Comments of Oiden Bowl Bar
D. N.
Oiden (and Mappen) are the epitome of bang for your buck. A ludicrously affordable Japanese eatery with the taste and flavour to back it up.
Grab a meal for $8-15 and be on your way. Great selection of mains and side dishes.
A staple of George St.
V. D.
Great place, good for value.
The beef rice reminds me of the Japanese red rock. Similar but different tase.
They also provided chili powder.
the salmon rice is pretty good.

I can not wait to go back. The moment I stepped inside I liked this place. It has a really cool, authentic Japanese feeling to it and the staff were really happy and friendly. The takeaway bowl I had was delicious and filling and for such a reasonable price. Im only in Sydney for a week but I think I'll visit this place at least another two or three times before i leave and try more of the menu.
E. M.
Generous serve and very reasonable prices. I got the karaage chicken cheese & egg bowl. The flavour of the chicken was great, though it wasn't at all crispy. The egg was beautifully cooked and the cheese is a great addition to the dish. All in all, very satisfying.
I didn't like the pickled ginger, it was far too salty.
P. T. N.
I can’t express how much I love this place. Tasty food options with reasonable price and amazing staffs. TAKE MY MONEY!
B. M.
The food is extremely tasty, members of the staff are agile and friendly.
No doubt everything I have tried here is quite nice but what I like the most is their create your own mini bowl.
On top of everything else the food is pretty cheap and one of the relatively healthier options.
M.
My absolute favourite when it comes to Japanese street food in Sydney. Discovered this place about 6 years ago and never stopped visiting since. Great food for an affordable price. Must try the karaage chicken and the 3 choices menu.
S. Y.
One of the only few places left that do not have an inflated price after the Omircon wave, and guess what, their quality did not drop at all.
H. O.
THE BEST!!! My favourite japanese mini restaurant. Super affordable and delicious. Wide menu range and sizes which makes it really flexible for us to choose.
A must try! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ♡♡♡
e.
starting from only $9.90, you can get a hearty, filling donburi with ontama (soft egg) and bbq wagyu beef 🤤 the beef is such good quality for the price and quite generous servings too! all w a wonderful gooey egg!
they have a range of options including fresh salmon, katsu curry, teriyaki chicken, slow roasted pork... just to name a few 🥰 i always come here for the authenticity, great value, exceptional service, and ofc amazing food! they never miss ‼️
check out my food insta @erinxeats for more!

Great spot for a cheap and filling Japanese meal in Sydney CBD.
They specialise in rice bowls with different meat toppings, I would recommend the Wagyu beef or chicken karaage. Do yourself a favour and get the “otama” half boiled egg - the egg mixes through the rice to make it delicious and creamy!
With heaps of options under $10 you can’t go wrong. Definitely a busy spot around peak times so be prepared as there’s not much seating!
D. M.
We ordered 1 x Garlic butter teriyaki chicken and 1x ontama wagyu beef takeaway for dinner tonight. Absolutely loved it and price is very cheap which is a bonus! Although the line to order food was long that didn't bother me as I know its very popular. Will be a returning customer in the near future!
J. Q.
Great vibes, it emulates Japan’s casual restaurants quite well with traditional music and counter style set up.
Okonomiyaki ($3.80) was good especially for that price.
Salmon tataki bowl lacked flavour, would not order again, but would go back to this place in general to try other menu items
M. B.
If you feel like more than sushi but you don't have much time, Oiden Bowl bar offers lots of reasonably priced and quick Japanese meal. You can add soup and salad on top of your meal as part of combos. Otherwise, you can purchase takoyaki, croquettes, potato salad and other small size extras as side dish.
Y. W.
Reasonable price very traditional food.
K. O.
Oiden Bowl Bar is a Japanese fast food eatery with self service hot and cold donburi dishes. You choose a rice bowl that you want to order from a big menu from premium Wagyu Beef, tender roast beef, Grilled Teriyaki Chicken, Chicken Karaage, Stewed beef bowl, Special healthy bowl, Japanese curry rice to Japanese Hayashi rice. You can make it a value set meal with miso soup and homemade drink/salad. You can also choose some hot bar snacks and Japanese dessert and then find a seat to sit down and enjoy a quick and easy meal.
S. T.
Very nice fast fresh food at great prices. I visited for the first time this weekend and the service was super friendly. I love the concept of choosing your drink, ordering your main meal and then walking along to select any sides you would like. Great selection including crumbed tofu which was delicious. And the matcha milk was so good! Other nice little additions like seaweed salad and potato salad. I will definitely return.
