Comments of Rick Stein at Bannisters

Wow what a surprise was our visit on new years eve! We booked a lunch to try it out again sonce we heard about a new French chef had take over the kitchen. And we were not disappointed at all. The food had such an uplift from the last time we visit it. Instead of heavy creamy dishes, the food was elegant, well-balanced and refined. As we love our food, we were so pleased to find such an improvement from our last visit. We highly praise the new chef and definitely will be back! The staff was lovely as well and very helpful. Highly recommend to try out the food. Especially the Smoked BBQ prawns with semolina!

The food was absolutely amazing. The service was next to none. It was an incredible experience. Food is expensive for what you get, but the name and service make up for it. I went all out with the seafood, and I feel like that was definitely the right choice. Next time I am in the area, I will definitely go back.

The service was very nice with constant water top ups and fresh bread, one server continued to make us laugh and explain each dish to us, super kind!
The food is delicious and fresh. The drink options were wide.
For 6 people we ordered Sydney rock oysters and all the entrees (sashimi, fish and shellfish soup, kingfish ceviche and chargrilled prawns with soft polenta). For mains we each ordered one, mainly the grilled snapper with prawn and mango salsa. We all left full!

We were welcomed an hour before our booking with a nice seat overlooking the sea for drinks. Dinner was excellent. Having watched Rick's shows, I could hear his voice describing how to have the dish! The staff were very attentive and we really enjoyed the experience. Chalky's picture was above the fire :)

An all round top notch dining experience
From the moment we were warmly greeted at the door to when we boarded our transport back to Bannisters Pavilion (where we were spending the night) - it was an excellent experience. Our hostess showed us to a beautiful corner table on the covered terrace. The menu was simple and had a good range of seafood and 1 meat dish (lamb rack). Prices are as expected for a fine dining restaurant but not outrageous. We were served by Kai who was knowledgeable, friendly and personable. The food portions were generous and everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. Having read some other mediocre reviews - we were not expecting to be too impressed but we could not fault anything. Oysters, tuna, prawns, shellfish soup, seafood stew and lamb were delicious and beautifully cooked and presented. The overall experience was several notches above the Rick Steins in Port Stephens where we dined about 6 months back. Kudos to the team - keep it up! We’ll definitely be back when in the area again.

Fantastic atmosphere and great service from the front of house team. Food was very good, but not exceptional. Our entrees of scallops and Japanese fish cakes were refined, while my main - a Rick Stein classic of deep sea fish casserole - was very tasty, though looked a bit bland. Their selection of wine by the glass was quite limited, but bottle selection was extensive. Come prepared to spend $100 to $150 per head for a special night out.

First time here, lovely. Hope to be back soon! Thanks to Ian for arranging a table for our party of 6. Stayed in By The Sea, beautiful. Excellent service. All of the staff are second to none. They work very hard and it shows in their service. One negative is that I expected the Ocean deluxe rooms to be slightly bigger. Other than that it was a wonderful stay. Not long enough!
D. C.
Incredibly delicious main meal and dessert so tasty. Highly recommend one situated on one of the best views in south coast. Great service

Absolutely amazing food and the service was excellent
Second time coming here and always such a great experience
It feels nice dining here..can't wait to go back again

Delicious and unpretentious! All staff were super accommodating and friendly. Fantastic service and even better food! The grilled and steamed snapper were to die for. The puffed quinoa in the chocolate dessert was also surprisingly good. Good atmosphere and views of the water. Would definitely come back

Very under whelming! Food was nothing special and a very limited cocktail selection on offer. Was not told when booking that NYE bookings weren’t able to watch the sun set by the pool, even though I asked to be seated there. Staff service was adequate, nothing out of ordinary, like the food. Very sorry we chose this venue for our special occasion! Definitely wouldn’t recommend!!

Nice food and good service. Lovely view and restaurant atmosphere. Dropped stars for small portion sizes, slow food turn out and value for money
Highlights were the oysters, the scallops and the deserts
Thanks for having us, we did enjoy ourselves but won't be back in again any time soon

Gorgeous ocean views, beautiful seafood menu and lovely drinks list. Food was fresh and flavoursome. Service attentive and friendly. Top notch dining experience for any seafood lover.

Perfect place for my Milestone celebratio

As expected it was true fine dining.
Staff: very friendly

Venue: stunning

Beautiful place. Views from the venue close to the ocean is fantastic. Food is great as this place is owned by a chef. Pool side food and bar available at both locations. Staff are absolutely on point. If you appreciate good service you will love this place. Luxury at its finest. This place is located near the beach so you can walk down the road for a swim. Parking available at both locations. There is a driver service between the two venues so might as well check them both out. The beauty of this place is off the scale. Also they accept room number payment across both venues so its easy. One love, cant fault
W. T.
Amazing food, great wine and fantastic service! Couldn't ask for anything better, every dish was fantastic and the desserts were out of this world. Special mention to the masala mussels, the panna cotta and the floating island.
C. C.
Our snapper was divine!
J. D.
The food was wonderful, like Rick Stein on a plate, simple food done well, really clean good upmarket fine dining foods. Coffee not that great though. Customer service was nice but not sincere and more transactional to get you in and get you out, which was a shame. But the food was divine. We loved the scallops and mussels entrees, the fish pie is a must try and the salmon curry with mango chutney and naan bread was delightful.

