This is a nice little restaurant, great service , friendly staff and kids friendly. My kids enjoyed feeding the fish. The food is good and the venue is really clean. There is also a fish farm tour, we didn’t get time to do this but I am sure this will be a great experience for families with kids

Well worth a visit if you are in the area, make sure you book ahead as they get booked out very quickly. We ordered a selection of Thai Style Barramundi, Aussie Style Barramundi, mussels in Napolitano sauce, garlic prawns, kids pasta, kids chicken tenders and kids Barra bites - the stand outs were the Thai Style Barramundi and kids Barra bites; the fish was tender and full of flavour. The service was friendly and the restaurant has a very relaxed country farm vibe to it. Highly recommended!

Nice people, slow service, food was pretty good. We had oysters and the Thai style whole barramundi. Waited 15mins to be seated and then 30mins to order, staff seemed stretched but to be fair were very pleasant to us. No hard feelings…just not great.

Went here to join barramundi farm tour. The tour was quite pricey $10, considering there was not much too see and there were approx 30 people joined the tour. We also had lunch after the tour. The food was tasty although pricey (considering in tourist area it is still understandable). Dining area was very good as we were sitting outside near Koi pond.

Restaurant serving locally farmed barramundi (farmed on the property). The fish is as fresh as can be, well cooked and delicious. The sides were also very good. The service was ok, for a Monday lunch there was only one staff on the floor at 12, making it abit harder to get service.

Recommended if you are in the area. But make sure you book first the spot to come and eat here as it gets busy fast. Whole barra Thai style is really a hit. We enjoyed it along with other Barra meal. Great friendly staff and ask them about Koi feeding frenzy for the kids.

Had a good experience here today. From the tour to our lunch. Only thing I was disappointed by was the service from the waitress who was rostered on. She certainly could use some training on what good service is.

Amazing restaurant! We ordered several types of barramundi dishes and everything was perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. Service was pretty quick even though we came during busy Easter weekend. Booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. Dishes I love: barramundi cooked in yellow curry, barramundi fish and chips and Thai style deep fried whole barramundi (my favourite!)

My wife and I had heard about Cookabarra from family and friends who mentioned how good it was. That was an understatement. Absolutely fantastic, especially the Barramundi and dumplings. Will be going back again for sure to eat and do the tour of the facility.

You can't miss the two massive signs on your way out of Newcastle. These guys supply over 1,000kgs of farmed barramundi fish every week to restaurants in Newcastle. The whole Thai barramundi fish seems to be the most popular item on the menu. They grown their own fish and serve it with salad grown from their own hydrophonic garden. A bit pricey, so put aside $70 for a meal for two without drinks. I'd recommend sitting outside during lunch. They open at 11.30am so you can get there in plenty of time to get the whole Thai fish. They do a $10, 45 minute guided tour of the facilities (11am and 2pm) where you get to feed the fish and visit the garden. Family friendly, but indoors can get a bit noisy. Would recommend this place if you're in the mood for the freshest barramundi in Newcastle by far.

I loved this place, i am a Muslim person and when i asked them to use clean oil and pans to cook our fish worrying from any contamination with Pork or any other meat, they were very respectful and lovely in their service. this place is absolutely amazing!! just wished it opened to later in the evening because barramundi for dinner would hit the spot after a swim in the beach. Brilliant place for lunch! Barramundi harvested from the morning at their own farm served to your table. Fried fish and chips are awesome, so were the grilled! A lot of people ordered the whole fish too! Also the napolitana sauces are crazy delish! Great outdoor area for the kids to run free and if they’re nice, the restaurant may provide some fish food to feed the fishes in the surrounding pond. This place is amazing - they catch a Barra fresh out of the farm and cook it up when you order...so fresh! The signature dish is an amazing deep fried Thai style Barra, served with amazing stir fry vegetables and rice, it was fresh and juicy and not greasy in the slightest. We sat on the deck, overlooking the farm and the trees, enjoying the sound of running water from the pond which surrounded the deck

Fresh fish and beautiful salads. One of the go to destination way to nelson bay. My favourite full barramundi & salt & pepper. Kids love feeding the fishes. Service ladies are very helpful and alwayssmiling. They showed the big 6yr old barramundi in the back of the shop.

Pretty interesting place! We went to the 11am tour, and and tour guide was very informative and charismatic. The farming equipment was also pretty cool to see, as well as the thousands of barramundi they keep in all the tanks. We had lunch at the restuarant here and ordered the Thai and Aussie-style whole barramundi, both which tasted great and was enough for our family of four. The chips were also fantastic - very light and crisp, but fluffy on the inside.

Where do I begin!!! The food and hospitality at cookabarra was fantastic. It must be the best restaurant in Nelson Bay and Port Stephens. Take the tour also, feeding the huge barra is so fun.

We came for lunch on 20 Feb 2021. Coincidentally, we were also here same day at almost same time in 2020 with only 15 minutes difference. The staff were friendly although it was busy. The whole fish dishes were both excellent in presentation, taste and quantity. The salt and pepper squid served with salad was another high light certainly not to be missed. We did a tour to see and learn the process of how barramundi was grown and fed last year. It was very educational and interesting for both young and not so young. Thank you and congratulations.