A. M.
Love coming here! Food is affordable and delicious! I got the teriyaki chicken bowl with garlic but next time I think I’ll skip the garlic butter it didn’t need it as it was already delicious... the side are very cheap and good roo
C. T.
Recommended place to dine for quick and delicious Japanese styled meals. Ordered the Ontama BBQ beef bowl with spinach salad side and green tea. The service was fast, the food was tasty and the place was clean. The meals are also great value. Located away from the busy George st.
I. •.
An absolutely wonderful restaurant that gives filling meals at a generous price. The staff working are friendly, the food is of great quality and I look forward to returning soon!
M. C.
Pro: affordable price, fast when preparing food, clean
Con: *very bad customer service attitude, *not allowed to make any changes to the dish *the staff complain about your order with each other right in your face. *Recent price increase.
G. P.
I just had a Ontama Kare-age. Chicken was ok, but sauce amount was not enough for dish size. Egg on top was undercooked. I also had a Octopus ball entree which was tasty. Would probably try this business again.
C. C.
Great place for cheap eat in the heart of Sydney City. Great variety of Japanese food in budget price and customisable. I really enjoyed my curry rice with egg and cheese, they lightly grilled the cheese to bring out the flavours. Service was very quick, good place to have a quick eat before a movie starts.
A. T.
Perfect when you’re in a hurry and don’t wanna wait. A popular restaurant in a food court and always packed up. Place for cheap eats and various choices of rice and noodles. Most food are instant to eat and dnt need to wait. Staff are friendly. Some appetisers are cheap and yummy.
R. C.
delicious japanese food, reasonable price, friendly staff give me a good reason to come back.. worth to mention is their song playlist, makes it seem like it's in a rural area of Japan. Try Ontana Salmon.. always love it.
A. C. (.
I have loved this Japanese restaurant very much since 2014.
Their curry is very delicious and I highly recommend their curry.
Their menu is always very diverse.
I love their potato pancakes and Kala chicken. They are really delicious.
But I sincerely hope that the restaurant can make sure that the kala chicken is juicy and delicious every time, and not fried too old , please.
The restaurant prices are very reasonable. I hope the restaurant can restore any three options for only $9.9. Because it is very suitable for students and children.
Finally, I hope that the Japanese clerk will not forget your welcome customers and thank you customers for Japanese. In covid-19, don't forget the passion of the Japanese to serve every customer. Because all my Japanese friends think Oiden Bowl Bar is not worth five stars. Because there is no Japanese spirit at all. But I am willing to give five stars for curry, because the quality is always the same.
K. J.
Fast, good taste, reasonble prices. But recently the cold dishes have gone up on prices.
Credit cards welcomed with 1.5% fees. Overall good lunch venue.
O. L.
Nice place for a quick bite. The bowls are pretty decent but I won’t recommend the fried food here. Quality was quite average
J. T.
Fast service japanese restaurant. This place come with affordable price and decent food. Wagyu premium beef gyuudon is yummylicious. It tastes strong and the texture is tender. Full of flavor. Salmon don was tasty sensing and distinguishing. Scrumptious , probably juicy in inside. Kinda perfect place for people when in a hurry. Various choices of rice and noodle. Waiting time no longer than 5 minutes. Staff were good
J. P.
I came here at 9pm and the servers were very polite and nice. No surcharge despite the fact it was ANZAC day. They weren't as tasty as Mappen/Oiden the udon place or the Japanese place across from them but still good. Overall food tasted okay and the price was decent.
Y. W.
As a Japanese food addict, I do really like exploring nice Japanese meals outside of Japan. This restaurant definitely is a must-try around Sydney CBD.
There is a wide range of selections, from pork, beef, plain udon to tempura rice bowl. There are also several side dishes, like seaweed salad, fried chicken, to choose from.
Even after ordering one main meal and 3 extra side dishes, they only cost me a total of 13.60 AUD, which is a very reasonable price to eat around Sydney CBD.
The taste of the food was very authentic and really tasty. I did have a feeling of being in a local restaurant in Japan when eating this meal.
R. N.
Have been a great fan of Oiden since 2017. The best choice if you want a healthy, yummy and quick Japanese lunch around $10 near Town Hall. The seat setting makes it easy even if you are on your own.
My top 3 choices are raw salmon with half-boiled egg (pic 1 top), roast beef curry (pic 4), and the recent tuna poke bowl (pic 5). Oishii desu!!!!!
P. L.
Prices are great and it also tasted pretty good. Serving size justifies the price but does the job for a quick feed. Staff are friendly and a lot of seating options inside and out.