This is a difficult one to rate for me as I'm a big Rick Stein fan. The food was great, seafood was very fresh and cooked beautifully. Husband was disappointed by the fish pie, which I had to agree, the truffle was over powering for our particular taste. The service was very friendly and attentive enough. I felt it was reasonably priced, not to expensive. So nothing to complain about. However the whole experience just felt very underwhelming. I think I put it down to a lack of ambience or atmosphere. It just felt soulless. We would definitely return for the food and agree it's perfect for a casual long lazy lunch where you can appreciate the views, but I would lower your expectations for an evening dining experience.

We heard great things about this place, tbh we came here (Mollymook) just to eat here. Maybe our expectations were too high. The menu was fusion with a bit of asian, Mexican - it was a little all over the place.
We ordered a wide range of dishes, the waitress was scared it was too much food. All the seafood is fresh as, but the flavours in the dishes just didn't work for us.
The menu doesn't state what each dish contains as it only states the seafoods. If the menu was more descriptive, perhaps we wouldn't have ordered the dishes which we did not enjoy eating eg. the bouillabaisse with the strong fennel (liquorice) taste.
The best dish was the steamed whole snapper.
All the dishes were very average. And nothing was completely wow, we must come back here.
P. S.
Fabulous service. Good food but not great. Enjoyed our experience. My oysters were presented beautifully but quite small. Didn't live up to the hype.
T. G.
The seafood is the star at Rick Stein’s. Less (embellishment ) is definitely better with all the dishes sensitively but stylishly prepared. Superb, professional but warm service, great suggestions by our wait person from menu. We chose risotto (perfect and the right size for an entree), scallops, fish soup (intense flavour, delicate and excellent croutons and aioli), roasted Hapuka, both snapper mains. Desserts definitely worth a try and we chose tiramisu, crème brûlée , ice cream and trifle. All excellent !
A. W.
Visited for lunch. Soft and relaxed atmosphere, staff were friendly and attentive. We had our 6 month old and everyone was very helpful making sure he was comfortable.
Food had good flavours (most with an Asian theme) although some dishes were not authentic (e.g. som tom salad with cashews instead of peanuts).
Star lost for value as the dishes could have been larger for the prices, but overall a nice experience.
S. N.
We’ve been coming here infrequently but for years and the menu doesn’t change all that much. The dishes are good but some new choices would be welcome. The starters are pretty much universally to die for and have always been the stand out dishes. EDIT: However in 2015 we got 3 zucchini flowers and now in 2018 you only get 2 for the same order. That’s quite disappointing. From the ceviche, to zucchini flowers, to scallops, to sashimi, these entrees have always been our favourites and I am always tempted to make a dinner out of 3 of them. The mains could use the same care. The snapper seemed to lack flavour balance focusing on spicy for a dish that was too subtle to support it. The blue eye trevalla was over cooked unfortunately and a ways back I splurged on a small lobster which was over cooked. Having said that the seafood curry was delicious and we have had 2 fish dishes so good we keep coming back to try and recreate it. Desserts are mostly good with only one miss of an over cooked fondant but it’s hard to butcher a fondant. Even over cooked just becomes a delicious fudgy cake. The lime cheesecake is exactly what it says it is and the chocolate sphere was delicious.
M. R.
Amazing food, impressive service, and a pleasant atmosphere. I had the special for the night: moonfish sashimi entree, and a chocloate dacquoise dessert.
m. n.
well, being told that you should definitely book to avoid disappointment and having the Rick Stein name attached, gives the impression that one should expect an "up market" dining experience. I would give it 7 out of 10. The waitstaff are friendly and attentive and how should I put it.....give the impression of formal 5star fine dining, without quite the Swiss execution - but all good and enjoyable. The hit for me - a 10 out of 10 - was the spicy bloody Mary garnished with rosemary. I will always make them this way from now on. The zucchini flowers were ok but the batter a bit doughy, rather than crisp. The seafood soup was a bisque and whilst delicious, I was expecting chunks of seafood. Worth trying but no "wow". Did I mention very friendly staff?😁👍oh yes, almost forgot the delicious nori flavoured butter with the sourdough. a great idea!
A. G.
My wife took me here as a surprise for my birthday and it didn't disappoint.
The food was amazing, especially if you like seafood. The oysters were really fresh. The sashimi platter is definitely worth trying as it has a combination of salmon, mahi mahi, tuna and kingfish.
The lobster served is sourced fresh from Jervis Bay and is cooked in a beautiful sauce.
The staff look after you throughout the dining experience.
G. R.
Excellent produce and very flavoursome meals. Enjoyed the rock oysters, sashimi starter, and whole snapper for main. Service could be improved to be more seamless. The 10% surcharge for Sunday’s or public holidays always irks me. And then of course the credit card surcharge... but from a dining experience, it’s very good.

