowering in the dishes we had. Reasonable serving sizes for the price. It will be good to see a rotation of seasonal dishes but there are plenty of specials on offer (3 in addition to a menu of about 16).
B. P.
Definitely dont miss!! We were recommended by a colleague. We really enjoyed the thai tapas approach. Very original dishes and they have specials. The night we went we had a chicken thai dish. Barramundi, wagu, ribs, and beef cubes. Dont miss the roti!! Such a great peanut sauce. We also had a jasmine rice to have with the dishes. The pp rate is very fair and we WILL be back. Let Dauphne know you read this. All the staff are very friendly

Excellent atmosphere, service and food. Prices are good too. That's all you need for a great dining experience.
You can tell this is an establishment which focuses on quality across the board.
Highly recommend!

Very good service. Delicious food. We tried the meat and vegan menus and both were good.

I had an AMAZING dining experience at Rice Paper Scissors in Melbourne CBD with a couple of friends a few weeks ago - the whiskey lamb ribs and the crab bahn mi are an absolute MUST!! One of the best Asian fusion restaurants Melbourne has to offer.
I loved the dining experience so much that I ordered their cookbook.
Unfortunately there was an issue with Aus Post and the order was not delivered to me - however Hammond from Rice Paper Scissors was extremely lovely and helpful and proceeded to send me another copy immediately - I received it 2 days later!
It is so rare to experience such fantastic customer service like this - not only in the dining sector but also across other areas of the business.
I will definitely be visiting Rice Paper Scissors as soon as VIC restrictions ease - in the mean time I will try my luck at attempting to recreate their whiskey lamb ribs from my new cookbook. :)

Amazing food, amazing drinks, our server Gui was too amazing he made me feel bad in myself 😁
We came for a quick bite and a drink between shows and ended up joining in on a table with two other people and making some new friends.
10/10 would recommend anytime.... Although maybe book ahead to avoid disappointment

If I could rate this place more than 5-stars, I would. This would have to be the best place I have eaten in Melbourne. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The price is a bit on the higher side but definitely worth it.
D. B.
Delicious asian food with a great range of flavors and tastes. The service is polite and fast and the atmosphere is very chill.
I cam see it getting busy during business lunch hours, but we had a great time. I will definitely be going back.

Food was delicious as always! The wait staff are just delightful and incredibly attentive. One of my favourite places for sure!
M. F.
This is more than a restaurant. It's an experience. One of the best restaurants in Melbourne. They always surprise you with something delicious! The only downside is that as it's very popular and you can't book, you might find yourself waiting for more than an hour for a table, although they put you in a list and text you when a table is ready.

If it's one thing Melbourne restaurants do well, it's Asian-fusion. This place fits into that category with a little tapas-style twist. Food is well price, creative and most importantly, it's very tasty and flavorsome. Usually when my partner and I go to a tapas place we usually get our own small plates and share a vegetarian option as she's vegetarian and I'm not. We asked nicely and they were able to split a plate with one vegetarian option and one meat option for the same dish. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone, however my only gripe is that they don't allow bookings so allow 2ish hours before you intend to eat and go put your name down during peak periods.
G. L.
Really good Asian fusion food. There’s a wide selection and all of the dishes we tried were delicious. The portions are pretty filling as well. Highly recommend the lamb ribs and barramundi!
A. W.
As someone who eats Asian food alot, I have to say these guys delivered. While there was a modern touch to it, the flavours remained pretty authentic and the quality of ingredients high. I loved that they didn't hold back on the spices because that's what I think good Asian food should be- full of flavours that will excite your taste buds. Kudos to service as well, attentive enough on a busy afternoon service, and a special shout out to Daniel, who very kindly catered to our needs to move the pot of flowers outside and change the noodles to rice according to our preference. We really appreciate it! One star off only because we didn't really like the bar seats; there wasn't much table space for the middle person when the food's placed in the centre and the stools didn't have a backrest.
P.S. favourites are the super tender calamari, sticky lamb ribs and the refreshing barramundi salad.
P.P.S for a full Asian experience, order a bowl of coconut rice to go along with the sides!