E. O.
No frills cafeteria style eatery. You walk down the line, order your items, pay, sit down, and eat. Great food.
K.
Quite affordable dishes and great tasting variety of rice dishes, they have lunch sets as well. The interior design is like their mappen shop, a show retro feel.
R. T.
Always good beef bowl with rice and kimchi. The side vegetable selection was always lovely.
A. X.
Being here multiple times and never disappoints me. Large portion, quick service, nice flavour ,really cheap price and you can be very full on only$10. It’s my must go for quick bite and budget lunch/dinner !
S. A.
Discovered this place through Google Map reviews and well done Google Guides! The wagyu beef bowl was delicious and value for money and the little sides such as bamboo shoots were really yummy. We went around 1145 hence there were ample seats and no queue. The only small gripe was lots of plastic cups used.
A. P.
The staffs are so friendly, the food is good at its price point. Cosy atmosphere and a vast variety of side dishes to choose.
A.
Their ontama wagyu beef bowl is the bomb!
S. S.
Cheap and cheery with lots of options! Love the quick service and tasty food. The ontama area made so creamy, it's an experience in its own!
b. b.
One of the best Japanese curry I have ever had in Sydney!! The price is amazing for the taste. The curry is so rich in flavour, and the side dishes are delicious as well. One of the better Japanese cheap eats in Sydney!!
S.
Great place to eat with dishes available in different sizes for those seeking a lighter or more filling meal. A good variety of options available for their many rice dishes. Great prices and very affordable for those on a budget.
J. K.
Good food and price!
I just hope they serve pork katsudon soon.
I really wanna try real Japanese katsudon :)
A. S.
Cheap and cheerful, and always tasty food. Exceptional customer service on the rare occasion when they ran late with a special order
A. I.
One of recommended restaurant when you're in Sydney. It is small but very comfortable and organised. Love the japanese ambience. They served delicious food with affordable price (around 7$ - 16$). Eating bbq wagyu beef rice bowl is a must do here. The place can be very crowded during busy time.
J. B.
My friends and I eat at Oiden pretty often, and that's for a good reason - it offers tasty, affordable, filling food that accommodates a variety of palates. A simple rice bowl with your choice of protein (salmon, chicken, beef, or you can opt for the vegetarian option), and choice of sides (including seaweed salad, shrimp sticks, and karage chicken). Great for anyone on a budget who wants a tasty meal in the CBD.
J. S.
Very tasty, reasonably priced, the best Japanese rice bowl in Sydney
D. M.
First time at Oiden today, can report that it was a very pleasurable experience! Great value for money, fast service and delicious food. De, a gentleman that served us was amazing in explaining the menu and ordering style and was very patient as we learn how to order. Overall, great experience.
J.
Very delicious. Ordered a Roast Beef Bowl and a Beef Croquette. Highly recommended.
M. F.
Lovely chill atmosphere and affordable but delicious Japanese food
Y. L.
One of my favorite lunch place when I am alone. There are so many choices. And the three for $9.9 is a good one of them. Nice flavor.
A. L.
Curry is better than the hashed beef. Kara-age chicken tasted good too.
s. V.
Very tasty and high quality food. The staff are very king and pleasing.
g. t.
Very tasty food for a great price, great service and the food is served quickly. The meat grilling was very efficient, having looked at it myself. Recommend anyone who likes Japanese style rice bowls to come here.
T. P.
This place has become one of my favourite go tos for a tasty and affordable meal! Quick service and always great quality!
D. H.
No doubt this is my favourite jap restaurant in city! Highly recommend you try their BBQ wagyu beef bowl here!btw staff here have great service attitudes and thie price is descent!
H. T.
One of the go-to choices, due to the low price and great quality. I usually go with kake soup with soba noodles and stewed beef.
I.
I was excited to try this place after seeing all the 5 star reviews, but it was pretty disappointing. The beef hayashi is sour tasting with no discernible beef bits. It is 2/5 stars, with extra +1 because of the cheap price and fast service.
D. A. T.
Love it! A cheap but delicious food store inner Sydney CBD. Good service. Friendly staff.
by ProTadTv
J. S.
Affordable and great tasting beef rice bowls. Cheap add ons for eggs, soup and home made drinks too
V. L.
Food so cheap and good serve. Definitely worth the money. Okomomiyaki only $3.8 and delicious!
M. R.
Cheap and delicious Japanese noodles, highly recommend the udon!
T.
Great cheap and fast eats. If you're in a rush or low on funds, then this is the place for you. Oiden Bowl Bar has just the fill with your favourite Japanese rice combos. Great if you're by yourself or with a friend.