We’re occasional patrons of the Seafood Restaurant in Padstow and we all very much enjoyed a long family lunch at Rick Stein at Bannisters restaurant in Port Stephens last year. This year we’re campering from Sydney to Melbourne and have built-in a stop at Rick Stein at Bannisters’ other Australian restaurant at Mollymook, nearby Rick’s Australian home. We’ve arrived in the midst of a four day ‘weather bomb’, rain that’s unlikely to stop for another two days, very rough seas so there’re probably no boats going fishing so our expectations are set appropriately, but this is Rick Stein, right?
First impression: unremarkable. The restaurant doesn’t seem to have benefited from ex-wife and business partner Jill Stein’s designer touch. Dark blue carpet and staff uniforms remarkable only because they are so bizarre. There’s no view of the crashing Pacific arriving Australia’s east coast because of a line of straggly gum trees blocking the view. OK.
Tap, still or sparkling water? Tap, please. Indeed, as promised, straight from the tap along with a straight-from-the-tap chlorine smell. It’s a small effort to filter the tap water before serving it to your guests.
Sourdough bread slices, cooked by us today, served with two flavoured butters. Sourdough? It looks heavy, like it’s been over-proved or not properly proved in the fridge overnight. It is too dense. Right now we’re at a one, maybe two, out of ten, score. The only way is up!
Aperitifs? A G&T and a Bellini. Both are competent but unremarkable. The wine we chose is too. We're missing a Rick-owned or recommended wine like his old Tower labels.
The menu doesn't include a couple of dishes I’d read online a couple hours earlier and there’s a salmon curry dish which I also hadn’t clocked earlier. No, I'll stick with the snapper, a very lovely sustainable fish.
First course/starters/entrees: Lovely large fat mussels in an extraordinary fragrant Cambodian soup, presumably one Rick learned on one of his Asian tv series visits. One of the mussels is completely closed. Either the chef who prepared the dish didn’t notice one of the ten mussels she cooked and served into my dish was closed or she didn’t know you don't serve a closed mussel. I put it next to my half-eaten sourdough slice because I’m now ready to point this out to our server. She laughs. I explain that we always enjoy eating at Rick Stein’s restaurants in U.K. and Australia but when one of ten mussels served is closed it might indicate a dead, and therefore potentially dangerous, shellfish which I’m really not expecting at a Rick Stein restaurant. Off she goes and a minute later a colleague returns with an open mussel replacement in a small dish which really wasn’t the point.
Despite the rain and the recent devastating bushfires in the area the restaurant is filling up nicely, family groups and couples, friends eating together in what is probably one of the nicest restaurants in the area. But our feel, so far, is Sunday is the head chef’s day off and Rick himself is not expected to drop in today.
Mains: I’ve ordered simple fillet of snapper in a beurre blanc sauce, she’s ordered Rick’s signature fish pie which she always orders at Rick’s restaurants. And we wait, and wait. We consider we’re in the doghouse because of the mussel complaint, which they’ve offered to take off the bill.
The pie and snapper arrive and it’s clear the snapper is either overcooked or has been kept under the pass’s heated lamps too long. It’s pleasant but no cooking thermometer has been near this fillet. What a pity. The fish pie is excellent, again, but overall we’re not scoring better than a five. French beans and new potato side dishes are competent but no flavour of vegetable stock, no seasoning.
I order an affogato desert which arrives with a lovely Pedro Ximenez dessert wine alongside a ‘long black’ with milk on the side.
Indeed the mussels dish is not on our final bill but the usual Australian Sunday 10% supplement doesn’t feel appropriate.
A. F.
Absolutely amazing food. Everything from starter to dessert was exceptional. The service was great, and with this view, how could you not enjoy being here!
G. T.
Great place to get away from it all. Ask for room 22. Fire place, Roman bath, separate bedroom, pillow menu and well stocked mini bar and goodies that do not gouge the wallet and to top it all off - a breathtaking view just a stone's throw from the ocean. Welcoming front desk, Margaritas and Ardberg at the pool bar, Rick Stein Restaurant is excellent, great food, service and a wine list to match, must try the Warm Shellfish entree and the Singapore Chili Blue Swimmer Crab from Lake Illawarra.

Fabulous restaurant with a nice view.
Loved the soup and the dessert I had was super cute and delicous!!
Nice dining place to check out when you are in Mollymook :)

We love Bannisters!!!! Drove for the day stopped by, got sitted right away. Lovely staff amazing champagne selection, our favourite Ruinart was available, so it was an obvious choice 😊
It's our 2nd time visiting and we loved it. What a great spot, the restaurant is beautiful, cocktail bar is amazing with infinity pool overlooking the ocean. Deffinately will be back
C. D.
Really nice food. Excellent place for a special occasion. A love for seafood is a must. I had both the mussels as the starter and the lobster was an excellent choice.
A. B.
Fantastic service, great food and nice location. Creme Broulee to die for with exceptional curried samon
A. T.
The place was just lovely. We had a mainly seafood dish and oh my gosh was it delicious! From the olives and bread to nibble on to the oysters and lobsters this place was just perfect. The bread had a firm crust but was so soft in the middle even though it was sourdough. The olives were amazing, too. The oysters had been made perfect. They were not to sour but not to raw. The lobster was delicious. Though it was fairly small, it was filling. Not to mention the dessert was heaven. Customer service was polite and they gave us space but also made sure our needs were met in a respectful manner. The scenery was stunning and you could smell the coast. Just wow.
P. B. S.
Surprisingly low key setting but beautifully cooked fish ... warm shellfish & marinated salmon followed by the amazing tasty fish pie and sri lankan salmon curry ....
W. H.
Do it! Treat yourself to a meal that lives up to Rick’s reputation. Service was next level, every dish could be sampled multiple times.
L. p.
Absolutely delicious. Beautiful view, tasteful dishes, and thoughtful drink parings. Highly recommend.
C. N.
Lovely atmosphere. Great service. The seafood was very fresh. Dishes were nice but weren't wow. A lot of very simple recipes that were trying to showcase how great the produce was. To be honest, you could make a lot of these dishes at home. Overall, a good experience.
E. A.
Exceptional food and amazing service (Andrew has the cutest laugh spreading positivity). We will definitely come back 😍
A. J.
Me and my partner are not real fans of sea food. But we are from Sydney so as they say when in Rome do as the romans do. We were quite impressed with everything from food to service and value. We got the fish tacos which were amazing. As well as the scallops as entrees. We got our mains which was the snapper and I got the salmon curry both were amazing. Would definitely go back
G. B.
Fresh flavourful seafood, great views and good service. A little on the pricey side for where it is.
M. M.
Thank you for renewing our faith in restaurants. What a great night. Great food and a knowledgeable gentlemen waiter who explained all the dishes. His knowledge of the wines was also outstanding. Best restaurant we have been to in 5 years. Thank you to all the staff. Absolutely fabulous.
a. t.
Incredible menu, imaginative, reviewed daily and fit for kings and queens. Make your way here for an exquisite culinary experience, although not for a cheap dollar
K. W.
Super happy staff made this a great break in our lockdown journey. Not to mention the killer dessert - Malaga raisin ice cream
A. B.
Had a lovely meal, would definitely recommend
C. C.
Our snapper was divine!
D. B.
The food and service didn't disappoint, I had high expectations of the restaurant and it delivered. Excellent table service from engaged and happy staff. Congratulations we had a lovely experience.
N. G.
I can't fault the food or the service. Everything was perfect. However I've dropped a star for value for money. The starters we're all excellent, but my $44 main, a piece of salmon, was cooked perfectly, but I'm not sure I enjoyed it any more than the $12 salmon I cooked at home.
V.
Sensational even if old baldy wasn’t there food was to die for from cocktails to the dessert and everything in between - the scallops with hazelnut, bouillabaisse super yummy ( a little on the light side not rustic ) and Lobster thermidore fit for a king and queen the last time I ate lobster was in Padstow only the claws were different !
We drove a long way to get here and my wife was so happy to finally eat here the best scallops she’s ever eaten ( her words)
Don’t be afraid get here spend some money you can’t take it with you!! You won’t be disappointed
L. A.
A very nice restaurant with good food and good service. However, it's a bit overpriced.