I had my 18th birthday at this amazing place called the Cookabarra barramundi Farm on the last week of November. The staff and the function of the party went so well so thank you so much to all the staff working that day. i really recommend having a function here but it can be a bit of an expense but the food is spectacular and is worth it. i have been here previously absolutely love the food. Can't wait to go back again will see this place in the future.

Cookabarra Restaurant We heard about this place a while ago, and finally got around to getting there. Wow, this place is special. I can honestly say that this is hands down one of the best, if not the best lunch I've ever had. The presentation and flavour of this meal was 10/10, as was the service. Cookabarra Restaurant is a must if you're in the Port Stephens area. Make sure you make a booking though. This will ensure the staff are prepared so you'll get to experience the same service as described. After lunch @ 2pm, we even took a guided tour of the Barramundi farm, Which is totally worth doing.

This was the best barramundi I have ever had. Really fresh and delicious. Worth every penny. Prices were reasonable too. The owner and staff are really nice people. Our car got stuck in a pothole and they did everything they could to help us out. And kept helping us and finally got our car out. If it weren't for them, we would have had to pay exorbitant 350 bucks to get our car towed. Really special business with really nice people behind it. Highly recommend.

Completely found this place by chance. They were running a special for the first week of August - $55 for a dozen Sydney rock oysters & 2 pieces of Barra (grilled or deep fried) with chips and salad. We got two to share between 2 adults and 2 children. It was the best fish and chips I can remember having. Ever. Comparing to Scratchleys and Bubs, there was no comparison. For quality/price ratio, this was way out in front. Fish was beautiful and delicate, no hint of muddiness. I strongly recommend the grilled barra over the deep fried - whilst the batter on the deep fried was light and crispy, the flesh is very delicate and subtle, and far better enjoyed grilled. Chips were perfectly crispy, and the salad as fresh as you can get (they grow their vegetables hydroponically onsite), as well as perfectly dressed. The owners are perfect hosts as well! Big thumbs up - the only place I'd go for a great seafood meal in the Hunter. (Definitely worth doing the tour too - we weren't sure we would, but very glad we did!)

This place has great presentation, friendly staff and meal options. The food looks stunning and the place is beautiful. You can't beat live fish swimming around you as you enjoy tasty food and ice cold drinks in the breezy shade. The kitchen is also very catering. I ordered a meal to be made vegetarian and no capsicums. The staff did not hesitate and even suggested what fresh vegetables I could choose from their garden! Don't forget to take a tour of their hydroponics and barra farm set-up!

Came here Saturday 29th April. It was super busy so would suggest making a booking on a Saturday. We came a little late so sadly did not allow enough time for lunch, only a half dozen oysters as a quick bite before our 2pm tour. I was sad to have missed out as the barra could not be fresher as well as many of the veggies grown hydroponically on site. Would possibly suggest taking last orders at 3pm rather than 2. I loved feeding the fish out the front of the restaraunt and the funny little slurp/pop noise they make. Keep an eye out for big barry (?) the fat one who looks very different to the rest. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot (I won't share as I will let everyone find out for themselves). He was a young guy and new to doing tours but did a great job! This was probably one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you!

This is a hidden gem which will delight all your senses from the culinary feast on the table to the barra tour. Even with a large group at closing time, Madison accomodated us and obliged a special tour for those who could not make it on time for the 2pm slot. The Thai barra special melted in our mouths and the kids enjoyed seeing the barra tanks and the veggie tour. Definitely worth a visit when you are in Newcastle or Port Stephens

The Cookabarra was added to our, regular lunch time 'must try' restaurant list. Well i'm glad it was.... After a quick drive there from the CBD, we arrived for lunch on a typical glorious day. As there was a slight 'on shore' breeze blowing, we decided to sit outdoors under the 20 foot wide awning.... what an atmosphere, we could have stayed there all day.. We all had to try the 'Barra' as it was filleted fresh from the on site Barramundi farm a just a few hours before we arrived. Well it was great, the old Aussie fish n chips... We ended up skipping desert and enjoyed a tour of the farm instead. Congrats to Nick, the management and staff for a great day out experience...

Amazing place for barramundi. A great selection of seafood cuisines and very very yummy. Price is high but definitely worth the price. Definitely recommend trying out the Whole Thai Barramundi

We had a great lunch at the Cookabarra restaurant. Fish and chips were delicious and hearty. The entree of salt and pepper calamari was excellent as well. The outdoor setting on the balcony near the Koi pond is very relaxing and comfortable. We also had a walk through the hydroponic garden and aquaculture shed where the Barramundi are 'grown'. People were very friendly which made it a very relaxing lunch place.

1 hour excursion starting at 11am of how barramundi is farmed, followed by a good hearty meal of barramundi in different styles and other food including pizzas. Barramundi cooked well and without the earthly smell. The excursion provided a great insight. Highly recommended in spending 2.5 to 3 hours here.