There's even the option of going to the any of the three neighbouring Japanese noodle and rice stores and sitting together with different meals which is awesome. Shared seating means that your friend who likes noodles is happy and your other friend who likes rice is also happy.
A. F.
We found this place by accident but the food was amazing. The place itself was nothing fancy to look at but the service was great and so cheap. It was so good we went back the next day.
M. C.
Almost fortnightly go-to place for dinner. Easy to order, food comes out pretty quick and it's always delicious.
N. C. D. G.
Cheap and healthy food, Japanese style. Really like this place as a default eat out choice.
J. V.
Sydney cheap eats! Delicious and best value.
O. Y.
Ok food. If you're looking for cheap and fast food, it might be good. Otherwise I'd avoid it.
S. N.
Menu is massive and has a great variety of meat, pork, chicken, and fish dishes to choose from. Sides are plentiful and fairly priced. Service is speedy and top notch. Atmosphere is great unfortunately no liquor licence so you cannot consume alcohol on the premises but other than that its a great place to grab a quick feed.
M.
Curry doesn’t have meat in the 3 bowl set but overall very good
o. t.
Went in last night on the basis of other reviews and enjoyed Hubert very much. They only accept bookings for 6 or more so expect a wait if it is a busy night. We got in before the rush but still faced a 30 minute wait so opted for the bar seating (and menu). I had the steak frites and throughly recommend. Excellent piece of meat and cooked perfectly rare.
s.
One of the best Japanese restaurants without sushi! Tasty food, variety of food types on menu, good prices, cool atmosphere, friendly staff, fast service, are the reasons I keep coming back year after year! Been to Japan, and some of the dishes here are even better than ones in Japan 🌟
F. R.
Traditionally a cheap-eats Japanese option which has expanded its range to some really good stuff in the menu. Two things however: be careful with the side dishes though, they can quickly become more expensive than the main dish if you keep adding them. Another major gripe is how people keep a table for themselves without ordering first. Not too much the staff can do despite the signs when people are selfish and stupid though.
R. Y.
My favourite all time place to eat. So good in taste, price wise and the system. I feel in Japan, also the song playlist. If you in a rush, or looking for a main meal or even just small dish, this place is the all rounder place to eat. Love it
A. L.
Constantly delicious food at a good price. Minimum $10 for EFTPOS.
N. H.
Very Affordable and tasty Japanese food
M. G.
Had the mini set $9.90 which could consists of one udon bowl and 2 rice bowls, with different toppings you can choose from. Also tried the fish tempura and Osaka seafood roll. Not bad overall, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here.
Y. L.
Quick food that is so yummy and does not sacrifice quality. Roast beef is so tender and sauce is amazing. Great selection of side dishes and tempura. Amazing matcha milk that is better than oh matcha although a bit sweet. And best of all dirt cheap! Atmosphere is chilled ~
A. Y.
Looking a for a quick and budget friendly meal then this is the place.
E. C.
Always high quality and affordable main and side dishes.
J. P.
Like it's sibling stores, Oiden specialise in rice dishes and meals, available in both dine in and takeout. Once you enter the store, if feels as if you have gone back in time to the Showa Era (1926 - 1988), with wallpapers and music reflecting the same period.
In the COVID Pandemic, they have adopted an additional measure that most stores haven't: each staff now wears a mask and glove when preparing food, and they request you to check in online to keep a record of patrons who have recently visited.
H. Y.
The beef bowls are really good and it is pretty cheap for Sydney standards.
M. Y.
Need a quick, tasty, affordable bite to eat? Do it! Perfect for a treat for the budget traveler. Same owner as ramen bar next door that has equally good food. Highly recommended.
M. L.
A solid favourite of mine. Fast service. Delicious, healthy and reasonably priced food. Prices are excellent for the quality especially within such a hot location. It's near the cinema, train station and on George St.
It's also authentic taste and experience.
B.
Quick and good food with reasonable price here. Friendly hard working staff is very impressive too. As a Japanese and have eaten a lot of Japanese meals in Japan and Australia, I can highly recommend this restaurant.
S. K.
Really good and affordable wagyu beef bowls!
N.
With $6.90 (as of July 2018) you could get a regular beef udon noodle soup. I love it! delicious and the portion is just right. Great winter warmer!
They have other variety too like ramen, rice bowl etc.
Credit card is accepted.
You can not reserve the seat. Its not a table service. Must queue to order, pay and find table.
After you finish they would appreciate if you bring back the tray (next to the cashier)
If you need to go to the toilet you must request key from the cashier.
K. Y.
Been coming here for years. Incredibly delicious Japanese food at a very afforable price. Great for a quick lunch.