We had a wonderful evening at Rick Stein at Bannisters. The setting is nice, the food was excellent. I am not a huge fan of seafood, so when I enjoy it as much as I did it must be good! Attention to detail from our waiter Curtis was incredible, give that man a raise. Bar staff are good too - I ordered a wet martini and was very happy with the outcome. Raisin ice cream with PX sherry was a wonderful finish to the meal.

Best seafood restaurant in NSW
Rick Stein is a MasterChef 👍👍👍
Have to try it!
A. C.
It's a cute place with lovely staff, but sadly the food was average - it was no better than any dinner I've spent a quarter of the money on. I ordered the fish curry as my main, it was pretty underwhelming. I ordered french fries after it to make do, but I was pretty deflated by the whole dinner. My partner ordered the lobster, it was tasty but it didn't come with anything which was unclear when ordering it. I'd go back to their pool bar for a drink though.
B. B.
Great ambience. Gr8 friendly staff
Entrees were quite good . Seafood stew was quite underwhelming. A bit too delicate, no depth in flavour and under seasoned. Expected a lot more when paying those prices.
P. B.
Came for lunch with my son during our stay at Bannisters and I'm so glad we did!
I ordered 2 fish tacos and the sashimi plate, the sashimi was so fresh and flavorsome! The tacos were just bursts of amazing flavours in my mouth and the fish so crunchy.
Service was great and food came out altogether and in a timely manner.
We will be back!
R. S.
Sometimes you have to indulge. Great food, staff and setting.