Perfect location for dinner inbetween the harry potter show! When you show your tickets, they give a free dessert after. The items on the menu are asian fusion and pretty authentic. Great food - tasty and varied for all tastes. Good range of wines as well. Only issue is its hard to get in - but fortunately there's a wine bar just down the street to while away the wait. But the wait is definitely worth it.

Friendly service and awesome food. We had a number of vegan dishes including the tofu bao which was great. But our fave dish was the greens and mushrooms which were all smoky and salty and delicious. Great vibe
D. L.
You always have to wait for a table and the seats are not the most comfortable. But heaps of people come here and it's for a good reason. Yummy food. Have been here a few times and they never disappoint. Highly recommend the roast quail and lamb cutlets.
S. B.
Went here for a pre-theatre meal. It was great. $35pp for a group of 4. It's asian fusion so our dishes were from all over the continent each were very delicious. Great vibe inside and professional service.
E. S.
I found the food a little tasteless, the place is cool and cozy but there are better Asian places to try. I definitely wouldn’t go here by myself as the dishes on their menu are made for sharing and are too big for taking more than 1-2 for just person.
M.
We had the chef’s menu for $49. Really good value - the portions were enough, flavours are really nice with a modern take on Filipino food. Service can be improved though. I did not appreciate how the waiters kept rushing us to order and kept asking to clean the table even though the restaurant was not really busy. We ended up getting dessert in another place.

Best satay sauce I've had. Great food and friendly staff.

In truth I am often a bit jaded by the procession of new restaurants in this part of town. Quite simply however this place is a something not to be missed. Wine list limited but interesting. Staff attentive and very welcoming and helpful. Food - remarkable. I cut above many places in Hardware lane if you are interested in a glass of good wine and very good lunch (and a sherry).
A. J.
First time visit and I’m very pleased with the food we had. Very tasty with rich flavours and good portions. A busy buzzing friday night but staff worked efficiently and we’re taken cared well. Look forward to my next visit.

Great vibe, awesome food and amazing service. This is what going out for dinner should always be like

Great food, great staff and great vibe!
Our waitress Ellie went above and beyond

Delicious food! Everything we ate was absolutely top notch and the wine was briliant (albeit expensive!). Would definitely recommend.
P. L.
The food was amazing and the drinks were very nice. The service was very friendly and were helpful in explaining the menu. Think the only downside would be the wait time but that's out of their control. If you're down for waiting then I do recommend checking this place out.
C. L.
Delicious food, but the restaurant is far too small for how many people they seat in there, making for a noisy & cramped experience. Furthermore, you’re practically rushed out the door the second you finish your last bite. It’s also worth noting they don’t do split bills, even on a weeknight. Don’t think I’ll be back.
B. A.
The guy in the front for tables is a bit snappy and cold. He told us there would be a 45 minute wait for 2 people, but we waited less.
Service was attentive and friendly, even though the place is super busy.
All the food was amazing and the portions were amazing. We got the sashimi salad, BBQ ribs, duck salad, tiger beef, and prawn skewers. The best by far was the duck salad. After it, the ribs, sashimi salad, prawn skewers, and tiger beef in that order. The tiger beef was a bit too chewy for me.
L. S.
Fantastic flavours. Great service and delicious beer. We went for the banquet as there was a big group of us . The meals were explained and delivered with care. Happily accommodated vegetarians. Fab night.

Typical over-hyped and over-priced Melbourne Asian "fusion" cuisine. The food is nice, but it's not worth the prices, and definitely not worth waiting 60 minutes + for on busy nights. There doesn't seem to be any consistency with the pricing relative to the cost of ingredients or effort to make. Expect to sit outside on tiny stools, even when it's windy and 14 degrees. On the evening we visited, they were out of all the beers we wanted, so had to make to with Korean Hite beer.

Dined here last Saturday, outstanding food and very attentive service. Can't fault it! Will be back ASAP.the best restaurant

Very memorable meal, we'll be reminiscing about the fantastic food here for ages. Highly recommend the chefs choice!