A. P.
I’ve been here at least 10 times. It’s simply amazing. Quality - price unbeatable! Love it!
М. Т.
A nice lovely bar. But then on 20/07/2020 at 7:19 PM. I patiently waited in line, just when I'm about to order off the mini set, the boy AGGRESSIVELY TOOK THE MENU AWAY WITHOUT ANY SAYING ANYTHING. At least try to explain first. I found this is very RUDE and INAPPROPRIATE, especially in Japanese culture. I left immediately, Unbelievable!
t. m.
Food is nice however, the english issue is strong, which is not surprising for about $10 an hour. Food portions used to be bigger. Difference between large and regular size is you get more rice. And recently they stopped serving soba noodles changing it to cheap ramen noodles.. Used to be a favourite place. Not anymore.
G. M.
Feels like you are dining in Japan. Nice decor and reasonable pricing makes this restaurant a perfect place to dine regularly.
Main dish ranges from under $5 and you can choose additional sides from $1 a piece. There is no need to book, because in true Japanese style dining, you eat and go.
T.
I came here today for the first time and I must say, I was very pleased and happy I did. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would. In fact, I may change my rating if I have an even better experience the next time I come. The food was very good, and honestly, I'm a picky eater. I would definitely come back. The prices are super affordable and worth it. The food was good too, my only detraction is that my (hot) appetizer was served kind of cooled / warm-ish so it wasn't freshly cooked. But next time if it is, I may change my rating to a 5 :)
S. O.
Fantastic quick Japanese spot. If you're ever in the need for a bite to eat, you fancy Japanese donburi (bowl of rice w/ meat and other stuff) this place is wonderful. Good pricing, open seating, and the food is consistent (read "not amazing, but pretty good").
J. Y.
Hands down one of the most awesome, under $10 lunch places which lets you order mini meals. You can literally get 3 entree-sized rice or noddle dishes for $9.90, and add $1 or $2 for lots of little add-ons like seaweed, crab sticks and miso soup. The food quality is high and seating surprisingly sufficient even with the super long lines. Absolutely worth a try or 100 times if you work/live nearby.
J.
One of the best Japanese places in Sydney and is a must visit. Always high quality and price and serving size is fair. You won't be disappointed.
A. S. (.
A semi-self served restaurant where the food is cheap and tasty.
My favourite dish is their beef rice with soft boiled egg.
The self serve can be a bit confusing at first, as the basic menu gives a huge selection of noodles or rice base with some toppings. For that, you need to order from the service counter. Then you move along into the self-serve bar where you can take as many extra toppings as you like. While the initial cost of the base is cheap, the toppings can add up the cost quite quickly!
F. E. S.
Great variety of japanese rice bowls at an affordable price. You can have karaage bowl, curry bowl, roast beef bowl, etc and also can add other fried items to complement your meal.
L. J.
Cheap and quick service. Food is great, and the side dishes are really good too. I’ve been here quite a few times and it has yet to disappoint me. The place is pretty packed at lunch, so finding a seat would be hard. Highly recommend coming here.
A. L.
One of my favourite restaurants, my go-to when I cannot decide what I want to eat when I'm out in the area. My favourite at the moment is the ontama salmon rice bowl, with a side of fried tofu. Quick and efficient service. Very affordable food. Many options for serving sizes - Doesn't make you feel ill and bloated afterwards, just satisfied. Tasty and healthy. Why wouldn't you give this place 5 stars?
K. Z.
I have been coming here since they first opened nearly 10 years ago. It's a fantastic spot for a cheap warm meal.
W. F. E.
A popular and cheap way to dine like robots on an assembly. It's fun really. You pick a core dish and then pick a bunch of optionals along an assembly line. A quick, cheap way to have a snack.
For the hungry or non small appetite people; this place won't fulfill you but come in for the experience. I think I prefer the place next store but both are always busy so you may have to rock up at a random non eating time or settle.
V. L.
The meal tastes ok. Ordered a Regular Beef Curry and Value set B which costs me $14.30. It supposes to be $7.50 + $3.50 = $11? I think I won't go again. Recommend to walk a bit further to MISO in world square which offers lunch box takeaways at approx. $10-$12.
C. T.
Usually does a good job. 1 stars less because of their customer service. I once ordered everything I wanted and paid for it by card but they forgot my miso soup despite mentioning it several times. They have a card limit on their eftpos machine but kept telling me that I can't use my card to pay for the miso even though it was the cashier's fault. There was a long line and I could have made things much worse for them but I let it go then and will tell the world here. I often frequent this restaurant, they do not tend to remember people. Don't expect a warm welcome.