We came here for our 5 year anniversary dinner on a Friday night at 6pm. This place was pretty much booked out so you need to reserve at least a few weeks in advance if possible. The food was good, it didn't blow me away but it was perfectly lovely and enjoyable. The couple next to us were served an enormous platter of seafood which looked abundant (and expensive) and everyone around us was in a good mood. Relaxed but classy atmosphere, very friendly unobtrusive service with a great setting - if you get there around sunset it's even better.
S. C.
One of the best meals Ive had in a long time. Every meal was delicious, fullfilling and so we'll presented. Staff were attentive and helpful and really worth the visit. Fine dining with a relaxed atmosphere. Ambience slightly lacking therefore the reason for 4 stars but otherwise couldn't fault the place. Well done Rick Stein...little luxury in a unsuspecting place!
K. K.
The food and service were wonderful.
L. H.
Great food, oysters were delicious. Wait staff were fantastic and superb service. The snapper was amazing and the wine was very well priced.
S.
Great service, great food, small portions of quality food... except the rib eye which is great. It's a seafood restaurant. The rib eye was the only non seafood dish on the menu.
S. C.
Warm seafood plate to share was first class. Also really enjoyed the new fish curry dish on the menu. Have seen reviews that mention the place is expensive, but I have paid much more for much less.
G. B.
The best meal I’ve ever had in my life. Seafood so good it’s like a whole new cuisine compared to what I’ve had before. Add in friendly and attentive staff, delicious wines and fantastic fresh sourdough bread, and I feel like I’ve died and gone to food heaven.
S. R.
5 star experience, the food definitely did justice to Rick Stein. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Bannisters, the food was amazing as was the service. Couldn’t fault it. Definitely recommend the prawn curry and mussels entree as well as the salmon curry main. Rick definitely knows his curries!! Can’t wait to come back.
K. C.
Great location, and delicious food. By far the best mussels I've ever eaten. The lobster was a delight, and the apple doughnuts were a sweet way to wrap up a beautiful lunch. The staff were friendly and attentive, as you'd expect at this price point.
L. S.
Food was delicious. The oysters with sausage. weren't anything to write home about and I have a personal pet peeve of non edible garnish(seaweed). The special was interestingly the lamb. The wine list and service was excellent. There are a range of Rick Stine's books available for purchase with all the recipes being used in the restaurant. My mother thoroughly enjoyed her fish soup.
J. D.
One of the few restaurants in Australia that knows how to use garlic and knows how to cook crab. Decor was so-so but food excellent and staff attentive. Very reasonably priced compared to Sydney restaurants of same culinary calibre.
j. r.
beautiful location with the freshest seafood . Staff very friendly and attentive with a easy going style. I especially like the wine menu that really complimented all the food . Thanks guys for making my wife's birthday a nice day
C. P.
The food here is exceptional, the staff tremendous and not to mention the service was exemplary. Nothing like an amazing meal to finish off a beautiful weekend in Mollymook. I'd highly recommend the snapper, the fried goat's cheese and the szechuan prawns. The food was delectable and completely fresh, the atmosphere was really quite nice as well it was relaxed and not stuffy, it was the kind of place you could bring your kids too without needing to dress up or feel out of place. I definitely recommend this place for Foodies and people who just honestly enjoy a good meal. I love that the menu was Seasonal, and that was evident by the way the menu is designed to pair entree to Mains and desserts I think all in all it was just a lovely night out at Bannisters and definitely an excellent place for a celebration, anniversary or birthday dinner
A. C.
Dinner for two at Rick Steins, amazing table by the window organised when we arrived by Bonnie, who was absolutely exceptional. Bonnie and team did not miss a beat, dinner quality and flavour was fresh and delicious. Ambiance and timing of everything made our experience A+. Would definitely have another meal here and recommend to anyone!
R. J.
The seafood was fresh. The service was good and the view was beautiful. The only thing I'd say is there needs to be a more affordable selection of wines. Also the 10% surcharge if you book for more then 10 people. Getting charge more for bringing in more money, ie, people, is ridiculous.
e. p.
A great restaurant. Objective assessment: Martini was not good. Everything food wise was great, particularly ceviche, snapper and dessert. Unfortunately a newborn sat next to us - would recommend (to the restaurant) not seating a freshly born baby next to a couple as it scared me. Watch for the rabbits on the lawn at night and the very lovely wait staff.
D. J.
Really enjoyed a Sunday night as it's a single sitting. Therefore, layed back and the transition from sunset to magenta lit eucalypts outside was nice touch.
Started with the best whiskey sour I've had in ages.
Starters Mussels w/masala/Coco/ginger broth and Scallop w/hazlenut/coriander both very fine.
Service very pleasant and attentive. The food is very very good but because it lacks pretension (it's food for enjoyment and eatability) I suspect a lot of ppl feel its expensive ($50 fish curry main). To me that is very good value for the whole package.
I do think the markup on wine is overdone: $99 for a $35 retail Cloudy Bay savblanc.
Could be 5 stars but this and a small lack of wow keeps it at 4
A. P.
Absolutely amazing. Food was out of this world, service pleasant and helpful, atmosphere like at home. It could not have been any better. Price is also very reasonable. I only wish it was closer so we can visit more often! Thank you for a fantastic evening!
D. O.
In a beautiful sea side setting, this was our first time at Bannisters. Courteous and very welcoming for lunch, the staff were professional and attentive. Food was excellent with wines to match. Will definitely be back to spend longer and have more to write on this delightful spot.
k. w.
The best best best restaurant I have ever eaten at ever. In terms of the quality it's worth every cent. It will become an annual pilgrimage and the seaweed butter and fresh brioche was too die for. The fish pie was scrumptious ...in fact it was all to die for. The atmosphere was relaxed, smart and fresh and very tastefully decorated. The staff were cordial, courteous and professional my only disappointment was that it ended (because all good things must) and Rick Stein was not in residence. What a great memory of our 20th wedding anniversary. Thank you Bannisters for making it so special.

Mixed review on the venue.
Food:
- Oysters were fresh, perhaps needed to be a touch colder.
- Sardine (special) well done and probably top 2 dishes for the night.
- Sashimi was Ok, not the best, Tuna was good, Salmon wasn't spectacular.
- Snapper Fillet was my favourite, flaky moist and delicious and top 2 for the night
- Half Lobster was good
Dessert:
ordered Lime cheesecake, but seemed to be covered with strawberries, still delicious.
Wine:
Ordered the Chablis which went well with dinner and a good range of wines.
Service:
Hit and miss, some staff were happy to be there, others barely smiled and seemed disinterested.
We were early but weren't allowed to sit down 30 minutes earlier by one of the managers which seemed a bit confusing, might have been a bit of a miscommunication, but generally I would expect a manager to say, let me take your number and if I can sit you earlier I'll call you from the pool bar... (just a thought)