Food is absolutely amazing. The potato salad is totally underrated on the menu but is one of their best dishes. Definitely a must try! Service was also spot on and friendly.
A. M.
First time to celebrate my wife's birthday and we were not disappointed. Food was fresh, flavoursome and delicious. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. We'll definitely be back.
N. B.
I love this place for a quick bite. Located down a little ally this place is well worth the detour. Probably best described as Asian liaison the flavours in every dish are just on point. The service is always quick. It may be challenging dining with a group due to limited space inside.
H. P.
Unique food, surpurb flavours, beautifully presented. Very good value for money too. The staff were all friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and genuine. They made our family birthday celebration a happy, memorable one.

My favourite restaurant!!! Could not recommend it more! I live on the Gold Coast and travel to Melbourne just to visit Rice Paper Scissors. Service is always great! And food is even better. Don’t mind the wait because I know it’s worth it! Always recommending it to my friends traveling down to Melbourne and there blown away too. Glad I stumbled upon this restaurant 2 years ago!
R. K.
Great food and reasonable prices! My biggest complaint is the lack of split bills!! There were five of us and we could only split it two ways! That doesn't help at all. Please let us split the bill. It's not difficult and it's what the customers want!! If it costs the business a few more cents to process additional transactions I am quite willing to pay for it!
C. S.
My husband & I dined at Rice Paper Scissors for lunch, when they were just about to close the kitchen. Instead of turning us away the staff welcomed us & provided us with great customer service. The food was amazing & the option to pick 5 dishes off the menu for $59 was perfect, as we were able to have a variety of dishes. All ingredients used were fresh & the flavours in all dishes tied in perfectly together. We will be dining here again!

Fantastic friendly staff, great atmosphere and amazing food. We loved the pork jowl and cassava cake 😍 their cocktails were also unique and the value for money is outstanding.
A. K.
If you want good, tasty asian food in a pleasant surrounding with excellent service, then this is the place to go. Really impressed. Thanks.

Service was friendly and efficient. Food was delicious! We had, and I can recommend, the chicken wings, short rib, papaya salad, school prawns and roti bread.
W. J.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES! That's a yes for every star this place deserves, and here's another for good measure: YES!
A bit odd that the only category for this restaurant is Thai, since it's hardly a typical Thai place. It's really a whole mix of SE Asian fusion, and while that concept may not seem too novel, this place still really stands out.
As others have suggested, you're best coming in with at least another person, and as a larger group, you'd have even more to share. The $59 - 5 dish lunch special (all in) for two people is fantastic value, and was even more apparent once I tasted the quality of the food. I think it's only another $5 for dinner.
I recall I had the baos, pork belly, fried chicken and crying tiger (wagyu beef, in a leaf wrap and dipped in a citrus sauce). I forget the 5th dish, but each was so good and it's almost impossible to pick a favourite. You think you've had your favourite, but then another comes out and also gives you that 'O' face after each bite. Each dish is brought out a few minutes apart, and gives you enough time to enjoy each one on it's own, without having to wait long before the next comes out.
Seating can be family style depending on the table you're at. We were next to another group, and saw a few items that I didn't order but all looked impressive in their own right. Great vibe in the place, and everyone (patrons and staff alike) seem in a positive mood.

Food was super tasty - so many delicious Vegetarian options my fave was the tofu bao and my friend had the barramundi. Generous serving of fish, she loved it. The staff were super friendly and helpful too.
B. H.
Friendly service, good value and great food! I have been here on 5 occasions and always satisfied. Peace guys!
S. B.
While the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the overall service was a little lacking. Food coming out of the kitchen could have been a lot more regular. Not bad, but for a place that gets as busy as this it should have been better. The food was however fantastic, really delicious.
S. K.
+ great food...
+ good vibe...
– over priced...
These folks know their stuff! They offer a wide range of food including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free.
Highly recommended: lamb ribs and fried chicken.
Heads-up: long waiting, need to go and book beforehand. Up to an hour waiting time on busy nights.
Heads-up 2: not good for the first or a cosy date.