L. C. J.
Cheap and fast

1 bowl is not enough for you lunch……

Teriyaki chicken was delicious, paired with the curry it was pretty good.

Fantastic food, we are here at least once a week
Kimchi beef with egg yum

me and family love to eat here!
it is cheap and yummy japanese food right in the middle of CBD sydney.
the food price start from $ 3.00
we love the salmon rice there... its only $5.00 a bowl for large size.
we never passed our budget to eat outside when we go there.
A. E.
Great fast food with good prices, love the ontama karage bowl and all the extras you can have on the side. Only wish there was more seating when it's busy. Takeaway is great as well.
L. A. L.
Nice place for a quick japanese meal. The price is cheap too.
P. П.
Delicious magical (rice + stuff) dishes (noodle bar next door) the two places have an amazing old school Japanese theme with matching music ~ best ever ~
I have had their vegetarian dishes, and some have a subtle sour flavour which brings to mind traditional Japanese flavours (though I may the most well versed..)
O. A.
Excellent had the garlic butter teriyaki chicken fresh and decent servings!
The match green milk tea is one of the best, they sure have the right matcha to milk ratio DELICIOUS.
However the add-ons like the fried chicken is expensive over $2 a piece and it isn't that big.
R. D.
Not the worst, a bit pricier than before
G. C.
Oiden is where I go for a quick, tasty and cheap Japanese lunch. You have to queue up and order from the counter, canteen-style but the food is good for the price, and for what it is. They have a seating both inside and out in the center, but they do take aways as well. Don't forget the free tempura flakes by the register!
C.
Really good quick inexpensive meals. Delicious karaage chicken.
A. K.
This is crazy delicious.. I love their wagyu rice bowl with half boil egg. I would also recommend having it with the octopus ball, matcha milk and miso soup. Great full meal for cold weather.
A. T.
Quick, simple, efficient, effective. The Onsen tamago (semi-cooked egg) is a must have addition, and you should add it to your main. Only issue is with space and not many vegetarian options (though I'm a meat lovers, so the Wagyu beef option is simply tantalising).
C. V. L.
Amazing Japanese fast food.
Such reasonable price too. My favourite is Small Ontama Mentaiko Bukkake Soba, with side dishes.
Although it might look very packed at times. Seats clear up very fast.

Rated the food very good, for a $10 meal, you get freshly grilled chicken and a nice bowl of rice with atypical Japanese seasoning - or a Japanese curry on rice. Then you get to pick ur sides at varying prices. Cheap filling and good. And they have srirachi
S. N.
Food is very nice. However, do not expect any good service.
P. C.
Stick to curry rice cause they are cheap and filling. Avoid the salmon bowl cause idk it doesn't taste like salmon
R. J.
Basically nice, but the roast beef bowl was terrible. Don't order it. Also, the design inside the restaurant was like ridiculously fake old Japanese style. Any restaurants in Japan don't do that, haha.
T. H.
Bustling and cozy place to go for quick, cheap and tasty Japanese food. 'Rice bowl bar' is really the best description of this place. You start off by getting an empty tray, and then choose the base rice dish, choose size, toppings, and sides. By the end of it, you will would have a good hearty meal for mere $10-12.
My favourite is ontama karage, which is served with soft boiled egg and topped with delicious karage chicken. Try mixing the sauces and eggs together with rice.
I am now a frequent visitor - it is the one of the best option to grab a quick meal before making in time for movie.
A. M.
Awesome place. I've been going here since 2012. Great food and amazing prices. Nice vintage Japanese music playing in the background as well.
R. d. R.
Oiden is all about rice dishes, cafeteria style ordering followed by a self-serve fried food counter (like pork, beef etc) and lastly a selection of sides before you top your bowl off with crunchy crumbs and shallots. Just like any good fast food joint, its open late till 10pm and is great value for money and super tasty.
A. H.
My go to place for japanese. Cheap and huge portions of quality food. Very fast service too. Oh and try the honey lemon homemade drink... delicious!
E.
Just like it's sister store Mappen, Oiden provides great japanese food for very reasonable prices. Instead of noodles, Oiden serves up rice dishes such as tuna bowls, curry and more! Prices start from a low $7 for a main, with a couple dollars for tempura and more! Sure beats fast food as these prices.
Y. N.
Reasonable prices and good taste of food here. Love it!
W. D.
My partner and I go here whenever we are in the city, because of the awesome comfort food and because it is cheap. haha.
I'm a huge fan of the Ontama Takana Salmon (sp?).