Had a fantastic evening. Great food and service. Another one off the bucket list.
s. J.
Food was very tasty. Not amazing given the hype and price but still good. Staff were friendly and helpful. Didn't like having staff attending to us what felt like every 5 minutes or so, but I do understand that they just want to make sure everyone is happy. Would consider going back with a few friends and see if it is a different experience.
V. H.
Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. Great food, great service. Thanks Gareth for your time and attention
R. C.
Great customer service and decor, however the booking process was a little clunky. The vegan meal was a basic pasta lacking any "wow" factor, especially for the price. The other meal was of a regular standard. Overall, it was an okay experience, but wouldn't recommend if any dietary requirements.
T. C.
Great food, combined with enthusiastic yet not quite top level service.
Dined with two other people and sampled each of their dishes to sample a total of six dishes at Rick Steins. I reccomend both the grilled prawns and the ravioli as entrees, both exceeded the groups expectations and the flavour profile (especially of the prawns) was fantastic.
Mains were the whole steamed snapper, the curry and the fish pie. Mains were done well, nothing surprising and decently sized. Curry was our groups least favorite, my complaint being a tad undersauced and the fish pie was good. The entrees and mains were decently sized enough that none of the table got desert.
As for service, I should preface with the fact that the employees were very friendly and were attentive. At first the outdoor area was full and so we were seated inside but as a table opened up they offered to seat us outside without us prompting. From entering Rick Steins to leaving, the staff were incredibly helpful and enthusiastic.
The issue came from that we interacted with six individual staff members once seated. This caused us to be asked three different times within a space of under ten minutes if we wanted more wine, despite answering in the negative each time. There was also an approximately hour delay between the ending of our entrees and the delivery of our mains. The staff did however apologise for this and gave a discount on the total bill.
This criticism did not reflect a neccessarily negative experience but is more for the management. I personally would rather deal with one dedicated server who knows the table well, rather than six who don't know the table at all.
Overall the restaurant has good to great, unpretentious and decently sized dishes with a more relaxed feel than the price tag would indicate. Would reccomend.
K. D.
Classy yet relaxed, the perfect venue for a romantic dinner, that special celebration, or a family meal.
Attentive staff, lively and inspired menu combine well with contemporary setting.
Advance booking is a must to avoid disappointment.
S.
Nice food, though the service really didn’t quite live up to reputation. Had a booking but took 2 staff about 5 minutes to find our table. Apparently if you enter via the balcony you get more attention. During service, our waiter preferred to talk to patrons about his Sydney investments than to, well, wait
Not the standard we expected from a celebrity chef’s restaurant.
K. Z.
Food didn't disappoint - fresh and local seafood, the fish and shellfish soup was so light but complex (a must try!). Theres a beautiful fireplace lounge en entry. I had been waiting to visit this restaurant for some time with so many great reviews. No qualms with the maitre d/host - we were promptly greeted and seated on arrival. But the other staff fell short . It may have been a rare occasion but I won't be coming back. The server cleared my bread plate but took the butter even though my companion still had a slice of bread to consume. Honest mistake. She said she would send the sommelier as soon as we seated but by the time we'd finished entrees and moving onto mains there was no sommelier and so we had made the decision of wines ourselves with the help of another table who also said they were waiting for the sommelier. The sommelier could visit all new tables especially when there are customers reading the wine list for 30 minutes. For us, we like to enjoy the whole experience and the staff are the most experienced with the menu and beverages. It would have been nice to have some suggestions to balance the meal. It was overall difficult to get a wait staff attention and it became hard to believe any of the servers wanted to be there! So I do feel the staff let the place down
m. k.
We were VERY happy with the service and food ! Both were outstanding!
I was disappointed after learning the lovely wine we had with dinner was 250 percent more expensive, than outside the restaurant....it seriously cheapens the experience.
Having a great reputation for seafood does not warrant such a high mark up.
The real question now is what to tell our many friends, and would we go again?
CHEERS Bannisters!
K. D.
what a great night excellent food and service the food is awesome i had Tuna entree, and Blue Eye main, both were fantastic, i will go back to taste some of the other dishes on the menu. we were a table of eight no one complained or was disappointed.
K. M.
Virtually faultless. Fantastic seafood , service and atmosphere. Great wine list and not expensive. Not cheap but not expensive for what you get.
C.
It seems a common theme from previous reviews that the staff don’t quite match a restaurant of this price point.
We made a reservation for a special occasion weeks ago, and drove down from Sydney especially. When we arrived, we were told that we could “basically choose any of the tables which were remaining”. It caught us by surprise and we were obviously unfamiliar with the restaurant layout so we awkwardly chose the nearest table at the back. It felt really disappointing, especially after we had been so excited to dine here.
I mentioned to the waiter when we sat down that this is how we felt, and his response was equally subpar. Firstly, he called me “mate” and told me that everyone wanted a table by the window. This wasn’t really my point, but ok. It would have been nice to be shown to a table or given an option to sit on either side of the restaurant etc. Just not the type of service you would really expect...
Food was really nice, but in such a competitive industry this isn’t always enough.
Q. L.
We stayed here for baby moon. Service was very good, attentive staff. We got breakfast ala Carte as the buffet ( @ $25 pp) looked minimal.
The big breakfast we got was a bit sloppy, not even garnish which I know is no big deal but indicated a bit lack of care. The simple things.
M. C.
this is hands down a 7 star restaurant. the food the service and everything about this place is unreal. if u are ganna complain about prices then maybe hit up some fish and chips place. but u wanna try a real seafood place with a real taste of what seafood should taste like look no further.
The lobster was 10/10
the grilled prawns 10/10
the snapper 10/10
the fresh prawns 10/10
the coconut prawns 10/10
The salmon 10/10
the sushi 10/10
drinks 10/10 mix
I gotta give the waiters and stuff a 11/10
good work guys I'll be coming back
D. M.
This is the best dinner i have ever had! Hubby and i shared an angus steak and the fruits de mer_which is a fresh seafood platter. The steak melts in your mouth, so tasty and tender. The seafood was devine, very fresh! Service was amazing, our waitress was so friendly and helpful! She suggested we order the fruits de mer and she was right it was beautiful!
K. B.
Enjoyed the most delicious scones and coffee ever...." Tea by the sea". Thanks for the awesome hospitality. We shall return!
R. L.
Words can't describe how wonderful the food and service is here. The fish pie is just superb. In fact our entree, meal and dessert were absolutely stunning.
M. T. C.
A belated review from our 2017 visit.
Top marks for the seafood. Five star quality ingredients, five star quality cooking, a feat regrettably uncommon in our 'home girt by sea' where most restaurants still can't cook seafood, even if they can manage to find it fresh.
An excellent team. The floor staff looked after us well, and called over the sommelier to give us perfect recommendations a few nights in a row.
None of them showed any concern while I licked my paws and rubbed my wrists behind my ears.
The venue, as some have said, could use . . . something. They're stuck with the building they've got, but I still don't think they're making the best possible use of the Mollymook headland, view and vibe. Contrast it with their Pool Bar, twenty meters down the hill. Personally, I'd rather see them move away from the Fine Dining gig and open the place to the elements.
Value for money's acceptable. Granted, it's not cheap, but putting on decent seafood is expensive (even in a 'home girt by sea'). One could easily spend more elsewhere and still get a poor meal. Been there, done that.
It's a great place for a special occasion (visitors) or a great night out (locals). If they could deliver it at a marginally less expensive rate, or in a marginally more appealing venue, it would be a dead-sure five star experience. Still, it's good, very good.
Pro tip: if you're calling a taxi, tell them whether you're meeting them out the front door, up on the main road, or down the close nearest the restaurant.
p.s. those two 'home girt by sea' digs are due to the fact that 95% of the Australian population lives within an hour of the sea, but the distribution network means the average family has to put up with old, stinky, unsatisfactory seafood. At top-of-the-world prices. Punters, we're getting shafted!
A. H.
Great atmosphere and great view. Food was half good and half just ok. Nothing bad but also nothing amazing or exiting. Great Creme Brule.
M. S.
Great service, ocean views from some tables, beautiful food, interesting wine list. Not cheap but reasonable price for the experience.
M. H.
This was ok. Great setting but the food was nothing to write home about. Cupitts which is where we went the day after was way way better in every way.
I will say.. the lobster was pretty amazing, and the location was pretty special, but the rest was best matched to 1980 in terms of presentation and mix of flavours.
The location.. bannisters and the pool which is where we stayed was definately amazing - definitely 5 stars for bannisters.
M.
A great experience from start to finish. Staff are attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere is relax but upmarket. The food is delicious, from the prawn linguine or sashimi of snapper, salmon, tuna and kingfish. For mains we shared the Fruits De Mar, which was the freshest shellfish served ice cold and naturally. Desserts were just as good, we had the Chocolate Fondant and free standing Passionfruit Creme Brulee.
J. L.
Outstanding quality seafood that is prepared beautifully and not over cheffed. Decor is down to earth and refreshingly un fussy. The seafood pie was disappointing. It simply wasn’t a pie but just pie filling and not up to the standard of the other dishes. A long lunch for my sons 30th birthday was preceded by a swim on the beautiful beach.
R. S.
Fab breakfast @Bannisters. Attentive yet professional service
J. -.
Amazing in every way. The food was spectacular; fresh, perfectly cooked and some of the best seafood I have had. The wine selection was lovely, and the staff were very friendly.
J. R.
Great service, lovely food, beautiful vista. Limited menu, beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Well worth a special occasion.
K. R.
Good food and good view over the beach.
M. K.
The seafood is outstanding here! Mussels are the must and lobster was just beyond anything! With a beautiful ocean view, time slows down here.
P. D.
We stayed at Bannisters and dined at Rick Stein. We had an issues with our restaurant reservation seating. When we mentioned this on check out, was told to put it in writing to Pam Smith the Front Office and Accomodation manager. I did not want to post this review publicly but due to nil response to my email I feel a review is necessary.
We had come down to Bannisters to celebrate my partners birthday. I had booked both the accomodation and dinner booking at Rick Stein just over 4 weeks before our attendance. Once I had made the booking I emailed saying that this was a special occasion birthday celebration. I was informed that this was noted on both our room and restaurant booking.
I was extremely disappointed by the seating we had been given at the restaurant and it did take the shine off what we were dining for.
When we first arrived the restaurant host said and I quote “Plenty of seats available, take a seat wherever you want mate”. For a restaurant of this caliber I was surprised to be told that and not ushered to a table.
Second of all we had to take a table right at the back without a view. When I questioned this and said that the restaurant knew that this was a birthday celebration and asked why we weren’t reserved a nice table, his response was “The front row tables a first come first served”. Whilst I do appreciate this as you cant be holding all the front row tables, I can’t understand the logic. Someone could book a day before and be offered a front row table whilst I book so far out, for a special occasion, which is at great expense for both the restaurant and accomodation and the best I can be given is a table in the back corner next to a coffee machine.
The restaurant host did not seem interested when I raised this.