5/5 hope it never closes :)
C. a. M.
Oiden is a small Japanese restaurant, that you have most likely walked past unknowingly. They do not have much of an impact on their signage, however they are known for their curry and don (rice) dishes. The Three choice set is great for value.
Z. L.
Tender and succulent beef coupled with the spice of the ginger creates a concoction of culinary delight. The curry and the hash beef is one of the best in Sydney. There is a lot seating and the service is quick and efficient. Easy to see from outside and a streamlined workflow.
R. A.
Very authentic Japanese style curry house. Prices are very very affordable and value for money is great. Only problem is its cash only, but there is an ATM right outside.
R. Y.
Central location. Authentic Japanese curry plus a lot of side dishes to choose from. It only takes cash but there's an ATM close by. The potato salad is delicious and the staff are very friendly!
t. d. f.
Fast and friendly Japanese food! Authentic flavours at Oiden at very reasonable prices (dishes from $3.90) - gotta love their teriyaki chicken and potato salad!
O. T.
Menya Oiden is my favourite place to get a quick, cheap and healthy Japanese salad. Oiden specialises in Japanese rice bowls and salads while its sibling Menya mappen, which is just next door, specialises in noodles. Besides the delicious salad one of my ultimate favourite is the ontama egg, which is an egg poached in its shell. The result is delicious gooey, half done egg.
They also employ a very efficient Japanese style self-service cafeteria ordering system, where by you come in and order your food and pick it up straight away on the same tray. As you move through the queue you are then able to add additional fried items and side dishes. As you reach the end, you pay and find a spot to tuck in to your delicious meal.
This system, makes ordering fast. Patrons are expected to eat then return your tray and dishes then leave as soon as they finish their meal. This is not a place to linger but the quick and cheap meal always entices a lot of younger patrons and students.

Try these: Teriyaki chicken salad with Ontama.
A. C.
Best value eatery in the city! When I first moved to Sydney I lived in the building above here and this became my first choice for great tasting & filling food without spending a lot of money. The Ontama Yakitori (Teriyaki Chicken) is a delight!
J. P. R.
This is one of my favourites restaurants :) everything works here: great variety of dishes, reasonable prices, quick service and staff are friendly... it’s not a surprise this place is always busy :-)
J.
Lots of food choices and fast service.
K. K.
This is a great place to go eat if you want to get great Japanese food at a low cost or maybe when you don't have time. Sometimes the lines are long if you go there around the busy periods but when you do get your food, you won't regret it.
At Oiden, it specialises in rice bowls (donburi (丼)), curry and hayashi rice (ハヤシライス). They do have side dishes where you can choose from like tempura, natto, Japaneses sweets and many others. I have tried most of the dishes on the menu but usually I get the curry or hayashi rice, which I believe that Oiden is the only place in the city or in all of Sydney to serve hayashi rice if I can't be bothered to make it myself at home. I also get a iced matcha milk tea which I think is quite good compared with many other places in the city.
Similar to Mappen, overall a great place to eat when you need to save money and want to eat great tasting Japanese food.
M. P.
Menya Oiden is a Japanese fast food eatery which specialises in rice bowls of goodness. If you're into noodles - go next door to Menya Mappen. If you've never eaten here before, it's quite an attraction - it's like going to a cafeteria with your meal tray and asking for what you want. They put together the dish ingredients in front of you.
I also suggest you get some side dishes like the tofu or pork katsu. It's cheap, it's fast, it's popular and you can't go wrong if you want something quick and easy.
K. C.
Trump: it’s beautiful! And, it’s beautiful!
E. H.
Large is huge size - if you're really hungry and need something healthy and delicious fast - this place is great. I love the vegetarian ontama, but everything is great.
a.
Cheap, fast and yummy place to eat. Tried the wagyu kimchi rice bowl. Good flavours can't complain. Felt like I was in Japan.
K. L.
One of three Japanese canteen style 'fast food' restaurants. This one specialise in rice based dishes like hash beef, grilled wagyu beef, teriyaki chicken to name a few out of the hundreds of possible combination because you can self serve and pick from the many deep fried food section (karage, croquette, chicken, fish..) or extras from the fridge (seaweed, mixed salad, potato). Don't forget to grab a tray before ordering.
D. H.
the restaurant is Japanese rice .
my favourite dish is salmon rice. it's only 2.90 dollars !
cannot find another restaurant cheaper and yummy than it!
almost every students knew this place !
C. D. (.
Homely dishes that wont blow your mind but will hit the spot when you crave something wholesome. Can get expensive as its just a standard bowl of rice with topping costing more than $10.
s. t.