When I also raised this upon checkout I was surprised at the level of ‘care factor’. I always like to raise these issues in person before publicly leaving a review, because I do believe in been fair and hearing what the response is and how genuine it is, and I was simply told to "leave feedback in the email".
I drove out yesterday with mixed feelings.
A. Y.
Food was unbelievable. Whole snapper probably the best I've ever had. Service was impeccable - Darryl and Hannah were fantastic.
P. T.
Great oysters!! Not sure why the menu had 2 x currys on the menu? Tuna was outstanding, wine well priced, deserts lush. Service was better than best, well done!!
S. K.
We had lunch it was amazing.
E. W.
I have to say the food was extremely nice comma but the overall price was a huge letdown for the quality of the dishes. We have had just as nice dishes for much less price in equivalent style restaurants. Most likely would not return to Rick Stein's Bannisters.
J. C.
Amazing food. Amazing location. Fresh seafood. Must try Rick's seafood pie and get your hands dirty with the Singapore style chili prawns or crab, depending on what's available. Will definitely be back for more!
J. D.
Was quite good. Staff was friendly. You could tell they had a busy night yet they we're still super friendly and professional despite a few snappy customers.
R.
Very much enjoyed our stay. Facilities are good. Staff are friendly and helpful.
D. R.
Great food, smart, beautiful local food, great service. Very busy.
Noisy. Not a place for a conversation. I'd go again and again and again though. Try to dine outside if weather is good. Go!
R. B.
Whole snapper for the main was delicious and flavoursome. Good way to spend a wet Saturday with a glass of wine and great food.
M. T.
Bannister's is a beautifully appointed resort. The atmosphere in Rick's restaurant is tranquil and sophisticated. Sadly the food was disappointing. In particular the scallop ceviche was underwhelming, and the fish pie small with overcooked prawns. And the broccolini side dish was smothered in a pesto type sauce which detracted from the freshness of the vegie.
R. K.
Absolute Serene Atmosphere and Delightful Service at it's Best.
The Fare is very Flexible to suit One's Taste and Budget.
The food is Continental fare with one's own Custom Preparation.
Vine list is just perfect to accompany the food is served,
It's an easy drive from Sydney with plenty of Parking and Abundance of Views.
S. S.
Beautiful location and honest, no fuss, great fresh seafood. The Singapore chili crab is a messy delight - a must do! Try and get a seat near the windows so you can watch the sunset out to sea.
M. S.
Had a beautiful meal of seafood. Service was brilliant, with staff attentive and friendly. Highly recommend!!
J. “. F.
Exceptional food, service and ambience. They went out of their way to make our special occasion fabulous. Loved the fish soup, fish pie, creme brulee.
M. C.
OMG ... was expecting a lot and got a lot! Awesome ambience, Great food, excellent wine list, silver service by top staff.
Parking is a bit dodge but well worth a little walk up the street.
P. R.
Very nice food. Staff were friendly and efficient. Service was good.
M. L.
Absolutely magnificent dishes with wines and digestive to accompany. Best friends to share the loveliest experience.
R. P.
We sat outside on a high shaded balcony overlooking the ocean and ate perfectly cooked and presented food. We also drank several beautiful wines.
B. M.
Great food. Excellent service. Lovely wines.
M. C.
A beautiful restaurant with a stunning outlook, friendly wait staff, sensational food served in healthy portions. A perfect place to celebrate a special occasion.
J. B.
An opportunity to visit did not disappoint, with quality food at reasonable prices at this high-profile restaurant.
S. C.
Exceptional staff with a warm atmosphere and an incredible meal. We will make a point to come back again.
M. W.
Visited here 8 or 9 times. Always excellent food and service, but quite pricey. The lunch special menu, which isn't always available, is good value.
R. G.
We had two lovely dinners last Wed, Thurs, food was excellent, staff were so nice and helpful, specially Vanessa and Ian . Thank you for making it so special. Rod , Deb.
G. A.
Even with my prawn and shellfish allergy, there were still plenty of dishes. Great view, great food.
L. T.
Fresh seafood done right!
L. A.
I love this restaurant. However, the food wasn't as great as normal. I had the bouibase and it didn't quite hang together. The flavors hadn't had time to combine.
J. B.
Bit disappointing. Not bad but no wow factor. No mind blown. Coupled with staff that clearly had a limited understanding of the wine list. At half the price I would recommend it.
R. G.
Extraordinary food, spectacular views, superb wine list. The service was attentive, but not intrusive. Worth the drive and the credit card bill.
R. C.
Amazing meal by Rick and the team. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wine pairing but also how entrees and mains would go together.
P. S.
Amazing food, incredible wait staff. Top end prices but worth it. Recommend going during the day to take advantage of the stunning views.
G. S.
Had a gorgeous dinner on Friday night with friendly staff and beautiful food. Google opening hours need fixing up as it said they were closed that night but great experience there. Thank you.
L. G.
Fantastic food and superb service what more is there to say. A little more expensive than a local restaurant but what a difference in quality and service. Well done Rick we loved it.
I. C.
A wonderful dining experience overlooking the ocean. The seafood was outstanding.
C. H.
All class from start to finish and very catering to children also.
S. K.
Very classy, adequate portion sizes for a fine dining restaurant.
H. T.
an over rated place and not worth the drive to. we ordered the signature lobster bisques which was excellent but all other food was just average and over priced. the location itself it definitely over rated.
J. J.
Absolutely delicious! The staff were very nice and accommodating and the food was fantastic and all come out in a timely fashion.
Thanks guys😁
A. C.

L. S.
A little expensive but delicious meal. Missed the curry we had before as menu had changed. Less choices for Asian cuisine now and we missed it.

S. P.
Love it, I bring my partner here all the time , food is great , drinks are quick and all staff is lovely, highly recommend as the view is superb too

(Translated) Not good enough for the price. As a starter, I had the mussels, which were perfectly cooked, but somehow didn't go well with the intense curry sauce. The main course is the blue swimmer crab, which unfortunately cooled down extremely quickly on the balcony, including the sauce. The sauce generally dominates too thick and too strong coriander, otherwise actually tasty. The chocolate mousse for dessert was absolutely nothing special. Conclusion: I was a little disappointed for the price.
(Original)