This is the first restaurant I eat in city in Sydney. I just arrived here one week at that time. This restaurant have tasty food and reasonable price, and I really love it. And it is a place with memories, lots of my friends eat here.
T. W. D.
Oiden Oiden Bo Boiden... Banana Fana Fo Foiden... Me My Moiden... OIDEN!!
Oiden will forever be linked to my early days in Sydney - when I was afraid to spend more than $10 on a meal since I was unemployed in a foreign land.
My two (2) favorite bowls:
Ontama Beef Bowl (Stewed Beef w/Rice and Soft Boiled Egg)
Oroshi Beef Bowl (Stewed Beef w/Rice and Ponzi Infused Radish)
Large for only $7.90!!!!
The place is hidden away in a quasi-shopping centre on George Street. It can fill up quickly during peak hours. But there are plenty of tables just outside the restaurant, so you'll always have a place to sit and enjoy your food. I love sitting by the giant window at one of the bench seats... It's a perfect place to people watch and feed into every voyeurs fantasy - I turn on my "O" Face when I know people are watching me eat. I make that beef bowl sexier than Miranda Kerr at a Victoria Secret Fashion Show. I only know this because people don't run away, but rather rush to queue up to order :)
I like adding a ton of crispy tempura flakes to my bowl as well as chili powder and a squirt of chili sauce with every spoon full.
C.
Best value for money. Always delicious, always filling. The go to for a quick meal when I can’t decide what Japanese dish I want.
I. H.
Tasty food. They prepared food very fast. But it's not that clear to make orders, and seems always have many people waiting in the quene, I need to order it in no time which made me easier to choose a wrong meal.
M. S.
Good portion sizes and reasonable price.
R. I.
Great Japanese food for very reasonable price, just love the ambiance, old Japanese music playing in the background. Teleports me to somewhere I have seen in a movie every time I come here for a quick meal
e. N.
It's a wow. 😁 Amazing food with a cheap price. 😍
I. Z.
I honestly cannot imagine my life without this place. Quick service. Easy and simple food. Go simple with an Ontama Takana Salmon or have something neat like Garlic Butter Teriyaki. Really easy on the wallet as well. Cash only.
A. W.
You can get a meal for under $10 and you will walk away with a full stomach. Perfect for a quick before movie dinner as it's just across the event cinema in George Street!!
S. T.
Excellent Japanese style rice bowls. Hashed Beef is a favourite here including the beef curry rice. Sister-location to Mappen Udon Bar next door.
J. J.
I come to oiden all the time cause it's always yummy (especially roast beef Curry and kimchi gyudon) and the portions are really good and filling and it's cheap!! 😋👍
A. A.
Nice japanese food with cheap price!! It has 2 others sisters restaurant beside, that add more variety of foods to choose.
T. K.
This rice loving sister to Menya Mappen is a great way to enjoy all of the quick service and no-fuss format the hit noodle bar, but in rice form. The toppings are varied and tasty, and it's great value for money. It is slightly more expensive than Mappen, but really, you get great bang for your buck, especially if you're after a quick meal in the city.
Consistent, and reliable, this is a great option especially for busy individuals in the city.
P. G.
Great, quick & efficient service. Great food & Reasonable prices. The only place in sydney that has chocolate daifuku left!!! I have been a regular for many years and I highly recommend this place.
J. D.
Oiden has the best Karaage I've ever had - and at a great price.
They have awesome half-boiled eggs (Ontama).
I love the atmosphere every time I walk in.
I recommend the Ontama Karaage with extra Ontama and extra Karaage and Matcha Milk :)
A. S.
Pretty good, can get a super cheap meal if you need it, or add some goodies ontop too.
There's a minimum $10 for card though.
R. H. N.
Consistently good Japanese food at incredibly affordable prices. The ontama salmon bowl is my go to every time.
J. D.
Quick, cheap and delicious meals. Always a good lunch time option, avoid the main lunch rush if you can.
A. W.
Cheap as chips!
Japanese home style rice dishes - tummy fillers with no bells and whistles... lunch for 2 $13
Note: mobile phone is taken as a deposit for the toilet key!!!!!!
F. K.
This is the Mappen of rice (it is in fact right next to Mappen). If you don't know what that means, it's cheap, delicious Japanese fast food. Come in, order a bowl of rice (with curry, or kimchi beef, or something), and top it off with a selection artery-clogging, deliciously crunchy self-serve tempura. I personally find myself at Mappen more often, because I'm a noodle person, but on days when I want some rice fast-food style, then this is where I go.
L.
Fantastic food, we are here at least once a week
